My life goals is to be involved in Business Management in some way. I love taking a leadership role in anything I do and I push myself to achieve those high expectations. I am a driven and motivated worker in both my sport of golf and in my academics. I have had a job since the 8th grade for the same employer, our local golf course in Fernley, Nevada. In my free time I train physically and mentally for my golf game. I am family oriented and have the vision and resilience to go far in life. I have grown up in a small town in Fernley, Nevada. Both my parents have also grown up in Northern Nevada and have instilled in me the importance of hard work and dedication to what you love. My dream goal would be to make the PGA one day and become a professional golfer.

My name is Jacob Holmes. I have grown up in Fernley, NV my entire life. I attended Cottonwood Elementary, Fernley Intermediate, Silverland Middle, Fernley High School, and now I am a sophomore at Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon.. Throughout all my years from Kindergarten and up I have always been very involved in extracurricular activities and giving back to the communities, along with being a member of the boys and girls clubs. In elementary school I was part of the running club, I also won the 4th grade cabbage growing national contest and was awarded a savings bond I am planning on using for college funds. Moreover, I was awarded the Healthy Lifestyles Award through Boys and Girls Club and won top honors for all of Northern Nevada and gave a speech at the Peppermill in front of hundreds of donors and families when I was only 7 years old. When I attended Fernley Intermediate I helped out with the Special Olympics, participated in basketball, cross country, and made it into the HEX championship for lyon county 6th to 8th graders. Additionally, I was very involved in our local BMX track. I would donate around 5 hours each week on track maintenance and helping out new riders and with the racing days on the weekends. When I entered Silverland Middle school I worked hard and was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society and was elected the Historian. As being the Historian I had to give up many lunches to work with the advisor on many different projects, assist with dances, and assemblies. I also was invited to the 4.0 dinner at Silverland with my parents where we were served a wonderful dinner and had a few motivational guest speakers. At the end of eighth grade was when I got my first job, working at the local golf course as a cart attendant. I have continued to hold a job working at various golf courses. When I entered Fernley High School it was during COVID and so many sports and other programs were not running like they had in the past. I did however get into the Leadership program and stayed in that program for 2 years helping with many events and community service activities such as cleaning up the cemeteries, decorating the town for homecoming and more. In my junior year I was honored to participate in a Christian Mission to Costa Rica where we spent two weeks helping to build an additional church, hold outreach programs for the youth and spend time learning the culture and making positive impacts in their communities. While attending Bushnell University as a freshman and as a sophomore I have done 20 hours of volunteerism, assisting in moving elderly into new homes, building tiny homes for the community, working concessions and donating the proceeds to local agencies in need, handing out food to those in need and cleaning up areas around the community. These experiences have shown me the importance of being a leader and how that leadership can impact your community. These are special moments that have opened my eyes to challenges people face day to day and has allowed me to grow as a leader and as an individual because I see how much these acts of kindness mean for those in need.

By choosing to attend Bushnell University, a Christian University, I have been surrounded by those who live with faith each day. This experience has grounded me in my own beliefs and motivated me to help others in our community. We have chapel class weekly and bible studies, all of which allow for each student to express and dive deeper into their own relationships with Christ. My experiences have allowed me to be more open and connected to my peers, professors and the community around the university. I have been able to help those in need by giving back to those who need it the most. The kindness and empathy felt day to day allows me to feel part of a great cause and breaks down barriers I once felt. I have made life long friendships and met countless speakers who preach the word of Christ. Through their guidance I have become even more motivated to become the best man I can be. The safety felt on campus is wonderful and they allow you to express yourself with out judgements. I am majoring in Business and have always dreamed of entrepreneurship. I have always been a leader and have chosen paths that were not always the easiest but have pushed me to experience and achieve goals I have set. I have worked since the age of 14 and now at the age of 20 I know the value of hard work and dedication. Sacrifice and having a larger goal in mind that takes time to accomplish is something I have focused on for years. I am a collegiate athlete playing golf. Through the ups and downs and countless hours of practice and early morning trainings I have grown to thrive under pressure and to be able to count on myself and those I surround myself with knowing God is always with me guiding me towards my goals and there when needed in times of hardships. I have started side businesses like car detailing, worked on my grandfathers horse ranch, done landscaping, window washing and more. All of these experiences along with continuing my job at golf courses has molded my perspectives on my future. My time in Costa Rica serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ was such a meaningful and fulfilling experience. We assisted the local church in expansion projects. Participated in youth outreach programs and immersed ourself in the local community. My times at church camp in California with no cell phones or devices to distract us was also some of the best times I have had. Meeting others with similar beliefs and getting to be yourself with out judgments was wonderful. I love business and I know I can make a difference for the communities I work. Bringing in a sense of faith will only enhance this career.

