Bio

As a child I watched my father in and out of prison, where he received his GED. Leaving me and my mom alone, sometimes this was better than them being together. In December of 2014 the holidays became something I would begin to dread for the rest of my life. As everyone is counting the days till Christmas…. 12, 11, 10… my father commits suicide. After 2014, my life was never the same. Scarred. Left with the past memories, guilt, regret, trauma, questions, and my own battle with mental illness and lifelong grief. After dealing with my own depression, anxiety and the pressures of school leading to fifteen days before my seventeenth birthday I tried to commit suicide. Even after that it all still felt like life was a dream, nothing seemed to feel real. It took me a really long time to truly feel awake again and a big part of me getting back to how I was is because of finally dealing with some of my past traumas and finding self-purpose through therapy and time. This event has changed my life forever but has also given me the motivation to persevere, and to want to touch others' lives. So, despite my obstacles I want to be someone in my community that the African American community can look up to and also be someone for the young black girl that truly thinks she’s all alone, dealing with those dark thoughts all by herself. I wish to be a role model, an advocate for people dealing with mental health issues and pursue a higher education to pursue a career in nursing.

ADHDAdvisor's Mental Health Advocate Scholarship for Health Students
Mental health has always been close to my heart. Growing up, I witnessed the challenges that come with mental health struggles firsthand, both within my own family and myself. These experiences shaped my understanding of the importance of mental well-being and deepened my desire to pursue a career in healthcare where I could not only support physical healing but also advocate for emotional wellness. A defining moment in my life was the tragic loss of my father to suicide. His struggles with mental health, particularly depression, deeply impacted our family. Losing him was not just a loss of a parent, but a sharp reminder of how vital it is for individuals to have the support and resources to cope with their emotional and psychological battles. I saw how his pain affected those around him and the silence that followed in the wake of his death. It was difficult to comprehend the complexities of mental health as a teenager, but through grief, I learned that the mental health struggles we face cannot be ignored or dismissed. As I pursue my nursing degree, I am committed to bringing these personal experiences into my future career. I plan to work with patients who face mental health challenges, using the skills I acquire through my studies to provide both physical and emotional support. Whether I’m working in trauma care, the NICU, or mental health settings, I will strive to create an environment where every patient feels heard, valued, and supported. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and I want to be part of a generation of healthcare professionals who are breaking the stigma and advocating for emotional well-being in every aspect of care. This scholarship would allow me to continue my studies, pursue my goals, and ultimately, become a nurse who not only heals the body but also nurtures the mind and spirit of those in my care. Mental health struggles should never be faced alone, and through my education and future career, I plan to make sure that others never feel alone in their journey. Thank you for considering my application. I am ready to give back to the community that supported me, and I can’t wait to continue my work as an advocate for mental health in healthcare.
    Larry Darnell Green Scholarship
Growing up as the child of a single mother, I have witnessed firsthand the unique challenges single-parent families face. My mother, who worked tirelessly to provide for us, often had to balance the weight of multiple roles caregiver, provider, and emotional support all while ensuring I had access to education and opportunities. The absence of my father, who was often incarcerated, left us with financial hardships, but my mother’s determination to raise me right never wavered. Her resilience shaped my own educational journey and instilled in me the importance of hard work and perseverance. As I progress in my own educational path, I am mindful of the barriers that single-parent households face. I know that without the unwavering support of my mother, I would not be where I am today, working toward my nursing degree. The financial burdens, emotional strain, and constant juggling of responsibilities can feel overwhelming for many in single-parent households, but it is through these challenges that I have learned the value of resilience, self-sufficiency, and community support. My ambition to become a nurse is driven by a deep desire to give back to my community, especially to those who are underserved or facing similar struggles. I plan to use my skills and knowledge to advocate for those in need, whether by providing healthcare to marginalized communities or by being a role model for young individuals who, like me, come from difficult circumstances. I also want to create programs that support single-parent families, helping them overcome financial and educational obstacles to give their children the best chance at success. Being a child of a single parent has shaped my educational journey by teaching me to persevere through adversity. I have learned to rely on my own strength, seek out resources and support, and remain focused on my long-term goals. By continuing my education, I hope to break the cycle of financial struggle that many single-parent families face and to create generational change in my community. In the future, I aim to give back by mentoring young people, particularly those from single-parent households, and showing them that their dreams are attainable, no matter their background. I want to ensure they know that even when the odds seem stacked against them, they too can succeed if they persist. With the help of this scholarship, I will be able to continue my education and work toward a future where I can give back to others who need it most. Thank you for this opportunity, and for honoring the legacy of Larry Darnell Green through this scholarship.
