I have chosen to pursue a career in healthcare because I believe it is one of the most direct and meaningful ways to positively impact people's lives. I've always been fascinated by the human body and how it functions, which naturally drew me to the field of medicine. My goal is to become a healthcare professional who not only treats patients but also empowers them through education and preventive care. I'm especially passionate about working with young people, as I believe that instilling healthy habits early on can lead to lifelong positive outcomes. In the future, I envision myself in a role that combines clinical practice with community outreach. Whether through direct patient care or public health initiatives, I want to contribute to building a healthier and more informed society. I am committed to lifelong learning and staying current with the latest advancements in healthcare to provide the highest quality care possible. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how healthcare professionals can change lives, and this inspired me to follow in their footsteps. As a third-generation immigrant, I have learned from my grandmother, or “Nana”, who is one of my greatest role models. After immigrating to the United States from Cuba at 18 years old, my nana pursued a university education and eventually began working as a staff nurse in Labor and Delivery at Highland Hospital. While at Highland, she restructured the “8th floor” (Labor & Delivery Unit), to better serve the women who came to receive medical care there. She was eventually promoted to nurse manager in the department and later took on multiple clinic manager positions, including one at Eastmont Wellness, where she worked before retiring. Throughout her 33 years of dedication and hard work, she touched thousands of lives and served the community in countless ways, and her impact has inspired me to make a difference in my community as well. I would also like to be an agent of change and support in my community, helping, educating, and inspiring others to live a life of excellence. As a Black woman, I am deeply aware of the disparities that exist in healthcare and have witnessed firsthand how they impact my community. These experiences have fueled my determination to be part of the solution. I want to use my education to help make high-quality healthcare more accessible to underrepresented groups. By pursuing a career in medicine, I hope to bring a diverse perspective that can help bridge systemic gaps and create a more inclusive environment for all patients. As a person of color, I bring a unique ability to empathize and connect with patients from similar backgrounds in ways that others may not. This personal insight motivates me to advocate for care that truly meets the needs of all people. This fall, I will begin studying Human Developmental Sciences at UC San Diego, where I aim to explore both the biological and socio-cultural factors that shape health outcomes in different communities. I am especially interested in the lack of medical research focused on the genetic disorders and environmental factors that disproportionately affect the Black community. I hope to contribute to advancing research and improving care for communities of color. In conclusion, my choice to pursue a healthcare career is driven by my desire to make a difference in the world. I am excited about the opportunity to learn and grow in this field, to use my skills to help others, and to be a positive force for change that inspires the next generation of healthcare professionals.

“Am I going to see my 17th birthday?” I couldn’t bring myself to ask the question outright, but words like “tumor” and “potentially breast cancer” floating around in my doctor's office made it impossible to ignore. How else was a 16-year-old, already navigating so much change, supposed to react when suddenly faced with the reality of needing a biopsy surgery and possibly having cancer? Naturally, I was absolutely terrified. My thoughts raced constantly, and every quiet moment became an echo chamber of “what ifs.” I felt powerless, as though my body had betrayed me and my future had been pulled out from under me. However, throughout my journey, I was surrounded by an incredible team of medical professionals who reassured me at every step. They were patient, answered my questions with care, and went above and beyond to ease my fears, their kindness carrying me through the uncertainty. In a time when I felt most alone, they became my lifeline, offering not just treatment but humanity, comfort, and hope. Thankfully, my results revealed that I was cancer-free. This experience shifted my perspective on my passion for science and made me consider a future in medicine, not just as a career, but as a calling. I want to be a compassionate advocate and caretaker for those facing the same terrifying uncertainty I once did, ensuring they feel the same support that meant the whole world to me. I’ve come to realize that medicine isn’t just about diagnosing and treating illness. It’s about human connection, trust, and the ability to bring comfort in fear. The doctors and nurses who walked beside me didn’t just save me from a physical threat; they gave me peace of mind, restored my hope, and inspired my future. In the future, I envision myself in a role that combines clinical practice with community outreach. I am committed to lifelong learning and staying current with the latest advancements in healthcare to provide the highest quality care possible. My goal is to become the kind of medical professional who not only helps heal the body but also uplifts the spirit. I know that this path, shaped by my own fears and the people who helped me overcome them, is one I’m deeply committed to walking. Their example taught me that even the smallest acts of compassion, whether it's taking the time to explain a procedure, offering a reassuring smile, or simply listening, can transform someone’s experience entirely. I want to carry those lessons forward, combining scientific knowledge with empathy to care for patients not just as cases, but as people.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
19th-century novelist James Lane Allen once said, “Crisis doesn’t create character; it reveals it.” This resonates deeply with my experience of overcoming obstacles in high school. The most significant challenge I confronted was anxiety and depression stemming from severe bullying. During my freshman and sophomore years, I was one of the top students in my class, excelling in academics, athletics, and extracurriculars. At the same time, I was a victim of intense bullying, peer targeting, and social isolation. When I turned to the administration for help, I was met with indifference and expected to carry on as if nothing was happening. I became so afraid to go to school that the thought of facing each day left me physically ill, severely depressed, suicidal, and overwhelmed by anxiety. This period of my life left emotional scars, but it also transformed my approach to conflict, problem-solving, and personal growth. Realizing that my situation was unsustainable, I sought help. I began therapy, medicated my anxiety and depression, and committed to a journey of personal healing. I became determined to make myself stronger than the problems that had felt debilitating. I continued to pour myself into schoolwork, sports, and extracurriculars because I knew that, despite feeling as though so much of my power had been taken from me, I was determined not to let it compromise my future. I continued advocating for myself, eventually transferring to a new school for my junior and senior years. At this new school, I found an environment that allowed me to flourish, free from the social barriers that had once held me down and dulled my vibrant, authentic self. Since then, my mental health has greatly improved, and I have become a firm advocate for the importance of mental health resources. This experience has not only made me more resilient and insightful, but it has also inspired me to help others face their own challenges. I now support and guide my friends and family who are struggling with their own mental health challenges. I am proud that this crisis revealed my true character as one of bravery and compassion.
