The person who has supported me the most throughout my educational journey is my mother. She raised me on her own after making the difficult decision to leave a relationship affected by addiction and domestic violence. She left when I was still a baby and never looked back, choosing to protect my future and give me the chance to grow up in a safe and stable environment. From that moment forward, she carried the full responsibility of raising me while working hard to provide stability and opportunity in our lives. Watching her perseverance and sacrifices has shaped who I am today and continues to motivate me to pursue my goals.
Growing up in a single-parent household came with challenges. My mother worked tirelessly to make ends meet, often balancing work and responsibilities while still making sure I had the support I needed to succeed in school. Even during the most difficult times, she never allowed our circumstances to limit the expectations she had for my future. She constantly reminded me that education was one of the most powerful tools I could use to build a better life.
Her encouragement helped me stay focused on my studies and believe in my abilities. I developed a strong passion for mathematics and problem solving, which has become one of my academic strengths. Because of this interest, I now serve as a math tutor at my school, helping younger students build confidence and improve their understanding of the subject. Being able to help others succeed academically is one way I try to honor the support my mother has given me.
Sports and community involvement have also played an important role in my development. I have been involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization since I was in kindergarten, playing both soccer and flag football. Over time, I also began refereeing youth games for younger athletes in the same organization. This experience has taught me leadership, responsibility, and the importance of giving back to the community that helped shape me.
In addition, I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, delivering meals and conducting wellness check-ins for homebound seniors. Through these experiences, I have learned that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
I honor my mother’s sacrifices by working hard academically and striving to make the most of the opportunities she fought to provide. Maintaining a strong work ethic and staying focused on my goals is my way of showing gratitude for everything she has done for me.
As a first-generation college student, my goal is to pursue higher education and build a future where I can use my education to create opportunities for others. I hope to combine my interests in engineering, entrepreneurship, and problem solving to develop solutions that positively impact communities.
My mother’s support has been instrumental in shaping my determination to succeed. Growing up in a single-parent household taught me resilience, gratitude, and the importance of hard work. Her belief in me continues to inspire me to pursue my dreams, and I hope to build on that support by achieving my goals and giving back to others who may face challenges similar to those we experienced.
John F. Rowe, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Growing up, I learned early in life that challenges can shape who you become and how you view the world around you. One of the greatest challenges I faced was instability at home due to addiction and domestic violence. My father struggled with drug addiction, and the environment around me was not always safe or stable. Eventually, my mother made the courageous decision to leave that situation so she could give me a safer and healthier life. From that moment forward, she raised me on her own.
Being raised by a single parent was not easy. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for me while trying to make ends meet and give me opportunities to succeed. Watching her perseverance had a profound impact on me. Even during the most difficult moments, she remained determined to create a better future for both of us. Her strength taught me that adversity does not have to limit a person’s potential. Instead, it can become motivation to work harder and pursue your goals with determination.
Because of my upbringing, I have always approached my education with a strong sense of purpose. I understood early on that education could open doors and create opportunities that might not otherwise exist. I worked hard academically and developed a strong passion for mathematics and problem solving. I also began tutoring younger students in math, helping them understand concepts that once felt difficult to me. Being able to support other students and watch their confidence grow has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my high school years.
Community service has also played an important role in shaping my values and my desire to help others. I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, delivering meals and conducting wellness check-ins for homebound seniors. Through this experience, I have seen how small acts of kindness and service can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
Sports have also given me the opportunity to serve my community. I have been involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization since I was in kindergarten, playing soccer and flag football. As I got older, I began refereeing youth games for younger athletes. Being both a player and a referee has allowed me to mentor younger players while helping ensure that the games are safe, fair, and enjoyable for everyone.
These experiences have strengthened my desire to pursue a path that allows me to help others. Public service, to me, means using your skills and opportunities to improve the lives of people around you. Whether through mentoring students, supporting my community, or creating programs that help others access opportunities, I want my career to have a positive impact.
My experiences growing up taught me that many people face challenges that they cannot overcome alone. Because of this, I feel a strong responsibility to give back and help others find the same support and encouragement that helped me succeed.
As I continue my education, my goal is to pursue a career where I can combine problem solving, leadership, and service to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. The challenges I have overcome have not only strengthened my determination to succeed, but have also inspired me to dedicate my future to helping others overcome their own obstacles.
Christian Fitness Association General Scholarship
Education has always represented opportunity to me. It represents the chance to create a better future not only for myself, but also for my family and community. As a first-generation college student raised in a single-parent household, I understand that access to education can change the trajectory of a person’s life. Because of the challenges I have experienced growing up, I approach my education with determination, gratitude, and a strong sense of responsibility to make the most of every opportunity I have been given.
One of my greatest academic accomplishments has been maintaining a strong academic record while challenging myself with rigorous coursework. Mathematics has always been one of my strongest subjects and a passion of mine. I enjoy the process of problem solving and the satisfaction that comes from working through complex challenges step by step. Recently, I earned a 770 on the math section of the SAT, which reflects my dedication to learning and improving my skills. Because of my passion for math, I also serve as a math tutor at my school, helping younger students build confidence in a subject that many initially find difficult. Seeing students gain confidence and begin to succeed academically has been one of the most rewarding parts of my high school experience.
Outside the classroom, I have tried to stay actively involved in activities that build leadership, discipline, and community connection. Sports have been an important part of my life since I was very young. I have been involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization since kindergarten, playing both soccer and flag football. Being part of this program gave me structure, teamwork, and a strong sense of community. This year marks my final season playing because the league only goes through senior year of high school.
Over time, my role within the organization evolved. As I got older, I began refereeing youth soccer and flag football games for younger athletes in the same league. Being both a player and a referee has allowed me to see sports from two different perspectives. As a referee, I am responsible for ensuring fairness, safety, and good sportsmanship during games. It requires confidence, leadership, and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure. It has been especially meaningful to return to the same organization that helped shape me as a young athlete and now give back by helping younger players enjoy the game.
