      Students Impacted by Incarceration Scholarship
Incarceration has impacted my life through my father’s experiences with the justice system. One moment that has stayed with me is when I was in elementary school and I remember my family dropping my dad off when he turned himself in. I did not fully understand everything at the time, but I clearly remember the emotions of that day and how it affected my sense of stability and my understanding of family. It was a moment that made me realize that life can change suddenly, and that families can go through difficult situations that are not always talked about openly. Going through that experience taught me a lot about emotional strength and understanding. As I grew older, I began to understand more about why situations like incarceration affect not only the person involved, but also the entire family. I learned that children can carry a lot of emotions such as confusion, sadness, and stress, even if they do not always express it. It also taught me empathy, because I know that people make mistakes, but those mistakes can still have long lasting effects on the people who love them. This experience has also influenced the way I view my education. It made me realize how important stability, support, and opportunity are for building a better future. There were times when things felt emotionally heavy, but I used school as a way to stay focused and move forward. Education became something I could hold on to, something that gave me direction even when life felt uncertain. It taught me that I want to create a different path for myself through hard work and consistency. Because of this experience, my academic and career goals have become very important to me. I want to pursue higher education and build a career in a helping field such as social work or counseling. I want to support individuals and families who are going through difficult situations, especially those affected by incarceration or other life challenges. I understand how important it is to have someone who listens, supports, and helps guide you through hard times, because I have seen how deeply life experiences can affect people. My goal is to use my experiences to help others feel supported instead of alone. I want to be someone who helps people find resources, hope, and direction when they feel stuck. I also want to break cycles of hardship by helping young people and families see that their past does not have to define their future. Overall, incarceration has shaped my life by teaching me resilience, empathy, and motivation. It has influenced my academic focus and strengthened my desire to pursue a career where I can make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Growing up with my mother shaped me into the person I am today. Being raised by a single parent taught me strength, independence, and the value of hard work. My mom worked hard every day to make sure I had what I needed, even when things were not easy. I watched her handle responsibilities on her own, and that showed me what it means to stay strong and keep going even when life gets difficult. Because of her, I learned to appreciate the sacrifices she made and to work hard in school and in life. At the same time, my family situation came with challenges that I had to learn how to process and understand. When my parents separated, there were moments where my father would speak negatively about my mother and share things that I was not ready to hear. As a child, that was confusing and sometimes painful. It put me in a difficult position because I cared about both of my parents, and hearing negative things about one of them created emotional stress. Over time, I learned that I could not control what was being said around me, but I could control how I responded to it. Instead of letting those experiences make me bitter, I chose to focus on my own growth and understanding. I learned how to process my emotions in a healthier way and not let outside negativity define how I see myself or my family. Those experiences taught me the importance of setting boundaries and protecting my peace. They also helped me develop a stronger sense of empathy, because I realized that people sometimes act out of their own pain or struggles. My mother remained a strong and steady influence in my life throughout everything. She showed me love, patience, and resilience, even when things were hard. Her ability to stay focused and provide for our family helped me understand the importance of perseverance. Because of her, I learned that you do not have to be perfect to be strong, and that strength can look like showing up every day and doing your best despite challenges. Growing up in this environment also shaped how I treat others. I have learned to be more understanding and less quick to judge, because I know that everyone has their own story. I try to be respectful and supportive in my relationships, and I make an effort to communicate in a healthy and positive way. These experiences have also influenced my goals, as I want to create a future where I can help others who may be going through similar situations. Overall, growing up with a single mother and navigating family challenges taught me resilience, maturity, and emotional strength. It was not always easy, but it helped shape me into someone who is determined, compassionate, and focused on creating a better future for myself and others.

