Growing up in a predominantly black neighborhood, my family rarely exposed me to the array of cultures in other parts of the U.S. As such, I never had the chance to learn the perspectives and values of people from different backgrounds. My family members had few connections to people outside our culture, which led me to believe I could not develop the communication skills needed to succeed later in life. But this is precisely why I need to become an Architect. By studying the vast array of cultural values and cultures of different groups, I will design spaces to foster an inclusive environment among everyone, regardless of socioeconomic circumstances.

Winner“Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies? Got it. Master of Architecture? Two more years. Architect license? Four more years.” These will be my words after graduating from FAMU, ready to tackle the next steps toward final goal: creating affordable housing for underrepresented communities.
As an African American, I’ve witnessed how marginalized groups often lack access to affordable housing. Becoming a licensed architect will allow me to address this issue. After earning my master’s degree, I’ll join the Architectural Experience Program (AXP) to complete 3,740 hours of documented work experience and pass the Architecture Registration Exam (ARE) to obtain licensure.
With a strong alum network at FAMU, I’ll host design preference surveys to understand community needs and preferences. Collaborating with digital marketing professionals, I’ll gather insights to guide the creation of affordable housing that is financially accessible and culturally relevant. Using sustainable materials and incorporating community spaces, I’ll design homes that reflect economic, environmental, and social benefits.
My vision extends beyond building homes—it’s about fostering inclusivity and empowering communities. At FAMU, I am committed to studying architecture to create spaces that honor diverse cultural and personal values. By doing so, I aim to enhance lives and demonstrate that anyone, regardless of background or socioeconomic standing, can contribute meaningfully to our world.
Through thoughtful design, affordable housing can become a foundation for stronger, more inclusive communities.
