There are moments in life when you feel distinctly out of place like a puzzle piece that doesn't quite fit. High school is like the first place you find yourself. Identifying your friends, foes, likes, dislikes, even your strengths and weaknesses. Over those four years, you ask yourself the same questions. “Who am I? What am I going to become?”
Over the next four years, I would learn that discovering who you truly are is less about finding a single, concrete identity and more about exploring different versions of yourself, trying on new roles, and learning from both the successes and failures that come along the way. What truly started my shift in personality was the people. My teachers, my peers, my family. They changed my mindset and my perspective.
It wasn’t till junior year I finally felt like I had myself figured out. I got into different things, and eventually, I found Sports Medicine. Then I stumbled my way into our school's training room and saw something different. A beautiful, welcoming community of peers that taught me so much. I looked at everything differently, I sat and realized I only wanted to help people. I think that's when I realized I wanted to change the world, even if it was only a tiny bit.
That’s when I started working harder. I was still unsure of what my role in medicine was. I started researching, looking for anything I would be good at. Not only good though, I need to exceed. I found being an ultrasound tech on TikTok one day. It was fun, it helped people. I could make a difference in someone’s life. I found myself in a summer program at Grady, and I could explore almost any and every department of the hospital.
My first day was June 3rd. I was excited. I just so happened to sign up for one of the ultrasound-related seminars when the schedules were released. I drove downtown after waking up early only to discover that it had been canceled. Seeing that I was already there I didn’t want to drive all the way home. I stayed and waited to see if there were any left-over slots for the day. It wasn’t on the list. As a Child Life Specialist, I had no idea what it was. However, it was in my specialty—the trauma unit.
I had the opportunity to meet children who were admitted to the hospital due to serious injuries. I didn't have to take their vitals, take their blood, or administer medication. All I had to do was talk to them and make sure they felt comfortable. I brought them games and we’d play together. We discussed how they arrived, how they felt, and the life they’d return to after being released. Some of them were proud of me, they didn’t know what they wanted to do. To them I had it all figured out and was starting my journey. Little did they know they changed my life.
I had a hospital encounter when I was younger. And I didn’t have a Child Life Specialist to sit and talk to me. I could see the difference I had made. I adored it. I felt the happiest here. Making younger patients feel comfortable in a situation where you truly don’t get comfort. That’s how I figured it out. What I was going to do, how I was going to make a difference. As a Child Life Specialist, I will support the future generation during their difficult times. Since I am who I am. Someone who makes a difference.