My passion for social work comes from my desire to help people who feel unheard and unsupported. I have seen how much it can mean for someone to have even one person who truly listens and cares. Growing up, I learned that life can be difficult, and not everyone has the same level of support or resources. These experiences shaped how I view the world and made me want to be someone who can step in and make a difference. I want to be a source of support for individuals and families who are going through hard times and help them find the help they need to improve their lives. My career goal is to become a social worker who focuses on helping underserved communities. I want to work with people from different backgrounds and understand their unique experiences. I plan to continue my education so that I can build the skills and knowledge needed to be effective in this field. I want to learn how to connect people with resources, support mental health, and help families overcome challenges. I also want to gain hands on experience through internships or volunteer work so that I can better understand the real needs of the people I will serve. I know that social work is not always easy, but I am ready to put in the effort because I believe in the impact this career can have. I hope to embody Carmen Jimenez Pride’s legacy by practicing cultural humility in everything I do. This means always being open to learning from others, respecting different cultures, and understanding that every person has their own story. I want to make sure that I never assume I know what someone is going through and instead take the time to listen and learn from them. Cultural humility also means being aware of my own biases and continuously working to grow as a person so I can better serve others. I want to approach every situation with respect, kindness, and a willingness to understand. In addition to cultural humility, I want to be an advocate for those who do not always have a voice. I want to stand up for people who may feel ignored or overlooked and make sure they have access to the resources and support they need. Advocacy is about more than speaking up. It is about taking action and helping create real change. I hope to use my voice and my position as a social worker to help improve systems and make them more fair for everyone. Through my future career, I want to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of others. I want to help people feel seen, heard, and supported. I want to help families build stronger futures and give individuals the confidence to believe in themselves. By following the example of Carmen Jimenez Pride, I hope to dedicate my life to service, empathy, and advocacy. I want to use my education and my experiences to make a difference in my community and to help create a better future for others.

One of the most significant losses I have experienced in my life was the passing of my aunt in 2017. I was only seven years old when she died, and the sadness I felt has stayed with me ever since. Even now, years later, I still think about her and remember the little moments we shared. She was kind, loving, and always made me feel special. Losing her at such a young age made me realize how important it is to value the people you love and to make the most of the time you have with them. Her loss has shaped who I am today in many ways. It taught me the importance of empathy, patience, and expressing love to those around me. I try to live my life in a way that honors her memory by being kind to others, appreciating my family, and showing gratitude for the small things in life. On my first last day of high school, I dressed in her school colors from Kalamazoo Central and posted a tribute online with the caption “doing it for Deza.” I wanted her to know that even though she is gone, she still inspires me every day to do my best and to make her proud. That moment was emotional for me because it felt like I was carrying her with me into a new chapter of my life. The loss of my aunt has also influenced my goals and the way I approach challenges. I have learned that life can be fragile and unpredictable, and this has motivated me to pursue my education with focus and determination. I want to build a future where I can make a positive impact on others, just as my aunt positively impacted me. Her memory reminds me to use my talents and opportunities to help people, especially those who might be struggling or facing hardships, because even small gestures of care and support can matter so much. Living with this loss has also shaped my outlook on life. I try to approach challenges with resilience, knowing that even in difficult times, love and memories give strength. My aunt’s influence inspires me to be compassionate, thoughtful, and driven. I carry her memory in everything I do, and it reminds me to cherish the people in my life and to work hard toward my dreams. Ultimately, losing my aunt has taught me lessons about love, resilience, and purpose. Her presence in my life, though no longer physical, continues to guide me and shapes the person I am becoming. I hope to honor her memory by living a life filled with kindness, determination, and care for others.

During high school, one teacher had a deep impact on my life and the way I see myself and my future. Sometimes I think about the movie Matilda and the character Ms. Honey, the teacher who truly saw Matilda when others did not. In many ways, my teacher, Mrs. VanString, reminded me of that. During a time when life outside of school felt overwhelming, she became someone who made me feel understood and supported. Balancing school while working two jobs and helping my family financially was exhausting, and there were many days when I came to school feeling drained and discouraged. Instead of only seeing a tired student, Mrs. VanString saw someone who was trying their best. That simple act of noticing my effort meant more than she probably realized. There were moments when I doubted whether I was capable of reaching my goals. I often felt like I was moving through life too quickly, carrying responsibilities that many students around me did not have. When I felt like I was falling behind or not doing enough, Mrs. VanString reminded me that resilience does not always look perfect. She encouraged me to keep going and reminded me that the effort I was putting in mattered. Her kindness and patience helped me believe that my circumstances did not define my future. Just like Ms. Honey helped Matilda see her own potential, Mrs. VanString helped me see that I was stronger and more capable than I thought. What made her influence so powerful was that she did not just focus on academics. She cared about who her students were as people. She took time to listen, to check in, and to remind me that my voice and experiences mattered. Because of her, I began to understand that teachers and mentors can truly change the direction of someone’s life simply by believing in them. Her support helped me regain confidence during moments when I felt overwhelmed and unsure of myself. The lessons Mrs. VanString taught me have stayed with me beyond the classroom. She showed me the power of compassion and the impact that one supportive person can have on someone who is struggling. Because of her influence, I now want to pursue a career where I can be that kind of support for others. I plan to study social work so I can help people who are facing difficult situations feel seen, heard, and supported. Just as she helped guide me during a challenging time in my life, I hope to guide others toward hope and stability in their own lives. Her belief in me changed the way I approach challenges, and it continues to inspire the person I want to become.