Why I chose Business as my major stems from my fierce independence and my leadership abilities. I also like to work with people and I am motivated through my hard work and high expectations. I think Business degrees offer many opportunities as to different specialties one can go into such as finance, entrepreneurship, accounting and more. I am organized and detail oriented. I can follow directions and procedures, yet I can also problem solve and be creative. I have continued to worked since the 8th grade at my city’s golf course. Some mornings my shift would start at 5 am. I have proven myself to be a reliable hard worker. I am an avid golfer winning the Nevada state title as a team and as an individual my senior year and then moved on to the collegiate level at Bushnell University. I would love to have a niche in the golf industry that would allow me to use my Business/entrepreneurial skills. As I look at who I am and who I would be as a college student, I see myself as a dedicated leader who has the self discipline and drive to succeed in future goals. My hunger and drive stems from my upbringing, family history, and internal drive to succeed and reach my full potential. This scholarship would allow me to take on less financial debt as the tuition, housing, food, and sports costs adds up and I have to take out school loans to cover the expenses. If awarded this scholarship it can allow more time for me to spend on my studies working towards my future goals in life.

The loss of my hero at the age of 7 impacted my life in ways I never fully realized until I was older. My papa was 61 when he was diagnosed with tongue cancer. This started the battle that ended on August 18th 2013 when he passed from throat cancer at the age of 62. My papa was the one who supported me through all my ups and downs. He was my biggest fan and was always the first one there to cheer me on in any sport or activity. He was the loudest fan at little league, BMX racing and soccer. I was a wild youngster and at times too much for my parents to handle, however my papa was there in a flash if I need to get away and spend the night. We would have great times going to the skate parks, play ball in the backyard or watching movies and getting snacks at the local store down the street. I have memories of catching my first Rainbow Trout in the Sierra Mountains, little did I understand at that age that he was battling for his life during that trip. He was in pain and very sick, but he still took me out helped me bait my hook and I will never forget reeling in that fish. He showed me how to clean it and fry it up. My papa was the baby of 8 and was one of the most kindest empathetic people I have ever known. He believed in family, being selfless and always supporting those you love and those who needed it. He was patient and forgiving and someone I strive to become as I am growing into adulthood. He was one of the hardest workers who never complained. He gave everything to his family and I am so lucky to have him in my life. As I look back now and see how far I have come I know he would be my biggest fan and would be beaming with joy seeing me fulfill a dream of being a collegiate golfer in Eugene, Oregon, a place he loved to visit to watch the Ducks play football. He taught me to be optimistic and live life to the fullest taking every opportunity set out in front of me. He lived life this way and had great stories of his travels through Central and South America and how those adventures made him a more understanding and caring person. His last outing before he passed was to travel to Lake Tahoe to watch me BMX race for a big state title. He was weak and sick, but told me he would not miss it for the world. I won that race and I remember he said , "I knew you could do it buddy", we had pizza and ten days later he was gone. He will always be in my heart and I treasure each moment we had together. When times are tough and I am going through a hard time I think of him and how proud he would be to see who I have become, someone who is a leader, self-driven and loves his community and family whole heartedly.
Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
As I look at who I am and who I would continue to be as a college student, I see myself as a dedicated leader who has the self discipline and drive to succeed in future goals. My determination and resilience stems from my upbringing and my natural instinct to be a leader. My parents have instilled in me from a young boy to hold yourself to high expectations, to be a leader not a follower and to never give up on my dreams. I am extremely dedicated to my own goals whether it be in academics, my job, or my love of the game of golf. Seeing my hard work and hours of practice pay off has only excelled my drive and determination to make this dream a reality. I strive under pressure and I am also humbled by the sport of golf. I was named the 3A Northern Nevada MVP as a junior and again as a senior for my Varsity Golf team. Our team this year also won 3A state for Boys Golf, a first for Fernley High. I was also the number one State individual champion at State this year as a senior. I was a leader and lead by example on the golf team and extended that into my academics receiving a 4.15 GPA and graduating Summa Cum Lade. I also am driven by responsibility as I have held a job from the age of 14 working for golf courses and being a ranch hand. Being a leaders is not always easy and can be lonely at times, by choosing paths that are not easy and having the determination to achieve a goal takes time and sacrifice. There have been many times where I have been the only one to miss a party or to wake up early for my job or trainings. This has shaped who I am today. I know I can rely on myself and have built friendships with those who are on the road to greatness. Leadership comes with responsibilities and accountability. My mental strength and high personal expectations helps to keep me moving towards my goals in life. I also want to be a leader for my younger sister who is in high school. She looks up to me and I know she views me as an example to follow. I push her to be a leader and do what is right and through those difficulties, success and failures she will come out as a better stronger person. I love my family, my community back home and here at college and my plans are to be someone others can look to for motivation and support.