Community service has also played an important role in my life. I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, delivering meals and making wellness check-ins for homebound seniors. These experiences have reminded me how meaningful small acts of kindness can be. Something as simple as delivering a meal or spending a few minutes talking with someone can have a powerful impact on a person who may otherwise feel isolated or forgotten.
Another initiative that I am particularly proud of is helping to co-found a project called Student Strivers. The purpose of this initiative is to connect students with job and internship opportunities so they can gain early work experience and develop independence. Many students have the motivation to succeed but lack access to opportunities that help them build professional skills. Through Student Strivers, we hope to help students build confidence and prepare for their futures.
While I am proud of these accomplishments, they did not come without challenges. Growing up, my family faced significant hardship. My father struggled with drug addiction, and my home environment was not always stable. Eventually, my mother made the courageous decision to leave that situation so she could give me a safer and more stable life. From that moment on, she raised me on her own. As a single parent, she worked tirelessly to provide for me and ensure that I had opportunities she did not always have herself.
Watching my mother’s resilience taught me one of the most important lessons in my life: adversity does not have to define your future. Instead, it can motivate you to work harder and pursue your goals with determination. Her sacrifices are a constant reminder to remain focused on my education and take advantage of every opportunity available to me.
Receiving this scholarship would help relieve some of the financial burden that comes with pursuing higher education. As a first-generation college student from a low-income household, the cost of college is a significant challenge for my family. This scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my studies and continue building toward my long-term goals.
In the future, I hope to pursue a career that combines my interests in engineering, entrepreneurship, and sports technology. I want to use problem solving and innovation to create opportunities and solutions that positively impact others.
Ultimately, I believe I should be considered for this scholarship not only because of my academic accomplishments and extracurricular involvement, but because of the perseverance and determination that have shaped my journey. I have learned that success is not only about personal achievement, but also about using your opportunities to uplift others.
My goal is to build a future where I can continue mentoring students, giving back to my community, and creating opportunities for people who may face challenges similar to those I experienced growing up.

Faith has played an important role in shaping the way I approach challenges, relationships, and my future goals. Throughout my life, my faith in God has helped guide me during difficult moments and reminded me to remain hopeful, patient, and resilient even when circumstances were challenging.
Growing up, my family faced hardships that tested my strength and perspective. My father struggled with drug addiction, and my home environment was not always stable. Eventually, my mother made the courageous decision to leave that situation so she could give me a safer and more stable life. From that point on, she raised me on her own while working hard to provide for me and ensure that I had opportunities to succeed.
During those difficult moments, my faith helped me stay grounded and hopeful. Believing that God has a purpose for each person gave me the strength to focus on my goals rather than becoming discouraged by the challenges around me. My faith reminded me that adversity does not define who we become, but rather how we respond to it. Through prayer, reflection, and the values I was taught, I learned the importance of perseverance, gratitude, and trusting that difficult experiences can lead to growth.
Faith has also encouraged me to serve others and give back to my community. I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, where I help deliver meals and conduct wellness check-ins for homebound seniors. These experiences remind me that small acts of kindness and compassion can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life. My faith teaches me that serving others is one of the most powerful ways to live out my beliefs.
In addition to volunteering, I try to support others through mentorship and leadership. I tutor students in mathematics, helping younger students gain confidence in a subject that many initially find difficult. Being able to help someone understand something new and believe in their own abilities is incredibly rewarding.
As I continue my education and pursue my career, I believe my faith will continue to guide my decisions and the way I treat others. I plan to pursue a path that combines my interests in engineering, entrepreneurship, and sports technology. While technical skills and knowledge are important, I believe that character, integrity, and compassion are equally essential to building a meaningful career.
My faith will remind me to remain humble, to treat people with respect, and to use whatever opportunities I receive to help others. It encourages me to pursue my goals with honesty and purpose, knowing that success should not only benefit myself but also positively impact the lives of others.
Ultimately, my faith helps me stay focused on what truly matters: perseverance during challenges, gratitude for opportunities, and a commitment to serving others. As I move forward in my education and career, those values will continue to guide me and help me use my talents in ways that make a positive difference in the world.
Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
Making a positive impact on the world begins with recognizing that even small actions can create meaningful change. Throughout my life, I have learned that helping others, sharing knowledge, and creating opportunities can have a lasting effect on individuals and communities. My goal is to use my education, leadership experiences, and passion for problem solving to contribute to a future where more people have access to opportunity and support.
One of the ways I have already begun working toward this goal is through volunteering and community involvement. I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, where I help deliver meals and conduct wellness check-ins for homebound seniors. These experiences have shown me how meaningful simple acts of service can be. Something as small as delivering a meal or spending a few minutes talking with someone can brighten their day and remind them that they are not alone.
Education has also played an important role in how I try to make a difference. Mathematics has always been one of my strongest subjects, and I currently serve as a math tutor at my school, helping younger students build confidence in a subject that many initially find challenging. Seeing students grow more confident in their abilities reminds me that knowledge is something that becomes even more powerful when it is shared.
Sports have also shaped my understanding of leadership and community. I have been involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization since I was in kindergarten, playing soccer and flag football. As I got older, I also began refereeing games for younger athletes. Being both a player and a referee has allowed me to stay connected to the sport while helping younger players learn teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.
In addition, I helped start an initiative called Student Strivers, which focuses on connecting students with job and internship opportunities so they can gain early work experience. Many students have talent and motivation but lack access to opportunities that help them build professional skills. Through Student Strivers, I hope to help more students gain confidence and independence as they prepare for their futures.