My story is one of struggle, growth, and hope. I grew up facing challenges that often felt too big for me, from financial struggles at home to times when I struggled with my mental health and self-worth. There were days I felt alone and unsure of what my future would hold, but my faith has always been a guiding light in my life. It has taught me that even in the hardest moments, I am not alone, and that every struggle can be turned into an opportunity to learn, grow, and help others. My faith has shaped my values by teaching me the importance of compassion, service, and perseverance. It has influenced the choices I make, from how I treat others to the goals I set for myself. I want to pursue higher education and a career in social work because I feel called to help people who face emotional, financial, or social challenges, just as I have. I want to pour into others in the same way I have been lifted by my faith and the support of those around me. My vision for the future is rooted in service and empowerment. I hope to work in my community and beyond, providing guidance, support, and understanding to people who feel unseen or overwhelmed. I want to create safe spaces where people feel valued, heard, and encouraged to grow, and I know my faith will continue to guide me in doing that with patience and love. Earning a college degree would be life-changing not only for me but also for future generations of my family. Growing up in a single-parent household, I saw how hard my mother worked to keep our family stable, and I understand the sacrifices she made to provide for me. Attending college would give me the opportunity to break cycles of financial struggle and build a stronger foundation for myself and my family. It would show my younger relatives that education is attainable no matter the challenges and that with determination and hard work, they too can pursue their goals. A college degree would give me more than knowledge; it would give me the ability to create long-term stability, open doors to meaningful careers, and inspire others in my family to believe in their potential. Personally, a college degree would mean independence, growth, and the chance to fully pursue my dreams. Throughout high school, I balanced schoolwork with two jobs in order to help support my family financially. While this taught me responsibility and perseverance, it also made me realize how important it is to have the resources and opportunities to focus on my future. College would allow me to focus on learning, gaining skills, and preparing for a career where I can make a meaningful impact. It would also give me the chance to grow as a person, explore my interests, and build connections that will support my personal and professional growth. I am passionate about helping people who face challenges in their lives, especially those who are underserved or dealing with emotional and financial struggles. This passion has guided me toward a career in social work. I have pursued this interest through volunteering and community service, including helping organize care packages for foster families and rescue animals, and supporting peers and neighbors who needed guidance or encouragement. Through these experiences, I have learned the importance of empathy, active listening, and consistent support. They have also shown me that even small acts of service can have a lasting effect on someone’s life. My passion for helping others has motivated me to take initiative and commit to making a difference wherever I can, both now and in the future. A college degree would provide the tools, knowledge, and credentials I need to turn my passion into a career that allows me to uplift others. I want to work with individuals and families who feel stuck or unsupported, helping them access the resources and guidance they need to build better lives. I also want to serve as a role model for future generations of my family, showing them that hard work, resilience, and education can open doors to opportunity and stability. By earning a degree, I hope to not only change my own path but also create a ripple effect that strengthens my family and the communities I will serve for years to come.

