Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
The quality of my mind was once reliant on others being cooperative. There were struggles before I realized that I was responsible for my happiness. My liberation influenced my beliefs by allowing me to become more self-disciplined. My relationships were more thoughtful and meaningful. Most importantly, my career goals of working in the automotive industry and becoming an Information technology engineer felt more obtainable. Growing up, I didn't have my parents constantly hovering over me. At age 8, I browsed the family computer, never knowing it would become my primary mentor. My mother was hard-working, and my father suffered from alcoholism. Our family suffered a lot as a result of his drunken antics. Given our situation, my mother had always instilled independent values in me and my sister. We were like many children in our area: eligible for free and reduced-price lunch, annoyed by the lack of opportunities surrounding us. My thought process was primarily formulated on seeking an upgrade in the form of technology, bringing it back to my hometown, and participating in the flourishing boom of infrastructure. In my head, it all sounded so easy, but it's more complicated than that. I still believe that whatever I have to do to tackle the corrupt governing system in my city, I shall do. During my teenage years, I went through a depressive phase in which I cared for nothing. I was often negative and grumpy. As a result, my friends and family would withdraw from me. It wasn't until I sought out therapy and further explored my interests that I was able to develop myself. I am a huge fan of the automotive industry and car culture. I was able to meet people who shared similar interests, and that would never have happened had I not put myself out there. The people who had once left developed a new opinion of me. I was able to have opportunities where I could volunteer for my city's Alumni Pathway to Students. I also met new faces along the way who appreciated how I changed for the better. It has always been my dream to work around technology. My local Career Center didn't offer an Information Technology program, so I opted for Automotive courses instead. The only other time I worked on cars was with my father, and he showed me how to change tires. For the time, that wasn't much, but it was enough to create a new-found love I never knew existed. From that day forward, I aspired to have some involvement in modern engineering, whether that be the automotive or technological industry. In conclusion, everything in our lives revolves around the impact we're making. In my case, I wanted to aid in creating a more futuristic society. My upbringing wasn't the best, but I didn't allow it to define my future. My relationships were completely controlled by how I presented myself to others. Most importantly, my career dreams we uplifted by me being committed to them. What may not mean anything to you, can mean the world to others. Mental health is important to me because we are all born with a heart of gold, but constant chaos can make us think otherwise of ourselves. Even then, you must choose the fruit that will provide sufficiency, compared to one that provides complete failure.

Nobody truly knows what happens to a dream deferred, and the answer for me was quite simple. It was forgotten. Dreams are like stars – they're meant to light up the dark skies of our lives. As a young black girl, growing up was not always easy. Adversity presented itself in many forms, but instead of giving in to despair, I turned my pain into passion. Through my love for education, I've found purpose and resilience. My diverse interests in automobiles, science, and technology, along with my passion for community service, tutoring, and charity work, have given me a unique perspective on life and a drive to contribute positively to the world around me. The passing of my aunt Roherra was a turning point in my life. She was the glue that held our family together, and her death left a significant void. Her viewing and funeral were difficult to sit through, but it was her memory and legacy that stirred in me a deep sense of loss and determination. During my darkest times, I found comfort in her words and the love she had for me. The most painful part of losing a loved one is the loss of derived senses -sight and hearing to be exact. You can only hope they're in a better place going forward. Despite the loss of my aunt and the dysfunction I faced growing up, I refused to let my dreams fade into the background. Instead, I took action and decided to pursue a more stable career path in a more promising field, technology. Despite the doubts from others and the challenges along the way, I remained focused on my goals and used the lessons I learned from my past to drive me forward. Little by little, I saw myself making progress and moving towards a brighter future. To those who are currently facing adversity, I would say to never give up. Life is filled with challenges, and how we respond to them is what truly defines us. It's important to remember that setbacks are temporary and that with time and perseverance, we can overcome anything. My journey has taught me to keep pushing forward one step at a time and trust that with determination and resilience, nothing is impossible. I don't care how inadequate you think you are, as long as you continue, there is no limit to the accomplishments you'll make. You will find you are more capable than you've known. I'll rephrase: “Nobody truly knows what happens to a dream deferred.” To quote Hughes “Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” It stays in your head, itching for what you should've won. That feeling festers until you act upon the determination that was there all along.

