My name is Jacoby Martinez, and I am an ambitious student with a strong passion for healthcare and a deep desire to serve others through nursing. I am currently working toward my goal of becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), a role that combines advanced medical knowledge, technical skill, and the ability to make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives every day. Growing up, I was always drawn to helping people—whether babysitting for my family or supporting friends through challenges—and I’ve found purpose in being a dependable, caring presence in others’ lives. My interest in the medical field was sparked by seeing how nurses could bring comfort, safety, and healing to patients and families during difficult times. I am known for being a fast learner with a strong work ethic, positive energy, and the ability to stay calm and focused under pressure. These qualities have served me well in school, extracurricular activities like band and gymnastics, and volunteer work in my community. Each experience has strengthened my communication skills, discipline, and passion for teamwork—all of which are essential in the field of nursing

My name is Jacoby Martinez, and I am a motivated student who is working hard to build a meaningful future through education and service. Throughout high school and college coursework, I have learned the importance of responsibility, perseverance, and compassion, especially while balancing academics, work, and personal challenges. These experiences have shaped my desire to pursue a career in healthcare, where I can make a direct and lasting impact on the lives of others. I plan to pursue a career in healthcare, with strong interests in nursing and allied health professions. Through my coursework in medical terminology, phlebotomy, and clinical skills, I have gained firsthand exposure to how critical patient-centered care is. I am especially drawn to healthcare because it combines science, problem-solving, and human connection. I want to work in a role where I can support patients during vulnerable moments, advocate for their needs, and contribute to a healthcare system that is efficient, ethical, and compassionate. My goal is to positively impact the world by improving patient experiences and outcomes, particularly for individuals who may feel overlooked or underserved. I believe that small actions—such as listening carefully, communicating clearly, and treating patients with dignity—can make a powerful difference. I hope to work in environments where I can help reduce health disparities and ensure patients feel respected and informed about their care. In the future, I also want to be involved in mentoring or supporting students who are interested in healthcare careers, especially those who may not have strong support systems. Outside of academics, I have developed leadership and teamwork skills through work and volunteer experiences. Participating in activities such as church programs and assisting with youth events has taught me patience, accountability, and the importance of service. These experiences reinforced my passion for helping others and strengthened my ability to remain calm, professional, and empathetic in challenging situations—qualities that are essential in healthcare. Receiving this scholarship would make a significant difference in my educational journey. It would help reduce financial stress, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies, clinical training, and personal development. With this support, I can continue building the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in healthcare and give back to my community in meaningful ways. In the long term, I want my career to reflect integrity, compassion, and dedication to service. I am committed to continuous learning and personal growth so that I can adapt to the evolving needs of patients and the healthcare field. By pursuing my education with purpose and determination, I hope to make a positive impact on individuals, families, and communities, and to honor the opportunity this scholarship provides.

My name is Jacoby, and I am a student who values hard work, service, and community involvement. In school, I focus on my grades and enjoy learning new things that help prepare me for my future. Outside the classroom, I participate in volunteer activities that allow me to support others and make a positive impact. Being involved in my community has taught me responsibility, leadership, and how to work with others toward a common goal. These experiences have helped shape who I am and encouraged me to continue serving others in ways that matter. One of the most significant influences in my life was watching my grandpa go through a heart transplant. Seeing how doctors, nurses, and medical staff cared for him through one of the hardest times of his life made a strong impression on me. I noticed how they helped him go from his lowest point to being his best self again — physically and emotionally. That experience showed me how powerful compassionate, skilled healthcare can be not only for the patient but also for their family. It made me want to be part of a profession where I can help others in their most vulnerable moments, the way my grandpa’s healthcare team helped him. Because of these experiences, I plan to pursue a career in healthcare. I want to help people live healthier lives and support families during challenging times. Studying health science will give me the skills and knowledge to be the kind of professional who not only treats symptoms but also connects with people on a personal level. I want to use my education to serve others, especially those who may not have access to quality care or who feel forgotten in difficult situations. If I could start my own charity, its mission would be to support families facing serious health challenges. Many families experience emotional stress and financial strain when a loved one is sick or undergoing treatment. My charity would serve individuals and families dealing with chronic illnesses, long hospital stays, major surgeries, or other medical challenges. Volunteers would provide practical support such as transportation to medical appointments, meal delivery, and childcare assistance on treatment days. They would also offer emotional support by being present, listening, and encouraging families during hard moments. Creating a network of volunteers who show compassion and understanding would help families feel less alone. This charity would also work with local healthcare professionals, community centers, and counseling services to offer comprehensive support for families in need. Volunteers would be trained to provide respectful care and to connect families with resources that help reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing. By combining practical help with emotional encouragement, this charity would serve as a source of hope and support during some of life’s most difficult times. Overall, my school involvement, passion for community service, and future goals in healthcare reflect my commitment to helping others. I want to continue growing as a person and as a professional who brings care, empathy, and positive change to the lives of those I serve.
