Rugby family to me means, home away from home. My rugby family offers me the support and love I didn't know I needed. My rugby family was my lifeline when things got tough. In my second year of college women's rugby, I had a terrible accident that felt like the end of the road for me. I had torn my ACL, and MCL, and partially tore my meniscus all in one game. I had no clue what was happening – never gone through something like that before. The confusion I felt initially was what held me together at first. Once I went through all the testing and got an official diagnosis I was a wreck. But I was able to fall back on my sisters (teammates). They were there for the phone call helping me what seemed like every step of the way. I somewhat dissociated from the team, from the sport altogether. But my rugby family was always sure to remind me my presence matters, my contribution to the team matters, and they were looking forward to my return. The pain, both physical and mental, made me think my playing days were over, and life had no point anymore. Recovering from that was a long journey, but my team, my rugby family, had my back. The support, love, and care I got from them during the whole process were like nothing else. So, when I say rugby family, I mean more than just teammates. I mean a real family, we may not be blood relatives, or look the same, or have the same religion but that doesn't mean anything. I am so lucky to have a family away from home that I can truly rely on. They have my back, we have so much fun just amongst ourselves and I just feel safe with them. They were the ones who helped me get back on my feet – literally. Upon my return to play this season, they were always rooting for me. They were so excited to see me back on the field, which boosted my confidence. Their cheers pumped me up, their love fixed my broken spirit, and their care made sure I didn't give up. Here we are, a year after my surgery, fully recovered both physically and mentally thanks to the family I have at home and the family I have here on my team. Looking back, I realize a rugby family is more than just a team; it's a bunch of people who stand by you, laugh with you, and lift you up when you're down. They turned out to be my secret weapon, proving that when life throws curveballs, having a tight-knit crew by your side can turn things around.

As a future social worker, my unique contribution to making mental health care affordable and accessible to anyone in need would involve various strategies. Firstly, I would advocate for policy changes at different levels of government, emphasizing the importance of mental health care and urging for increased funding and resources. Collaborating with organizations, community leaders, and policymakers, I would work towards creating a supportive environment that prioritizes mental health. In addition, I would actively engage in community outreach programs, particularly targeting marginalized and underserved populations. By organizing workshops, support groups, and awareness campaigns, I would provide valuable information and resources, empowering individuals and communities to seek and access mental health services. Furthermore, I would explore innovative solutions leveraging technology. This might include developing user-friendly mobile applications or partnering with existing telehealth services to extend mental health care to remote areas. By harnessing digital platforms, I could bridge the gap between mental health professionals and those in need. Through my passion for social work, dedication to mental health advocacy, and creative approaches, I am committed to making mental health care more affordable and accessible. By breaking down barriers and ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to access the support they need, I believe we can significantly improve the well-being of individuals and communities.

Leaving my familiar hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, behind and relocating to Concord, North Carolina, during my sophomore year of high school was a daunting prospect. However, the embrace of my new rugby team made the transition easier than I could have ever imagined. The concept of a rugby family quickly became an integral part of my life, shaping not only my athletic journey but also my personal growth. As I ventured into the unfamiliar territory of a new school, I faced numerous challenges. The size of the school and the adjustments that came with it were overwhelming. Amidst this uncertainty, the camaraderie and support I found within my rugby team were unwavering. Through countless practices, intense matches, and shared victories, my teammates became more than just fellow players; they became my closest friends and confidants. Their unwavering support and encouragement pushed me to excel both on and off the field. While the physical aspects of the game were exhilarating, it was the intangible qualities of the rugby family that truly left a lasting impact on me. Through the ups and downs of our collective journey, we forged unbreakable bonds of trust, resilience, and mutual respect. Each member of our team brought unique strengths and perspectives, contributing to a dynamic environment where we could learn from one another. This diversity of experiences within our rugby family allowed us to see the world through different lenses and appreciate the value of embracing our differences. As graduation approached, I found myself at a crossroads. The question of which college to attend and whether I would even pursue higher education weighed heavily on my mind. However, fate intervened in the form of college rugby recruitment. Suddenly, doors I never knew existed swung open, offering me opportunities I had only dreamed of. The support and guidance from my coaches and teammates, both past and present, were invaluable in navigating this pivotal moment in my life. Joining my collegiate rugby family was a transformative experience. It exposed me to new people, cultures, and life experiences I would have otherwise missed. The diverse backgrounds and perspectives of my teammates enriched my understanding of the world and broadened my horizons. Together, we embraced the challenges of balancing academics, athletics, and personal growth, forming an unbreakable bond that extended far beyond the rugby pitch. Moreover, the rugby family has taught me the importance of resilience, perseverance, and teamwork. The game itself demands mental and physical toughness, but it is the support and camaraderie of my teammates that truly make the difference. We celebrate victories together, lift each other up during defeats, and continuously strive to improve as a collective unit. Through rugby, I have learned to face adversity head-on, to never back down from a challenge, and to always extend a helping hand to those in need. In conclusion, the concept of a rugby family has profoundly shaped my life. From the day I left Indianapolis to my collegiate years, the sense of belonging, support, and shared experiences within the rugby community has been my guiding light. I am eternally grateful for the friendships forged, the lessons learned, and the personal growth achieved through this extraordinary journey. As I move forward, I carry the values instilled by my rugby family, ready to face any obstacle with determination and a strong support system by my side.

I always hated the word “parents”. I never had “ parents”. I always had a singular parent. My mother, I was raised by women alone. My childhood was the best it could have been given our circumstances, yet it still wasn’t enough for the time being. I always felt I was missing something. All my friends had two-parent households. Their dad would pick them up from school. Or show up to athletic events. But mine? My dad couldn’t make my sister and me a priority. But my mom made sure to never let that limit our lives. Growing up as a young lady raised by a single black mother has been an incredible journey, marked by strength, determination, and resilience. My mother, a remarkable woman, has navigated the challenges of single parenthood with unwavering love and dedication. Her influence has played a pivotal role in shaping my character, instilling valuable lessons, and empowering me to overcome obstacles and strive for greatness. This essay aims to reflect upon the transformative impact of my upbringing, highlighting the ways in which it has shaped my identity and contributed to my personal growth. Her selflessness and unwavering support fostered a deep sense of gratitude within me, as well as a determination to make the most of the opportunities she had worked tirelessly to provide. I strive every day to repay her for her sacrifices so she can know that they were not in vain. Resilience became a defining trait in both my mother's life and mine. As a single black mother, she faced unique challenges in a society that often fails to acknowledge the immense strength and potential of women like her. Despite this, my mother showed me the importance of perseverance and maintaining a positive outlook in the face of adversity. Her resilience inspired me to push through difficult times, empowering me to believe in my own capabilities and affirming that setbacks should never define my path but instead serve as stepping stones toward personal growth. Growing up as a young lady in a society with deep-rooted prejudices and stereotypes has made me acutely aware of the importance of embracing my identity. My mother played a crucial role in helping me develop a strong sense of self and taught me to challenge societal expectations. This journey of self-discovery has empowered me to be an advocate for diversity and inclusivity, breaking barriers and inspiring others to challenge societal norms.