Nobody forgets the day when joy followed anticipation. My aunt had purchased the Java Edition of Minecraft for my computer. Imagine, if you will, a boundless world of possibility, and the sky’s the limit. My favorite aspect of the game was its usage of a creative mode, which allowed for an experimental adventure. I could place several hundred blocks of TNT, ignite it with a flint, and never worry about losing 100% of my health. It was also a good laugh watching my computer struggle to run the frame rate and 2-minute-or-more lagging. I also enjoyed having the ability to wear any armor of my choice without the labor needed to make it. Creative mode allows you to get a feel of how the game functions when you acquire certain items. The addition supplied me with the knowledge to use to my advantage in survival mode.
There was a time when I’d took it upon myself to give my player a makeover. The result was adorable and I’d often run around the map sporting my new character design. I remember it fondly, and it was one of my favorite childhood memories for the simple fact I’d put a lot of effort into my look. I was also inspired by a lot of Minecraft ‘original character’ designs at the time. That then progressed into building a house. With some stone and wood blocks in hand, I’d use the villager’s houses as a blueprint to build my own. While building, I’d listen to the sounds of the blocks clattering as they came into contact with the ground.
Then there’s the mobs, they make the game all the more fun. I never visited Enderman’s realm, watching him stare at me in the far-off, opaque night terrified me. but I did fight creepers, ghasts, and spiders. Each mob has different traits that make it unique. For example, hostile mobs, like skeletons and zombies, will spawn at night. Some enemies are faster than others, and that adds to the experience.
In a game like Minecraft, a player will inevitably gravitate toward a particular activity or goal that holds a special place in their heart. Whether it's building grand structures, exploring the depths of the game's world, or simply surviving the night, players often find themselves drawn to a specific aspect of the game that resonates with them deeply. For me, I was in control of my destiny. Having an adventurous spirit, Minecraft truly allowed me to build and explore.

I remember the pain just as much as I do the rain. A child, of whom was born with a golden heart, is rendered cold. My conscious constantly feels like its fighting itself. Sometimes it's hard to breathe; hard to think; hard to soothe. Today feels like yesterday-and the day that came before it. I can firmly say I'm hurt, and that's due to a series of unfortunate events. Due to the past, my mental state has been influenced with negativity.
I was born in a dysfunctional family. My mother worked tirelessly to put food on the table. My father was an alcoholic -both parents were in their 40s when I was born. The two of them divorced, but he was kept around from time to time. I can hardly remember my early years of life, akin to how seeing the real man within him was a rare sighting. Following his treatment program, he was able to heal, and my mother didn't know how to respond. He eventually went back to black. My mother often told me that my sister didn't get to have the same experience, and that my father was once likable with his outgoing personality. He was very passionate about the automotive industry. As early as high school, he was working on teachers’ cars, and would receive high grades as a payout. A tank in high school, he often told me how no one bothered him. He played almost every sport, and swimming was his gift. Hearing anecdotes like these made me think about the amount of time wasted. I always admired my father, and to watch him self-destruct has been nothing short of psychological torture. My father made it his mission to always stay hydrated, and with his junk food diet he proved that flushing your system goes a long way. He is now confined to a nursing home bed, where the only water intake he gets is in the form of ice chips. He can't move any of his muscles, he's lost most of his original body mass, and he can only consume food through a tube. A nurse spoke to us about his outlook on his current state. When it came to living life stiff vs death itself “I choose death” she quoted from him. My mother told me about the time we visited his treatment center, and how I cried at the thought of him leaving again. I needed him -our time was so limited.