Looking ahead, I plan to pursue higher education with a focus on engineering, entrepreneurship, and technology. My goal is to combine problem solving and innovation with a commitment to helping others. Whether through developing new technologies, mentoring students, or creating programs that connect young people with opportunities, I want to use my skills to create positive change.
Making an impact on the world does not always require one large action. Often, it comes from consistently helping others, sharing knowledge, and building opportunities that allow people to grow. By continuing to pursue education, leadership, and service, I hope to create a future where I can contribute to stronger communities and help others reach their full potential.
Let Your Light Shine Scholarship
Creating a legacy, to me, means building something that continues to positively impact others long after you are gone. It is not only about personal success, but about using your talents and opportunities to help others grow, succeed, and find their own paths. My goal in life is to create a legacy built on perseverance, innovation, and service to others.
Growing up, I saw firsthand how resilience and determination can shape a person’s future. My mother raised me on her own after leaving a difficult situation affected by addiction and domestic violence. As a single parent, she worked extremely hard to provide stability and opportunity for me, even during times when making ends meet was challenging. Watching her strength taught me that adversity can either hold you back or motivate you to work harder toward a better future. Her example continues to inspire me to push myself academically and personally.
One way I plan to create a lasting legacy is through entrepreneurship. In the future, I hope to build a business that combines my interests in engineering, technology, and sports. I am particularly interested in sports technology and data analytics, where engineering and innovation can help improve athletic performance, training methods, and decision-making. A company in this space could develop tools that help athletes perform at their best while also giving coaches and teams better insights through data and technology.
However, the legacy I hope to create goes beyond building a successful business. I want my work to open doors for others. One example of this mindset is an initiative I helped start called Student Strivers. The goal of Student Strivers is to help students connect with job and internship opportunities so they can gain early work experience and build confidence. Programs like this can help young people develop independence and skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Another way I try to shine my light is by mentoring and supporting others in my community. I serve as a math tutor, helping younger students understand concepts that once felt difficult to them. Seeing someone gain confidence and realize their potential is incredibly rewarding. I am also involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization, where I have both played sports and refereed games for younger athletes. Being able to give back to the same community that helped shape me has been a meaningful experience.
In addition, I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, delivering meals and checking in on homebound seniors. These moments remind me that even small acts of kindness can have a powerful impact on someone’s life.
For me, shining my light means using my skills, experiences, and opportunities to uplift others. My goal is to build a future where I can combine innovation, leadership, and service to create opportunities that help people succeed.
A true legacy is not measured only by what you achieve for yourself, but by how many people you help along the way. That is the kind of legacy I hope to build.

Growing up in a single-parent, low-income household taught me resilience at an early age. My mother raised me on her own after leaving a difficult situation affected by addiction and domestic violence. Watching her work tirelessly to provide for me while making sure I had opportunities to succeed shaped the way I approach challenges in my own life. She showed me that perseverance, determination, and hard work can overcome even the most difficult circumstances.
Because of my upbringing, I learned that success is not something to take for granted. It requires discipline, focus, and a willingness to keep moving forward even when things are difficult. I have applied those lessons to my education by working hard academically and maintaining a strong GPA while also staying involved in activities that allow me to help others.
I currently serve as a math tutor, helping younger students gain confidence in a subject that many find challenging. I am also involved in youth sports through the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization, where I both play and referee games, helping mentor younger athletes and promote teamwork and sportsmanship.
Looking ahead, I plan to pursue higher education and use my interests in engineering, entrepreneurship, and problem solving to create opportunities for others. My goal is to continue mentoring students, supporting my community, and using my experiences to inspire others who may face challenges similar to my own.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
I love math because it challenges the way I think and pushes me to solve problems in creative and logical ways. Unlike many other subjects, math has a unique clarity to it. There is always a solution to work toward, and the process of figuring out how to get there can be both challenging and rewarding. I enjoy the feeling of working through a difficult problem step by step and finally reaching the answer after careful thinking and persistence.
Math has always been one of my strongest subjects, and over time it has become something I genuinely enjoy. The problem-solving aspect of math motivates me because it requires focus, discipline, and critical thinking. Each new concept builds on the last, which makes learning math feel like solving a larger puzzle piece by piece.
My passion for math has also led me to help others. I currently serve as a math tutor at my school, working with middle and lower school students who need additional support. I enjoy helping students understand concepts that once seemed confusing to them and watching their confidence grow as they begin to solve problems on their own. Seeing that transformation reminds me why I enjoy the subject so much.
Recently, I earned a 770 on the math section of the SAT, which was a moment that confirmed how much the time and effort I have invested in math has paid off. Because of that score, I was invited by the College Board to participate in tutoring SAT math students in small groups. The opportunity to help other high school students strengthen their math skills is something I am excited about because it allows me to share a subject that I truly enjoy.
For me, math is more than just numbers and formulas. It is a way of thinking that teaches patience, persistence, and problem solving—skills that I know will help me throughout my life and future career.

Growing up in the inner city shaped many aspects of who I am today. It taught me resilience, awareness, and the importance of perseverance. While there were many positive influences in my life, there were also challenges that required strength and determination to overcome.
One of the biggest challenges I faced growing up was instability at home due to addiction and domestic violence. My father struggled with drug addiction, and the environment around me was not always safe or stable. Eventually, my mother made the courageous decision to leave that situation in order to give me a safer and healthier life. From that moment on, she raised me on her own, working tirelessly to provide stability and opportunity for me.
Being raised by a single parent in the inner city was not always easy. My mother often had to work extremely hard just to make ends meet, and there were times when financial stress made life difficult. Despite these challenges, she always found a way to provide for me and make sure I had what I needed. She emphasized the importance of education and encouraged me to stay focused on my goals, even when obstacles appeared.
