Lyndsey Scott Coding+ Scholarship
My world was shaped by a series of frameworks. Even as a teenager, structure was the language I used to understand myself. In my early years, I would spend countless hours in my unassuming room, fine-tuning video game strategies, dissecting musical compositions, and refining Japanese sentences, driven by a need to understand each system to its fullest extent. To me, mastery was like a universal formula; with enough effort, I believed I could achieve anything. However, everything shifted when my hands could no longer keep up. I was diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and had to take a step back. Losing the activities that had structured my worldview left me restless. I missed having systems to refine and problems to solve. That shift pushed me to engage with complexity in new ways, including coursework in mathematics and science. Calculus emphasized algebraic reasoning, while Chemistry and Biology grounded me in the logic of physical and living systems. I discovered that the same principles I valued never left, but were represented differently. Careful execution, iteration, and clear reasoning became foundational to my academic problem-solving. That integration became clear when I noticed concepts from the classroom surfacing in my personal projects. From translating unit conversions into precise timing for a rhythm game to integrating parabolic calculations into a physics engine, it's these moments that reinforced, for me, that learning is most powerful when theory becomes something tangible. Beyond my own growth, a $5,000 scholarship would create the space I need to reduce those long work hours, as well as allow me to redirect that time toward open-source educational software that goes far beyond the classroom. With enough support, I will be able to completely shift from working independently to making meaningful collaborations. Pursuing study abroad opportunities would allow me to expand my perspective on how cultural context shapes intuitive user experiences and collaborative development across both the United States and Asia. My early interest in Japanese and structure taught me how communication is influenced by culture, and studying technology in an international setting would strengthen my adaptability while deepening my understanding of how social conditions sculpt innovation. My goal isn’t simply to achieve financial success, but instead to build both educational and technological tools that deliver lasting value, inspire others with a similar curiosity, and ultimately give back to the community that influenced my trajectory. Just as systems once helped me understand the world, I now aspire to build ones that serve it.
