The figure who has inspired my educational and personal journey is my grandmother. During periods when my parents were absent, she cared for me, supported me, and provided stability. Her presence shaped my values, teaching me the importance of responsibility, perseverance, and compassion. Seeing her struggle now has deeply influenced who I am becoming, both as a student and as a future professional. Her strength in the face of adversity continues to inspire me to overcome challenges with determination and grace, and it motivates me to approach my own challenges with patience and faith.
My grandmother lives in Jamaica and is currently sick, yet the healthcare system there has not given her the care she deserves. It has been painful to watch someone who gave so much of herself receive limited support. What affected me most was seeing that she was not fully heard or prioritized as a patient. This experience opened my eyes to the realities of healthcare inequities and how vulnerable individuals, especially those without strong advocates, can be overlooked. It made me realize that healthcare is not only about treatment but also about advocacy, communication, and compassion. I reflected on how small acts of listening, persistence, and advocacy can make a significant difference in someone’s care, and I want to bring that same attention and care to every patient I serve.
Because of her, healthcare is no longer just an academic interest—it is deeply personal. I want to pursue a career in healthcare so that no patient feels ignored, confused, or powerless. I plan to begin as a registered nurse, gain hands-on experience, and continue my education to become a nurse practitioner or physician. My ultimate goal is to provide compassionate, patient-centered care while addressing disparities that affect underserved populations. I want to be a professional who listens to patients, advocates for their needs, and ensures that they feel respected and supported throughout their healthcare journey. Her example taught me that dedication and care can empower others, and I carry that lesson into every part of my life.
My experiences in debate, leadership, and service have helped me develop communication, empathy, and advocacy skills that I hope to bring to healthcare settings. Through mentoring peers, volunteering, and participating in collaborative projects, I have learned the value of listening, problem-solving, and encouraging others. I am especially grateful for the Making Waves Scholarship, which makes higher education more accessible and affirms my place in academic and professional spaces. This support allows me to continue pursuing my goals, inspired by my grandmother’s strength, guided by faith, and motivated by a desire to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

Hester Richardson Powell Memorial Service Scholarship
My academic and professional goals are rooted in my passion for healthcare and service. I plan to begin my career as a registered nurse, continue my education to become a nurse practitioner, and eventually pursue medical school to become a physician. Each step represents my commitment to lifelong learning and to providing higher levels of care to those who need it most. I am especially interested in working with underserved communities, where access to quality healthcare is often limited. Growing up in Jamaica, I noticed the disparities in healthcare access between neighborhoods, and I wanted to be part of the solution. From a young age, I was drawn to science, fascinated by how the human body works and how medicine can transform lives. This curiosity, combined with my desire to make a tangible difference, motivates me to keep learning and improving my skills so I can provide the highest level of care. Through education, discipline, and hands-on experience, I hope to become a healthcare professional who not only treats illness but also advocates for patients, addresses health disparities, and promotes wellness in communities that need it the most. I believe that strong leadership, compassion, and a deep understanding of science are essential in shaping a future where healthcare is equitable, accessible, and effective.
Giving back to my community has shaped both my values and my goals. After moving to a new country, I experienced firsthand how challenging it can be to adapt to unfamiliar systems, expectations, and environments. At first, the transition was overwhelming, but I pushed myself to persevere and adapt. I spent extra time understanding my classes, asking questions when I didn’t understand, and finding ways to connect with peers despite the initial cultural and academic differences. As I grew more confident, I realized my efforts were not just helping me succeed—they were inspiring others. Classmates who were also struggling began seeking my guidance, and I made it a point to support them, showing that challenges can be overcome with determination and hard work.
Through mentoring classmates, volunteering, and being a reliable presence in my school and community, I learned that small acts of service can create meaningful change. These experiences reinforced my belief in the importance of community and inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to helping others on a larger scale. By combining scientific knowledge, compassion, and leadership, I aim to make a positive and lasting impact, ensuring that patients not only receive care but also feel seen, valued, and supported.

