Growing up, I learned early what it meant to live with limited resources. My family did the best they could, but financial stability was never guaranteed, and college was not something anyone around me had experienced. Because of this, higher education often felt distant and uncertain. Despite those challenges, I developed a strong sense of independence, resilience, and motivation that continues to drive me today. I will be the first in my family to attend college, and that opportunity represents far more than a degree it represents progress, hope, and a new path forward.
Throughout my life, I have faced obstacles both at home and within myself. Family challenges tested my emotional strength and forced me to mature quickly. There were moments when balancing personal responsibilities with school and extracurricular commitments felt overwhelming. However, instead of letting those struggles define me, I used them as motivation. I learned how to stay focused under pressure, manage my time, and push forward even when circumstances were not ideal. These experiences shaped my character and gave me a work ethic that I am proud of.
Basketball has also played a major role in my development. I have been involved in the sport for most of my life, and while it brought moments of success, it also came with setbacks injuries, losses, and intense competition. Being challenged on the court taught me discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Basketball showed me that improvement does not come overnight and that setbacks are part of growth. The lessons I learned through the sport apply directly to my academic journey: consistency, effort, and belief in myself even when progress feels slow.
My passion for learning has led me to pursue a major in Electrical and Computer Engineering. I am inspired by how technology shapes the world and creates solutions to real-world problems. I want to develop the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to innovation and to build a stable future for myself and my family. As a first-generation college student, navigating this path is both exciting and challenging, but I am self-motivated and fully committed to succeeding.
Receiving this scholarship would make a significant difference in my educational journey. Financial support would allow me to focus more fully on my studies, reduce stress, and take advantage of academic opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. More importantly, this scholarship would affirm that my hard work and determination are recognized. It would be an investment not only in my education, but in my future and my ability to give back to my community.
My story is one of perseverance, growth, and ambition. I have faced challenges, but I have never stopped moving forward. With continued support and opportunity, I am ready to achieve my goals and create a better future through education.
If I were to start my own charity, its mission would be to support first-generation and low-income students who face financial and emotional barriers to higher education. I would focus on serving students from underserved communities by providing academic mentoring, college preparation resources, mental health support referrals, and guidance on navigating financial aid and scholarships. Volunteers would serve as mentors, tutors, and advocates helping students with applications, offering academic support, sharing real-life college experiences, and creating a stable support system that many students, like myself.

The government shutdown has affected me in ways that go beyond money. While finances were part of the stress, the biggest impact was the uncertainty it created and how that uncertainty worsened my mental health. When services and support systems feel unstable, it becomes harder for me to stay grounded and focused.
During the shutdown, I constantly worried about whether important resources would be delayed or unavailable. Not knowing if benefits, healthcare access, or mental health services would continue caused a lot of anxiety. That stress followed me every day and made it harder to manage my mental health. Even small disruptions felt overwhelming because I rely on routine and consistency to stay stable.
Access to mental health care was another major challenge. Appointments felt uncertain, and the fear of interruptions in treatment made me feel vulnerable. When you live with a mental illness, consistency matters. Any delay in therapy, medication management, or support can cause setbacks. During the shutdown, I felt like progress I had worked hard for was at risk, not because of anything I did wrong, but because of circumstances outside my control.
The emotional impact was heavy. The constant news about political conflict and the shutdown added to feelings of stress, frustration, and helplessness. It felt like people making decisions at a higher level did not fully understand how those decisions affect individuals like me. That sense of being overlooked made the experience even more isolating.
The effects of the shutdown did not disappear once things reopened. The stress lingered, and it took time to regain a sense of stability. The anxiety I experienced during that period affected my ability to focus on my responsibilities and maintain balance in my daily life. In that way, the impact was not just short-term it had lasting effects on my mental health.
Overall, the government shutdown disrupted my sense of security and made managing my mental illness more difficult. It showed me how fragile access to care and support can be, and how deeply political decisions can affect personal well-being. It also reinforced how important it is for policymakers to consider the human impact of their decisions, especially on people who already face mental health challenges. Stability, clear communication, and reliable access to care are not luxuries they are essential for people like me to function and heal. It made me realize that protecting mental health support systems is not just about funding, but about safeguarding people’s sense of safety, dignity, and continuity of care.