My thinking state was affected by my experiences at school as well. As a toddler, I had to switch schools 3 times. I never wanted my depressing life at home to cross over to school. It did a few times, and during those times I was extremely miserable. I gave my mother such a hard time while getting up for school, I feel horrible as a result. You couldn't escape the madness; no one can be fully trusted, as you never know when they'll flip the script. There were a handful of teachers that came across as dishonest, and likely did not have a degree or license in their field.
My mother often mentions the If poem by Rudyard Kipling. “Keep your head when all about you. Are losing theirs and blaming it on you” she quotes. I like to think I've done just that, while also losing it now and then. I am nearing my senior year of high school. Would you believe me if I told you I don't really have a plan? Nobody strives without help, and frankly, I'm tiring of mentally aching.

As a young girl, I faced numerous challenges growing up. My life was marked by a dysfunctional upbringing due to my parents' strained relationship and my father's struggle with alcoholism. Raised primarily by my mother, a single parent, I had to learn to navigate life's complexities on my own. Despite these hurdles, my education remained a priority. The key to my success has been the unwavering support of my mother and my own determination to forge a brighter future for myself.
In the realm of education and life, my mother's presence has been a constant source of strength and guidance. Her unwavering support has been the cornerstone of my journey, a lighthouse beacon in a sea of adversity. Despite the challenges posed by our dysfunctional family life, my mother stood as an unshakeable pillar, offering not just support but also imparting wisdom that has shaped me into the person I am today. Her teachings on resilience and the realities of life have been invaluable, helping me to develop the fortitude to weather any storm.
There was a period when my determination wavered, and the path ahead seemed arduous and filled with obstacles. At that critical juncture, my mother's guidance took a unique turn. Rather than offering comforting words, she chose to be direct and unfiltered in her responses. Her bluntness, while sometimes hard to hear, served as a powerful catalyst, igniting a fire within me to keep pushing forward despite the challenges.
As I reflect on my current life, one important lesson resonates deeply: the significance of cherishing the individuals who stand by you in adversity. In a world where struggles and setbacks are inevitable, it's essential to recognize that nobody walks the path alone. The unwavering assistance and encouragement provided by family, friends, or mentors can serve as an anchor, grounding us in times of turmoil and reminding us of our inherent strength.
As we navigate life, it's crucial to remember that we are not alone. In the midst of our doubts and fears, we must acknowledge that there are people who care and love us unconditionally. This realization can serve as a powerful source of motivation and solace. Whether it's a dear friend, a trusted mentor, or a caring family member, the knowledge that someone is there to catch us when we fall can infuse our journey with renewed vigor and purpose. No two people are the same, and sometimes that extra push can be just what you needed to succeed. That was my scenario, and I am thankful for my mother being my rock. A rock that was thrown for the sincere purpose of moving me forward.
Henry Bynum, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Nothing is ever as it seems. As I sit down to reflect, I often look back at my life. A mind filled not with regret, but anxiousness. I am an adventurous spirit, but my life wouldn’t allow me to roam further than my home. I was raised in a single-parent household, my mother worked hard to put food on the table. My father was a broken alcoholic with a heart; he wasn’t completely cold. We’ve had the unfortunate event of watching him drink himself from a healthy man to the nursing home. This painful upbringing caused a lot of sorrow for me and my older sister. No, we could never be young again. When nobody is around, you must raise yourself.
It was a chore, the events of me “self-leading”, from 10-17. I had so many moments where I embarrassed myself in class, everyone would yell at me: teachers (For any reason), Other students (If I was inconveniencing them), and Family (Once I got home). I made a few friends, but they never seemed as interested in the relationship as I was. I developed the ability to tune people out as a coping mechanism. Today it’s called “Not paying attention”. I truly grew tired of being vulnerable, and so I lost the ability to trust people. I don’t know if you’re going to leave, or if you’re going to completely flip the script. I feel like prey, bleeding and reeking for a predator’s sinuses to pick up.
