Mattie K Peterson Higher Education Scholarship
Serving my community is not just important to me it’s part of my calling. As a nurse and a woman of faith, I believe that healing, uplifting, and empowering others is how I honor both my professional purpose and my spiritual assignment. I’ve seen firsthand how communities, especially underserved ones, can flourish when just one person decides to show up, listen, and serve with love.
Growing up, I witnessed how a single act of care a neighbor bringing groceries, a church member offering a ride, or a nurse checking in on a patient after hours could change the trajectory of someone’s life. These moments planted a seed in me: I wanted to be that person. I wanted to be a light, a safe place, a bridge toward healing.
As I pursue higher education in nursing, I see it as more than a career. It’s a ministry. My goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner and eventually a Doctor, not just to advance professionally, but to advocate for and serve communities that are often overlooked. I want to educate, to break generational cycles of misinformation, and to make healthcare feel personal, respectful, and empowering.
Serving my community is also personal. I’ve walked through mental health battles, grief, financial strain, and moments where I needed someone to see me not just as a case or a number, but as a whole person. Now I want to be that for others. I want young girls to see a Black woman in scrubs who reflects their strength, beauty, and future. I want the elderly to feel cared for with dignity. I want families to feel peace, knowing someone is advocating for their healing.
In short, serving my community matters because we all rise together. When one of us is lifted, we all benefit. It’s not just about giving back; it’s about creating a cycle of hope, healing, and progress that lasts for generations.
Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus fully on my studies and community outreach without the burden of financial stress. It would be an investment not just in me, but in every life I will touch as I grow in my nursing career. I am committed to using my education, faith, and compassion to make real, lasting change. These changes will carry on for generations to come and help shape the world to becoming more well rounded loving human beings.
