Julius Quentin Jackson Scholarship
At the age of three, I became a state ward as a foster care child. This was more than just a difficult start to life for me, it would prove to be the largest obstacle I would have to overcome. I had to adapt to many new and strange environments. The instability that comes from constant change created significant hurdles in my formation and education. In just three years, I went through three different foster homes, I grew up in complicated settings and faced many challenges that no child should ever have to experience. My father was completely out of the picture, and my birth mother had recurring drug addiction issues. It was a constant battle of back and forth for her to get clean, but soon enough, she was required to make the decision to put my little sister and I in foster care. After being placed in the foster care system, I had to adjust to new environments and people in my life. This caused me to struggle in many aspects of life in my most formational times. In two of the household transitions, I lacked a stable home and support systems. This led to significant struggles in my education and development. School testing revealed that I was struggling academically and lagging far behind my classmates in essential skills such as reading, writing, and math. In July 2015, I was adopted by Tyler and Karmen Wilterding and became the place where I truly found a home. In this place of permanency, I found I could trust others and depend on my adoptive parents to help me succeed in all aspects of my life. I became determined to be successful and catch up in my education. I now had a family who dedicated themselves to help me achieve my goals through challenging me and encouraging hard work. Some of the most meaningful family experiences included spending hours at the dinner table to help me with my homework. Because of their support, I discovered a love for reading and learned new skills like playing the piano and dancing. Working to stay strong through the foster care system has taught me resilience and important life skills, helping me become the courageous and determined person I am today. Yes, I faced countless obstacles, but to this day, I am grateful for the adversity throughout my childhood that formed me into a resilient young woman. As one of five siblings, the financial burden on my family is substantial, as resources are stretched to accommodate the educational needs of multiple children simultaneously. This situation necessitates a careful allocation of funds, which often leaves limited financial support available for my academic pursuits. Receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate some of the financial strain on my family but also enable me to focus more on my studies without constantly worrying about financial constraints. Such support is essential for me to achieve my educational goals and ultimately contribute positively to my community and society at large.
MexiDreams Scholarship
The influence of my Mexican heritage on my identity and aspirations is significant, particularly in the context of my experience as an adopted child. Growing up, the cultural traditions, values, and narratives of my Mexican heritage have played a pivotal role in shaping my worldview and personal beliefs. The lively customs, familial connections, and historical legacies tied to my heritage have fostered in me a deep appreciation for community and perseverance, which I carry into my future ambitions. As I navigate my path forward, these cultural elements serve as a guiding compass, motivating me to pursue goals that honor my roots while also fostering a sense of belonging and purpose in a broader societal context. The relationship between my heritage and my experiences with adoption has not only deepened my understanding of identity but has also inspired me to advocate for cultural awareness and inclusivity in my future pursuits. As I have advanced in my education journey, I have developed a passion for social media communication. I intend to major in sports media and communication, and with this, I will be able to express my passion for sports and explore career opportunities through journalism, broadcasting, digital content creation, and more. I hope to engage in multiple extracurricular activities, such as internships or research projects, that will provide me with hands-on experience and valuable networking opportunities. I also hope to enhance my skills in multimedia production, allowing me to create engaging content across various social media platforms.
It is imperative my financial situation and the critical role that scholarship assistance plays in facilitating my ongoing education, particularly in the context of my family dynamics. As one of five siblings, the financial burden on my family is substantial, as resources are stretched to accommodate the educational needs of multiple children simultaneously. This situation necessitates a careful allocation of funds, which often leaves limited financial support available for my academic pursuits. Consequently, receiving a scholarship would not only alleviate some of the financial strain on my family but also enable me to focus more intently on my studies without the constant worry of financial constraints. Such support is essential for me to achieve my educational goals and ultimately contribute positively to my community and society at large.