Powering The Future - Whiddon Memorial Scholarship
Adversity has shaped me into the determined and driven individual I am today. My educational journey has been a testament to resilience and perseverance in the face of life’s most challenging circumstances. In December 2014, my life was forever changed when my father tragically passed away by suicide. This devastating loss left my family and me grappling with immense grief, unanswered questions, and an overwhelming sense of loss. As a teenager, I not only had to navigate the emotional turmoil of this tragedy but also took on responsibilities that most young people do not face. Losing my father scarred me deeply, and the weight of that grief affected my academic performance and personal well-being. At 17, I reached a breaking point and attempted to take my own life. It was a dark time, but with therapy, support, and determination, I began to rebuild myself piece by piece. Confronting my mental health challenges head-on has given me a renewed sense of purpose and an unshakable resolve to turn my pain into motivation. Through this journey, I found my passion for STEM. Science has always fascinated me, and as I worked to heal, I became deeply interested in healthcare and technology. My goal is to become a nurse specializing in mental health care and to use my education to improve access and equity in healthcare systems for underserved communities. STEM offers a platform to create impactful solutions, and I want to be at the forefront of that change, leveraging technology to provide care and hope to those who need it most. Pursuing a STEM degree has come with its challenges, particularly financial ones. Coming from a low-income background, I’ve often had to juggle multiple jobs while attending school full-time. I earned my associate’s degree in Applied Science and worked as a home aide to gain hands-on experience in caregiving. The financial burden of tuition, books, and living expenses has been heavy, but I have never let it deter me from my goals. This scholarship would be a transformative support system as I work toward my bachelor’s degree in nursing. It would relieve the financial strain and allow me to focus more intently on my education and clinical training. More importantly, it would symbolize the continuation of Richard and Rebecca Whiddon’s legacy a commitment to perseverance, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge in STEM fields. Adversity has taught me the importance of resilience and the power of education to change lives. With this scholarship, I would not only honor the Whiddons’ memory but also carry forward their light by contributing to a future where science and care intersect to create a better world. Through STEM, I aim to make an enduring impact, bringing healing and hope to those who feel unseen and unheard.
    Wicked Fan Scholarship
Wicked holds a special place in my heart because it resonates deeply with my own experiences of being misunderstood. The musical's portrayal of Elphaba, the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West, speaks to my own journey of self-acceptance. Much like Elphaba, I've faced situations where my outward demeanor or actions have been misinterpreted, leading others to form opinions of me that were far from who I truly am. As a young woman of color, I often feel the weight of being perceived through a lens that doesn't reflect my true identity or intentions. Much like Elphaba, who was judged for her appearance and magical abilities, I've had to navigate the challenges of being misunderstood, and this has shaped who I am today. Elphaba’s story is a reminder that despite how others may perceive us, we have the power to define who we truly are. The themes of courage and standing up for what you believe in are also central to my own life. Throughout my upbringing, I’ve faced adversity, and I’ve learned that it takes immense strength to remain true to yourself despite the pressures to conform. Elphaba’s refusal to shrink back and Glinda’s journey of realizing her own power both inspire me to continue forging my own path and advocating for what I believe in. "Defying Gravity" is more than just an iconic song; it’s an anthem of empowerment. It reminds me that no matter how heavy the world’s expectations may be, I have the ability to rise above them and become who I am meant to be. Just like Elphaba, I’ve learned that the most important thing is to stand tall in my truth and embrace my individuality, regardless of how others may view me. Ultimately, Wicked has inspired me to embrace my uniqueness and to not be afraid of challenging the norms. It’s taught me that being different is not a weakness but a strength, and that in our differences, we can create real change in the world. This message is something I carry with me every day as I continue my journey toward becoming a healthcare professional, advocating for diversity and inclusivity in everything I do. Wicked has taught me to never stop defying gravity.