    Simon Strong Scholarship
Everyone faces adversity in life, and I am no exception. A time that truly tested my strength and resilience came when I struggled to balance academic expectations, personal responsibilities, and self-doubt during my sophomore year of high school. I had always been a student who worked hard and earned good grades, but that year brought a level of pressure I had never experienced before. I was trying to maintain high grades in challenging courses while also managing responsibilities at home, including helping care for younger siblings because my parents worked multiple jobs to support our family. The stress of juggling schoolwork and family obligations made me feel overwhelmed and exhausted, and there were moments when I doubted whether I could keep going. I felt like I was being pulled in every direction, struggling to give my best in class while also being there for my family when they needed me. It felt like every day was a test of endurance with no clear end in sight, and it challenged my confidence and focus as a student. Instead of letting the pressure break me, I chose to face my adversity head-on. I began by organizing my time more intentionally, creating a schedule that allowed me to study effectively while still fulfilling my responsibilities at home. I asked teachers for help when I didn’t understand material, and I reached out to classmates for study groups so I could learn better and stay motivated. I learned to communicate my struggles with my parents, and together we found ways to make sure my siblings were taken care of without sacrificing my education. I also set small goals for myself each week — finishing assignments early, dedicating time to review subjects I found difficult, and taking healthy breaks to avoid burnout. Over time, these changes made a difference. My grades improved, I felt less stressed, and I regained confidence in my ability to manage my responsibilities without feeling overwhelmed. This adversity taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, time management, and the importance of asking for help when I need it. It showed me that challenges are not obstacles meant to stop me, but opportunities to grow stronger and more capable. I became more resilient, and I developed skills that now help me thrive even in difficult situations. I learned that it’s okay to struggle, but it’s not okay to give up. I also learned that asking for support is not a sign of weakness, but a step toward strength. If I could offer advice to someone facing similar circumstances, I would say: don’t be afraid to seek help and don’t underestimate your own strength. It’s okay if you don’t have all the answers right away — what matters is that you keep trying, keep learning, and keep moving forward. Set small goals, celebrate your progress, and remember that every challenge you overcome prepares you for the next. Adversity doesn’t define you — how you respond to it does. (Reflection inspired by strategies for writing compelling adversity stories and personal growth through challenges.)
Sgt. Albert Dono Ware Memorial Scholarship
Sgt. Albert Dono Ware’s legacy reflects the values of service, sacrifice, and bravery — principles that have deeply shaped my personal journey and inspired the way I view my role in addressing current challenges faced by the African diaspora in the United States. Sgt. Ware served six years in the U.S. Army and died from wounds sustained when his vehicle was attacked in Afghanistan, leaving behind a legacy of commitment to something greater than himself. His life reminds me that true leadership means serving others even when the cost is high, taking risks for the wellbeing of the community, and standing firm with courage during difficult times. These values have influenced my personal path by motivating me to seek out opportunities to support others and to think beyond myself. Growing up, I saw firsthand the impact that compassion and selflessness can have when individuals devote their time and energy to helping others succeed. Whether it was volunteering with community groups or standing up for classmates who felt overlooked, I have tried to act in ways that embody the same commitment to others that Sergeant Ware showed. That commitment has shaped my vision of how I want to contribute to addressing structural challenges and inequalities experienced by people of the African diaspora in America. Today, the African diaspora in the U.S. continues to confront systemic economic, educational, and social barriers that limit opportunities for many Black individuals and families. These disparities are not new but have deep historical roots in discriminatory policies such as segregation, redlining, and unequal access to educational opportunities, all of which have contributed to persistent wealth gaps and limited access to resources. Research shows that discriminatory housing practices and unequal educational funding have led to long-term economic disadvantages for Black communities, reducing wealth accumulation and limiting economic mobility across generations. One of the most critical reforms needed today is equitable education policy. Expanding access to quality education from early childhood through higher education, increasing funding for underresourced schools, and implementing policies that support teacher training in culturally responsive teaching are essential steps in closing opportunity gaps. Education has long been seen as a driver of socioeconomic progress, but structural inequities in school systems make it harder for many students in the African diaspora to achieve comparable outcomes. Addressing these gaps would help to ensure that all students have the support they need to succeed academically and professionally. Another critical area for reform is economic empowerment. Programs such as baby bonds — publicly funded trust accounts for children from low-wealth families — can help reduce racial wealth disparities by enabling investments in education, homeownership, or entrepreneurship later in life. At the policy level, expanding job training and workforce development programs that specifically target areas with high unemployment rates and barriers to entry can help ensure that economic opportunity is more widely shared. Addressing health disparities is also vital. Black Americans are disproportionately affected by chronic health conditions and