James B. McKillip Scholarship for Physical Therapy
I will never forget the moment I realized physical therapy was my calling. While shadowing a physical therapist, I observed a patient struggling with a chronic ankle sprain. But the injury wasn't just physical had taken an emotional toll, leading to depression that made him reluctant to use his ankle at all. The therapist approached the situation with remarkable patience, calmly explaining what was happening at the ankle, outlining the rehabilitation plan, and instilling confidence that recovery was possible. Beyond the physical treatment, he recognized the deeper issue and made a compassionate referral to mental health services through the patient's work. Witnessing this holistic approach opened my eyes to the true impact of physical therapy-it's not just about movement, but restoring hope. Physical therapy is important to me because of the profound impact I have seen it have on so many. Growing up as a multisport athlete and later playing collegiate football at Whitworth University, I experienced firsthand the toll that injuries take not only physically, but also mentally. I saw teammates battle through rehab, some making full recoveries and others struggling due to a lack of proper guidance and support. Those experiences fueled my passion for working with athletes and individuals facing pain and disability. As a future physical therapist, I want to make a lasting impact by helping individuals regain strength, mobility, and confidence. My goal is to work with athletes of all ages (roughly 10-80+), guiding them through recovery while addressing mental, emotional, and behavioral challenges that come with setbacks. I believe that effective rehabilitation is more than just restoring function, but more about individuals reclaiming their identity and passion for movement. Beyond working with athletes, I am passionate about building relationships with all patients and meeting them exactly where they are in their journey. I want to create an environment where people feel supported, understood, and motivated to reach their goals. I think this is so critical because we have the opportunity to see these patients and build them up in possibly one of the lowest times of their life. By combining evidence-based treatment with a patient-centered approach, I hope to bridge the gap between physical rehabilitation and overall well-being. Physical therapy is more than a career path for me-it is a way to give back to the community I love. Just as that physical therapist once inspired me, I hope to inspire my future patients and colleagues to believe in their ability to recover, grow, and achieve more than they ever thought possible.
