Entering my freshman year of high school was the most defining moment in my life. At just 13 years old, I experienced the loss of my mother. An event that left me overwhelmed, confused, and uncertain about what my future would hold. While others around me were beginning to explore who they were, I was learning how to cope with grief while taking on new responsibilities as a high schooler. This experience forced me to mature quickly, but it also became the purpose of my motivation to pursue higher education and create a meaningful future. In the process of that experience, I made a decision, to not let my circumstances define me. Instead, I chose to view education as my primary goal. School became more than just a daily routine, it became my primary focus of stability and purpose during a time when everything else felt uncertain. I understood that if I remained focused and committed, I could build a future that reflected my goals and aspirations, rather than my struggles. This mindset motivated me to push myself academically, even when it was difficult. Throughout my four years of high school, I maintained high honors, demonstrating resilience, discipline, and determination. Balancing academic success while coping with personal loss was not easy, but it taught me how to manage my time effectively, stay focused, and persevere even during the most challenging moments. There were times when motivation was hard to find, yet I continued to remind myself of what I wanted to accomplish. These experiences strengthened my work ethic and reinforced my belief that consistency and perseverance can lead to success, regardless of the obstacles I faced. Losing my mother also shaped the kind of future I hope to create. During that time, I became more self aware of how vulnerable people can feel when navigating through situations without guidance or support. This realization sparked my passion for helping others and inspired my goal of becoming a lawyer. I want to advocate for individuals who feel unheard, particularly those involved in the criminal justice system. My personal experiences have given me a deeper sense of empathy and a strong sense to promote fairness, equality, and justice. Pursuing higher education is essential to achieving this vision. I plan to earn a degree in Criminal Justice at Virginia State University, which will provide me with the knowledge and skills necessary to continue on to law school. In addition to my coursework, I intend to seek internships, mentorship opportunities, and other experiences that will expose me to real-world legal environments. These opportunities will help me develop the skills needed to become an effective and ethical defense attorney. The moment I lost my mother not only shaped my motivation to pursue higher education, but it also defined the future I strive to create. It transformed my pain into purpose and taught me the value of resilience, responsibility, and determination. I am committed to using my education as a tool to uplift others and create positive change. Through hard work and dedication, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goals and make a lasting impact in my community.