If I were to receive this scholarship I would be beyond grateful. My parents have spent their savings to give me every opportunity in my sports programs along with a mission trip to Costa Rica to help build a church with my youth group. The funds would help with housing, food, travel, tuition and equipment needed to attend Bushnell University and to continue playing golf. The stress of taking out huge loans would not be something looming over me as I progressed through college. I know the value of a dollar and what it takes to earn the money needed to pay for college as I have worked a steady job since the age of 14 to build my savings. I would be so appreciative of any scholarships and each and every dollar would be put to use to further both my sport and my academic careers. I am continuing my major in Business, Marketing in the Service Industry at Bushnell University and will be a junior next year as well as continuing to be a part of their collegiate golf program.

Impacting others and having a positive effect on my surroundings is something I have continually strived to do within my community and around the world. My name is Jacob Holmes and I am currently a collegiate athlete attending the University of Bushnell in Oregon. Prior to my time in college I was involved in various programs during my youth which allowed me to impact our local communities and communities around the world. I was the historian of the Honor Society program where I assisted in many volunteer functions both within school and out of school. I volunteers many hours assisting in school events and assemblies, worked on weekends cleaning up the cemetery in my town, and involving community businesses to get connected to the schools. I also was an expert BMX racer and volunteered 10 or more hours a week cleaning up, maintaining and assisting in race days and clinics for the youth of our community and those who would travel to our small rural town in Northern Nevada. I was a member of the leadership program which gave back to the community by running sports concessions, decorating the town for homecoming, cleaning up parks and schools and organizing assemblies and fund raisers. When I was 16 I traveled to Costa Rica for two weeks to assist in a mission where we helped to build an addition to a church in a small community. We held many outreach activities to engage the families of the town and to support them. I have also spent 20 plus hours during my college years volunteering at assisted living centers helping the elderly move into new homes, along with building tiny houses for those in need within the Oregon community. Additionally, I have made food bags to hand out and worked in a food kitchen. I have always enjoyed helping others and I am a born leader. I am drawn to those in need and it gives me joy and happiness to help when and where I am able to. I enjoy sports and have always loved coaching young athletes such as in golf, BMX, and soccer. Being busy and making positive memories where I am is what makes my life fulfilled. Making life long connections like those I made during my time in Costa Rica will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope one day to return to my home town where I can continue doing impactful things for my community.

Everyone goes through difficult times in their lives. When thinking about a time I faced a hard barrier I think about COVID. I was in the last semester of my 8th grade year and school was shut down and we went to online learning. As a kid used to being around my friends, family and classmates this was a big change for me. I missed out on sports that year and also my graduation. My mom as a teacher herself did her best to keep my sister and I on track and busy with fun lessons in art like painting and tie dyeing various things. I am the type of learner who loves in person hands-on learning, so having to sit at my desk and look at a computer screen for hours was not what I wanted or how I learned best. I did what I needed to do, but found refuge in getting my first job at our local golf course as a cart attendant. By getting this job I was able to leave my home and be around people outside doing something that I truly love, golf. This is where my live made a pivotal change. I had previously been a sponsored BMX racer traveling the country, yet COVID put a stop to racing. As a family we came to the decision to stop BMX as there were only a couple tracks open in states far away from Nevada. I then put all my focus on my golf game. I believe this new found passion was meant to be. I would spend hours at the course to settle my mind and stay busy during this depression time in my life. When I entered my freshman year many sports were not operating as they used to due to the new rules dealing with the disease, however golf was able to play and that is where I flourished. I made life long friends with my teammates and was one of two freshmen that made the varsity team. I continued to grow my relationships within the golf community going to many lessons with different professionals, saving for newer gear and clubs and dedicating my life to my one goal which was to play golf at the college level. Last year I was named the MVP of 3A NV north. As a senior now I can appreciate all the resilience in a time that many lost love ones. My great grandmother was turning 90 and lived in Tennessee and we had to cancel our plans to visit her for her birthday as she was social distancing from everyone to stay well. After a year went by on her 91st birthday we flew down as a surprise and it was the only time I saw my gran cry. We called her to tell her that a gift was waiting for her on her front porch and when she opened the door we were all standing there ready to give her a much awaited hug. I am so glad I was able to bring happiness to my gran as she was pretty much alone for a year and having all her children, grand daughters and her 4 great grandchildren there made her day one of the best ever. Sadly this year she passed from COVID. I am heading off to college this fall where I reached my first goal of playing golf at a University. I am proud I never gave up on my dream during these difficult times and am looking forward to what my future hold.

If I were to receive this scholarship I would be beyond grateful. I would use it to further my education and my golf career. It would help with housing, food, travel, tuition and equipment needed to play golf. I am planning on majoring in Business as I feel that will be a great start and is something I have always been interested in. I have been admitted to Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon and was invited to play on their golf team as well. Receiving this scholarship I can then further my education and possibly go into accounting or finance.
