FinalistBio
I am Jada henry and im attending Austin community college majoring in carpentry. My goal is to become an architect to create accessible, affordable housing opportunities in underprivileged communities. Living in a college town, I have seen countless rental properties available. Yet there are few homes for sale that are affordable enough for college students and first-time buyers. This is the case in many towns throughout America, especially areas with a low standard of living. I want to create neighborhoods that include affordable starter homes. This would enable low and middle-class families to build equity, avoid excessive debt, and create financial stability for their futures. I believe I deserve to be selected for one of your foundation's scholarships because as a hard working student I commit myself to effectively take advantage of the opportunity that the scholarships will provide me. Besides, I am a student that does not only persistently works hard academically, but also I constantly try to improve my own
community's quality of life by doing volunteer work. I believe education is the key to success, and I try to connect my passion for
education with my desire of helping others.

The trade I am passionate about pursuing is carpentry. From a young age, I was drawn to working with my hands, creating things, and solving problems in a practical, tangible way. Carpentry allows me to bring ideas to life—transforming raw materials like wood into functional, beautiful structures. It’s a craft that combines skill, creativity, precision, and patience, and I find it deeply fulfilling to be part of something that has both immediate results and lasting impact.
What truly draws me to carpentry is the versatility of the trade. Carpenters are essential in almost every stage of construction—from framing houses and building staircases to crafting detailed cabinetry and custom furniture. The possibilities in this field are endless. Whether I’m working on a new residential home, renovating an older building, or constructing outdoor structures like decks and gazebos, carpentry gives me the chance to continuously learn and apply new techniques. It’s never repetitive or boring. Every project is different, and each day presents new challenges and opportunities to grow.
My passion for carpentry started with my **grandfather**, who was a master carpenter. Growing up, I would spend weekends in his workshop, watching him work and handing him tools. At first, I was just curious about what he was doing, but over time, I began to understand the craftsmanship behind his work. He never rushed—every cut had to be perfect, every joint aligned. He taught me that good carpentry is about more than just putting wood together; it’s about pride in your work and doing things right the first time. He showed me how to read blueprints, measure carefully, and pay attention to small details. But more importantly, he taught me patience and persistence.
Another source of inspiration was my experience in a high school construction tech class. We built real projects, learned to use power tools safely, and worked as a team. My instructor encouraged me to consider a future in the trades and even helped me get a summer job with a local carpenter. That hands-on experience was a turning point. I got to see what a career in carpentry could really look like and fell in love with the work. I appreciated how every project required planning, teamwork, and problem-solving, and I liked being able to see the results of my labor at the end of the day.
I am passionate about carpentry because it’s more than just a job—it’s a meaningful, skill-based profession that can provide a good living while allowing me to be creative and active. I take pride in working with my hands, using tools, and seeing a physical result that I helped build. There’s something deeply satisfying about stepping back at the end of the day and seeing a frame, a floor, or a cabinet that I constructed with care.
