I have been a passionate and devoted educator to children on the autism spectrum for well over 10 years now and I’ve loved every minute of it. My dedication to seeing life through the lens of another has been what’s guided me through the majority of my adult career. It is why I strive with every fiber of my being to become the best nurse I can for children with developmental disabilities. I have found it rather unfortunate the countless times I’ve accompanied my students into the sterile and cold environment of a doctor’s office only to find that the medical professionals there to treat them were equally distant and lacked all human decency.
Though I am only one, I want to know that from within me, my patients and their families receive the dignity and compassion that they deserve. My career has taught me that so much can be gained with children via modeling, showing a caring, loving smile, and giving them patience and patience to get through an overwhelmingly difficult experience for them. I want to be the kind of nurse that allows for my patients to develop a relationship built on trust and confidence. I wish to be the advocate that they so desperately need and strive to demonstrate that by my side they will receive the support and encouragement along with a safe and welcoming face ready to guide them through their difficult time.

As I ponder upon the journey and the experiences that have molded me, it becomes profoundly clear why following a career path in nursing is not only important but immensely significant to me. With a background in working with children with autism spectrum disorder, I have seen firsthand the transformative abilities of compassion, understanding, and dedicated care. Today, I am enthusiastic to channel my passion and knowledge into the field of nursing, where I can create an everlasting impact in the lives of individuals in need.
My years as both an educator and behavioralist for children on the autism spectrum have opened my eyes to the distinctive struggles people with developmental disabilities continuously face. It has been an absolute honor to share in their development, observe their accomplishments, and offer the encouragement and support needed for them to flourish. Nevertheless, I have witnessed the vital role that healthcare personnel play in their lives, specifically during medical visits. Lamentably, I have observed the disconnect between healthcare delivery and sympathetic consideration, leaving this susceptible population to feel devalued and diminished as human beings.
This feeling of disconnect and detachment is what powers my purpose for becoming a nurse. I long to connect the space between medical capabilities and sincere human connection, to guarantee each patient, apart from their ailment, obtains the utmost quality of treatment and care with respect, understanding, and dignity. Nursing is beyond a career path; it is a promise to ease pain and encourage a therapeutic recovery.
Working alongside children on the autism spectrum has proven to me the significance of providing holistic nursing, where all are treated as whole individuals. I genuinely believe nursing to be the ideal line of profession to symbolize this methodology. As I submerge into this field of care, I will foster a trusting rapport with patients and their families as I advocate for their individual needs and encourage them to partake in their care. Via attentive listening, continuous communication, and complete support, I aspire to cultivate an atmosphere where patients feel empowered and respected, irrespective of their challenges.
Furthermore, practicing nursing will assist me in uniting my adoration for education and my pledge to healthcare. Through education, I have immediate knowledge on the influence of cultivating relationships, modeling behaviors, and giving untiring support. I seek to transmit these virtues into my nursing career, acknowledging that patient education and involvement are crucial constituents of fruitful healthcare results. By arming patients and families with education and understanding indispensable to coping with their situation, I intend to nurture independence, strength, and enhanced well-being.
Additionally, my involvement with children on the autism spectrum has educated me on the meaning of adaptability, flexibility, patience, and welcoming diverse populations. I have acquired a profound admiration for the exceptionality of every individual, comprehending those personalized plans of care and flexible tactics are key. By implementing these principles, I may deliver tailored care that acclimates the explicit needs of each patient, endorsing inclusivity, and equal access to healthcare.
In conclusion, following a career path in nursing is of immeasurable significance to me. It is a chance to bridge my passion for working with children on the autism spectrum with my profound aspiration to make a progressive influence on the lives of individuals in need. By personifying compassion, promoting advocacy, and upholding holistic care, I desire to bond the hole concerning healthcare and human kindness, guaranteeing that all patients I come across obtain the care merited to them. Nursing is my vocation, and I am devoted to accepting this dignified calling with every fiber of my essence.

Charity's Alumnus Erudition Award
I have been a passionate and devoted educator to children on the autism spectrum for well over 10 years now and I’ve loved every minute of it. My dedication to seeing life through the lens of another has been what’s guided me through the majority of my adult career. It is why I strive with every fiber of my being to become the best nurse I can for children with developmental disabilities as I take this huge leap in my career. I have found it rather unfortunate the countless times I’ve accompanied my students into the sterile and cold environment of a doctor’s office, only to find that the medical professionals there treating them were equally distant and lacked all human decency. My goal in life is to bring my skills as an educator into my discipline as a nurse.
Though I am only one, I want to know that from within me, my patients and their families receive the dignity and compassion that they deserve. My career has taught me that so much can be gained with children via modeling, showing a caring, loving smile, and giving them the patience to get through an overwhelmingly difficult experience for them. I want to be the kind of nurse that allows my patients to develop a relationship built on trust and confidence. I wish to be the advocate that they so desperately need and strive to demonstrate that by my side they will receive support and encouragement along with a safe and welcoming face ready to guide them through their difficult time.
Furthermore, as I continue to move forward in my nursing training, I've come to realize that patients and their families feel that much more confident in your care for them when the time is taken to explain procedures and develop a relationship built on trust and respect. I've experienced families expressing their gratitude for seeing how a simple nursing student took the extra time to talk through a procedure with their child while developing a warm environment. So often, individuals can fall victim to moving from patient to patient as though just another number. The practice of patient care needs to be at the center of nursing and this can often mean providing comfort and a loving touch. We must put ourselves in the shoes of these individuals and work to make their experience the most pleasant possible. I intend to be that at the very least for my patients.

In such a controversial time, in which politics are so eager to define what or better yet who is American, I am prouder than ever to recognize how important my Hispanic upbringing contributed to who I am today. I grew up in Mexico 2.0 as my husband refers to it, otherwise known as the beautiful state of California to two immigrant parents and they are forever the biggest supporters in my pursuit of higher education. My first embedded memories are of a five-year-old girl struggling alongside her mother as she takes on her first tackle at the English language. My parents, though barely overcoming primary education, always sought to push me toward achieving my greatest potential academically. The statement that always resonates with me is “we want more for you.” The Latina rearing I received instilled in me the value of determination, hard work, and above all faith in myself.
My heritage revealed to me the significance behind having the conviction to never give up on my dreams. As someone pursuing a second degree in a different discipline, I always carry with me the image of my mother working as a housekeeper twelve hours a day to show me the worth of hard work. My father worked strenuous laborious days to ensure that food, clothing, and shelter were provided for me. My Mexican parents revealed that it is not solely what you do, but for who you do it, that makes it all worth it.
My Hispanic background demonstrated the importance of family and caring for others. As I pursue my degree in nursing, I firmly center my approach to care as centered around family. I think about the importance and impact that my patients have not only on themselves but on the impact that they have amongst their loved ones. I grew up enriched by the influences of my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents and I take those inspirational people with me wherever I go. Nursing should be more than caring for the physically ill, but should greatly impact the hearts and spirits of those that entrust their care to health professionals. I want the nurturing aspects of my culture to transcend into what I do daily for others.
Ultimately, culture has taught me that the character of a people is what is most valuable. Being a Mexican American, the privilege that has granted me so many freedoms and rights is what keeps me moving to grant others that same dignity in my future profession. I carry my Hispanic customs and traditions close to my heart. They influence my values, opinions, and ambitions into bringing to the world more respect, acceptance, and faith.