face barriers to affordable, culturally competent healthcare. Improving access to healthcare services and preventive care, as well as expanding community health initiatives, will help reduce inequities in health outcomes. To drive meaningful change, a coalition of key stakeholders must be involved. Community leaders and organizations are critical because they understand local needs and can mobilize residents. Policymakers at local, state, and federal levels must champion and implement reforms that eliminate systemic barriers and promote equity. Educators and school administrators play a crucial role in improving educational outcomes and ensuring students have the support they need. Healthcare providers, nonprofit advocates, and business leaders must also be engaged to address economic and health challenges comprehensively. Finally, the voices of members of the African diaspora themselves must be at the center of decision-making processes because their lived experiences should guide the solutions designed to serve them. Sgt. Ware’s values of service, sacrifice, and bravery continue to inspire my belief that addressing these challenges requires courage, collaboration, and a commitment to lifting others up. By pursuing policies and reforms that foster educational equality, economic opportunity, and better health outcomes, we honor his legacy and work toward a more just and inclusive society for all.

I chose healthcare as my field of study because of a life-changing experience I shared with my grandfather when he underwent a heart transplant. Watching him struggle with heart disease and then seeing the medical team literally give him back his life showed me how powerful good healthcare can be. When my grandpa was at his lowest, unable to do basic things without pain or fatigue, the doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to help him recover. The moment he woke up after the transplant, his face lit up with hope again. That experience made me realize how much difference compassionate, skilled healthcare professionals can make in someone’s life — not just physically, but emotionally and mentally, too. Seeing my grandpa go from his lowest point to being able to enjoy everyday moments with family taught me that healthcare is about more than treatments — it’s about restoring dignity, giving people back their futures, and helping families stay together during difficult times. That moment changed me, because it made me want to be part of that powerful transformation for others. I didn’t just see doctors and nurses doing their jobs — I saw people bringing healing, comfort, and confidence to someone I love. What motivates me most about pursuing a career in health science is the idea that I can make that same kind of impact for others. I want to be someone who helps people rise from their darkest moments to experience new strength and health. I want to be the person families trust during stressful, uncertain times, and someone patients feel heard and cared for. I know that education is the foundation of becoming a competent healthcare professional — the more I learn, the better I can serve others. Education will give me the tools, knowledge, and skills to not only understand the science behind medical care but also to apply it in ways that truly improve lives. Pursuing healthcare is important to me because it blends my passion for science with my calling to serve others. It isn’t just a career choice — it’s a commitment to making life better for people when they need it most. I want to be part of the next generation of professionals who bring comfort, hope, and healing to patients. Just as the healthcare team helped my grandpa go from his lowest point to his best, I want to be someone who brings that kind of change and encouragement to others.

What motivates me to become successful and why pursuing an education is important to me comes from both personal experience and long-term goals that shape who I want to be. From a young age, I’ve watched the people around me work hard every day to build a stable life — parents juggling multiple responsibilities, teachers pushing me to do my best, and community members who gave time and encouragement when I needed it. These acts of support showed me that success doesn’t happen by chance; it comes through determination, resilience, and a willingness to keep going even when things get hard. I want to be successful not just so I can live comfortably, but so I can give back to others in the same way others have given to me. I believe success means using what you’ve learned and earned to make a positive impact on the world around you. My drive to pursue education is deeply connected to that motivation. Education is more than a requirement — it is a foundation for opportunity, growth, and stability. It equips individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to access careers that align with their passions and make a difference in their communities. Education opens doors that might otherwise remain closed and provides tools to solve real-world challenges. Without it, many talented and hardworking people struggle to reach their full potential. Studies and real-life examples show that higher education is linked not only to greater job prospects and financial stability but also to more confidence, critical thinking, and personal growth. Scholarships, in particular, make education more accessible by removing financial barriers that can limit a student’s ability to focus on learning and success. They provide crucial support so students can pursue their goals without being weighed down by excessive debt, and they motivate students to strive for excellence and achieve more. For me, education represents opportunity, empowerment, and the chance to leave a lasting legacy of growth and contribution for those who come after me. It allows me to break cycles of limitation and redefine what success means in my life. My commitment to education comes from a belief that it can change not only one person’s path but also the future of families and communities. I am driven to succeed so that I can help others succeed, too — because I understand firsthand how much a chance, a mentor, or a scholarship can change someone’s life. By pursuing my education with focus and purpose, I am taking steps toward a future where I can inspire, support, and uplift others, just as others have done for me.