Growing up, I became aware at a young age of how different people’s lives can be depending on the resources and support they have. My family faced financial challenges, and there were times when we were living paycheck to paycheck. Because of this, I understood what it felt like to worry about basic needs and stability. Those experiences shaped the way I see the world and helped me recognize how many people in our communities are underserved or overlooked. Instead of letting those experiences discourage me, they motivated me to find ways to support others who may be going through similar struggles. One way I tried to help was by taking initiative in volunteer efforts that supported people and animals in need within my community. One project I helped with involved preparing care packages for rescue dogs and the families who were fostering them. Many of these foster families were volunteers who gave their time and resources to care for animals that had been abandoned or neglected. I worked with others to organize supplies, prepare packages, and make sure these families had the materials they needed to continue caring for the animals. While the project focused on helping animals, it also supported the people in our community who were dedicating their time and energy to providing care and shelter. Through this experience, I realized that innovative service does not always have to mean creating something completely new. Sometimes it means recognizing a need that is not being fully met and stepping up to help in meaningful ways. I also learned how important teamwork and communication are when working toward a common goal. Helping organize these efforts required planning, cooperation, and a shared commitment to making a difference. Seeing the positive impact that these small actions had on both the animals and the foster families showed me how powerful community support can be. These experiences strengthened my desire to continue working with underserved populations in the future. I plan to pursue a career in social work because I want to help individuals and families who may feel overwhelmed by their circumstances. Many people face barriers such as financial hardship, lack of access to resources, or difficult family situations. I want to be someone who helps connect people with the support they need and encourages them to believe that change is possible. My goal is to create spaces where people feel heard, supported, and valued. The volunteer experiences I have had so far have shown me that meaningful change often starts with small actions and genuine care for others. By continuing to take initiative and advocate for those who may not always have a voice, I hope to contribute to stronger communities where everyone has the opportunity to feel supported and succeed.

I am a high school student who has learned a lot about responsibility, perseverance, and compassion through the challenges I have faced while growing up. I was raised in a single-parent household, and from a young age, I saw how hard my mother worked to keep our family stable. During my junior year of high school, I began working two jobs while balancing school so that I could help support my family financially. While many of my classmates were able to focus only on school or enjoy their free time, I often spent my days going from work to homework and waking up early to do it all again. It was exhausting at times, but those experiences taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of pushing forward even when things feel difficult. One of the biggest adversities I have faced has been balancing financial struggles at home while trying to stay focused on my education and future. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed by the pressure of helping my family while also trying to succeed in school. Some nights I was so tired from work that it felt almost impossible to finish assignments or study for tests. Despite those challenges, I refused to give up on my goals. I stayed committed to my education, reminded myself why I was working so hard, and continued to push forward even when it felt like too much. Over time, I learned how to manage my time better, stay organized, and keep a positive mindset even when circumstances were not easy. These experiences helped me grow stronger and more determined to create a better future. The struggles I have faced have also shaped my future career path. I plan to pursue a career in social work because I have seen how difficult life can be for families who are facing financial or emotional challenges. When people are dealing with those situations, they often feel alone or unsure where to turn for help. I want to be someone who provides guidance, support, and understanding during those moments. My goal is to work with individuals and families who are going through difficult times and help connect them to resources that can improve their lives. I want to create spaces where people feel heard, supported, and encouraged to keep moving forward. In the future, I hope to make a positive impact by helping people overcome obstacles and build more stable lives. I want to advocate for individuals who may not always have a voice and help them access opportunities that can lead to a better future. My experiences have taught me that adversity can shape a person in powerful ways, and I want to use the lessons I have learned to help others who may be facing similar struggles. By combining my personal experiences with my education, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others and contribute to stronger, more supportive communities.

Resilience has become a big part of who I am, not just for myself but for my younger sister. Growing up, my family went through many changes that were hard to understand at the time. When we were younger, my father was someone we looked up to and admired. Over time, things changed, and the stability we once felt began to disappear. My sister ended up living with my father while I took a different path, and she also had to grow up without the presence of her mother after custody was taken away. Watching her go through those experiences has been painful because I know she has faced challenges that many people our age should never have to carry. Because of that, I have tried to be someone she can look up to and rely on. Even when my own life has felt overwhelming with school, work, and helping my family financially, I have tried to show her that difficult circumstances do not have to determine our future. I demonstrate resilience for my sister by continuing to move forward and reminding her that she can do the same. I talk to her about staying focused in school, believing in herself, and understanding that our situations do not define our worth. I want her to see that even when life feels unfair or unstable, there is still a path toward something better. I try to be someone she can talk to when she feels alone, someone who listens without judgment and encourages her to keep going. Knowing that she is watching me has made me stronger and more determined to succeed, not just for myself but for her as well. I hope that by showing her perseverance, responsibility, and compassion, she will believe that she can overcome the challenges in her own life. Supporting my sister has taught me that resilience is not only about surviving hard moments but also about lifting others while you are still finding your own way. Those experiences have shaped my goals and strengthened my desire to pursue a future where I can help other young people who are facing difficult family situations feel supported and hopeful about their future. More than anything, I want my sister to understand that the circumstances we grow up in do not have to decide the people we become. I remind her that she is stronger than the situation she is in and that her future can still be full of opportunity. Being someone she can look up to has pushed me to keep going even when things feel difficult. It has taught me that resilience is not just about surviving hard moments, but about becoming a source of strength for others who may still be finding their way.

