    Christian J. Vazquez - Acts 20:35 Scholarship
My name is Jaclyn Torres, and I am pursuing a career in physical therapy because I believe it is the path God has called me to walk. I wasn't always sure what I wanted to study, and for a while, I felt lost about what direction to take in college. But after experiencing a season of uncertainty and watching my grandparents go through serious health challenges that required long-term rehabilitation, everything changed. Through that time, God revealed to me that physical therapy is more than just a profession; it's a calling and a way I can serve others and be a vessel to His healing and love. I deeply love Jesus, and I want every part of my life, including my education, career, and interactions with others, to reflect His compassion and purpose. Physical therapy offers a unique opportunity to do that. It's not just about helping people heal physically, but also walking with them through emotional and spiritual struggles. I see this field as a form of ministry, one where I can show up for people in their hardest moments and offer both clinical care and Christ-like compassion. One of my favorite Bible verses is John 13:7 - "You do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand." That verse has guided me through moments of confusion and fear. It reminds me that even when I can't see the full picture, God is still working, shaping my path, and preparing me for the work He wants me to do. Receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous blessing in helping me pursue both my academic and spiritual goals. Financial stress can be overwhelming, and this opportunity would allow me to focus more fully on my studies, clinical experiences, and spiritual growth. I hope to attend a physical therapy school where I can thrive not only as a student but also as a follower of Christ, growing in faith, character, and purpose. I believe I deserve this scholarship because I am wholeheartedly committed to using my education to serve others in a meaningful way. This support would not only ease the burden of tuition and expenses but would also empower me to walk boldly in my calling. My goal is to reflect God's love through my work, to make a difference in people's lives, and to honor Him in everything I do academically, professionally, and personally. In the future, I hope to mentor other students pursuing healthcare careers, especially those who also want to integrate their faith with their profession. I know how valuable it is to have guidance and encouragement from someone who has walked a similar path, and I want to be that support for others, especially those who may be struggling to find the balance between their faith and their future. I want to be a light in my community and an example of what it looks like the lead with purpose, integrity, and compassion. This scholarship is not just an investment in my education; it's an investment in the many lives I hope to impact through faith and service. Thank you for considering me for this opportunity.

My name is Jaclyn Torres, and I am pursuing a career in physical therapy because I am passionate about helping people recover, grow stronger, and regain confidence in themselves. For a long time, I wasn't sure what I wanted to study or what career path would be the right fit for me. I explored several options, but none of them truly sparked something in me until I experienced firsthand the power of physical therapy through my grandparents' journey. A few years ago, both my grandparents faced serious health challenges that required long-term rehabilitation. Being close to them during that time allowed me to witness the process up close. I saw how physical therapists played such a vital role in not only their physical progress but also their emotional well-being. They weren't just helping them move better; they were motivating them, lifting their spirits, and helping them regain their independence and confidence. That experience changed everything for me. It gave me a clear sense of purpose and direction I hadn't felt before. I am passionate about helping people improve their quality of life, especially during some of their most vulnerable moments. I believe physical therapy is about more than just helping people move better; it allows me to combine science, service, and compassion into a career that's both personally fulfilling and deeply impactful. Whether it's working with elderly patients, athletes, or individuals recovering from injury or surgery, I want to be a steady, encouraging presence in someone's journey toward healing. In the future, I hope to work in both clinical and community settings, particularly with underserved communities where access to quality healthcare is limited. I believe everyone deserves the opportunity to live a full, healthy life, regardless of their background or circumstances. My goal is to open or work in a clinic that serves underrepresented communities, offering care, education, and support where it's needed most. I hope to advocate for those who are often overlooked and to be a voice for patients who may not always feel heard. This career isn't just about helping people move again; it's about helping them move forward. I'm committed to becoming a skilled, compassionate professional who makes a real difference in the world, one patient at a time. No matter where my journey takes me, I will always lead with empathy, resilience, and a commitment to lifting others up. I want to leave a legacy of care, kindness, and progress both in the lives of my patients and in the broader community I serve.

