Michele L. Durant Scholarship
I am Jaezmyne Pheanious-Browne, a musician, educator, and human being. Opera and classical music have been my passions for over a decade. I have also come to love education through my several years of job experience in the field. I am currently a full-time special education teacher and I have grown so much as a person through the role. Music and education are two of the most important parts of my life and have been lessons in humanity, communication, and compassion. My goal is to continue pursuing a career in music while working in the education community as a volunteer, teaching assistant, and/or mentor. Giving back means sharing what I have learned through my personal educational and life journies with those who may not have the same opportunities.
Music has been my preferred style of communication since I was a child. Singing in church, school choirs and school plays provided me with an outlet when my home life was more than I could handle at a young age. I have discovered that communication through speaking is sometimes not enough to convey certain deeply felt emotional circumstances. Music often can portray things that cannot be perfectly encompassed through conventional dialogical speech. Opera in particular has proven to be impactful emotionally even when its listeners are not fluent in the language with shows such as "Carmen" being immensely popular for generations amongst native French speakers and non-French speakers alike. I love singing opera music because it has allowed me to explore the ranges of human feeling beyond my own experience. The world is ever-changing, but music is always there and there are limitless stories to tell and use as outlets for the intensity of the human spirit.
Education is the single most important process in society. Each positive change that has come about in our world has been a result of someone who was pushed to inquire about if things were different. The gift of education is empowering and participating in that process for the children at the school I currently work in, is an invaluable joy. During my school day, I help teach children skills and accompany them to specialist classes, such as music, art, and library. Watching them learn new things has been so fulfilling. I want nothing more than to see them pursue every dream they can think of, and have no limits to what they can achieve if they put their hearts and minds to it.
Darryl Davis "Follow Your Heart" Scholarship
Music has always been my personal outlet that no one and nothing could take away from me. Because music is intangible, I had it with me wherever I went and could get through times of poverty and depression through song and dance. It is the most beautiful art form for its ability to connect people from a wide range of backgrounds.
I am a Performance major with a passion for art, theatre and most of all, music. I plan to be involved in the music industry as an executive in the future, working for and with recording artists. I love the way musical expression intertwines with visual art to create a persona that is a culmination of each art form. I plan to pursue my goals through acquiring job experiences such as internships and assistant positions. I also love to perform and believe that continuing to do so will aid me in my endeavors. The performer's perspective is different than those who are managing and organizing. I hope to achieve helping others reach their full potential as artists.
What excites me most about this world is the infinite possibilities of creation. Creativity is such a free thing and there are really no limitations, meaning you can dedicate your entire life to it. When you are passionate about art, you may never tire of it. It is also one of the most gratifying lines of work. Seeing your ideas come to life can spark feelings of accomplishment and joy. Also, in a more selfless aspect, seeing others your enjoy art is a gratifying feeling.
I plan to give back to my community through donations and volunteer work when I am not actively working towards my goals. I love working with fellow artists and believe art education is essential to school-aged children's' social development. I would like to go to local schools and community centers to do workshops that will allow for self-expression through music and art.
