I am a communications and journalism student at GTCC and NC A&T with a passion for storytelling, film production, and community impact. As a U.S. Army National Guard veteran and an experienced retail manager, I bring leadership, resilience, and dedication to every project I pursue. I am also a published poet and aspiring filmmaker focused on uplifting Black culture and youth voices through media. I’m working toward building a media company that combines creativity with mentorship for underrepresented students. Scholarships will help me further my education and expand opportunities for others through my work.

Josh Edwards Memorial Scholarship For Creative Artists
Art has always been my way of understanding the world—of telling stories that might otherwise go unheard. As a Black creative, poet, and aspiring filmmaker, I have seen firsthand how powerful the arts can be in shaping identity, inspiring change, and building community. This is why I am pursuing a major in Communications and Journalism with a deep focus on the arts. I want to use my education and creative talents to amplify underrepresented voices, particularly within Black culture, and to create work that not only entertains but also empowers and educates.
My journey with the arts began with poetry. As a published poet, I have learned how words can touch hearts and bridge divides. But I wanted to take this passion further—to the screen. Film allows me to merge my love of storytelling with visual artistry, and it offers a powerful platform to reach broader audiences. My goal is to build a production company, Golden Hour Productions, that focuses on the positivity, richness, and complexity of Black life. I envision creating films and media projects that showcase narratives beyond stereotypes—stories of joy, resilience, innovation, and beauty.
Through my academic pathway at GTCC and NC A&T, I am learning the tools to make this dream a reality—from writing and directing to media ethics and cultural studies. I also draw from my diverse experiences: leadership as a U.S. Army National Guard veteran, customer service and communication as a retail manager, and public speaking through organizations like Toastmasters. Each of these roles has sharpened my ability to connect with people and tell stories that resonate.
Looking ahead to my career, I plan to use my artistic talents in several ways. First, as a filmmaker and producer, I will create content that brings untold stories to the forefront. Second, as a mentor, I will provide opportunities for youth of color—offering workshops and internships in film, poetry, and media. Representation matters, not only on the screen but also behind the camera, and I want to help build that pipeline. Third, I aim to continue writing and publishing poetry that sparks dialogue and healing within my community.
In my personal life, art will remain my compass. Whether through photography, film, or the written word, I will document the world around me, celebrate my culture, and stay grounded in purpose. I also plan to use my talents to uplift local initiatives—partnering with community organizations to create promotional materials, documentaries, and digital campaigns that drive positive change.
Ultimately, I believe that the arts are not just about expression; they are about impact. They can inspire empathy, foster understanding, and drive movements. With the support of this scholarship, I will continue to develop my craft and use it to contribute meaningfully to both my career and my community.