Growing up in the city also meant being surrounded by many different influences, some positive and some negative. I learned early on that the choices I made would shape my future. Instead of letting my environment define me, I chose to focus on school, sports, and community involvement.
Education became one of the most important paths forward for me. I worked hard academically and discovered a passion for mathematics and problem solving. Math became a subject where I could challenge myself and build confidence. Today, I am proud to maintain a strong academic record and help other students through tutoring. Being able to help younger students understand math has been especially meaningful because it allows me to support others who may be struggling just as I once did.
Sports also played a major role in keeping me focused and disciplined. I have been involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization since I was in kindergarten, playing both soccer and flag football. Sports gave me structure, teamwork, and a positive community to be part of. Over time, I also began refereeing youth games within the organization. Being both a player and a referee helped me develop leadership, accountability, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Even though this is my final year playing because the league ends after senior year, I plan to continue refereeing and staying involved in the program.
Another way I try to give back to my community is through volunteering. I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, where I help deliver meals and make wellness calls to homebound seniors. These experiences have taught me how meaningful small acts of service can be and how important it is to support people who may feel isolated or overlooked.
The challenges I experienced growing up in the inner city shaped my character in many ways. They taught me resilience, discipline, and empathy for others who face difficulties. Instead of allowing those challenges to limit my future, I have used them as motivation to work harder and pursue greater opportunities.
As I prepare for college, my goal is to continue building on the lessons I have learned. I hope to pursue higher education in a field where I can combine problem solving, innovation, and leadership while continuing to give back to the community that helped shape me. My experiences growing up have shown me that adversity does not define your future. With determination, support, and hard work, it can become the motivation that drives you forward.

Throughout my early years in school, learning did not always come easily to me. During elementary and middle school, I received support through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). At the time, I needed extra help and services to keep up with my classmates and fully understand the material being taught. While it was sometimes difficult to realize that I needed additional support, those experiences ultimately helped shape the person and student I have become today.
My Special Education program gave me access to teachers and support staff who were patient and dedicated to helping me succeed. They understood that every student learns differently and worked with me to develop strategies that helped me improve my focus, organization, and problem-solving skills. Instead of viewing my challenges as limitations, they helped me see them as opportunities to grow.
One of the most important lessons I learned through this experience was perseverance. Progress did not happen overnight, and there were moments when school felt frustrating. However, the encouragement I received from teachers, mentors, and my family reminded me that improvement comes through effort and determination. Over time, I gained confidence in my abilities and began to realize that with the right support and hard work, I could achieve much more than I once believed.
By the time I reached high school, the work I had put in during my earlier years began to show results. I no longer required the same level of support and had developed the skills and discipline needed to succeed independently. Today, I am proud to say that I am a straight-A student with a 4.0 GPA. Looking back, the challenges I faced in my earlier education were not setbacks, but stepping stones that helped me build resilience, confidence, and a strong work ethic.
My experiences with difficulty have also shaped how I view challenges in other areas of my life. Growing up, my family faced hardships, and my mother worked extremely hard to provide stability and opportunity for me. Watching her perseverance reinforced the importance of determination and responsibility. These experiences taught me that obstacles are not barriers to success, but opportunities to develop strength and character.
Because of these challenges, I have developed a deep appreciation for education and the opportunities it provides. I understand that learning is not always easy, but it is one of the most powerful tools a person can have to shape their future. My experience in Special Education has inspired me to pursue higher education with the mindset that growth comes from persistence and continuous learning.
In high school, I have worked hard academically and discovered a strong passion for mathematics and problem solving. I now serve as a math tutor, helping younger students understand concepts that once felt difficult to me. Being able to help others succeed academically is especially meaningful because I know firsthand what it feels like to struggle with learning and to need extra support.
My goal in pursuing college is not only to continue my education, but also to build a future where I can use my skills and experiences to help others. I am interested in fields such as engineering, entrepreneurship, and sports analytics, where problem solving and innovation play a major role. At the same time, I hope to continue mentoring students and supporting programs that help young people overcome challenges in their education.
My journey through Special Education has taught me that success is not defined by where you start, but by the effort and determination you bring to your goals. The challenges I faced early in my education helped me develop resilience, patience, and confidence in my abilities.
Today, I carry those lessons with me as I prepare for the next chapter of my life. My experiences have shown me that with support, perseverance, and hard work, challenges can become the foundation for growth and achievement.
Aserina Hill Memorial Scholarship
I am a high school senior who believes strongly in perseverance, leadership, and service to others. Growing up, I learned early that challenges can shape your character and motivate you to work harder toward your goals. I was raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide for me after leaving a difficult situation affected by addiction and domestic violence. Watching her resilience and determination taught me the importance of responsibility, gratitude, and making the most of every opportunity I have been given.
In school, I have always challenged myself academically and developed a strong passion for mathematics and problem solving. Because math has always been one of my strongest subjects, I serve as a math tutor at my school, where I help middle and lower school students build confidence and improve their understanding of the subject. Tutoring has been a rewarding experience because it allows me to help younger students overcome challenges and realize their potential.
Outside the classroom, sports have played a major role in shaping who I am. I have been involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization since I was in kindergarten, playing both soccer and flag football. This year marks my final season playing because the league only goes up through senior year. Over time, I also began refereeing youth games for the same organization. Being both a player and a referee has taught me leadership, fairness, and responsibility. It has been meaningful to return to the same league that helped me grow and now help younger athletes learn and enjoy the game.
Community service is also very important to me. I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, delivering meals and conducting wellness check-ins for homebound seniors. These experiences have shown me how meaningful small acts of kindness can be to people who may feel isolated or alone.
In addition, I helped co-found an initiative called Student Strivers, which focuses on connecting students with job and internship opportunities so they can gain early work experience. Through this project, we hope to help students build confidence, independence, and professional skills at a young age.
