I am on a journey to master the art of cybersecurity; my passion for technology constantly consumes my life and daily activities. As an avid reader and writer, I thrive on learning and innovation. My dream is to build a cybersecurity empire, safeguarding the digital world's future. Though it's a bold goal, I aim to serve my country as the National Cyber Director, safeguarding our digital frontier from both internal and external threats.
I cannot achieve this goal alone. I have constantly striven to get minorities to enter the world of cybersecurity, such as Latin and African students, both of which I am descendants of. As a minority, I know how difficult it can be to get into jobs like cybersecurity. Gaining the motivation to enter a world of technology can be even more challenging. This is why I constantly volunteer for outreach events, to connect with people like myself; each member recruited is a shield in the cyber landscape. I've gone to events such as the CITE conference, speaking on panels to elite members of the cyber world, and sharing information that is critical to getting more minorities involved in this critical job.
Connecting to people is one of my favorite things to do. Going to college whilst completing high school courses has given me even more opportunity to do so. I've been able to compete in events like the Cyberpatriot Competition, the National Cyber League, and more; all the while completing my associate's degree.

As a student at MVC pursuing a degree in cybersecurity, I know how difficult it can be to get access to technology. When I was in high school, I was a part of the cybersecurity program there, and the lab wasn't really lab, It was just portable with computers in it. When we did get a lab, it cost $20,000+ at minimum. That is a lot of money, and I know that's something a great deal of schools cannot afford. It is unfortunate that tech is a notoriously inaccessible field due to the great amounts of funds needed to pursue it.
However, as I pursue my degree in cybersecurity, I want to make positive contributions to my community. Through my experiences, I've seen how financial struggles can negatively impact the pursuit of a tech field. When I was in the cyber club, there were quite a few activities that required money to participate in. Everything from the uniforms to the competition required some amount of money. It was heartbreaking to see some friends of mine not be able to enjoy the activities because they couldn't pay. I felt even worse, since I didn't have any money to give to them.
You can have passion, ambition, confidence, etc., but those traits are hard to use when faced by a financial barrier. My family had financial struggles. Knowing this, I want to create my own Risk Analysis company and create affordable services so that small businesses can utilize them. More than that, I want to find solutions to enhance daily activities through technology. I would love to one day create some scholarships of my own; scholarships that would send students to tech colleges, or get them a computer, some kind of aid so they didn't have to worry about money.
People are always worrying about money, and about their jobs. I want to ease their mind off the money part, so they can direct their full focus towards their career and contributions to society. See, cybersecurity is quickly becoming one of the fastest growing jobs in the United States. The more cybersecurity analysts we get, the safer our country and systems are, and I consider that a win-win; they get the financial aid they need to go to college, buy the necessary equipment, and we get people who will safeguard our digital future and landscape. My future of philanthropy is not too far, and my ambition will drive me to create my business and to give to my community what they have given to me.
Thank you for considering my application.

Simon Strong Scholarship
Growing up in a community as a BIPOC student, I have faced numerous challenges that have shaped my journey and strengthened my resolve to succeed. One of the most significant challenges I encountered was during my junior year of high school when I was accepted into a college. This sudden change uprooted my life, as I had to leave behind my friends and the stability I had known.
Adjusting to a new environment and school was incredibly challenging. I felt isolated and struggled to keep up with my studies while also helping my parents with their issues. The stress of our financial situation also weighed heavily on me, but I was determined not to let these obstacles define my future. I set my sights on academic excellence as a way to rise above the circumstances.
During this time, I found support through volunteer work at my church. Teaching kids provided me with a sense of purpose and a way to give back, despite my own struggles. I tutored younger students and assisted with after-school programs, which not only helped them academically but also provided a positive spiritual environment where they could thrive. This experience taught me the importance of community and faith.
Through perseverance, I managed to excel academically, maintaining a GPA of 3.4 while balancing my responsibilities at home and my volunteer work. The adversity I faced taught me several valuable lessons. It reinforced my belief in the power of education and the impact it can have on transforming lives. It also showed me the importance of empathy and support, and the significant impact you can have on others.
