I. Introduction From the moment I started learning about children who faced unique learning challenges, I discovered that special education would be my career path. There is something that screams motivation about helping children who have been underestimated, misunderstood, or overlooked by their peers, teachers, and even their family to discover their voice and dreams. Special education is my path because it allows me to speak for students who may not always be able to advocate for themselves. It allows me to understand where every child is at in their academic journey and guide them forward with patience, creativity, and genuine love. Children that require special education tend to see school in a way that is not meant for them. I believe every child deserves not only access to good education, but access to being happy about learning. I see the position of being a special education teacher as both inspiring and empowering. I want to be that teacher who helps students see their strengths in a world that may focus too much on their challenges. I want to be the person who helps these students feel seen by everyone around them. This profession also calls me because of its demand for compassion, adaptability, and purpose. Not every student in the realm of special education is the same. In other words, everyone is different, and that's what excites me about teaching in this realm of education. I want to enter the classroom every day knowing I will be the one teaching students how to learn, but also be the one learning alongside my students. There's an opportunity for students and teachers to grow together, which is why special education is a great place for me to use my creativity, my empathy, and my desire to make a real difference in the education system. II. The Purpose of Teaching In professor Harold Bloom's quote, “The purpose of teaching is to bring the student to his or her sense of his or her own presence.”, Bloom suggests that education is not merely about transferring knowledge, but about awakening self-awareness in the student. To experience one’s "own presence" is another way to say being able to recognize one’s individuality, worth, potential, and capability. It’s about helping students understand that they matter just as much as anyone else in this world. When taking special education into consideration, this quote goes even deeper. Many students with disabilities are often times taught about what they cannot do. They are stuck into categories, told what support they need, but rarely encouraged to explore who they are while still fitting in with everyone else in the classroom. For me, I want to guide students to see themselves as individuals with high capabilities, rather than comparing themselves to others in feeling insecure about their opportunities. Helping a child come to their “own presence” means creating a classroom environment where each student feels safe, seen, and valued. It means honoring their communication styles, learning preferences, emotional needs, and cultural identities. It also means setting up opportunities where they can succeed and then feel that success as the years go by. I will do this by providing individualized instruction that builds on each student’s strengths. I will celebrate effort over perfection. I will listen deeply, ask questions that make students feel comfortable expressing themselves, as well as help students name their feelings, set goals, and track their own growth, while still encouraging them that they are important and capable of many things. III. Fairy Tale: “The Teacher and the Light” Once upon a time, in a land where learning looked like nothing straight lines and square boxes, there was a teacher named Star. Star had traveled through many paths before discovering what she ultimately wanted to do: help children who didn’t fit inside the boxes. In this kingdom, some called them “special,” and others didn’t know what to call them at all. But Star saw them for who they truly were: gifted in their own ways, and glowing with a hidden light. One day, Star heard of a sacred object lost to time — the Mirror of Light. It was said that anyone who investigated this light would see not just their reflection, but their deepest worth. The problem was the mirror could only be activated by someone who believed in others more than in themselves. So, Star set off on a journey. Along the way, she met a boy who spoke in pictures instead of words, a girl who danced instead of wrote, and a child who had forgotten how to smile. Star listened to them, applauded them, and learned their languages. She taught them to read the stars, solve riddles, and play music with the wind. She carried their laughter and tears with her like treasures. Finally, Star reached the cave where the Mirror of Light had been hidden. It was dusty and dim, and many had come before her and failed to light it. But when Star stood before it and thought of all the children she had helped, the mirror glowed with warmth. Each of the students Star had helped appeared behind her. One by one, they looked into the mirror and gasped. “I see me,” whispered the boy. “And I matter,” said the girl. “I’m not broken,” said the child who had forgotten how to smile. And from that day on, the kingdom began to change. Classrooms grew round instead of square. Teachers began to listen before they spoke. And every child had a chance to find their own mirror out of presence. And Star? She kept teaching, knowing that her greatest magic was not in spells, but in love, patience, and the belief that every child was worthy of being seen. IV. Conclusion I want the special education pathway to be my career because I believe in the power of students who feel like they could be in need of special support.