After high school, I plan to pursue higher education with a focus on engineering and entrepreneurship. My long-term goal is to use problem solving and innovation to create opportunities for others while continuing to give back to my community.
If I were able to start my own charity, its mission would be to help students from underserved backgrounds gain access to education, mentorship, and early career opportunities. Many students have the ability to succeed but lack access to guidance, internships, or work experience that can help them develop professional skills.
The charity would focus on connecting students with mentors, tutoring support, and local businesses that could provide internships or part-time job opportunities. Volunteers would help students with academic tutoring, career preparation, resume building, and interview skills. The goal would be to empower young people with the tools and confidence they need to pursue their goals and build successful futures.
I believe that when someone is given an opportunity, they have a responsibility to help create opportunities for others. Through my education, leadership experiences, and community service, I hope to continue building a future where I can positively impact others and help strengthen the communities around me.
New Jersey New York First Generation Scholarship
Being a first-generation college student means much more to me than simply earning a degree. It represents the opportunity to change the direction of my family’s future and honor the sacrifices my mother made to give me the chance to succeed. Growing up, my mother raised me on her own after leaving a difficult situation affected by addiction and domestic violence. As a single parent, she worked incredibly hard to provide stability and opportunity for me, often facing financial challenges while still making sure I had what I needed to succeed.
Because of her sacrifices, becoming the first person in my family to graduate from college would be a powerful milestone. It would represent perseverance, resilience, and the idea that difficult circumstances do not have to define someone’s future. For me, earning a college degree is not only about personal achievement, but also about creating opportunities that will allow me to support my family and give back to the community that helped shape me.
Throughout high school, extracurricular activities have played an important role in shaping my character and helping me grow as a leader. One of the most meaningful activities in my life has been my involvement with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization. I have been part of this organization since kindergarten, playing both soccer and flag football. This year marks my final season playing because the league only goes up through senior year, but my involvement has grown beyond just being an athlete.
As I got older, I began refereeing youth soccer and flag football games for younger players in the same league. Being both a player and a referee has taught me valuable lessons about responsibility, fairness, and leadership. As a referee, I am responsible for making quick decisions, managing competitive situations, and ensuring that the game remains safe and respectful for everyone involved. It has been meaningful to give back to the same community that helped me develop my love for sports. Even after my playing career ends this year, I plan to continue refereeing so I can remain involved and help younger athletes grow.
Another important extracurricular experience has been tutoring students in mathematics at my school. Math has always been one of my strongest subjects, and I enjoy helping younger students understand concepts that may seem difficult at first. Through tutoring, I have learned the importance of patience, communication, and encouragement.
I am also proud to be the co-founder of Student Strivers, an initiative focused on connecting students with job and internship opportunities so they can gain early work experience. Through this project, I have seen how access to opportunity can help students build confidence and independence.
All of these experiences have shaped me into someone who values leadership, service, and perseverance. As a first-generation college student, I hope to pursue my education with the same determination my mother showed in raising me. My goal is not only to achieve success for myself but also to create opportunities for others and give back to the communities that helped me grow.
Simon Strong Scholarship
Everyone faces adversity at some point in their life, and those experiences often shape who we become. One of the greatest challenges in my life was growing up in a home affected by addiction and domestic violence. My father struggled with drug addiction, and the environment at home was not always safe or stable. Eventually, my mother made the incredibly difficult decision to leave that situation so she could give me a safer and more secure life.
From that moment forward, my mother raised me on her own. Being a single parent was not easy, and there were many times when she struggled to make ends meet while balancing work and the responsibility of raising a child alone. Despite those challenges, she always found a way to provide for me and make sure I had what I needed. She made sacrifices so that I could focus on school, sports, and opportunities that would help me build a better future.
Watching my mother’s determination had a huge impact on how I approach adversity. Instead of letting difficult circumstances define us, she showed me that resilience and perseverance can create a path forward. Her example taught me that challenges should not be viewed as barriers, but as motivation to work harder and stay focused on your goals.
Because of those experiences, I learned to approach life with determination and gratitude. I focused on my education and worked hard academically, developing a strong passion for mathematics and problem solving. I also became involved in activities that allowed me to give back to my community, such as tutoring younger students and volunteering in service programs.
Sports have also played an important role in helping me develop resilience and leadership. I have been involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization since I was in kindergarten, playing soccer and flag football. As I got older, I also began refereeing games for younger players in the same league. Being both a player and a referee taught me discipline, responsibility, and how to stay calm when faced with challenges or pressure.
The adversity I experienced growing up shaped me into someone who values perseverance, empathy, and hard work. It also motivated me to help others whenever I can, whether through mentoring younger students, volunteering in my community, or creating opportunities for others to succeed.
If I could give advice to someone facing similar circumstances, I would tell them that your environment does not define your future. Difficult situations can feel overwhelming, but they can also become the motivation that pushes you to succeed. Surround yourself with people who support you, focus on your education and goals, and remember that your challenges can become the source of your strength.
Adversity is never easy, but it can shape character and create resilience. My experiences have taught me that even when life is difficult, determination, hard work, and support from others can help you build a better future.

Sports have also played an important role in my personal growth. I have been involved with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization since I was in kindergarten. Over the years I have played both soccer and flag football, and those experiences helped shape my love for athletics and teamwork. This year marks my final season playing because the league only goes up through the senior year of high school.
At the same time, I have also taken on the role of referee for youth soccer and flag football games within the organization. Officiating games requires focus, fairness, and the ability to make quick decisions under pressure. Being both a player and a referee has given me a unique perspective on the importance of sportsmanship, leadership, and responsibility. It has been meaningful to return to the same league that I grew up playing in and now help younger athletes learn and enjoy the game. Even after my playing career ends this year, I plan to continue refereeing for Yorkville. In many ways, it feels like a full-circle experience.