    Summer Chester Memorial Scholarship
rom the earliest moments of my life, I have been surrounded by people who gave to me in ways both large and small, shaping who I am today and inspiring the way I interact with others. I grew up in a family where kindness was not just encouraged — it was expected, practiced, and passed forward. I remember when I was young and struggling with my confidence in school, my older cousin spent hours tutoring me after class, helping me read and understand material that once felt impossible. That time didn’t just help me academically; it showed me the value of patience, encouragement, and the impact of giving someone your time and attention. I have seen the way a simple act of kindness can create a ripple effect, encouraging others to act kindly in return — a philosophy often called “paying it forward.” In my community, I have personally experienced how meaningful it is when others give without expecting anything in return. Teachers, coaches, and even peers have offered support — whether through after-school help, lending a listening ear during stressful times, or cheering me on during competitions. Those experiences taught me that helping others isn’t a one-time act; it’s a mindset that builds a stronger, more compassionate community. I believe that giving back to the community is not only about large gestures but also about everyday actions that improve someone’s day and make them feel valued. It was these moments of support that inspired me to begin giving back in my own ways. I started volunteering with local community groups, helping at food drives and participating in service projects that supported families in need. I also began mentoring younger students academically and socially, using the same encouragement I once received so they could feel confident and supported. I learned through these experiences that everyone has something to offer, and even the smallest contributions — like spending time with someone or offering genuine encouragement — can make a significant difference. As I look to the future, I plan to continue paying it forward by dedicating more of my time and energy to initiatives that support education and uplift others. I hope to one day create or assist programs that provide tutoring, mentorship, and resources for students who face challenges similar to those I once encountered. I want to help build environments where people feel supported academically and personally, just as I have been supported throughout my life. In doing so, I aim not only to honor the kindness given to me but also to inspire others to continue the cycle of giving — creating a legacy of compassion and support that reaches far beyond a single individual.

    1. Personal Inspiration for Pursuing a Career in Nursing My inspiration for pursuing a career in nursing comes from my desire to help others during moments when they are most vulnerable. I have always been interested in healthcare because it combines science, problem-solving, and compassion. Nurses play a critical role in patient care, often spending the most time with patients and families. Knowing that I could be someone who provides comfort, reassurance, and support during difficult situations is what truly motivates me to pursue this career. A major influence on my decision to become a nurse was my grandpa. Watching him navigate health challenges showed me how important compassionate and attentive care truly is. During his medical experiences, I observed how nurses made a lasting impact through small but meaningful actions, such as explaining procedures, offering encouragement, and treating him with respect. Their presence brought comfort not only to him, but also to our family. Seeing the difference nurses made during that time helped me realize that nursing is more than just performing medical tasks; it is about building trust and forming genuine human connections. These experiences strengthened my desire to be the kind of nurse who listens, advocates, and cares for patients as individuals. I want to provide the same level of compassion and support that my grandpa received. Nursing also appeals to me because it offers opportunities to grow, specialize, and serve diverse communities. I believe my empathy, dedication, and strong work ethic will allow me to succeed in this field. Through nursing, I hope to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives and positively impact the families who depend on compassionate care. 2. Meaning of “Human Touch” and Its Impact on Patient Care To me, the phrase “human touch” represents compassion, empathy, and genuine connection between a healthcare provider and a patient. While medicine relies heavily on knowledge, technology, and procedures, human touch reminds us that patients are people first. It includes simple actions such as listening attentively, offering reassurance, showing patience, and treating individuals with dignity and respect. Human touch is not always physical; it can be conveyed through tone of voice, eye contact, and understanding body language. Human touch plays a critical role in patient care because it helps build trust and comfort. Many patients experience fear, anxiety, or uncertainty when receiving medical care. When a nurse takes the time to explain procedures clearly, acknowledge emotions, and show empathy, patients often feel more at ease. This sense of trust can improve communication, allowing patients to be more open about their symptoms and concerns, which ultimately leads to better care outcomes. In addition, human touch can positively impact a patient’s emotional and mental well-being. Feeling heard and valued can reduce stress and help patients feel supported during difficult situations. Small gestures, such as offering encouragement or simply being present, can make a significant difference in a patient’s experience. These moments remind patients that they are not alone and that their care team genuinely cares about their well-being. As a future nurse, I believe human touch is just as important as clinical skill. While medical knowledge is essential, compassion is what turns care into healing. By practicing empathy and kindness, nurses can create a supportive environment that promotes both physical and emotional recovery. Human touch strengthens the nurse-patient relationship and helps ensure that care is not only effective, but also meaningful.

