Hello, My name is Jada Angell and I plan on attending Concord University to pursue a degree in social work. I am a child who has previously been in and been adopted from the foster care system. I want to use my experience and knowledge to help others by working at adoption and foster care organizations in the future. I am very passionate about giving children the childhood they deserve and in the future advocate the importance of adoption organizations and what they can provide. In the future I also want to encourage others to become foster parents and adopt.

When I was about six years old, I was put into the foster care system. The first time, I was taken from my biological parents and sent to my grandmother who lived with her boyfriend on a farm. I loved the farm, it was unique and nothing like I had ever experienced. I used to help get eggs from the chicken coops, feed the sheep, and pick up feathers the birds and peacocks shed everywhere. However, during this time I was usually left to my own devices as my grandmother worked during the day and her boyfriend did not feel obligated to watch a child that wasn’t his most of the time. Shortly after, I was sent to another home. This time, I was sent to strangers who I’d never met before. Their names were Mr. and Mrs. Angell, but they told me to call them mom and dad. I was nervous, scared, and did not want to accept the situation that was forced upon me. The switch was too sudden and I felt like I didn't belong. I wanted to go back to the place where my family was, who I had known all my life and raised me up to this point. However, after living at the Angells house for a couple of years, I realized that family is created, not by the bond of blood but by the bond of love and relationships that form over time. I was adopted by the same strangers who took me in and have treated me as their own ever since. Now that I am older, and about to attend college, I want to pursue a degree in social work. I want to use this degree to find children a family that will accept them as their own just like mine and give them the chance at a better life. I also want to shine a light on the importance of adoption organizations and the many children who are forced into them. So many people undermine or shun adoption because they do not understand what it is like to be in the system. I want to change that point of view to show others that there are options and that adopting a child will change their lives while saving another.
