Reimagining Education Scholarship
Growing up in a Hispanic household, the concept of mental health was never discussed. I never knew that it was okay to find help when I was struggling. I've always struggled with anxiety and the idea that I was completely alone. I never opened up to my family or peers because I feared that they might not understand or worse, they may think that I was "crazy".
If I could create a class that would be mediatory for all K-12 students, It would be called "My Mind Matters: Understanding emotions and Reaching Out." This course would help students explore their emotions in a safe and appropriate manner with a supportive envionrment. The class would be taught at every grade level and it would adapt lessons based on age. As the students grow, the course would address deeper topics such as depression.
The course would also offer lessons on coping skills and stress management. I would also create programs where students can have access to needs such as free food, clothes, menstrual products, and shelter. I would also add clubs that encourage the students to give back to their community. They can plant community gardens, host fundraisers and clean up around town. This would allow the students to strengthen their community while earning volunteer hours.
Mental health support is crucial for everyone. Students should always have a place where they can feel safe. Without the proper resources, students are more prone to anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, and emotional or academic burnout. This also can effect their self-esteem and it can cause them to loose motivation.
I strongly believe that this class could make a life-changing impact. It can help decrease suicide rates and help eliminate bullying. Everyday students face challenges with little to no support. I want to create a class that would provide students with the tools they need in order to maintain a healthy mind where they too can learn to help others. "My Mind Matters" would help us break stigmas, like the one I grew up with. This class would help students understand that they are not alone.
As a student at Cal Poly Pomona majoring in Early Childhood Education, my goal is to become a high school teacher who educates and supports students. I want to help create an environment where students can feel safe and seen. No one should ever feel alone in their battles. I will be the type of teacher who would fight alongside with them so that they can always succeed.
