My name is Jada Dunkley, and I just graduated high school in Port St. Lucie, Fl. In the fall, I’ll be attending the illustrious Tuskegee University, where I would like to study architectural engineering. As a first generation college student, coming from a single-parent home, going to college means way more than people seem to think. I think it opens new opportunities, new experiences, a better future, etc. While growing up, I had to watch my mom work endlessly just to provide for me and my siblings. While she was working I stayed home to help take care of my siblings. Seeing her preserve through so much shows me the importance of hard work and determination. Those experiences have help shaped me into the person I am today and have motivated me to chase my dreams. Throughout my life, I have learned that success is not measured by where you begin but by your willingness to keep moving forward. Every challenge I have faced has strengthened my character and motivated me to a pursue higher education. I know that college will not always be easy, especially with the financial burden that comes with earning a degree, but I am determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way. I chose Architecture because it’s more than designing buildings to me. I want to create affordable, safe, and beautiful spaces that bring communities together and improve people’s quality of life. I believe everyone deserves to live, learn, and work in environments that inspire hope and opportunity. Through my education, I hope to design schools, community centers, and homes that are both functional and welcoming, especially in underserved communities. Receiving this scholarship would mean so much to me. It would relieve so much financial stress and allow me to focus on my studies and personal growth. I am 100% committed to working hard, giving back to my community, and using my education to create a lasting, positive impact on the lives of others. As I start my new chapter soon, I’m excited for the new opportunities and experiences. I am committed to use my education not to achieve my own dreams but to also inspire other along the way. I believe that with faith, a strong education, and perseverance, I can do way more than building builds, but to creating a better environment, stronger communities, and inspire future generations for beyond myself.

When I think about women’s empowerment, I think about strength, confidence, and the ability to keep going even when things get difficult. Throughout my life, I have been surrounded by strong women who have shown me what it means to be determined, caring, and resilient. These women have taught me that empowerment is not only about what you accomplish for yourself, but also about how you encourage and support the people around you. I want my life to be an example that women can overcome challenges, follow their dreams, and make a difference in the lives of others. One of the biggest examples of strength in my life is my mother. Watching her work hard and make sacrifices for my siblings and me has shown me the true meaning of perseverance. When my family went through difficult changes, I saw how much responsibility she carried while still making sure we were taken care of. During that time, I also learned how to step up and help more at home. Taking care of my siblings taught me patience, responsibility, and compassion. It showed me that women are capable of handling difficult situations while still being a source of love and support for others. This fall, I will be attending the illustrious Tuskegee University to study architecture, and I am excited to continue growing as a student, a leader, and a young woman. Through my involvement in organizations, church, leadership opportunities, and community activities, I have learned the importance of using my voice and my actions to positively impact others. I believe that women’s empowerment starts when we support each other instead of competing with one another. As I continue my journey at Tuskegee, I hope to encourage other young women to believe in themselves, step outside of their comfort zones, and never let obstacles stop them from chasing their dreams. As I continue my education and pursue my career in architecture, I hope to represent and empower women in my field. Architecture is a career where women have not always been equally represented, and I want to show other young women that they belong in spaces where they may not always see themselves. My goal is to combine my passion for architecture and interior design by creating my own business, mentoring young women, and creating opportunities for others to succeed. My faith in God has played a major role in shaping who I am and how I view empowerment. I believe God has given every woman unique talents, gifts, and a purpose. I want to use the opportunities He gives me to uplift others and remind women that their stories matter. Through my education at Tuskegee University, my future career, and my commitment to serving others, I hope to inspire women to dream big, work hard, and never stop believing in themselves.
      HBCU Legacy & Excellence Scholarship
Growing up, I always knew education was important, but I did not fully understand the impact it could have on my life until I began my journey toward attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU). To me, attending an HBCU is not just about receiving a degree; it is about becoming part of a legacy filled with strength, excellence, culture, and leaders who have created opportunities for generations after them. My HBCU experience at Tuskegee University has shaped my values by reminding me of the importance of perseverance, representation, and community. As a young Black woman pursuing architecture, I understand the importance of being in an environment where I can learn from people who share similar backgrounds, experiences, and goals. HBCUs create a space where students are encouraged to be proud of who they are while also challenging themselves to become the best versions of themselves. My journey has not always been easy. Growing up, I experienced challenges that taught me responsibility, patience, and the importance of having faith in God. When my family went through difficult changes, I learned how important it was to step up, support my siblings, and be there for my mom. Those experiences shaped the way I view leadership. I learned that being a leader is not always about having a title; sometimes it is about serving others, being dependable, and making a difference when no one is watching. Through my involvement in organizations, church, leadership opportunities, and community service, I have developed a passion for helping others and creating positive change. My HBCU experience continues to strengthen those values by showing me the power of community and the importance of using my gifts to impact the people around me. As I continue my career in architecture, I hope to carry on the legacy of HBCUs by creating spaces that inspire, connect, and uplift communities. I want to combine my love for architecture and interior design by designing environments where people feel welcomed, valued, and represented. In the future, I hope to create my own business and use my success to provide opportunities for others. I also want to encourage younger students to believe in themselves and pursue careers they may not see many people like them in. I want to be an example that your circumstances do not determine your future. With faith, determination, and hard work, anything is possible. My HBCU journey is helping me become more than just a college graduate. It is helping me become a leader, a creator, and someone who continues the legacy of those who came before me. I hope to honor that legacy by using my education, my voice, and my talents to make a lasting impact on the world around me.

I learned from a young age that every story is different, and the best stories are told by the people who have experienced them. In this case, I may not have the most difficult story, but my story has shaped me into the person I am today. Growing up, I thought I had the perfect family. Life was great, my family was happy, and everything seemed fine. However, I did not realize the challenges my family was actually facing. My parents were working multiple jobs just to keep a roof over my siblings’ and my head, and sometimes that still was not enough. But in my eyes, I thought everything was okay, and my imagination was just running wild. When I was around the age of nine, my “perfect” family shattered into pieces. My parents were fighting, and they decided to separate. This was one of the worst experiences of my life. I felt like I had to step up more in the household and become more of a mother figure to my siblings because my mom had to work day and night to keep a roof over our heads and clothes on our backs. I thought this role would be easy, but it was not. It was one of the hardest things I had to experience at such a young age. I took care of my siblings and have always been there for my mom the best way I can. I went through things that were not meant to define me but to prepare me for the person I am becoming. These experiences happened for a purpose. I believe God placed these barriers in my life not only to test my faith but also to prepare me for a greater future. My experiences in organizations, church, and leadership opportunities have helped me grow into a person who values dedication, compassion, and making a difference in my community. My current goal is to become the best person I can be for my future family and myself. My first step was getting accepted into an HBCU with a great architectural program, and I accomplished that goal. I am attending the illustrious Tuskegee University, and I plan on graduating with my bachelor’s degree in architecture while continuing to work hard toward becoming a licensed architect. In the future, I hope to combine my love for both architecture and interior design by creating my own business and designing spaces that inspire others. Just like a strong building needs a solid foundation, I know my experiences have created the foundation for the future I am building. The challenges I have faced, the faith that has guided me, and the people I love have shaped me into the person I am today. As I continue my education in architecture, I hope to use my talents to create spaces that inspire others and make a lasting impact. I know my journey is only beginning, and with God’s guidance, determination, and hard work, I am ready to build a future that honors where I came from and helps others along the way.