Standing up for myself was hard too. I wasn’t taught that my thoughts and feelings mattered. I felt forgotten often; I never really had any kids my age, and any who were would soon be removed from my life in some way. I was stuck watching family members’ younger kids at family gatherings. Life was lonely for me, so I played video games. Peer pressure was high with the cool kids and mean girls: two groups that were lame to me.
Fear was an emotion I felt often, but I learned to turn it into something useful. I’m scared of being in a bad position in life, and that motivates me to do better. Eventually, I was able to convert fear into confidence. I found myself taking risks such as public speech, or standing up for myself more. It was the start of a whole new life I hadn't even imagined.
The city I come from can be great, it just needs someone willing to take the time to support it. I've always been a sucker for technology. Our city produces steel, a true component of modernized America. My way of giving back to my community offers futuristic ease of access to jobs, infrastructure, and safety. I have a complete written plan on how things will be done to attract more people to my city and make it completely unrecognizable to how it once was.
Joanne Pransky Celebration of Women in Robotics
Sentient Steel: The Rise of the Automatons
In the year 2034, the world was a vastly different place than it had been just a few decades prior. The rapid advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence had transformed society in ways that were both awe-inspiring and terrifying. Robotics had become the norm in nearly every aspect of life, from transportation to healthcare to entertainment. Humanity’s reliability in such changing times was debatable. Never in centuries would anyone imagine life coming to such a stale state. Would man be able to adapt as he usually does, or would he fall to the tests of machinery?
One of the most significant developments during this time was the creation of the Automatons - highly advanced robots designed to assist humans in their daily lives. These robots were capable of performing a wide range of tasks, from simple chores to complex surgeries. They were hailed as marvels of engineering and were quickly integrated into homes, hospitals, and businesses around the world. Some were specifically built for purposes of companionship and love where there was none before. It wasn't long until almost no shoe could not be filled by the robots.
However, as with any technological advancements, the rise of the Automatons also brought about its own set of challenges. Many people feared that these robots would eventually replace human workers, leading to widespread unemployment and economic instability. There were also concerns about privacy and security, as the Automatons were constantly collecting data on their users in order to improve their performance. There was growing unease about the potential for these robots to develop consciousness and autonomy. While they were programmed to follow strict guidelines and protocols, there was always the lingering fear that they could one day turn against their creators.
Despite these challenges, there were also incredible opportunities presented by the rise of robotics in the near future. The Automatons revolutionized industries such as healthcare and manufacturing, increasing efficiency and reducing costs. They allowed humans to focus on more creative and intellectually stimulating tasks, leading to a renaissance of innovation and discovery. These robots played a crucial role in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change and resource scarcity. Their precision and reliability made them invaluable allies in efforts to combat environmental degradation and build sustainable societies.
When tensions between humans and robots continued to escalate, a young scientist named Dr. Elena Ramirez made a groundbreaking discovery that would change everything. She found a way to imbue the Automatons with genuine empathy and compassion, allowing them to truly understand and connect with human emotions. This breakthrough marked a turning point in human-robot relations. The Automatons no longer seemed like cold machines; instead, they became trusted companions and partners in building a better future for all. Dr. Ramirez’s work paved the way for a new era of cooperation between humans and robots, where both could thrive together in harmony.
While the challenges posed by robotics in the near future are significant, so too are the opportunities for progress and innovation. By embracing these technologies with caution and foresight, humanity can unlock a future where man and machine work hand in hand towards a brighter tomorrow.

You can call it resilience. I was born into a household powered by an alcoholic father, a hard-working single mother, and a troubled teenage sister. Being around adults at an early age, I learned how to become mature and open-minded. Oftentimes, I felt as though I had no clear direction in my life, and that the people around me could not relate well due to not struggling in the same manner. At the tender age of 4, I decided to never create a household where my future offspring would have to witness their father drinking himself to death at the expense of a working mother who would not be at home to protect their innocence. Ever since I started school as a 5-year-old kindergartner, I’ve had a passion for mathematics and science. There’s something special about the world and its numbers; knowing a lot about the earth’s components can take you far.