    Women in Healthcare Scholarship
Healthcare has always been an integral part of my life, from witnessing the compassion of nurses and doctors during my father’s passing to my own experiences as a caregiver. I’ve seen firsthand how healthcare professionals are not only providers of medical care but also advocates, emotional supporters, and leaders in their communities. These experiences ignited my passion to pursue a career in nursing and later open a med spa. As a woman, I recognize the unique strengths I bring to the healthcare field compassion, empathy, and a deep sense of responsibility for those in need. Growing up in a challenging environment, I faced adversity at a young age, losing my father to suicide and being raised by a single mother. These experiences instilled in me resilience and the desire to break generational cycles of trauma. It also fueled my drive to help others in meaningful ways, particularly those in underserved communities. I’ve worked as a Family Resource Navigator at Earl Boyles Elementary and a hospice caregiver, where I’ve seen the importance of providing not only medical care but emotional support. My goal is to merge both my passion for healthcare and my entrepreneurial aspirations by eventually opening a med spa that focuses on both physical and mental well-being. Women have historically faced challenges in the healthcare field, both in terms of access to education and advancement into leadership positions. As I pursue my nursing degree, I am determined to overcome these barriers and use my voice to inspire others. I believe that diverse perspectives are essential in healthcare, as they lead to more innovative solutions, increased compassion, and better patient outcomes. As a woman of color, I’m committed to breaking down these barriers and advocating for a more inclusive and diverse healthcare workforce. My hope is to use my experiences and education to empower others, particularly women and people of color, to pursue careers in healthcare and self-care. With the support of this scholarship, I will be able to continue my education without the financial burden and focus on my goal of becoming a nurse and eventually creating a space that combines wellness and medical expertise. I aim to make a lasting impact by providing compassionate care, advocating for inclusivity, and empowering individuals to take charge of their health and well-being. In conclusion, my pursuit of a degree in healthcare is driven by my desire to make a positive impact in my community, inspire future generations, and create a more inclusive, compassionate healthcare system. As a woman in the field, I am committed to overcoming challenges, breaking barriers, and leaving a legacy of empowerment and healing.

Community involvement has always been a cornerstone of my journey. As the Family Resource Navigator at Earl Boyles Elementary, I have connected families with essential resources, organized holiday toy drives, and worked at a local food pantry. Additionally, my role as a hospice caregiver deepened my empathy and strengthened my commitment to serving others with compassion and dignity. Failure has been a part of my journey, but it has also been a source of growth. One pivotal moment was during my first attempt at balancing work, school, and personal challenges. Arthur and Elana Panos Scholarship
My faith in God has been the cornerstone of my life, providing strength and direction through moments of joy and hardship. Growing up in a household filled with challenges my father in and out of prison, my mother working tirelessly as a single parent, and eventually losing my father to suicide my faith became my anchor. Through these trials, I learned to rely on God for guidance, comfort, and hope when life felt overwhelming. Faith helped me understand that even the most painful experiences have purpose, shaping me into a resilient, compassionate, and determined individual. In my darkest moments, prayer and scripture reminded me that God has a plan for my life. Jeremiah 29:11, which says, "For I know the plans I have for you," gave me the assurance that my struggles were not in vain. This belief has carried me through challenges like pursuing education without financial support, balancing multiple jobs, and working through my own mental health struggles. My faith continues to guide me as I work toward my career in nursing. I believe that God has called me to serve others, using my skills to bring healing and comfort to people in their most vulnerable moments. My long-term goal is to create a med spa that focuses on holistic wellness, providing both physical care and emotional support. This vision is deeply rooted in my faith, as I strive to create a space where people feel valued, loved, and cared for just as God sees us. Faith will also play a central role in my nursing practice by keeping me grounded in integrity, compassion, and humility. Nursing is not just about medical care; it’s about connecting with people on a human level, offering empathy and understanding. My faith teaches me to treat every patient with dignity and respect, regardless of their background or circumstances. Moreover, my entrepreneurial spirit is inspired by the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30), which emphasizes using one’s gifts wisely. I view my education and skills as talents entrusted to me by God, and I feel a responsibility to use them to serve others and build something meaningful. Establishing a med spa will not only allow me to provide for my family and create generational wealth, but it will also be a way to invest in my community and give back to those in need. Faith has taught me perseverance and patience qualities essential to both nursing and entrepreneurship. It has shown me that setbacks are opportunities for growth and that success achieved with integrity is far more meaningful than shortcuts. As I pursue my career, I will continue to lean on God for wisdom, strength, and the ability to make a positive impact in the lives of others. In everything I do, my faith reminds me that my ultimate purpose is to glorify God by loving and serving others. This scholarship would help me continue on this path, turning my faith-driven aspirations into reality.