Giving back to my community is also very important to me. I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels, where I help deliver meals and make wellness calls to homebound seniors. These interactions have shown me how meaningful small acts of kindness and service can be for people who may feel isolated or alone.
I am also proud to be the co-founder of Student Strivers, an initiative focused on connecting students with job and internship opportunities. Through research and outreach, we aim to help students gain early work experience and develop independence and professional skills.
As a first-generation college student, pursuing higher education presents significant financial challenges. Receiving this scholarship would help ease that burden and allow me to focus more fully on my studies and career goals. I plan to pursue a field that combines my interests in engineering, entrepreneurship, and sports technology while continuing to mentor others and give back to the community that helped shape who I am today.
Overcoming Adversity - Jack Terry Memorial Scholarship
WinnerDr. Jack Terry’s story is deeply inspiring because it demonstrates the power of resilience, perseverance, and hope in the face of unimaginable hardship. Losing his entire family during the Holocaust and surviving multiple Nazi concentration camps is something few people could endure. Yet despite those horrific experiences, Dr. Terry rebuilt his life, pursued an education, served in the U.S. Army, and later became both an engineer and a psychoanalyst. Even more inspiring is that he dedicated much of his life to sharing his story with students, helping others understand history while spreading a message of hope and resilience.
His story resonates with me on a personal level because I had the opportunity to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland in June 2025. During that visit, I walked through the main concentration camp at Auschwitz I and also saw the remains of the concentration and extermination camp at Auschwitz II-Birkenau. Seeing those places in person made the history feel very real and deeply emotional. Walking through the grounds where so many people suffered made it difficult to fully comprehend the magnitude of what happened there. At the same time, it made me reflect on the incredible strength it must have taken for survivors like Dr. Terry to rebuild their lives after experiencing such unimaginable loss.
While my life experiences are very different from Dr. Terry’s, I also grew up facing adversity that shaped the person I am today. My childhood was affected by addiction and domestic violence in my home. My father struggled with drug addiction, and my mother made the courageous decision to leave that environment so she could give me a safer and more stable life. From that point forward, she raised me on her own without support, working extremely hard to provide for me.
There were many times when making ends meet was a challenge, but my mother always found a way to provide for me and make sure I had what I needed. She made many sacrifices so I could focus on my education and have opportunities she did not always have herself. Watching her perseverance taught me the importance of resilience, determination, and hard work.
Because of those experiences, I learned to approach challenges with motivation rather than discouragement. I worked hard academically and developed a strong passion for mathematics and problem solving. I also became involved in leadership and service roles at school, including mentoring younger students and tutoring in math. Helping others succeed academically has shown me how powerful encouragement and support can be in shaping someone’s confidence and future opportunities.
Dr. Terry’s life reminds me that education can be one of the most powerful tools for rebuilding and creating positive change. His determination to pursue higher education and help others despite everything he endured inspires me to approach my own education with purpose.
As I continue my studies, I hope to combine my interests in engineering, entrepreneurship, and sports to create innovative solutions and opportunities that help others succeed. I also want to continue mentoring students and helping young people gain access to opportunities that can shape their futures.
Dr. Terry’s story shows that adversity does not have to define a person’s life. Instead, it can become the foundation for strength, growth, and service to others. His example inspires me to work hard, persevere through challenges, and use my education to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Love Island Fan Scholarship
If I could create a brand new Love Island challenge, it would be called “Truth or Trouble.” The goal of the challenge would be to test how well the couples actually know each other while also creating a little chaos in the villa.
The challenge would take place around the fire pit, where all the islanders gather while two couples compete at a time. In front of them would be a large spinning wheel with different categories such as Secrets, Preferences, Red Flags, Future Plans, and Island Gossip. Each round, one islander spins the wheel and answers a question about their partner.
For example, a question might be: “What is your partner’s biggest red flag in a relationship?” or “What is one thing your partner secretly finds annoying about you?” The partner then writes down what they think the answer will be. If the answers match, the couple earns points and stays safe for that round.
However, if the answers do not match, things get interesting. The islander who answered incorrectly has to pull a card from the “Trouble Box.” These cards could lead to funny or dramatic consequences. For example, they might have to reveal a secret, answer a risky question from the group, or even swap partners for the next round of the challenge.
To raise the stakes, the couple with the lowest score at the end of the challenge must go on a surprise “Truth Date,” where they are asked even deeper questions about their relationship. Meanwhile, the winning couple gets a private romantic date outside the villa.
This challenge would create a mix of humor, honesty, and a little bit of drama, which is exactly what makes Love Island entertaining. It would test communication, trust, and how well couples really understand each other. It would also reveal hidden feelings or tensions in the villa, which could lead to new connections, surprising arguments, or even stronger relationships.
“Truth or Trouble” would quickly become one of the most talked-about challenges of the season because it forces islanders to be honest while keeping the fun and unpredictable energy that makes Love Island so addictive to watch.
Jessie Koci Future Entrepreneurs Scholarship
I plan to study engineering in college because I have always enjoyed solving problems and understanding how things work. Mathematics has always been one of my strongest subjects, and I find satisfaction in working through complex problems until I find a solution. Engineering allows me to apply that mindset to real-world challenges and develop systems, technologies, and solutions that can improve people’s lives. I am particularly interested in areas where engineering intersects with sports, technology, and data, such as sports analytics or performance technology.
My interest in entrepreneurship comes from both my personal experiences and my desire to create opportunities not only for myself but also for others. Growing up, I saw how hard my mother worked to provide for me as a single parent. Watching her determination and perseverance taught me the importance of independence, resilience, and hard work. Those lessons shaped my belief that building something of your own can create stability and opportunities that extend beyond yourself.