I am a high school student who has learned a lot about responsibility, perseverance, and compassion through my experiences both in and outside of school. During my junior year, I worked two jobs while balancing school in order to help support my single mother. While many of my classmates were spending their time visiting colleges or relaxing during breaks, I was waking up early for shifts and staying up late finishing homework after work. Those long days were exhausting, but they taught me discipline and showed me how strong I could be when my family needed me. School has always been important to me, even when life outside the classroom felt overwhelming. I stayed focused on finishing assignments, building my future, and continuing to grow as a student. Outside of academics and work, I have also tried to stay involved in my community through volunteering and supporting people around me. I enjoy helping others, listening when people need support, and being someone others can rely on. These experiences have helped shape my interest in social work and community support. After high school, I plan to attend college and pursue a degree in social work. My goal is to better understand the systems that affect families facing financial struggles and limited resources. Growing up, I saw how hard my mother worked to keep our household stable, and I experienced the pressure that comes when families are forced to move quickly just to stay afloat. Those experiences inspired me to want to help others who may be facing similar challenges. I hope to work with communities that are often overlooked and help provide support, resources, and opportunities for people who feel stuck or overwhelmed by their circumstances. Education will allow me to gain the knowledge and skills needed to turn my personal experiences into meaningful work that helps others build more stable futures. If I could start my own charity, my mission would be to support young people and families who are struggling financially while also dealing with emotional stress. I would want the organization to focus on students who feel pressure to grow up too quickly because of their circumstances. The charity would provide resources such as school supplies, food support, and access to mental health services, so students can focus on their education without carrying the entire weight of their household. Volunteers could mentor younger students, tutor, organize community food drives, and create workshops that teach life skills such as budgeting and college planning. My goal would be to build a community where people feel supported rather than alone. I know from my own experiences that sometimes a little support can make a huge difference in someone’s life. By creating spaces where people feel understood and encouraged, I hope to help others find the same strength and stability that I worked hard to build for myself and my family.

One of the hardest challenges I have faced in my life has been dealing with my mental health while also experiencing financial struggles at home. Growing up, there were times when I felt very sad, anxious, and unsure of myself. I often did not know how to handle all the pressure I felt. On top of that, my family did not always have enough money to cover basic needs, which made me worry even more about the future. Some nights I would cry alone because it felt like everything was too heavy and I did not know how to make it better. These struggles made it hard to focus on school, have confidence in myself, and see a clear path forward. For a while, I felt trapped in a cycle of worry and sadness, and it was easy to feel alone and hopeless. Even though it was hard, I started taking steps to improve my life and take control of my future. I began talking to teachers, family, and mentors who I trusted and learned to share my feelings instead of keeping them inside. I started doing small things each day to take care of myself like writing in a journal, setting small goals, and practicing gratitude. I also looked for ways to help other people, volunteering in my community and supporting friends who were struggling. These actions taught me to be strong, patient, and kind to myself and to others. Over time, I noticed that I was more confident and better at handling challenges. I learned that struggles do not define a person, but the choices we make to keep moving forward do. This experience has changed me by making me more determined, empathetic, and ready to support others who face hard times. I plan to use what I have learned to reach my future goals, including going to college and working in social work or community service. I want to create safe spaces where people feel heard, cared for, and encouraged to keep going even when life is hard. Overcoming this challenge has taught me that even small steps toward improvement matter and that showing kindness, asking for help, and taking action can lead to growth. I want to continue using these lessons to make a positive difference in the lives of others and help build stronger, more supportive communities. These experiences have also shown me the value of hope and persistence. I know that life will have challenges, but I have learned that facing them and taking action makes a person stronger. I want to continue growing, learning, and using what I have overcome to help others. My goal is to make a difference in my community and inspire people to keep moving forward even when things feel impossible.
      Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
Growing up, finances have always played a big role in my life, often in ways that felt stressful or overwhelming. My family faced financial struggles that made it hard to cover even basic needs at times, and I remember feeling anxious about how we would make it through each week. These challenges affected more than just money because they influenced my confidence and my sense of security and made me feel like the future was uncertain. Because of this, I realized early on how important it is to understand money, budgeting, and planning for the future. For a long time, I did not have much guidance on financial education, and I had to learn by observing my family work hard, sacrifice, and problem-solve under pressure. There were moments when I wanted to contribute or help, but I did not know how because I lacked the knowledge and tools to manage finances effectively. These experiences taught me that financial education is not just about numbers. It is about creating stability, independence, and opportunities for yourself and the people around you. They also taught me patience, responsibility, and the value of persistence. These lessons go far beyond money and influence how I approach challenges in all areas of life. Because of these experiences, I am determined to learn as much as I can about managing finances so I can build a stable future and help others avoid some of the struggles I have seen. I plan to use what I learn about budgeting, saving, and investing to make thoughtful decisions during college and beyond, making sure I can focus on my education and personal growth without constant financial stress. I also hope to share financial knowledge with my community, helping peers understand money management and showing them how small steps can make a big difference. Learning how to handle finances responsibly will allow me to pursue my career goals, including helping others through social work, while also becoming financially independent and prepared for unexpected challenges. I want to use financial education not just for myself but as a tool to empower others, turning lessons I have learned from my own experiences into meaningful action. By combining careful planning, hard work, and the knowledge I gain, I hope to create stability and opportunity for myself, support my family, and contribute to my community in ways that extend far beyond my own life. These experiences have shown me that financial literacy is more than money management. It is a way to build resilience, confidence, and a foundation for the future I am working hard to create.
Rev. Ethel K. Grinkley Memorial Scholarship
I am someone who has grown through challenges and learned how powerful love, faith, and community can be in shaping a person’s life. There were times when I struggled with my mental health, confidence, and financial stress at home, and those moments often made me feel overwhelmed and unsure of my future. During those difficult times, my faith became a source of comfort and strength. It reminded me that even when life feels heavy, there is still purpose in the struggles we face and there is still hope for something better ahead. My faith has taught me the importance of showing love to others, being patient with people who are hurting, and serving my community with kindness and compassion. Because of what I have gone through, I have learned to pay closer attention to the people around me. Many people carry struggles that others cannot see, and sometimes a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s day. I try to live by the principle of love by checking in on friends who may be having a hard time, listening without judgment, and reminding others that they are not alone. I also believe community service is an important way to show love in action. One of the ways I have given back is by volunteering in my community, including helping prepare care packages for rescue dogs and the families fostering them. At first, it seemed like a small act, but it reminded me that service is not always about doing something huge. Sometimes it is about giving your time, effort, and heart to help others feel supported. These experiences have helped shape the person I want to become. In the future, I hope to continue making a positive impact by pursuing a career in social work, where I can support individuals and families who are facing emotional, financial, or personal struggles. I want to help create safe spaces where people feel heard, valued, and encouraged to keep going even when life feels difficult. My faith continues to guide me toward a life of service, reminding me that love is one of the most powerful ways we can change the world. I believe that when we lead with compassion, support our communities, and care for one another, we create stronger and more hopeful futures for everyone. As I continue my education and personal growth, I hope to carry these values with me and use them to uplift others, serve my community, and make a lasting difference in the lives of the people I encounter.

The experiences I have had through volunteering, the challenges I have faced, and the people who have guided me have shaped who I am today. For a long time, life felt overwhelming as I dealt with struggles with my mental health, confidence, and financial stress at home. There were moments when I felt unsure of my future and questioned whether I would be able to overcome the obstacles in front of me. During those times, the mentors and supportive people in my life made a lasting impact on me. Teachers, family members, and other role models reminded me that my struggles did not define me and that I still could build a meaningful future. Their encouragement helped me keep going even when things felt difficult, and they showed me how powerful it can be when someone simply believes in you. Because of those experiences, I have learned the importance of empathy and kindness. I understand that many people carry struggles that others cannot see, and that has made me more aware of the need to support those around me. I have tried to give back to my community through volunteering, including helping at a local dog treat shop where we prepared care packages for rescue dogs and the families fostering them. At first, it seemed like a small task, but it taught me that even simple acts of service can bring comfort and joy to others. Seeing the impact that small moments of kindness can have showed me that helping others does not always require something big. Sometimes it just takes time, effort, and the willingness to care. These experiences have helped me grow into someone who wants to make a difference in the lives of others. Looking ahead, I hope to continue growing both personally and professionally as I pursue a career in social work. I want to support individuals and families who are facing emotional, financial, or personal challenges and help create spaces where people feel safe, heard, and valued. I want to be the kind of person who reminds others that their struggles do not define them, just like my mentors once reminded me. My life so far has taught me that growth often comes from the hardest moments, and those experiences have given me a deeper sense of purpose. As I move forward, I hope to continue learning, serving my community, and using my experiences to uplift others who may be going through struggles of their own.