If I could offer advice to someone facing similar circumstances, it would be to never lose sight of your goals and to seek out support. Adversity can feel overwhelming, but it also presents an opportunity to grow stronger. Lean on your community, whether it be friends, family, teachers, or mentors, because you don’t have to face challenges alone. Moreover, find an outlet where you can contribute and make a difference, as helping others can provide a sense of fulfillment and purpose even in the toughest times.
Simon M. Humphrey’s legacy of supporting underrepresented students is an excellent reminder that everyone deserves a fair chance at education and success. With this scholarship, I aim to continue my educational journey and contribute to the field of cybersecurity by starting a penetration testing and risk analysis business. My goal is to protect others from cyber threats and educate my community on good cyber practices.
Thank you for considering my application and for supporting students like me.

Cybersecurity & The Latinx Community Scholarship
Truthfully, I never expected to be interested in cybersecurity. If not for my impatience, I probably wouldn't know much about it!
You see, my obsession with cybersecurity started about three years back, when I was in high school. One of my classes was Spanish 3, and though I like Spanish, after just a few days of being in the class, the instructor was someone who I knew I couldn't handle for an entire year. I asked my counselor for alternatives to take, and the options she laid out for me were Pottery, Psychology, and Cybersecurity. I didn't know much about the first two options, and cybersecurity sounded fun, if it meant working on a computer the whole class period.
After just a few weeks of being in the class, I was absolutely hooked. It helped that I had excellent teachers, who made cybersecurity very interactive and fun to learn about, utilizing videos and coding programs like Skill Struck. Learning about proper cyber practices, coding languages like Python...I must admit, it was like a drug, and I was addicted. From that moment forward, I knew this is what I wanted to do as a career, as a lifestyle.
Thank God for my patient parents, who had to deal with my incessant yapping everyday about how much I loved cybersecurity. I'd always come home and spout off some technical nonsense about coding or computers, while they would smile and nod their heads. Even though we don't make much money, my parents still spared what they could to get me into some of the cyber programs that were at my school; my favorite was the Cyberpatriot Competition. The uniform was blue and gold, and I felt so proud to wear it. Teamwork, critical thinking, practical and advanced knowledge were all required in order to succeed. Our team got involved in many competitions, and these competitions not only sharpened my skills, but served to further my hunger for knowledge. I competed that year, and for the next two years, up until now. Gaining platinum in nationals was my greatest accomplishment, but it wasn't enough for me, I needed more.
I entered Middle College in my Junior year of high school, and started taking computer classes. I completed computer basics, learned about graphic design, and went beyond the beginner coding languages, taking a class dedicated to C++. Even at this point, I wasn't too confident in myself. Not only was I a minority in this field, but I wondered, was I even smart enough? Did I have the knowledge? The practical skills? The drive, and the need to succeed?
Scoring an A in my C++ class (a coding language that many are not fond of) greatly bolstered my confidence. Another motivational factor is the salary! My God, have you seen the salary of some of these cybersecurity jobs? Some have $80,000-$100,000 as a starter! Fond of money as I am, it isn't really for me; it's for my parents. They've worked tirelessly to make sure I had a shot at life, which is more than a lot of other people can say. I want to work as hard as they did, make lots of money for them, and return the favor many fold.
As of now, I'm completing my Associate's Degree at Moreno Valley College. Once I am done with that, I've already been accepted to Cal State University of San Bernadino to get my bachelor's in cybersecurity. From there, I want to reach other minorities like me and encourage them to enter the world of cybersecurity, and hopefully become the National Cyber Director someday.
Kyle Lam Hacker Scholarship
I love problem solving, especially when it's something that can't be solved through conventional means; That's a part of why I love cybersecurity, and why I plan to specialize in penetration testing once I get my degree in cybersecurity and information assurance. When thinking of a time I impressed others with my hacking/tinkering skills, one event comes to mind.