Growing up in a single-parent household shaped me into the resilient and compassionate person I am today. My father was in and out of prison, leaving my mother to shoulder the responsibility of raising me alone. After his passing, her role as a single parent became permanent, and the weight of providing for our family fell entirely on her shoulders. Witnessing her perseverance taught me the importance of hard work, sacrifice, and unwavering determination. Living in a low-income household came with its own set of challenges struggling to make ends meet, navigating systemic barriers, and coping with the emotional toll of our circumstances. These experiences instilled in me a deep empathy for others and a desire to create meaningful change. I learned to see obstacles as opportunities to grow and developed a passion for helping those who face similar struggles. I plan to use my experiences to become a nurse, a role that aligns with my dedication to serving others. Specifically, I aspire to specialize in fields like trauma, neonatal or cardiac care while eventually establishing a med spa that promotes holistic health and wellness. My goal is to create generational wealth while offering resources and care to underserved communities. To achieve my dreams, I’ve worked multiple jobs, pursued higher education without student loans, and actively sought mentorship and scholarships. By channeling the lessons I’ve learned, I aim to inspire and support others, proving that resilience and determination can overcome any adversity.
John Young 'Pursue Your Passion' Scholarship
My chosen field of nursing is deeply personal and rooted in my life experiences. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the profound impact that care, compassion, and advocacy can have on individuals navigating their most vulnerable moments. The loss of my father to suicide when I was just a teenager, coupled with my own mental health struggles, ignited a desire within me to pursue a career that would allow me to provide hope and healing to others. Nursing, for me, is not just a profession it’s a calling to serve and uplift others in their times of greatest need. Nursing offers the unique opportunity to make a difference in individual lives and entire communities. I hope to impact the field of healthcare by integrating physical and mental health care, particularly for underserved and stigmatized populations. Mental health is often overlooked in traditional medical settings, yet it is a critical component of overall well-being. As a nurse, I want to address this gap by advocating for holistic care that treats both the body and mind. I aspire to break the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly in the African American community, and to ensure that patients feel safe, valued, and understood. In addition to providing direct patient care, I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals. Having faced significant obstacles in my own life, including navigating financial insecurity and educational challenges, I want to mentor young people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds, and show them that they, too, can rise above their circumstances to achieve their dreams. I hope to foster a culture of inclusivity and empathy within the healthcare system, empowering others to pursue careers that make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. My personal belief in the power of perseverance and purpose drives my commitment to this field. Despite the hardships I’ve endured, including my own mental health battles and overcoming systemic barriers, I’ve continued to push forward, earning both my general associate’s degree and an Applied Science associate’s degree. These accomplishments are stepping stones toward my ultimate goal of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in nursing and becoming a leader in holistic, patient-centered care. The legacy of John Young inspires me to chart a path of impact and innovation in my field. Just as he used his skills and determination to contribute to groundbreaking advancements, I aim to use my education and experiences to create lasting change in healthcare. By combining compassion, advocacy, and a commitment to lifelong learning, I hope to leave a legacy of healing, empowerment, and positive impact in the lives of others.