Black history has always been a source of strength and inspiration for me. Learning about the struggles, resilience, and achievements of Black people throughout history has shown me what is possible even in the face of challenges. Growing up, I faced moments of self-doubt and uncertainty while also dealing with financial struggles at home and my own mental health challenges. Black history reminded me that resilience is in my roots. Figures like Harriet Tubman, who risked everything to free others, and Madam C.J. Walker, who built an empire despite barriers, taught me that determination and courage can change lives. Seeing people like Maya Angelou use their voices to inspire and educate showed me the power of storytelling and perseverance. Black history supported me personally during times when I felt alone, depressed, or unsure of my future. Studying the Civil Rights Movement and the bravery of the Little Rock Nine inspired me to be bold in my own life and to keep going even when circumstances feel unfair or overwhelming. My appreciation of Black history has shaped my goals and ambitions as a student. I want to attend college not just to further my education but to continue building on the legacy of resilience and empowerment that Black history represents. I hope to use my education to help others through social work or community advocacy, supporting those who face emotional, financial, or social challenges. I also want to share Black history with others to inspire them and show that change is possible. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus on my studies and personal growth without the constant stress of financial strain. It would allow me to invest fully in my education, my community, and my future career and serve as a reminder that my hard work and commitment to my dreams are recognized and valued. Black history is more than dates or events; it is a living legacy that continues to shape who I am and who I aspire to be. It has given me pride, purpose, and responsibility to honor those who came before me, to persevere through challenges, and to create a path for future generations. As I look toward college and beyond, I carry these lessons with me, determined to use my education, voice, and actions to empower myself and others and to continue the tradition of resilience, courage, and progress that Black History continues to be. This scholarship would help me cover the costs of tuition, books, and other college expenses that my family cannot fully support. It would allow me to focus on my studies and my goals without the constant stress of financial strain. With this support, I could participate more fully in school activities, community programs, and opportunities that will help me grow both academically and personally. Receiving this scholarship would give me the chance to invest fully in my education and in the work I hope to do to help my community in the future. Hodge Legacy Community Service Scholarship
Community service has always been a way for me to turn my own struggles into something positive for others. There was a time when I felt like I had nothing to give. I was struggling with my mental health, dealing with depression, and feeling lost. On top of that, my family was going through financial struggles, and I often worried about money in ways that made everything heavier. I remember nights when I cried alone because I didnt know how we would make it through the next week, and I felt like I couldn't help anyone else when I couldnt even help myself. It was hard to see past my own sadness and the weight of financial pressure, and some days felt like life was just too much. Slowly, I started to find ways to take care of myself, starting by talking to someone I trusted. That turned into writing down my feelings and reminding myself that my life had value. Those steps didnt erase my struggles, but they helped me feel a little stronger and start believing that I could make a difference in the world. Once I felt stronger, I wanted to help others in ways that mattered. I started volunteering in my community, even though I didnt have a lot of money or resources to give. I realized that time, attention, and kindness are just as valuable as money. I remember helping at a local dog treat shop, where we made care packages for rescue dogs and their foster families, and I absolutely loved it. At first, it seemed small, but I saw how much joy it brought to people and even to myself. It showed me that giving doesn't have to cost anything, and it's about showing up, listening, and caring. Community service has taught me that everyone has something to give, even when life feels hard. It has shown me that pain can be turned into empathy and that helping others can help you heal, too. I've learned to notice when someone might need a smile, a kind word, or a safe space. Each small act, whether volunteering, checking in on a neighbor, or just listening to someone, matters more than I realized. I believe it is important to give back because none of us can make it through life alone. I know what it feels like to feel overwhelmed, lonely, and have financial struggles, and I want to be someone who reminds others that they are not invisible, that someone is rooting for them. I want to keep bringing kindness into the world and use my own experiences to lift others. Community service has helped me find purpose and hope, and it has shown me that even when life feels heavy, you can turn your challenges into something meaningful, not just for yourself, but for everyone.