One example of this entrepreneurial mindset is an initiative I helped start called Student Strivers. My goal with this project was to connect students with job and internship opportunities so they could gain early work experience and develop professional skills. Through research and outreach, we focused on helping students build confidence and independence by exposing them to opportunities that might otherwise be difficult to access. Starting something like this taught me that entrepreneurship is not only about business, but also about solving problems and creating value for others.
I believe I will be successful in my business endeavors because I approach challenges with discipline, persistence, and a willingness to learn. Many businesses fail not because the ideas are bad, but because people give up when obstacles arise. My upbringing taught me that setbacks are part of growth and that perseverance is essential to achieving long-term goals. I am willing to work hard, adapt when necessary, and continue learning from both success and failure.
Leadership and responsibility have also been important parts of my development. Through roles such as mentoring younger students, tutoring in mathematics, volunteering in my community, and refereeing youth sports, I have learned how to communicate effectively, make fair decisions, and stay calm under pressure. These experiences have helped build the discipline and character that entrepreneurship requires.
To me, a successful life is not defined only by financial success or career achievements. True success means building something meaningful, helping others grow, and using your talents to create opportunities for people around you. I want to build a future where I can apply my skills in engineering and entrepreneurship to create innovative solutions while also mentoring others and supporting programs that help young people reach their potential.
Success, in my view, means using the opportunities you have been given to improve not only your own life but also the lives of others.
Student Referee Scholarship
One of my favorite memories as a referee happened during a youth flag football game with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization. It was a close game between two teams that were both very competitive, and the players were extremely invested in the outcome. Late in the game, there was a play near the goal line where a player believed he had scored a touchdown. From my angle, however, I clearly saw that his flag had been pulled just before he crossed the line.
When I made the call, the player was disappointed and immediately looked frustrated. Some of the parents on the sidelines also began reacting to the decision. In that moment, I realized that being a referee requires more than just knowing the rules of the game. It requires confidence, fairness, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
Instead of reacting emotionally, I stayed composed and explained the call clearly and respectfully. I told the player what I saw and reminded both teams to stay focused on the game. After a moment, the players reset, and the game continued. The play did not determine the final outcome, but the situation reminded me how important it is for referees to remain impartial and professional even when others disagree.
Experiences like that have taught me valuable lessons about leadership and responsibility. As a referee, players, coaches, and parents depend on you to ensure that the game is fair and safe. That responsibility requires strong communication skills, confidence in your decisions, and the ability to handle difficult situations with maturity.
Officiating youth sports has also helped me develop patience and discipline. Younger players are still learning the game, and sometimes emotions can run high. As a referee, I try to remember that the goal is not just enforcing rules but also helping create a positive environment where young athletes can learn teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect.
Being involved in sports in this way has strengthened my character and helped me grow as a leader. It has taught me the importance of fairness, integrity, and accountability. These are lessons that extend far beyond the field and influence how I approach challenges in other areas of my life, including school and community involvement.
Looking ahead, I hope to continue officiating youth sports as I move forward in my education. Sports have always been an important part of my life, and being a referee allows me to stay connected to the game while helping younger athletes develop their skills and confidence.
In the future, I hope to remain involved in sports in some capacity, whether through officiating, coaching, or working in areas like sports analytics or technology. Regardless of the path I take, the lessons I have learned as a referee about leadership, fairness, and responsibility will continue to guide me throughout my life.
Raise Me Up to DO GOOD Scholarship
Being raised in a single-parent household has had a significant impact on the person I have become and the goals I have set for my future. My mother raised me on her own after making the difficult decision to leave a relationship affected by addiction and domestic violence. From that point forward, she took on the full responsibility of providing for our family while working hard to create a safe and stable life for me.
Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the strength, determination, and resilience it took for my mother to raise a child without support. There were times when making ends meet was a challenge, but she always found a way to provide for me. She made sure I had a home, food on the table, and the opportunity to focus on my education. Even during the most difficult moments, she never allowed our circumstances to limit the expectations she had for my future.
Watching my mother’s perseverance taught me some of the most important values I carry with me today: resilience, responsibility, and gratitude. I learned that success is not simply about talent or intelligence, but about the willingness to work hard and keep moving forward even when life presents obstacles. Her sacrifices motivated me to make the most of every opportunity I have been given.
Because of my upbringing, I have always been driven to create a better future not only for myself but also for others. Education has been an important part of that journey. In school, I have worked hard academically and discovered a strong passion for mathematics and problem solving. I also enjoy helping others succeed, which led me to become a math tutor where I work with younger students who need additional support and encouragement.
In addition to academics, I have tried to contribute positively to my community. I mentor younger students through leadership roles at school, volunteer in my community, and referee youth sports. These experiences have shown me how important it is to give back and support others whenever possible.
Looking ahead, I hope to use my talents and education to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. While I am interested in fields like engineering, entrepreneurship, and sports analytics, my ultimate goal goes beyond a specific career title. I want to use whatever skills and opportunities I gain to help create opportunities for others.
One example of this goal is an initiative I helped start called Student Strivers, which focuses on connecting students with job and internship opportunities so they can gain early work experience. I believe that when young people are given opportunities early, it can change the direction of their future.
Being raised by a single mother has taught me that success is never achieved alone. It comes from the support, sacrifices, and guidance of those who believe in you. My future goal is to honor my mother’s sacrifices by building a life where I can not only achieve my own goals but also help create opportunities and positive change for others in my community.
William T. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship
One experience where I felt I made a meaningful impact in my community was volunteering with Citymeals on Wheels. Through this program, I helped deliver meals and participate in wellness check-ins for homebound seniors in my community. While the primary purpose was to ensure they had access to food, I quickly realized the experience was about much more than delivering a meal.
