I am currently enrolled as a full-time student at Perry Technical Institute in Sunnyside, WA, pursuing a career in construction. Before beginning this journey, I was working full-time as a Correctional Officer for Coyote Ridge Correction Center in Connell, WA. I was working there for five and a half years, it was a stable job with great pay, however, I began to feel trapped. In late 2024, I experienced a powerful awakening. One day the weight of my routine hit me: my job felt like a dead-end, unfulfilling paycheck grind. The thought of spending decades in the prison environment became unbearable. I realized that I wanted more than just security, I wanted purpose and the opportunity to build something of my own. I was nervous to say the least, at 27 years old, venturing out to the unknown with almost no experience in construction besides knowledge of minor tools, I made the scary decision to leave my job and return to school. The transition was not easy. Leaving a reliable position after five and a half years brought real fear. I tried exploring other options, such as graveyard and on call, but nothing aligned with my goal of attending school full-time. Ultimately, I knew I had to quit. My last day at Coyote Ridge Correction Center was December 30th, 2025, and classes started at Perry Tech on January 5th, 2026. In the short year leading up to the start of class, I saved as much as I could, knowing I would not have a job for the first quarter. The financial uncertainty was alarming, and self-doubt crept in daily. I had no blueprint for success in this new field. Despite the nerves, I kept reminding myself: It’s now or never. I had been unhappy for too long, and I knew I would figure it out. New things take time to learn, and getting discouraged would only hold me back. Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. That mindset helped carry me through the first couple of weeks at school, where everything felt foreign and overwhelming. Today I am proud of the courage it took to make this leap. My goal is to complete the program and eventually open my own business specializing in finishing work such as trim, cabinetry, and custom projects that help transform houses into homes. This path not only teaches me a new skill but also resilience and self-belief. When I look back, I see that leaving a comfortable but unfulfilling job was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’m excited for what the future holds and grateful for the opportunity to build the life I truly want.