Eric W. Larson Memorial STEM Scholarship
My name is Jada Hampton, and my story is one of perseverance, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. As a young African American woman, I’ve faced significant challenges growing up in a family shaped by addiction, financial instability, and mental health struggles. These adversities, however, have fueled my determination to build a better future, not just for myself but also for others who face similar obstacles. Growing up, financial hardship was a constant reality in my life. My parents worked tirelessly to provide for my siblings and me, but the resources they had were limited. Many times, we had to make difficult choices between basic necessities, and the idea of pursuing higher education felt like an impossible dream. Despite these challenges, my parents instilled in me a strong work ethic and a belief that education could be a pathway to breaking the cycle of hardship that had defined our family for generations. In addition to financial struggles, my family faced emotional challenges, including the devastating loss of my father to suicide. His death left a void that was difficult to navigate, especially as I was growing into adulthood. My father’s passing was not only a personal tragedy but also a stark reminder of the importance of mental health and the support systems that many communities lack. These experiences deeply shaped my perspective on life and my career aspirations. Despite the many barriers in my path, I refused to let my circumstances define me. Instead, I used them as motivation to pursue a life of purpose and resilience. After graduating high school, I worked to support myself financially while earning my general associate’s degree and an Applied Science associate’s degree. Balancing work and academics were challenging, but it taught me discipline, time management, and the importance of persistence. My work as a home aide was more than just a job it was a calling that deepened my commitment to healthcare. I found immense fulfillment in providing care and support to individuals who were often overlooked by the healthcare system. My passion for STEM, particularly in healthcare, stems from my belief in its potential to change lives. Nursing is a unique field within STEM that bridges the gap between science and humanity. It requires not only technical expertise but also empathy and a deep understanding of people’s needs. For me, the ability to use science and technology to provide care and healing is incredibly rewarding. In today’s world, healthcare is rapidly evolving with advancements in technology and data-driven solutions. I am excited about the possibilities of integrating these innovations into patient care, especially for underserved communities. From telehealth platforms that bring care to remote areas to wearable health monitors that provide real-time data, the potential for technology to improve lives is limitless. I want to be at the forefront of these advancements, ensuring they are accessible to those who need them most. Financial instability was another significant obstacle I had to overcome. Pursuing higher education has always been a goal of mine, but it came with significant sacrifices. Working as a home aide while attending school was physically and emotionally demanding, but it reinforced my commitment to my education and my future. Every step I’ve taken has been with the goal of creating a better life, not just for myself but for future generations. My goal as a nurse is to address healthcare disparities and advocate for equitable access to care. Too often, underserved communities are overlooked in healthcare, leading to preventable illnesses and poor outcomes. I want to change that by using my STEM education to develop innovative solutions that bridge the gap in healthcare equity. For example, I am particularly interested in leveraging telehealth technology to reach individuals in rural and underserved areas. By providing virtual consultations and remote monitoring, we can ensure that more people receive the care they need, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status. Additionally, I hope to contribute to research and data analysis that informs policies and practices to make healthcare more inclusive and effective. Beyond my professional goals, I am passionate about inspiring and mentoring young women of color who aspire to pursue STEM careers. Representation matters, and I want to be a visible example of what is possible with determination and hard work. By sharing my journey, I hope to empower others to see themselves as innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders in their respective fields. Receiving the Eric W. Larson Scholarship would be a transformative step in my journey. The financial support would alleviate the burden of student loans and allow me to focus fully on my education and professional development. More importantly, this scholarship would be an affirmation of my efforts and a reminder that there are people and organizations that believe in my potential. This scholarship would also honor the legacy of Eric W. Larson, whose commitment to equality and support for women in STEM resonates deeply with me. As a woman of color pursuing a STEM career, I know firsthand the challenges of entering a field where we are underrepresented. This scholarship represents an opportunity to break those barriers and contribute to a more inclusive and diverse STEM community. My journey into STEM is fueled by my passion for healthcare, my commitment to breaking barriers, and my desire to make a meaningful impact. Despite the challenges I’ve faced, I remain determined to create a future where everyone, regardless of their background, has access to the opportunities and care they deserve. Through hard work, resilience, and the support of scholarships like this one, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goals and inspire others to do the same. Together, we can honor the legacy of Eric W. Larson and build a future where diversity, innovation, and compassion are at the heart of STEM fields. Thank you for considering my application and for supporting women of color in their pursuit of STEM careers.