One moment that stayed with me happened during a delivery when I spent a few extra minutes speaking with an elderly woman who lived alone. What started as a quick conversation turned into a longer discussion about her life, her family, and how quiet her days had become. She told me that sometimes the meal deliveries were the only interaction she had that day. That moment helped me understand that small acts of kindness can have a much larger impact than we realize. Something that seemed simple to me made a meaningful difference in someone else’s day.
I was motivated to get involved because I believe it is important to give back to the community, especially to people who may not always have the support they need. Growing up, my mother worked extremely hard to provide for me despite many challenges. Seeing her perseverance taught me the importance of compassion and helping others whenever possible.
One of the challenges I encountered was realizing how much isolation some people experience, especially older adults who live alone. At first it was difficult to fully understand how meaningful a brief conversation or visit could be to someone. Over time, I learned that community service is not only about completing a task but about showing people that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.
Through this experience, I learned the importance of empathy, patience, and connection. I also learned that leadership and service often come from small actions that show care and respect for others. These lessons have influenced how I approach other areas of my life, whether it is mentoring younger students, tutoring peers, or volunteering in my community.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue contributing to my community in meaningful ways. As I pursue my education and career goals, I want to remain involved in service initiatives and mentoring programs that support young people and underserved communities. I also hope to continue expanding initiatives like Student Strivers, which I co-founded to help students connect with job and internship opportunities so they can gain early work experience and build independence.
This experience reminded me that creating positive change does not always require large actions. Sometimes it begins with simple acts of service, compassion, and a willingness to show up for others. Those are lessons I plan to carry with me throughout my life.
Second Chance Scholarship
I want to make a meaningful change in my life because I have seen how difficult circumstances can shape a family’s opportunities. Growing up, my home was impacted by addiction and domestic violence. My father struggled with drug addiction, and my mother made the incredibly difficult decision to leave that environment so I could grow up in a safer and more stable home. From that point forward, she raised me completely on her own.
Being a single parent was not easy for my mother. There were many times when she struggled to make ends meet while balancing work and raising me without support. Even during the hardest moments, she always found a way to provide. She made sure I had food on the table, a home, and the opportunity to focus on school and activities that would help me grow. Watching her perseverance shaped how I view challenges in my own life. It taught me that change requires hard work, resilience, and belief in a better future.
Because of my upbringing, I decided early on that I wanted to create a different future for myself and eventually help others do the same. Education became the most important path toward that goal. Throughout high school, I have worked hard academically and developed a strong passion for mathematics. I enjoy solving complex problems and challenging myself to think critically. My interest in math led me to become a math tutor at my school, where I help middle and lower school students build confidence in a subject many students find difficult.
Beyond academics, I have worked to grow as a leader and contribute to my community. I serve as a Peer Leader and Student Ambassador at my school, mentoring younger students and helping support the school community. I also referee youth soccer and flag football games with the Yorkville Youth Athletic Organization, which has helped me develop leadership, communication, and responsibility.
Giving back to the community is important to me. I volunteer with Citymeals on Wheels by delivering meals and making wellness calls to homebound seniors. Experiences like this remind me how meaningful small acts of kindness and service can be to someone who may feel isolated.
One initiative I am especially proud of is co-founding Student Strivers, a student-led effort focused on connecting young people with job and internship opportunities. Through research and outreach, we aim to help students gain early work experience so they can develop independence and professional skills.
Receiving this scholarship would make a meaningful difference in my life. As a first-generation college student, the financial burden of higher education is significant. This support would allow me to focus on my education and continue working toward my goals without placing additional strain on my family.
In the future, I hope to pursue a career that combines my interests in engineering, entrepreneurship, and sports, possibly in sports technology or analytics. I also want to help create opportunities for others by mentoring students and continuing initiatives like Student Strivers so more young people have access to education and career opportunities.

My father struggled with drug addiction, and my mother made the incredibly difficult decision to leave that environment so she could give me a safer and more stable life. That decision required tremendous courage. From that moment on, she raised me on her own without support, determined to give me the best upbringing she possibly could.
Being a single parent was not easy for my mother. There were many times when she struggled to make ends meet while trying to balance work, responsibilities, and raising me on her own. Even during the hardest moments, she always found a way to provide. She made sure I had what I needed, whether it was food on the table, a safe home, or opportunities in school and activities that would help me grow. Watching her work through those challenges taught me what true strength and perseverance look like.
Seeing my mother face adversity with determination shaped the way I view obstacles in my own life. She showed me that difficult circumstances do not determine your future. Instead, they can motivate you to work harder and become stronger. Her sacrifices inspired me to make the most of every opportunity I have been given.
During moments when things felt uncertain growing up, my faith helped me stay grounded. It reminded me that challenges are part of life, but they can also help build character and resilience. My faith helped me stay hopeful and focused on my goals, even when situations around me felt difficult. It taught me patience, gratitude, and the importance of trusting that hard work and perseverance will lead to better opportunities.
Because of my upbringing, I approach my education and responsibilities with a strong sense of purpose. I work hard academically and have developed a particular passion for mathematics. Problem solving has always come naturally to me, and I enjoy the challenge of working through complex problems until I find solutions. That mindset has helped me succeed in school and also allows me to help others as a math tutor, where I assist younger students in understanding concepts that may initially seem difficult.
I also try to give back to my community whenever possible. Whether mentoring younger students, volunteering with organizations that help people in need, or refereeing youth sports, I believe it is important to contribute positively to the community around me. These experiences have helped me develop leadership skills, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for helping others.
As a first-generation college student preparing for the next chapter of my life, I carry with me the lessons my mother and my faith have taught me. I understand the value of resilience, discipline, and compassion. My goal is not only to achieve success for myself but also to create opportunities for others who may face challenges similar to the ones I have experienced.
My faith continues to guide me as I move forward. It reminds me that even in difficult circumstances, perseverance, belief, and hard work can turn challenges into motivation and purpose.
