    Living with a chronic illness such as depression has shaped my educational journey in ways I never expected. While depression is often invisible to others, its effects are constant and deeply challenging. It influences motivation, energy, concentration, and even my sense of identity. Yet despite these obstacles, it has also taught me resilience, self‑advocacy, and the importance of pursuing my goals with determination and compassion. Depression affected my education most noticeably in middle and early high school, when I struggled with fatigue, difficulty focusing, and feelings of discouragement that made even simple assignments feel overwhelming. There were times when maintaining good grades or participating in class felt impossible, not because I lacked ability, but because every task required significantly more emotional effort than my peers realized. The inconsistency of my symptoms meant some days were productive and hopeful, while others required all my energy just to show up. This unpredictability forced me to develop strong self‑management skills—tracking my responsibilities carefully, communicating with teachers when needed, and learning to break assignments into smaller, manageable steps. Despite these challenges, I made a commitment not to let depression define my future. For me, those challenges have been depression and anxiety—conditions that shape how I think, how I work, and how I move through each school day. Although these disabilities are invisible, they have had a very real impact on my education. They influence my motivation, my ability to stay organized, and the energy it takes to complete assignments that others may finish without a second thought. But they have also taught me persistence, self‑advocacy, and the importance of asking for help when I need it. Depression can make it difficult for me to care about tasks that I know matter, including homework. Anxiety can turn small assignments into overwhelming mountains, making it hard to start or finish them on time. These conditions often work together in ways that make school feel heavier than it should. Throughout school, I was fortunate to have STEM teachers who did more than explain concepts—they inspired me to think critically, push further, and ask harder questions. They didn’t just teach lessons; they sparked a mindset. One teacher in particular made physics feel like a language that decoded the world. Instead of presenting equations as something to memorize, they challenged us to see them as tools for uncovering truth. Their passion helped me realize that STEM is not about having the right answers, but about developing the courage and creativity to search for them. That sense of empowerment has shaped my entire academic direction. As my interests grew, aerospace engineering became the field that captured my attention most deeply. Aviation fascinates me because it blends physics, engineering, innovation, and human ingenuity into something that literally lifts us off the ground. Every aircraft is a complex system where thousands of components must work together flawlessly, and understanding those systems fuels my desire to learn more. The more I study aerospace engineering, the more I appreciate the balance between scientific principles and real‑world applications—how lift, drag, thrust, materials, and design choices all interact to create safe and efficient flight. Experiencing flying lessons firsthand only strengthened this interest by allowing me to see how theory transforms into action. What excites me most about STEM, and aerospace engineering in particular, is the opportunity to contribute to fields that push boundaries and solve meaningful problems.     This year, I made a conscious effort to become more involved in my community by seeking out meaningful opportunities where I could contribute my time, skills, and passions. I participated in a variety of local volunteer events, including community clean‑ups and service projects organized by groups such as the Rotary Club, the YMCA, and Blessing Hands. These projects allowed me to directly support organizations that make a difference in the lives of families in our area, while helping improve and maintain the shared spaces we all rely on. Taking part in these events helped me stay connected to the people around me and gave me a deeper appreciation for how much behind‑the‑scenes work goes into building a strong, supportive community. My favorite activity was with Blessing Hands. We collected food and created baskets with all the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal. We handed these out to local families in need so that they could celebrate and have a meal with their families. In addition to these efforts, I volunteered through several school‑related events. I assisted with the Rotary Club’s Peace Pole dedication and contributed to organizing, setting up, and tearing down for the YMCA’s Father‑Daughter Dance. At these events, I supported staff, helped coordinate activities, and made sure things ran smoothly for students and families. Being involved in events that bring people together taught me how important it is to show up and support the experiences that help a community feel connected. These opportunities also helped me build strong relationships with community members and taught me how much impact even small acts of service can have. I also expanded my involvement by joining the local county 4‑H band, combining community service with my love of percussion. This experience allowed me to connect with other students who share a passion for music and introduced me to people I might not have met otherwise. Through the band, we performed at nursing homes, elementary schools, and community concerts, using music to bring joy to audiences of all ages. Sharing something I love while brightening someone’s day was incredibly meaningful and reinforced my belief in the power of community involvement. Overall, I made it a priority this year to stay engaged, contribute consistently, and push myself to step up even when it required extra effort. These experiences have helped strengthen my community and have also taught me valuable communication, leadership, and teamwork skills—qualities that I will carry with me into my academic journey and future career.

    I am interested in aviation because it brings together challenge, purpose, and global connection in a way few other fields do. Aviation has always fascinated me—not just the aircraft themselves, but the teamwork, precision, and coordination required to move people and goods safely across the world. Every flight represents a complex system working flawlessly: engineering, communication, weather analysis, safety, and human judgment all coming together. Experiencing this firsthand during my flying lessons made my interest even stronger. Being in the cockpit, understanding each control, and watching how every decision affects the aircraft taught me just how much skill and discipline aviation requires. Those early lessons gave me a deeper respect for the field and confirmed that this is where I want to build my future. With my aviation degree, I plan to pursue a career in Aerospace Engineering. I’m drawn to roles that require strong problem‑solving skills, creativity, and the ability to see both the big picture and the fine details. I want to work on developing and improving aircraft systems, structures, and equipment that keep air travel safe and reliable. Long‑term, I hope to contribute to advances that make aviation even more efficient and sustainable, supporting a future where global travel is safer and more accessible. My inspiration comes from a lifelong curiosity about how things work—and why they work the way they do. Whether it was taking things apart as a kid or asking endless questions, I’ve always been driven by the desire to understand mechanisms and systems. Aviation naturally pulled me in because it blends science, engineering, and real‑world impact. Watching the preparation behind each flight—inspections, planning, communication, coordination—showed me that aviation is both a science and a service. And beyond that, there is simply no better feeling than being among the clouds, experiencing the world from a perspective that very few people get to see. Community involvement has also shaped who I am. I volunteer locally and take part in service events that strengthen and support my community. These experiences have humbled me and taught me leadership, communication, and teamwork—skills that are essential in aviation and engineering. They’ve also reminded me of the importance of giving back and staying connected to the people around me. Overall, aviation and engineering offer the perfect balance of challenge, purpose, and opportunity.