Service has always been an important part of my values, and I believe giving back to others is both a responsibility and a privilege. While my humanitarian acts may not always be large or widely recognized, they are meaningful to me because they are rooted in compassion, consistency, and a genuine desire to help others. Through my actions, I strive to support people in my community and make a positive difference whenever possible. I currently engage in service by helping those around me in everyday but impactful ways. This includes supporting family members when they are in need, assisting peers with schoolwork, and being present for friends during difficult times. I understand that humanitarian service is not limited to formal volunteer programs; it also includes showing kindness, empathy, and responsibility in daily life. These experiences have taught me the importance of listening, patience, and being dependable—qualities that are essential when serving others. Balancing school, a part-time job, and personal responsibilities has also strengthened my commitment to service. Working while attending school has allowed me to better understand the challenges many individuals and families face, including financial stress and limited resources. This awareness has deepened my empathy and reinforced my desire to help others who may be struggling. Even through small actions, such as offering encouragement or assistance, I aim to contribute positively to my community. My educational goals will allow me to expand my ability to serve others in more meaningful and impactful ways. I plan to pursue a career in nursing, a profession that is centered on service, compassion, and advocacy. Through my education, I will gain the medical knowledge and practical skills needed to care for patients during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. As a nurse, I want to provide not only quality healthcare but also emotional support, reassurance, and clear communication to patients and their families. In the future, I hope to give back to my community by working in healthcare settings that serve diverse and underserved populations. I am particularly interested in participating in community health outreach, education programs, and preventative care initiatives. By educating individuals about their health and helping them access care, I believe I can contribute to improving overall community well-being. Continuing my education beyond entry-level nursing will further expand my ability to lead, advocate, and serve. Overall, my commitment to humanitarian service is driven by empathy, responsibility, and a desire to help others succeed. Through education, dedication, and continued service, I plan to give back to my community in lasting and meaningful ways.
    Scorenavigator Financial Literacy Scholarship
My personal experiences with finances and financial education have taught me that managing money is a skill that must be learned through both education and real-life experience. While I was not always formally taught financial literacy at a young age, I gained valuable knowledge through everyday responsibilities, family experiences, and working a part-time job. These experiences helped shape my understanding of budgeting, saving, and planning for the future. Working a part-time job has had the greatest impact on my financial awareness. Earning my own income taught me the true value of money and the effort required to earn it. I learned how quickly money can be spent without a plan and why it is important to budget carefully. Managing my paycheck required me to prioritize needs over wants, set savings goals, and plan ahead for school-related expenses. Balancing work with academic responsibilities also strengthened my time-management skills and taught me accountability, discipline, and responsibility. Through my experiences, I became more aware of the importance of financial education, especially as I prepare for higher education. Understanding scholarships, financial aid, and responsible borrowing has shown me how important it is to make informed decisions early. I plan to apply what I learn by minimizing unnecessary debt, creating realistic budgets, and managing my finances wisely while continuing my education. Being financially prepared will allow me to focus more on my academic goals without the constant stress of financial uncertainty. In the future, I plan to use financial education to build long-term stability and independence. I want to continue developing healthy financial habits such as saving consistently, building an emergency fund, and learning how to manage credit responsibly. I also plan to educate myself on investing and long-term financial planning so I can make informed decisions that support my future career and personal goals. These skills will help me create financial security and prepare for major life responsibilities. Beyond my own future, I hope to use my financial knowledge to positively impact others. Many young people struggle with money management due to a lack of education or guidance. By sharing what I have learned with peers, family members, or future coworkers, I hope to encourage responsible financial habits and awareness. Financial education empowers individuals to make better choices and avoid common financial struggles. Overall, my experiences with finances—especially working a part-time job—have taught me the importance of responsibility, planning, and lifelong learning. By continuing to develop my financial knowledge and applying it intentionally, I am confident that I can build a secure future and use these skills to make thoughtful, informed decisions throughout my life.