One of the most significant struggles I have faced was moving to the United States and starting over in a completely new environment. Leaving behind what was familiar meant more than adjusting to a new school—it meant adapting to a new culture, new expectations, and a new version of myself. As a student entering a different education system, I felt pressure to fit in while also trying to succeed academically. At times, I felt invisible, overwhelmed, and unsure of my place.
One of the biggest challenges I faced was confidence. Speaking in class, interacting with classmates, and navigating daily school life felt intimidating. I worried about being misunderstood or standing out too much. However, instead of allowing fear to stop me, I learned to be resourceful. I paid close attention in class, asked teachers for clarification when I was confused, and used school resources to stay on track academically. I also pushed myself to participate more, even when it felt uncomfortable. Each time I spoke up or asked for help, I grew more confident in my abilities.
Responsibility played a major role in my adjustment. I realized early on that no one else could take ownership of my education for me. I had to manage my time, stay organized, and hold myself accountable, even when everything felt unfamiliar. Balancing emotional stress while maintaining focus in school taught me discipline and self-motivation. I learned how to adapt quickly, problem-solve independently, and remain committed to my goals despite challenges.
This experience has shaped who I am as a student. I am more resilient, determined, and aware of my strengths. I no longer see obstacles as setbacks, but as opportunities to grow. Moving to a new country taught me how to step outside of my comfort zone and trust myself in unfamiliar situations—skills that continue to guide me in my academic journey.
Most importantly, this struggle shaped my future goals. Experiencing vulnerability firsthand helped me understand how important it is to feel safe, supported, and understood. This is what inspired my interest in healthcare. I want to be in a profession where I can make others feel comfortable during difficult moments, just as I once needed reassurance during my transition. Whether as a nurse, nurse practitioner, or physician, I hope to combine knowledge with compassion and advocacy.
Overcoming the challenge of moving to a new country taught me that growth requires courage, responsibility, and adaptability. These lessons have shaped me into a stronger student and a future professional who values empathy, resilience, and service to others.

Moving to the United States was one of the most challenging transitions of my life. Everything about my new environment felt unfamiliar, from the school system to the social expectations in the classroom. As a new student in a new country, I often felt isolated and unsure of where I belonged. Adjusting academically was difficult, but adjusting emotionally was even harder. During this time, one teacher made a lasting impact on my life: Mr. Santoro.
From the very beginning, Mr. Santoro treated me with genuine kindness and patience. He made an effort to learn my name, speak to me directly, and check in on how I was adjusting to my new surroundings. These small but meaningful actions made me feel seen at a time when I felt invisible. Instead of making me feel like an outsider, he created a sense of belonging that helped ease my transition into a new school and a new country.
What stood out most about Mr. Santoro was the environment he created in his classroom. It was a place where students felt safe to express themselves and where differences were respected. His classroom became one of the few spaces where I felt comfortable and accepted. Because of him, school gradually became a place of comfort rather than fear. His support helped me build confidence and reminded me that kindness can have a powerful impact on someone who feels lost or uncertain.
Beyond academics, Mr. Santoro taught me an important life lesson through his actions. He showed me that leadership does not always come from authority, but from empathy, understanding, and compassion. He led by example, demonstrating how one person can make a meaningful difference simply by being supportive and attentive. Watching how he treated his students inspired me to think about the kind of person I want to become.
Because of Mr. Santoro, I realized that I want to be in a position where I can help others feel safe, supported, and at home—especially during difficult transitions. His influence has shaped my personal values and my future goals. Whether in healthcare or another service-focused field, I hope to create the same sense of comfort and security for others that he once created for me. His kindness during one of the most vulnerable periods of my life continues to motivate me to lead with compassion and purpose. I express severe gratitude to Mr.Santoro and the impact he has made on my life.

Leadership and science are powerful forces that work together to shape our future. Science allows society to advance through discovery, innovation, and research, while leadership ensures that these advancements are used responsibly and for the greater good. When combined, leadership and science create solutions that improve lives and guide society toward progress.
Science plays a major role in shaping the future by transforming how people live, communicate, and stay healthy. Through scientific research, we have developed life-saving medical treatments, advanced technology, and a deeper understanding of the world around us. In healthcare, science is especially important because it provides evidence-based practices that improve patient outcomes and quality of life. From vaccines to modern medical equipment, scientific advancements continue to save lives and create new possibilities for future generations.
However, scientific knowledge alone is not enough to create meaningful change. Leadership is necessary to guide how scientific discoveries are applied. Strong leaders make informed decisions, advocate for ethical practices, and ensure that scientific advancements are accessible to everyone. In fields such as healthcare, leadership is essential in supporting medical professionals, addressing health disparities, and implementing research into real-world practice. Effective leaders also inspire others to learn, collaborate, and contribute to positive change.
The future depends on individuals who are willing to lead with both knowledge and compassion. As society faces global challenges such as public health crises and technological ethics, leaders who understand science are better equipped to make responsible decisions. Likewise, scientists who embrace leadership can ensure their work benefits communities and not just scientific advancement.
As someone who aspires to pursue a career in healthcare, I believe leadership and science are inseparable. Science will provide me with the skills and knowledge to care for patients effectively, while leadership will allow me to advocate for others and contribute to meaningful change. By combining leadership and science, I hope to help shape a future focused on innovation, responsibility, and service.

The movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is Soul. At first, I thought it would just be another animated movie, but it ended up changing the way I think about purpose and what it means to truly live. What stood out to me most was how the movie challenges the idea that life is only meaningful if you achieve one big goal or talent. It made me realize that life is happening constantly, not just when everything goes perfectly.
In Soul, the main character, Joe Gardner, believes his entire purpose is to become a successful jazz musician. He spends most of his life chasing that dream and overlooks the small moments that actually make life meaningful. Watching this made me reflect on how easy it is to focus only on future goals and forget to appreciate the present. Like Joe, I sometimes place pressure on myself to reach a certain destination and believe that once I get there, everything will finally feel complete. The movie helped me understand that happiness and purpose are not waiting at the finish line; they are built through everyday experiences.
One of the most eye-opening messages in the movie is that purpose does not always have to be something extraordinary. The character 22 struggles because they believe they need a big reason to exist, when in reality, simply experiencing life is enough. This message really resonated with me. It reminded me that my worth is not defined only by achievements or future success, but by how I live, grow, and impact others along the way.
Soul also taught me the importance of being present. Simple moments like enjoying music, food, or conversation are often overlooked, yet they shape who we are. The movie encouraged me to slow down and appreciate those moments instead of rushing through life focused only on what comes next. This perspective has helped me become more mindful and grateful in my daily life.
Overall, Soul impacted me because it changed how I view purpose and success. It reminded me that living life fully matters more than chasing one single goal. As I prepare for college and my future career, I carry this lesson with me. I still have goals and ambitions, but I now understand that enjoying the journey, learning from experiences, and appreciating the present are just as important. Soul helped me realize that life’s meaning is found not only in what we achieve, but in how we choose to live every day.

Growing up without consistent parental support has shaped my character and the way I approach responsibility, resilience, and personal growth. During my early years, my grandmother and aunt became my main support system. Their constant presence showed me what it means to care for someone not just emotionally, but consistently. Watching them step in during difficult moments taught me the importance of showing up for others, a lesson that continues to influence my goals today and sparked my interest in pursuing a career in healthcare.
From a young age, I learned how to manage disappointment and uncertainty. I experienced moments where I had to wait for change and eventually realized that progress would not always come easily or on my own. These experiences helped me develop patience and emotional strength. Rather than allowing setbacks to discourage me, I learned how to adapt, stay focused, and continue moving forward even when the outcome was uncertain. This mindset has stayed with me throughout my academic journey and daily life.
Throughout school, there were times when I had to stand independently. Attending award ceremonies without family present or navigating school responsibilities on my own pushed me to become more confident and self-reliant. Instead of feeling defeated, I used these moments as motivation to work harder and prove to myself that I was capable of succeeding regardless of my circumstances. These experiences strengthened my work ethic and taught me the value of perseverance, discipline, and self-belief.
Relocating from Jamaica to the United States introduced a new set of challenges. Adjusting to a different culture, education system, and environment required flexibility and determination. This transition reinforced the resilience I had already built over time. Learning how to navigate unfamiliar situations, communicate effectively, and overcome obstacles helped me grow academically and personally. Each challenge became an opportunity to strengthen my confidence and independence while pushing me out of my comfort zone.
Now, I am focused on building a future centered on service and impact. My experiences have shaped my desire to pursue healthcare, where compassion, patience, and responsibility are essential qualities. I aim to become someone others can rely on during difficult moments, just as I once relied on those who supported me. While my journey has not been easy, it has prepared me to face future challenges with strength and purpose. As I move forward into college and beyond, I am motivated to turn my experiences into meaningful contributions that make a real difference in the lives of others.