    Women in STEM Scholarship
As a young woman driven by a passion for healthcare and a deep commitment to helping others, my journey into the STEM field is both personal and purposeful. Growing up, I witnessed the gaps in healthcare access and the devastating effects of those disparities on my community and family. These experiences inspired me to pursue nursing, a career that blends science, technology, and empathy, to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. My decision to enter STEM comes from a desire to address these inequalities and prove that women can lead transformative change in this field. I’ve always been fascinated by how science and technology intersect to solve real-world problems, especially in healthcare. From advancements in medical devices to the use of telehealth to reach underserved populations, the possibilities to innovate and improve lives are endless. I want to be part of that movement, using STEM to provide equitable care and advocate for communities often left behind. For me, pursuing STEM isn’t just about building a career it’s about breaking barriers. Women, particularly women of color, are underrepresented in STEM fields, and I’ve felt the weight of those challenges firsthand. At times, it’s intimidating to enter a space where you don’t always see yourself reflected. But instead of letting that discourage me, it’s become a source of motivation. I want to show other young women, especially those from similar backgrounds, that they belong here too that their voices, ideas, and contributions matter. This scholarship would be a vital step in my journey, not only helping to ease the financial burden of my education but also validating my efforts and aspirations. It would allow me to focus fully on my studies, learning the skills and tools needed to innovate in nursing and healthcare. I hope to use technology and data to bring better care to those who need it most, creating solutions that are both compassionate and forward-thinking. Beyond my own career, I want to pave the way for others. I hope to mentor and inspire young women to see themselves as leaders in STEM, breaking through the barriers that have historically held us back. Representation matters, and I want to be a visible example of what’s possible with determination, education, and support. This scholarship wouldn’t just help me achieve my dreams it would be an investment in the future of STEM, a field that desperately needs diverse perspectives. Together, I believe we can build a future where women not only thrive in STEM but lead it, using knowledge and curiosity to create a better world for everyone.

Addiction has affected my life in ways that I am only now beginning to fully understand. Growing up in an environment where addiction was present brought significant challenges: there were days of chaos, uncertainty, and moments when I felt completely powerless. Addiction created an unstable foundation in my early life, leaving me to navigate childhood with the heavy weight of my family’s struggles. Addiction runs heavily in my family on both sides. On my father’s side, I never had the chance to meet my grandmother because she died from a drug overdose. On my mother’s side, her relationship with her own mother has been estranged for years due to her mother’s long-term drug abuse, which ultimately destroyed their bond. While my parents didn’t fall into addiction like their parents, they displayed traits of addiction in other ways. This showed up in phases of heavy drinking, which often led to fits of rage, an attachment to street life, and obsessive-compulsive tendencies shaped by the instability they experienced growing up. However, these experiences also taught me resilience and ignited a determination to break this cycle. I realized early on that I wanted to build a different life one defined by stability, purpose, and well-being. To overcome the effects of addiction in my life, I have chosen to take a proactive approach toward self-care, personal growth, and education. One of my biggest steps has been immersing myself in a supportive community that encourages positive habits. I’ve sought out mentors, friends, and advisors who remind me of my goals and help me stay grounded. I also prioritize my mental and physical health by engaging in healthy activities, such as regular exercise, journaling, and spending time in nature. These habits have become my anchors, helping me to develop a strong sense of self-worth and self-control, which is essential in breaking the cycle of addiction. Additionally, I have made the choice to pursue a career in nursing. This path not only provides a sense of direction for my life but also represents my commitment to helping others who may be struggling. By turning my experiences into something positive, I’m working to transform the pain of my past into compassion and strength that I can share with others. In my future role as a nurse, I plan to provide support and guidance to patients and families affected by addiction, showing them that it is possible to build a better future. Moving forward, I will continue to maintain my commitment to living a clean and sober life. I know that this path is not always easy, but I am determined to stay focused on the goals I’ve set for myself. Through self-awareness, support systems, and a dedication to my education, I am breaking the cycle of addiction and building a life filled with stability, health, and purpose. This journey has taught me that I have the strength to overcome my past, and I am committed to carrying that strength into everything I do.