I plan to use my education to make the world a better place by pursuing a career in nursing and dedicating myself to serving others through compassionate, ethical, and patient-centered care. Education is a powerful tool that allows individuals to create change, and I believe that by gaining a strong academic foundation in healthcare, I can positively impact the lives of many people. As a nurse, I want to be someone who not only provides medical care but also offers comfort, understanding, and advocacy to patients during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Many patients feel overwhelmed by medical information or intimidated within healthcare settings, and I hope to bridge that gap by communicating clearly and treating every patient with dignity and respect. Through my education, I also plan to contribute to my community by promoting health education and preventative care. I believe that improving health literacy can reduce long-term health issues and empower individuals to make informed decisions about their well-being. By working in underserved or high-need areas, I hope to help reduce healthcare disparities and ensure that quality care is accessible to all. Continuing my education beyond entry-level nursing will allow me to expand my skills and increase the scope of my impact, whether through advanced practice, leadership, or community outreach. My family and I have overcome adversity that has shaped my character and strengthened my determination. Growing up in a military-connected environment meant facing frequent changes, long periods of uncertainty, and emotional challenges related to separation and adjustment. These experiences were not always easy, but they taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of perseverance. Watching my family remain strong and supportive through difficult circumstances showed me the value of teamwork, sacrifice, and commitment. There were also times when balancing school, responsibilities at home, and emotional stress felt overwhelming. These challenges forced me to develop discipline, strong time-management skills, and self-motivation. Instead of allowing adversity to discourage me, I learned to use it as motivation to work harder and remain focused on my goals. Each obstacle I faced reinforced my belief that success comes from persistence and a willingness to grow. These experiences have inspired my desire to help others who may be facing their own struggles. By using my education to serve others in the healthcare field, I hope to turn adversity into purpose. I am committed to using the opportunities provided by higher education to create positive change, uplift my community, and make a meaningful difference in the world.

My educational journey in the United States has introduced me to diverse perspectives, rigorous academic environments, and opportunities for growth that continually motivate me to advance toward a meaningful career. One of the most significant challenges I have faced has been learning to balance academic responsibilities with personal and family obligations. At times, the weight of managing coursework alongside these commitments felt overwhelming, and moments of self-doubt threatened my motivation. Yet, these struggles became lessons in discipline, time management, and the importance of seeking guidance and support when needed. I came to understand that perseverance is an essential ingredient in achieving success, and that setbacks do not define us—our response to them does. By overcoming these difficulties, I strengthened my confidence, reinforced my commitment to my goals, and developed resilience that will serve me well in the future. I am a hardworking, determined, and compassionate student who believes that challenges help shape who we become. Throughout my life, I have learned that success is not defined by how easy the journey is, but by how you respond when obstacles arise. The experiences my family and I have faced have played a major role in shaping my values, work ethic, and desire to make a positive impact on the world. Growing up in a military-connected family brought many trials and tribulations. Frequent moves, long periods of separation, and constant uncertainty were part of our everyday life. These experiences were difficult, especially during important moments when loved ones were away, but they taught my family the importance of resilience, adaptability, and unity. Watching my family support one another during these times showed me what true strength looks like. It also taught me the value of service, sacrifice, and perseverance. There were moments when balancing school, family responsibilities, and emotional stress felt overwhelming. At times, I had to grow up faster than expected, learning how to manage my time, stay organized, and remain focused on my goals despite distractions and challenges. Instead of letting these struggles hold me back, I used them as motivation. I learned how to push forward even when situations felt uncertain, and I discovered the importance of staying committed and disciplined. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career where I can help others during difficult times. I plan to become a nurse so I can provide compassionate, respectful, and patient-centered care. Nursing allows me to combine my interest in science with my desire to serve others. I want to be a healthcare professional who listens to patients, explains information clearly, and advocates for those who may not have a voice. My goal is to make people feel supported and understood when they are at their most vulnerable. Beyond my career, I plan to make a positive impact through community involvement and service. I want to participate in health education programs, volunteer in underserved areas, and promote wellness within my community. I believe even small acts of kindness and service can create meaningful change. Overall, the trials my family and I experienced taught me resilience, empathy, and determination. These lessons have shaped who I am today and continue to motivate me to give back. I am committed to using my education, experiences, and compassion to make a positive difference in the world and to serve others with purpose and integrity.