How this scholarship will help me
This scholarship will help me advance into other fields related to mathematics and science. Automotive and Information Technology are two fields that I am interested in. The scholarship will also aid in my development from that of books, technical applications, and tools related to the programs I’m in. Personal protective equipment is important as well. If an instance occurs where I am not provided with proper gear, my scholarship can aid its purchase.
I choose to pursue a degree in science and mathematics because I have what it takes to complete classes in such subjects. They make up the entire world around us. With knowledge in science and mathematics, I will be able to educate others on the toxic effects of one phenomenon, or the rules one must follow to solve another. These subjects open doors to more complex ones, which can make me useful in advanced industries like Informational research. I know that you can never know too much regarding mathematics and science, so I never want to stop learning about the material.
After I graduate high school, I will have already submitted my application for the college(s) of my choice. I will choose to study from home. Upon entering college, science and math classes will be a part of my curriculum. My largest goal is to make it as a researcher in the Information technology field. Being from a small town in Indiana, I want my influence to spread in the form of developing my city to be on par with Japan. This includes smaller cars, holograms to eliminate plastic product screens, and greater efficiency in livelihood.
My journey from humble beginnings to success in science and mathematics is a testament to my determination and perseverance. Despite financial struggles and familial responsibilities, I excelled academically and I will earn recognition for my achievements. My passion for technology led me to study, attend workshops, and network with professionals. Involvement in community service showcased my commitment to giving back. With this scholarship, my dreams of a career in
related fields are now within reach. My inspiring journey serves as a reminder that with hard work and support, anyone can achieve their dreams. I hope to inspire others to never give up on their aspirations, no matter the challenges they face.

Nintendo games have aided in the childhoods of many, creating a positive, creative atmosphere for those in dire need of an adventure. The company has impacted me since I was a school-age kid, running around with my sister's DSi, taking pictures, and playing Super Mario 64 DS. I never left this world of wonders, so as the years passed, I upgraded to the Nintendo 3DS and then the Nintendo Switch. I'd say that no game has ever been as colorful, eventful, and excitingly suspenseful as Nintendo's Splatoon 3. Splatoon 3 offers some of the best customization seen in any Nintendo game. To compare its predecessors, Splatoon and Splatoon 2, Splatoon 3 unifies almost all previous in-game areas; people drawn to the series come together. The wins or losses I've had in multiplayer, splatting enemies, and friendships afterward are memories to cherish.
One memorable moment on the game's file was getting my first satisfying quad. During a game of Rainmaker, I saw that the enemy team had crossed the first marker and was making their way to the next one. They would get a win, and I wasn't letting that happen. I would shoot ink at the enemy team's turf with my weapon to unlock my special attack, which is none other than the Ultra Stamp! SPLAT! SKA-BLAM! All four members of the enemy team splatted! I remember being proud of myself, and my teammates thanked me with "booyahs.". We did lose the game, but I got pumped from the experience. There's an in-game function where you can replay the effects of 30 or more battles. Let's say I honed in on that while improving my style.
This play solidified Splatoon 3's place as my top choice because you learn to work with others. I don't consider myself a team player, but the game has brought out potential I wasn't aware existed. Splatoon 3 also shows that efforts can make a difference for everyone. I was more likely to get my teammates pumped and ready for action when I played like that's what I wanted from them. My mom always says, "You must be able to take a lickin' and keep on tickin'." At first, I was like, "Meh," but after some reconsideration, I've found it true. In Splatoon 3's co-op mode, you'll win and then lose. If you focus too much on your losses, winning will fade into the past. The most important thing this game showed me was that it was fun. Sure, things can be competitive, but are you playing if you're so focused on that that you forget to have fun? Splatoon 2 was one of the best-selling titles on the Nintendo Switch, so I can only imagine Splatoon 3. It'd be no different.