I'm very into working on virtual machines and hardening them to prevent any bad actors from taking sensitive information. Therefore, I entered the Cyber Patriot competition. The goal of this competition is to reach the max amount of points within the set time frame. The goal is to reach 100 points within 4 hours. 4 hours may seem like a long time, but it can go by quickly. During this event, I was working on an Ubuntu machine. Ubuntu is a type of Linux distribution. I can spend hours on end looking through logs and users to make sure everything is as it should be. There are a lot of factors that need to be considered to deem a virtual machine as safe. There is a list of users; making sure users have their proper roles, as well as secure passwords. Installing a fire wall, installing and running anti-virus software, checking login data to ensure no one unauthorized has entered the system, checking ports to make sure no dangerous ports are open, etc.
Me and my research partner were doing great. We were on the cusp of getting a perfect score with another hour to spare, something that hadn't been done for years. We were at 95 out of 100 points (16 out of 17 vulnerabilities solved), and we knew that solving the last vulnerability would get us the perfect score. All the things I mentioned above we had completed. Though we had a near perfect score, we were nervous. Messing up anything now would set us back, so we decided to err on the side of caution and not tamper with any system details that may lose up points. That's when an idea came to me.
See, oftentimes during the competition, there's at least one issue hidden in plain sight. There is typically at least one issue where you have to find the source of sensitive information that has been compromised, or at risk of being compromised. So, I decided to look at the documents we had on our system. By typing "cd Documents," which is the command to "change directory" to the Documents section. Nothing was out of the ordinary, but I didn't stop there. Using the command to list ALL files in that section (including hidden ones), I typed "ls -a." And would you believe what I found? A hidden document containing ALL the login information (emails, passwords, usernames) for every user in the system. Even the systems administrator's information was there. Acting quickly, I purged the document from the system, only after taking a picture of the information, just in case that document was actually needed. After a few tense moments of waiting to see if we gained or lost points, me and my research partner saw that brilliant notification: "CCS Client: Points Gained." We quickly took pictures of our score to prove we got a perfect 100, signed out with an hour to spare, and celebrated.
I know this isn't a huge moment that changed humanity, but I believe it embodies the hacker spirit. It was a big moment for my whole team, and it felt great to discover a roundabout solution for a difficult problem.
Thank you for considering my application.

Book Lovers Scholarship
Hello Scholarship Team,
If there's one book that I would urge the entire world to read, it would undoubtedly be "The Lost Eleven."
"The Lost Eleven" narrates the true, incredible, and often overlooked story of eleven American soldiers during World War II. These men faced adversity beyond imagination, and their journey embodies the essence of bravery and sacrifice. Choosing this book is an invitation to the world to witness the untold narratives of those who fought valiantly, shedding light on the often overshadowed corners of history.
What makes "The Lost Eleven" my pick is its ability to tell the story of the Wereth Eleven, African-American soldiers who fought courageously for freedom in WWII—only to be ruthlessly executed by Nazi troops during the Battle of the Bulge. The characters, real heroes in their own right, become a universal symbol of perseverance against insurmountable odds. Moreover, "The Lost Eleven" encourages reflection on the importance of acknowledging and preserving our history. It prompts us to delve into stories that might have faded away, emphasizing the significance of honoring those who came before us. In a world that often races forward, this book serves as a reminder to pause, learn, and appreciate the sacrifices made by individuals for the greater good.
Despite their bravery and sacrifice, these eleven soldiers were omitted from the final Congressional War Crimes Report of 1949. For seventy years, their files—marked secret—gathered dust in the National Archive. But in 1994, at the site of their execution, a memorial was dedicated to the Wereth Eleven and all African-American soldiers who fought in Europe.
"The Lost Eleven" remains one of my favorite books to date. I'm glad to be told a story of heroism, bravery, tragedy, and sacrifice, a story which was almost lost to time. By reading this book, I gained a deeper understanding of the resilience inherent in the human spirit.
Thank you for considering my book choice, as well as my application.

Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
My journey of volunteerism has been an enriching odyssey, one that has profoundly shaped my core values and steered me toward meaningful career and life goals. The opportunity to serve and mentor young minds in both a church and cybersecurity context has kindled a deep sense of purpose within me, aligning seamlessly with the values and legacy of Jimmy Watts.
At an early age, I embarked on a path of community service by volunteering to teach elementary kids at my local church. This experience was not just a commitment but a calling—one that allowed me to impart knowledge, instill values, and witness the transformative power of education. It was during these moments that my core values began to crystallize.
First and foremost, my volunteer experience emphasized the value of service itself. It revealed the joy of giving back to the community and the profound impact it can have on the lives of others. This sense of service, rooted in my Christian faith, became an intrinsic part of who I am. It instilled in me a strong belief in the importance of making a positive contribution to society, a belief that I carry forward in my career and life goals.
One of the fundamental lessons I learned from my volunteer work with elementary kids is the power of mentorship. It's about guiding, nurturing, and shaping young minds, instilling not only knowledge but also the values of kindness, empathy, and resilience. This mentorship experience forms the cornerstone of my core values—a commitment to inspire, empower, and uplift those around me.
As I look ahead to my career and life goals, I am drawn to the field of cybersecurity. However, my vision extends far beyond merely establishing a cybersecurity company. I aspire to build a company that transcends the traditional corporate model, one that fosters a deep sense of community engagement and positive change.
Jimmy Watts' legacy of service and his clear vision of "reasons to be" in his medical career resonate deeply with me. Just as he aimed to make his work permanent by serving God, healing others, and providing for his family, I share a similar aspiration. My "reasons to be" in the world of cybersecurity are rooted in the desire to not only protect digital realms but also to serve the community.
I envision my cybersecurity company as a hub of positive change, where community engagement, mentorship, and education are integral components. I don't seek to sit atop a throne of authority; instead, I aim to be actively involved in community outreach, cybersecurity education, and mentorship programs. My goal is to nurture the next generation of cybersecurity enthusiasts and empower them with the knowledge and values that will shape a safer digital world.
In conclusion, my volunteer experience has been a crucible of values and purpose, profoundly influencing my core values and life goals. Adrin Ohaekwe Memorial Scholarship
I've learned through experience that life is a lot like Chess. Many moves you make will have consequences in the future, whether they be positive or negative. Knowing which moves to make requires insight and forethought. Inevitably, you will make a mistake. The best option is to learn from that mistake and make up for it.
I wish to pursue upper-level education, preferably at UCLA. During my time there, I will major in Computer Science and minor in Biology. I will need patience for this goal, and Chess has taught me patience. Before one player defeats the opponent in a game of chess, there are often roughly 40 moves. These actions must be well thought out, organized, and carried out. A minor distraction could cost you a pawn, and being overly aggressive with your play could cause you to be the victim of a checkmate. This applies to real life. Each action you take in life should be well thought out. Acting on instinct may be our primary reaction, but being organized produces the best results.
Through Chess, I've learned to identify patterns and react to them. This entails not only being aware of the various move patterns each chess piece is capable of, but also being aware of the possible outcomes of each move and choosing wisely based on where each piece is positioned on the chessboard. I've also learned to mix creative thinking, pattern detection, and problem-solving. I understand how to wait patiently for the ideal occasion to make a bold move and that every setback only presents an opportunity to improve the following time. In life, bold moves are risky but can provide enormous benefits if executed correctly. And if the bold move ends up failing, it's important to learn and move on.
Many of these skills translate to real life. When someone takes your piece, it's best to take it back, but it doesn't have to happen immediately. Cold calculation prevails over hot-headed revenge. Calculations and patience are general skills that are applicable in everyday life. Pattern recognition is another general skill and it allows you to adapt to certain situations. These are also skills employers look for in high-level employees. I hope to be able to impress future employers when I show I have these skills.
Creative thinking and problem-solving are more general skills that aid in everyday life. Again, these are valuable soft skills that employers want their employees to have.