There was a time in my life when I felt completely helpless and overwhelmed by my own thoughts and emotions. I struggled with depression and felt trapped in this nonstop cycle of self-doubt and negative body image, crying alone when no one was around to see how much I was hurting. Every mirror seemed to reflect everything I believed was wrong with me, and I carried the weight of constant comparison and fear that I would never be enough. It was exhausting and isolating, and for a long time, I didnt know how to escape the sadness that seemed to follow me everywhere. Slowly, I began to take small steps toward healing, learning how to take care of my mental health in manageable ways. I started talking openly with my older brother about my feelings, seeking guidance and support rather than bottling everything up. I learned to challenge those negative thoughts, focus on the good, and practice self-compassion. Over time, those steps built a foundation for resilience and self-acceptance that changed the way I saw myself and my place in the world. As I became stronger, I realized that the empathy I had gained from my own struggle could be used to help others who were experiencing similar pain. I started noticing my friends and peers who seemed lonely or insecure, and I made it a priority to check in on them and create a space where they could feel seen and valued. I learned that sometimes the simplest acts, like listening without judgment, saying something kind, or just being present, can make a person feel less alone in their struggles. That experience led me to pour my energy into improving mental health, not just in my own life but in the lives of others. Looking toward the future, I hope to bring this passion into my career in social work, where I can use my understanding of emotional struggles to advocate for support and guide families and individuals who are in difficult situations. I want to be someone who helps people find hope when they feel hopeless, reminds them of their worth, and encourages them to grow stronger from their struggles. My own journey has shown me that healing and helping can go hand in hand, and I am committed to creating a world where mental health is put first and everyone feels entitled to get the care and compassion that they deserve.

"Kindness in Action"- One moment of kindness that has always stayed with me happened during a time when someone close to me was going through a really difficult period in their life. She was struggling with things that most people around her didn't notice. She was quiet, distant, and clearly hurting, but she was trying to keep everything to herself. Instead of assuming she wanted to be left alone, I decided to simply be there for her. I started checking in more often, asking how she was doing, and reminding her that she wasn't alone, without making it obvious. Sometimes kindness wasnt a big gesture. It was sitting with her when she cried all night, without me even knowing the reason why. It was staying up on the phone with her, so she wasn't alone all night. It was me bringing food to her house and sitting to eat with her just to make sure she was eating every day. I always stayed and listened without judgment, or sending a message to remind her that she matters, and I care for her. There were days when she didnt feel strong enough to talk to anyone else, but eventually, when she was ready, she trusted me enough to open up. That moment was important because it taught me how powerful small acts of compassion can be. You never truly know what someone else is carrying. Being patient, aware, and supportive can make someone feel so seen that it changes everything for them. It also changed me. I realized that kindness is not just about helping people when it is easy, but about standing beside them when they feel most alone. That experience helped shape the person I am today. It showed me that empathy and support can create real change in someone's life, even in quiet ways. "Creating Connection"- Creating connection has always been important to me because I believe everyone deserves to feel like they belong somewhere. One of the ways I have tried to do this is by making sure people around me feel included, especially those who may feel overlooked or out of place, because I know exactly how that feels. In school and in everyday life, it is easy for people to fall into groups and routines, leaving others feeling more isolated. I have always tried to be the kind of person who notices when someone is sitting alone, feeling nervous, or unsure about where they fit in. Sometimes connection starts with something simple, like starting a conversation, inviting someone to join a group, or just making them feel welcome. I remember times when I would go out of my way to include people who seemed shy or new. What started as a small gesture often turned into genuine friendships. Seeing someone slowly open up, laugh more, and feel more comfortable around others is meaningful in ways that others might not understand. Moments like those remind me that belonging is something we can help create for one another. When people feel accepted and valued, they are more confident and more willing to share who they truly are. For me, creating a connection is not about doing something super big or dramatic. It is about consistently choosing kindness, openness, and empathy. By bringing people together and making space for everyone, I hope to continue building communities where no one feels invisible.
