Legacy is the impact you leave on the people around you after you die. My upbringing was rough by a lot of people's standards. I was raised by my single mother and grew up with a younger brother D. We were homeless for 5 years until Covid 19. My grandmother got the coronavirus and had to be taken care of, so my mom left her job and moved in to care for her. During the pandemic, my mother and grandmother joined multiple pyramid schemes and MLMs. They didn't join out of desperation like most people though. Like many other poor Americans, they've always been vulnerable to get-rich-quick schemes. My mother has never been good with money. For example, she always bought weed when we were homeless. Meanwhile, I had to work just to keep my little brother and me fed when we were out of school. At the same time, she always criticized me for spending my money on food and called it wasteful. What was I supposed to do, not eat on weekends? I still care for my mother because she's a great parent overall, but I want to be better with money than her. Watching her make bad decisions scared me towards finance. I love taxes, spreadsheets, and being frugal. Many people find these things boring, but I am passionate about finance and want to pursue it as a career. The legacy I want to leave is breaking my family's cycle of poverty. I plan to go to college as an accounting major, get my CPA license, and later start my own accounting business. My upbringing would be considered bad by a lot of people, but I think I was lucky. My mother raised me with lots of love and support by going the extra mile to help me achieve my goals. Being bad with money was her fatal flaw, but she's a good parent. I would not have found my passion for finance if it weren't for my upbringing, so I am grateful for her.