Education is a transformative force in my life, offering me the opportunity to break free from generational cycles of struggle and hardship. Coming from a background where financial security was often out of reach, I am determined to change this narrative for myself and my family. By pursuing a degree in nursing, I am working toward a stable future one that breaks the generational curse of financial instability and provides a foundation that my family can build on. My education is not just for me; it’s for those who come after me, ensuring that our story is one of resilience, empowerment, and growth. My path to becoming a nurse is also shaped by my experiences working as a home aide at Saquoyas Independent Living. In this role, I learned the importance of compassion, patience, and understanding. I have spent time caring for elderly individuals, helping them with daily activities, listening to their stories, and offering companionship. This work taught me that caregiving goes far beyond medical tasks; it’s about building relationships and treating each person with dignity and respect. These experiences inspired me to pursue a nursing degree, knowing that the skills I learn will allow me to offer the same compassionate care to others. For me, education is a tool that will allow me to give back to others who may face similar challenges, particularly single mothers who, like my own mother, work tirelessly to provide for their families. Growing up, I saw firsthand the sacrifices my mother made as a single parent. She put her needs aside to make sure my siblings and I had the basics, even when times were hard. She taught me resilience and determination, showing me that no matter the obstacles, it is possible to overcome and achieve more. By furthering my education and entering a stable career, I am honoring her sacrifices and paving the way for a future filled with opportunity. In the future, I hope to give back by not only providing quality healthcare but also offering support to single mothers and their families. I understand the importance of having resources and someone to lean on, especially for women who are navigating parenthood alone. With my degree, I will have the ability to work within communities that need extra support, advocating for families and connecting them with the resources they need to thrive. I want to be a source of encouragement and guidance, someone who helps single mothers feel seen, heard, and supported. Education is changing my life by giving me the chance to build a future free from the limitations of my past. With my nursing degree, I am not only breaking generational curses within my family but also creating a foundation of hope and stability. Higher education represents a way to break the cycle of financial struggle and create a secure future for myself and my family. Through my work, I will be able to give back to the families who need it most, offering both compassionate care and a reminder that they are not alone. My journey is about more than personal success it’s about creating lasting change and using my experiences to uplift others.

My decision to pursue a career in healthcare, specifically nursing, is deeply rooted in my personal experiences and my commitment to creating a positive impact within my community. Growing up, I faced many challenges that highlighted the importance of resilience, empathy, and accessible support systems. These experiences have not only fueled my drive to build a better path for myself but also inspired me to uplift others, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. By becoming a nurse, I aim to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives, inspire young people facing similar challenges, and break the cycle of financial and emotional hardship that I have witnessed within my own family. One of my primary motivations for entering healthcare comes from my personal journey with mental health. After losing my father to suicide, I felt a powerful calling to be there for others during times of crisis and vulnerability. This loss, while incredibly painful, taught me the importance of having someone who can understand, listen, and advocate during difficult times. My experiences with mental health have given me a compassionate perspective, especially toward young Black girls in my community who may be struggling in silence. I want to be more than a caregiver—I want to be a source of strength and understanding, someone who not only provides medical care but also helps young people build confidence and self-worth. My work as a home aide at Saquoya's Independent Living has provided me with hands-on experience in compassionate caregiving. Working with elderly individuals, I have learned how critical it is to offer both medical and emotional support. I understand the value of building trust, respecting individual needs, and providing care that treats each person with dignity. These roles have equipped me with essential skills in communication, empathy, and resource coordination, all of which will serve me well as a nurse. A nursing degree will not only allow me to continue helping others but also provide a pathway to financial stability. Coming from a background where financial challenges were a constant struggle, I am determined to create a secure future through higher education and a rewarding career. Nursing offers me a way to support myself and my family while making a positive impact on others. Achieving this degree is a step toward breaking the cycle of financial hardship and building a stable foundation for the future. In the long term, I envision using my nursing degree to impact communities beyond the traditional healthcare setting. While I am eager to work directly with patients, I am also passionate about mental health advocacy, particularly within underserved communities. My role as a home aide have given me a strong foundation in outreach and support, and I want to extend these efforts into healthcare. By combining my clinical knowledge with my passion for advocacy, I hope to contribute to health initiatives that promote mental and physical wellness, especially for young people who may feel isolated or unsupported. In summary, my journey to becoming a nurse is rooted in a desire to uplift others, be a voice for those who feel unheard, and create a brighter future for myself and my community. As a nurse, I hope to provide compassionate care that goes beyond physical health, touching the lives and hearts of those I serve.