I was sitting in class when I got a text from my mom that made my heart drop: "Papi is in the hospital. I'm coming to get you right now." My heart was racing, and my mind was spinning with fear. When we arrived at the hospital, we were told my grandpa had fallen and suffered a brain bleed. He needed emergency surgery. The operation went well, but recovery would be long. He had to stay in the hospital and start physical therapy to relearn how to walk. Watching him struggle through something so basic was heartbreaking. My grandpa had always been strong; he was even a boxer, and now he couldn't stand on his own. But over time, I saw him fight like the boxer he is, with strength, discipline, and determination. The physical therapists played a huge role in his recovery, not only physically, but emotionally. Watching them work with patience and care showed me the powerful impact they had. That's when I first realized I wanted to become a physical therapist. A few years later, my grandmother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After surgery, she also had to relearn how to walk and regain her balance. Just like with my grandpa, physical therapy gave her strength and independence. Once again, I saw how these professionals gave hope during a time when we felt helpless. My parents came over from Mexico to give my siblings and me a better life. Their sacrifices of working late or doing odd jobs just to get food on the table or pay the light bill taught me how to be hardworking. Being the oldest out of four kids, I helped my parents a lot by watching my younger brothers and sisters. That taught me to be responsible, caring, and have a loving heart toward people. In high school, I joined FFA. I raised goats as my animals. FFA gave me leadership skills, discipline, responsibility, and a strong work ethic. Whether I was caring for my animals or learning about agriculture, FFA taught me the value of consistency, time management, and serving a purpose bigger than myself. Most important of all, I lean on God for everything. My faith has carried me through all of life's twists and turns. I am very blessed to have parents who taught me at a very young age to always rely on God for everything and never lean on my own understanding. I know that even tho bad things happen to us, God will always get us through because He is a God of love and peace. All of these moments, my family's sacrifices, my faith, my time in FFA, and the experiences with my grandparents have shaped me into who I am today.

I was sitting in class when I got a text from my mom that made my heart drop: "Papi is in the hospital. I'm coming to get you right now." My heart was racing, and my mind was spinning with questions and fear. When we arrived at the hospital, the doctors told us my grandpa had fallen and suffered a brain bleed. He needed emergency surgery. The procedure went well, but his recovery was far from over. He had to remain in the hospital and begin physical therapy to relearn how to walk. It was difficult to see him like that. My grandpa has always been one of the strongest people I know, physically, mentally, and emotionally. He used to be a boxer, and I had always admired the strength and discipline that came with that. But now, even standing on his own was a challenge. At first, he was frustrated and tired, but over time, I watched him grow stronger. Step by step, I saw progress. I saw him fight like the boxer he is with grit, determination, and heart. The physical therapists were there every day, pushing him forward while celebrating even the smallest victories. They didn't just help him walk again; they gave him back a sense of control and confidence. Watching that transformation opened my eyes. I realized I wanted to be part of that kind of healing. I wanted to become a physical therapist. A few years later, my grandmother was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After undergoing surgery, she too had to learn how to walk and regain her balance. It felt like we were reliving the same nightmare. Once again, physical therapy became a central part of our lives. I saw my grandmother struggle through her pain and limitations, but slowly, I saw progress, encouragement, and expertise that made an unforgettable impression on me. Watching both of my grandparents go through these experiences showed me how crucial physical therapy is in the recovery process. It's more than just helping someone walk again; it's about helping them regain their independence and dignity. It's about giving families hope when everything feels uncertain. Those physical therapists didn't just treat my grandparents; they inspired me. These experiences sparked a deep desire in me to pursue a career in physical therapy. I want to be the person who walks beside patients on their toughest days and helps them find their strength again. I've seen what a difference the right support can make, and I'm passionate about providing that to others. Receiving this scholarship would help ease the financial burden of college and allow me to focus fully on my education. It would bring me one step closer to earning my undergraduate degree and eventually gaining admission to physical therapy school, where I can begin the journey to help others the way those therapists helped my family.