My career goal is to become a nurse who provides compassionate, safe, and patient-centered care. I plan to begin my career as a registered nurse, where I can build strong clinical skills and gain experience working directly with patients. As I continue my education, I hope to advance my career by becoming a travel nurse or eventually a nurse anesthesiologist. Nursing appeals to me because it combines science, critical thinking, and human connection. Nurses are often the healthcare professionals patients interact with the most, and I want to be someone patients can trust and feel comfortable with during difficult times. I plan to make a difference in my community by being an advocate for my patients. Many people struggle to understand medical terms, diagnoses, or treatment plans, which can make healthcare feel overwhelming. As a nurse, I want to take the time to explain information clearly and ensure patients feel heard and respected. I am especially interested in working with underserved populations who may have limited access to healthcare. By providing education, support, and compassionate care, I hope to help improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare disparities in my community. In addition to working in hospitals or clinical settings, I plan to give back through community outreach. This includes participating in health education programs, volunteering at clinics, and supporting public health initiatives. I believe nurses play a key role not only in treating illness but also in preventing disease and promoting overall wellness. By being actively involved in my community, I can help encourage healthier lifestyles and empower individuals to take charge of their health. I also have a strong connection to the military, which has had a significant impact on my life. Being part of a military-connected community has taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of service. I have seen firsthand the sacrifices made by service members and their families, which has shaped my desire to pursue a career focused on helping others. The military environment has also taught me the value of teamwork, adaptability, and remaining calm under pressure—skills that are essential in nursing. My ultimate goal is to become a compassionate and dedicated nurse who not only delivers exceptional medical care but also makes a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of the patients I serve. I aspire to provide care that goes beyond treating physical ailments, offering emotional support and comfort to individuals and their families during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.

I believe motivated and high-achieving students from disadvantaged backgrounds deserve opportunities such as scholarships or grants because many of us have the drive and potential to succeed, but not always the resources to get there. Financial hardship, family circumstances, or lack of support can make education seem out of reach, yet these obstacles often push us to work harder and stay determined. Scholarships and grants provide more than just financial help—they provide hope, opportunity, and a chance to prove what we are capable of achieving. In my own life, I have faced challenges that shaped who I am today. My family has not always had the financial means to make things easy, and I have had to learn responsibility and independence early on. I also watched my grandpa go through a heart transplant, which was one of the hardest experiences my family ever faced. Seeing him in the hospital opened my eyes to how fragile life can be, but it also inspired me to want to pursue nursing. The compassion and care the medical team gave him showed me the impact that healthcare workers can have, and it made me determined to follow that path. At the same time, I have pushed myself academically. While still in high school, I have been taking dual enrollment classes to earn my associate’s degree, which has required me to balance school, college-level coursework, and other responsibilities. It has not been easy, but it has taught me discipline, time management, and the importance of hard work. Even when things were stressful, I stayed committed to my goals because I knew education was the key to building the future I want. Support through this grant would help me continue moving forward without the heavy burden of financial stress. It would allow me to focus fully on my studies, participate in opportunities that will prepare me for my career, and continue working toward becoming a nurse. My goal is to specialize as a travel nurse or nurse anesthesiologist, so I can use my skills to help patients in need while also giving back to communities that often lack healthcare resources. I know that success is not given—it is earned through hard work, determination, and faith. I believe my experiences and commitment to achieving my goals show that I am ready to take advantage of every opportunity given to me. With the support of this grant, I can continue to rise above obstacles, pursue my education, and turn my dreams of helping others into reality.

Hello, My name is Jacoby Martinez, and I am a senior at Copperas Cove High School, located in Copperas Cove, Texas, approximately two hours from Dallas. I intend to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas, but I am also considering other options, such as Texas A&M and the University of Texas at Austin. My primary goal is to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing, which will serve as a foundation for my future career in nursing school. I am determined to enter the healthcare field and make a difference in the lives of others through compassionate and dedicated patient care. Nursing is a passion of mine. I have always been drawn to helping and caring for others. It brings me immense satisfaction to make a positive impact and contribute to society. Throughout my high school years, I have gained a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health, not only for my well-being but also for the people around me. One of the most important lessons I have learned about mental health comes from watching my mother struggle with depression. Seeing her battle through difficult times has taught me how vital it is to be patient, empathetic, and supportive of those fighting silent battles. I’ve seen how even a small act of kindness can brighten someone’s day when they are dealing with emotional struggles. Being by my mother’s side during her hardest moments made me realize that nurses don’t just treat physical illnesses; they also play a big role in emotional healing. This experience has strengthened my commitment to becoming a nurse who cares for patients in every way, not just physically, but emotionally as well. I want to be a nurse who listens, understands, and advocates for mental health awareness in healthcare settings. Many patients feel scared or anxious when dealing with health issues, and I want to be the person who helps them feel seen, heard, and cared for. In addition, my grandfather’s heart transplant had a huge influence on my career choice. I spent countless hours with him in the ICU, watching the nurses care for him with such compassion and professionalism. They didn’t just treat his medical needs; they supported our family, explained procedures, and offered comfort when we needed it the most. Being in that environment showed me the true heart of nursing and inspired me to follow this path. I want to provide that same level of care to my future patients and their families. With these personal experiences, I have developed a strong sense of empathy, patience, and a desire to advocate for both physical and mental health in my nursing career. I am excited to continue my education and take the next steps toward becoming a nurse who truly makes a difference in people’s lives, no matter how big or small the moment may be.