My journey toward developing the skills and purpose to help others be their best began with my own personal challenges and experiences. Losing my father and navigating my own struggles with mental health were pivotal moments that showed me how important it is to have support, empathy, and understanding. These experiences fueled my passion for helping others overcome their struggles and achieve their full potential. I learned that, sometimes, the most meaningful impact comes from simply being there for others, offering a listening ear, and showing compassion. To turn this passion into action, I began working as a home aide at Saquoyas Independent Living, where I provide daily care and companionship for residents. This role has been instrumental in developing my skills in patience, empathy, and active listening, all of which are essential for truly understanding and supporting others. I help residents with their physical needs, but I also offer emotional support, encouraging them to stay hopeful and positive as they work toward recovery. Through this work, I have learned how to create a trusting environment where people feel valued and safe, which I believe is essential for helping others reach their best selves. Beyond my role as a home aide, I have made it my mission to be an advocate for mental health awareness, especially within the African American community. Each day, I get to practice active listening, problem solving and advocacy skills that are essential in helping people overcome obstacles. I understand the stigma that often surrounds mental health issues and how it can prevent individuals from seeking the support they need. By openly sharing my own story and showing that it’s okay to ask for help, I aim to inspire others to be their best by prioritizing their well-being. Ultimately, my vision is to continue developing these skills as I pursue a career in nursing, where I can support individuals holistically caring not only for their physical health but also for their emotional and mental well-being. My personal experiences, combined with professional roles have shown me that everyone deserves a space where they feel seen and heard, and I am committed to creating that space for others and long-lasting positive change. Especially young black girls who may feel overlooked or struggled with similar challenges. I aim to show them what's possible and provide a pathway toward a brighter future. My purpose is to empower others to overcome their challenges and to remind them that, no matter their circumstances, they have the strength to thrive.

    Expression in Medicine Scholarship
Free expression is vital in medicine because it fosters innovation, enhances patient care, and supports ethical decision-making. In a field where every voice—from patients to practitioners—matters, an environment that encourages open communication can lead to breakthroughs, build trust, and ultimately save lives. When medical professionals can speak openly about their observations, concerns, and ideas, they contribute to a culture of continuous learning and improvement, ensuring that healthcare evolves to meet patient needs. Free expression also plays a crucial role in respecting patient autonomy. Patients need the freedom to share their personal stories, preferences, and concerns without fear of judgment, knowing their voices will be valued in treatment decisions. This open dialogue between providers and patients is essential to patient-centered care and can lead to better, more personalized health outcomes. However, free expression in medicine must be balanced with respect, professionalism, and a commitment to evidence-based practices. Medical professionals can protect and bolster free expression by creating safe spaces for open dialogue in clinical and academic settings. Supporting policies that protect whistleblowers and encourage constructive feedback within healthcare organizations can ensure that all voices are heard without risk of retribution. To strengthen free expression further, healthcare providers must advocate for transparency and inclusivity, welcoming diverse perspectives that can enhance medical understanding and address disparities in care. By valuing diverse viewpoints and fostering honest communication, individuals within the medical field can ensure that free expression remains a guiding principle in delivering high-quality, ethical healthcare.