At the time, I was struggling to balance the demands of coursework with part-time employment to support myself financially. Additionally, I was dealing with the loss of my grandfather which was affecting my mental health and well-being. As a result, I found myself overwhelmed, stressed, and unsure of how to move forward. However, rather than succumbing to despair, I chose to confront my challenges head-on and seek support from friends, family, and campus resources. I reached out to professors for academic guidance, sought counseling for emotional support, and connected with mentors who provided guidance and encouragement. Through perseverance, self-reflection, and a commitment to personal growth, I was able to overcome my challenges and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever before. I learned valuable lessons about resilience, perseverance, and the importance of reaching out for help when needed. Looking back, I am grateful for the challenges I faced during that period, as they ultimately shaped me into the person I am today. They taught me the importance of resilience, resourcefulness, and self-care, and instilled in me a deep appreciation for the support networks that sustain us during times of adversity. In conclusion, while overcoming challenges can be difficult, it is also an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. By confronting our challenges with courage, resilience, and a willingness to seek support, we can emerge stronger, wiser, and better equipped to face whatever obstacles life may throw our way.

As our understanding of human physiology, sports science, and technology advances, so too will the methods and approaches employed in optimizing athletic performance and injury prevention. In this essay, I will explore several key trends shaping the future of strength and conditioning and outline how I intend to contribute to this exciting evolution. One prominent trend in the field is the increasing integration of data analytics and technology. Over the coming years, advancements in wearable technology, biometric sensors, and data analytics platforms will provide coaches and athletes with unprecedented insights into performance metrics, biomechanics, and recovery patterns. By harnessing this wealth of data, strength and conditioning professionals will be better equipped to tailor training programs to individual athletes, optimize performance, and mitigate injury risks. As awareness grows regarding the interconnectedness of these factors in achieving peak performance, strength and conditioning programs will evolve to adopt a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach. This holistic perspective acknowledges that factors such as stress management, sleep quality, and nutritional intake are integral components of an athlete's overall well-being and performance potential. Furthermore, the field of strength and conditioning is likely to witness a shift towards more personalized and adaptive training methodologies. Rather than adhering to generic, one-size-fits-all programs, coaches will increasingly leverage individualized assessments, genetic profiling, and machine learning algorithms to tailor training regimens to the unique physiological characteristics and performance goals of each athlete. This personalized approach holds the promise of optimizing training outcomes while minimizing the risk of overtraining or injury. As we look ahead to the next decade, I envision myself playing a pivotal role in driving these advancements and contributing to the evolution of strength and conditioning practices. Firstly, I am committed to staying abreast of the latest research and technological innovations in the field, continually seeking opportunities to integrate emerging tools and methodologies into my practice. By remaining at the forefront of scientific developments, I aim to provide my athletes with cutting-edge training programs that maximize their potential for success. Secondly, I am passionate about fostering a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing within the strength and conditioning community. I believe that by collaborating with experts from diverse disciplines, including sports science, nutrition, and sports psychology, we can develop more holistic and effective approaches to athlete development. Through mentorship, coaching clinics, and collaborative research initiatives, I intend to contribute to the collective expertise of the field and empower the next generation of strength and conditioning professionals. In conclusion, the field of strength and conditioning is on the cusp of a transformative evolution, driven by advancements in technology, data analytics, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Over the next 5-10 years, we can expect to see a greater emphasis on personalized training methodologies, holistic athlete development, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies. As a practitioner and advocate for the field, I am committed to playing an active role in shaping this future landscape, leveraging innovation and collaboration to unlock new frontiers in athletic performance and well-being.

This past summer, I volunteered at my local hospital, and I loved it. The job that they assigned me was walking around the therapy dogs. My job was to walk the dogs to the different wings of the hospital and bring them to the patients so that they could pet them and get some puppy love. Watching the parents with the dogs always brought me joy, to see patients light up when the dogs came around was rewarding. Some of the patients would be away from their dogs for weeks at a time. Being able to pet the dogs would bring them happiness, especially if they had the same breed. The dogs weren't just for the patients. The nurses and doctors also loved getting to see the dogs. They always brought so many people joy. Volunteering has been a remarkable journey of personal growth and self-discovery, profoundly impacting my mindset and shaping my worldview. Volunteering has opened my eyes to the diverse realities faced by individuals from different walks of life. My alarm goes off at five in the morning. I hit snooze to sleep for five more minutes. My alarm goes off again then I have to get up. I put on my jersey and spanks, then throw over my hoodie and sweats cause it's fifty degrees outside. My mom has got the car packed and we are ready to drive across Houston for my volleyball tournament. We get there and I have to be on the court right away to start warming up.
