My name is Jacobo Lopez. I am the son of Colombian immigrants who came to the United States in search of better opportunities. Despite their many sacrifices, my parents never had the chance to pursue higher education. Their journey has been rough, but they have taught me the importance of perseverance and hard work. These values have guided me through challenges, shaping my path and feeding my drive to chase my dreams.
Growing up, soccer was more than just a sport to me. However, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), a heart condition that caused my heart to race uncontrollably at times. The diagnosis was a shock, especially for someone as young and active as I was. But rather than letting it define me, I confronted it head-on. I underwent treatment and learned to manage my condition, proving to myself that I could overcome even the most life-threatening obstacles.
Just as I began to continue my athletic career, another health issue emerged, forcing me to make one of the hardest decisions of my life: to quit soccer. However, in that loss, I discovered a new passion: videography. With the time I once dedicated to soccer, I began exploring the world through a camera lens. What started as a hobby quickly grew into something much more significant.
Since my sophomore year, I’ve been the main sports videographer and social media content creator, capturing the vibrant athletic spirit of high school sports across Texas. My work goes beyond documenting games; I tell the stories of athletes, schools, and communities, highlighting the dedication, teamwork, and passion that define high school sports.
Recognizing my new passion, I decided to start my videography business, JL Studios @jlstudioz
Through collaborations with organizations like Texas Football Life, Dave Campbell, Damian Williams, QB trainer for Dak Prescott, and the Post Production Camp at the University of Texas at Austin, where I took part last summer, I’ve developed my skills in sports photography and videography, honing an eye for the moments that matter. My experience as a freelancer has taught me to adapt quickly and creatively to various environments, ensuring I deliver high-quality content that resonates with viewers. Also, being fully bilingual in Spanish and English allows me to connect with my community.
As a high school student, I envision myself capturing significant college athletic moments and promoting campus events, initiatives, and student achievements through dynamic visual storytelling, creating engaging content that showcases the vibrant campus life.
I’m excited about the opportunity to join a team that values culture, diversity, and excellence in athletics, and I look forward to eventually graduating from the Sports Broadcasting Program.
My dream now is to take this passion to the next level by attending College, where I aspire to be a creative digital media and content creator for sports. In many ways, my journey has been about turning challenges into opportunities. My parents' sacrifices, my battle with SVT, and the difficult decision to quit soccer have all shaped who I am today. They have taught me that while life may present obstacles, it offers countless opportunities to grow, adapt, and find new paths.
In a recent interview with NBC News, I had the incredible opportunity to share my journey and showcase the skills I’ve developed in sports videography. Being recognized for my talents reaffirmed my passion for capturing the energy and emotion of sports through digital media. This experience has only fueled my desire to take my passion to the next level by pursuing a degree in creative digital media.