I am passionate about become a nurse because I've always been concerned with helping others, but it actually came true when my grandpa underwent a heart transplant. I spent a lot of time with him in the ICU, and that really transformed my life. I could see the nurses work on him when he was at his weakest. They didn't treat him like a patient—treat him as a person. They talked to him, talked to my family, and took care of us as well. The way they worked with such care and patience enlightened me to the worth of nurses, and that's when I realized this is what I'm supposed to do with my life. Being with my grandpa in the ICU wasn't easy. There were many scary moments, but the nurses were always around. They were my heroes because they were calm and assertive even when things were tough. They showed me that nursing is about more than dispensing medication or reading charts. It's about being with people at their weakest. That's the type of nurse I'd like to be. I would like to be the person that patients and families can count on when they need someone to assist them. As a nurse, I would want to make a difference by giving every patient the same attention and care that I saw those ICU nurses give my grandfather. I would want to be hands-on, working with people, and keeping them safe and listened to. I also want to keep learning as much as I can so that I can be the best for my patients. Nursing is not a job you ever stop learning in, and I am happy to take on that challenge. One of the things I hope to do is by making sure patients and families understand what is going on. When my grandfather was in the hospital, there were times that we were confused or did not have a clue what was coming next. The nurses who took the time to make us aware of what was going on were lifelines. I hope to be one of those nurses who makes sure that explanations are given and no one is left uninformed. In the future, I would like to be either a critical care nurse or, ideally, a nurse anesthesiologist. Wherever I may end up, however, my top aspiration is to be a compassionate nurse. I want patients to remember me because I made them feel heard, seen, and loved. My experience with my grandfather taught me the power of excellent nursing, and I would like to spend my career giving the same care to others.

To me, “Black excellence” is more than a phrase—it’s a way of living. It’s about striving for greatness in everything you do, no matter what obstacles or expectations are placed in your path. It means breaking barriers, defying stereotypes, and showing the world that Black people can and will achieve greatness in every field—whether it’s in academics, the arts, sports, leadership, or service. Black excellence means owning your identity with pride, embracing your roots, and pushing forward to leave a legacy that uplifts future generations. In my everyday life, I do my best to embody Black excellence through my actions, my goals, and my attitude. I’m currently a student at Copperas Cove High School, where I maintain a strong academic record and challenge myself to grow. I consider myself a fast learner who brings a positive attitude into every class. I don’t just want to do well for myself—I want to show others that success is possible through hard work, discipline, and faith in yourself. I’m also a proud member of the Copperas Cove High School band. Being in the band has taught me the value of commitment, teamwork, and discipline. We practice regularly, and every performance reflects the effort we’ve put in together. As a band member, I represent not just myself but a group of people working toward a common goal. That responsibility motivates me to give my best, even when I’m tired or stressed. That’s a part of Black excellence—doing the hard work even when no one is watching. Outside of school, I contribute to my family by helping take care of my younger relatives. I’m often the babysitter of the family, which has helped me build patience, leadership, and a sense of responsibility. I see being a role model for my younger siblings and cousins as part of my personal mission. I want them to grow up knowing that they can dream big, and that those dreams are valid. By setting a good example, I hope to inspire them to believe in their worth and never settle for less. I’ve also participated in gymnastics, which helped me grow mentally and physically. Gymnastics taught me resilience, focus, and how to push past my comfort zone. Every fall or missed move became a lesson in perseverance. That same mindset carries into how I approach life: when I fall, I get back up stronger. Black excellence to me means walking with pride, not arrogance; humility, not fear. It means striving for more while remembering the shoulders we stand on. It’s about showing up with strength, love, and determination, not just for yourself, but for your community and the next generation. Every day, in big ways and small, I try to live in a way that honors the legacy of Black excellence—by learning, leading, loving, and always reaching higher.
