Returning to school after a break can be an exciting but challenging experience. My personal journey back to school involved overcoming several obstacles, both internal and external, which tested my resilience and adaptability. One of the most significant challenges I faced was adjusting to the academic rigor after being away from a structured learning environment for an extended period. In the years I had been away, I had developed different habits and priorities, and getting back into the mindset of regular studying, meeting deadlines, and managing coursework was initially overwhelming. I had to re-learn effective time management techniques, create study schedules, and develop strategies for staying organized. The academic demands were high, and I often found myself questioning whether I could balance school with other responsibilities. Another challenge was dealing with the technological aspect of modern education. When I first left school, digital learning tools and platforms like Zoom, Google Classroom, and online collaboration software were not as prevalent. Returning to school meant getting familiar with new technology that I hadn’t previously used, which was both daunting and frustrating at times. Learning how to navigate online portals, participate in virtual classes, and submit assignments through various platforms required a steep learning curve. There were moments when I felt disconnected from the class or overwhelmed by the constant stream of notifications and digital tasks. Additionally, I had to contend with the self-doubt and imposter syndrome that often accompanies returning to school as an older student. I found myself surrounded by younger peers who seemed more familiar with the academic environment, and this sometimes made me feel out of place. I questioned whether I had the same level of competence and whether I could keep up with the demands of the coursework. These feelings of inadequacy were a significant mental barrier that I had to confront and overcome. In the beginning, I struggled with finding my voice in class discussions or feeling like I belonged in academic spaces. However, over time, I recognized that my life experience added a unique perspective, and I gradually became more confident in my contributions. Balancing school with other life responsibilities was another major challenge. Many adult students returning to school are often juggling family, work, or financial obligations, and I was no exception. Managing a tight schedule that included classes, studying, work, and personal life required careful planning and a lot of flexibility. At times, I had to make difficult decisions about how to prioritize my time, and there were moments when I felt burnt out. It wasn’t always easy to maintain a balance, and there were instances when I had to reach out for support from family and friends to help lighten the load. Despite these challenges, the process of returning to school has been a rewarding and transformative experience. I have learned how to manage my time more effectively, overcome self-doubt, and embrace the learning process as an ongoing journey rather than a destination. One of the key takeaways from this experience has been the importance of persistence. Whether it’s tackling complex coursework, mastering new technology, or balancing competing responsibilities, I have learned that challenges are an inevitable part of growth. They require patience, resilience, and the willingness to adapt and it is through this process that I have gained a deeper understanding of myself and my capacity to succeed. In the end, returning to school was not just about academic achievement, but about personal growth and transformation. The obstacles I faced along the way have only made me more determined to succeed and more grateful for the opportunity to continue my education.

    Future Leaders Scholarship
During my time as a team leader in a university research project, I had the opportunity to demonstrate and refine my leadership skills. Our task was to analyze the economic impact of renewable energy initiatives on local communities. This was a complex, multi-phase project requiring coordination across disciplines, tight deadlines, and clear communication. The challenge wasn’t just the scope of the research itself but the diverse range of perspectives and skill sets within our group. As team leader, my role was to ensure cohesion, manage resources efficiently, and maintain morale despite the inevitable obstacles we encountered. One of the biggest challenges we faced was aligning the team’s diverse expertise. We had members from economics, environmental science, and policy backgrounds, each bringing their own language, methodologies, and expectations. Early on, I noticed that communication was a barrier, with some members unsure how their specific contributions fit into the larger project. To address this, I initiated a series of structured meetings where we could discuss both our individual contributions and how they intersected with the broader objectives. I encouraged an open dialogue, fostering an environment where everyone felt comfortable voicing their concerns and suggesting improvements. By framing these conversations around the common goal—producing a comprehensive, impactful analysis of renewable energy’s local economic effects—I helped align the team’s efforts toward a unified purpose. In addition to facilitating communication, I had to manage time effectively. The project had multiple deadlines, each with its own set of tasks and dependencies. I implemented a detailed project timeline, breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable goals and assigning them according to team members’ strengths. I also set up a system of regular progress check-ins, allowing me to identify potential roadblocks early on and offer support where necessary. This proactive approach helped prevent delays and kept the team focused. However, leadership wasn’t just about overseeing tasks and timelines. It was also about maintaining motivation during the inevitable setbacks. Midway through the project, we faced significant setbacks with data collection—some of the sources we had planned to use were either incomplete or unreliable. This caused frustration within the team, and morale began to dip. I recognized the importance of addressing this challenge both practically and emotionally. I arranged a brainstorming session to explore alternative data sources and strategies, and I also took the time to personally check in with each team member to offer support. Acknowledging the hard work everyone had already put in, I emphasized the importance of resilience and collaboration in overcoming these setbacks. This moment of encouragement helped reignite the team’s enthusiasm and commitment to the project. The result of our efforts was a well-researched, thorough report that was not only academically rigorous but also actionable for local policymakers. The findings of our study were presented to local government officials, which led to a discussion about the potential for future renewable energy projects in the region. The project’s success was a testament to the strength of teamwork and the impact of clear, supportive leadership. Looking ahead to my future career, I plan to apply the leadership skills I developed during this project in a professional context, particularly in roles where collaboration across diverse teams is key. Whether in project management, consulting, or any leadership position, I aim to foster environments where clear communication, empathy, and proactive problem-solving are the foundations for success. I am committed to making a positive difference by leading teams that are both productive and motivated, encouraging innovation while navigating the challenges that inevitably arise.

One of the most pressing environmental challenges today is the rapid degradation of ecosystems due to deforestation and unsustainable land use. Forests are vital to the health of the planet, providing a habitat for countless species, regulating water cycles, and absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide to mitigate climate change. However, human activities such as logging, agriculture, and urban expansion have significantly reduced forest cover, leading to a range of ecological imbalances, from biodiversity loss to increased greenhouse gas emissions. This destruction not only disrupts wildlife but also affects the livelihoods of communities that rely on forest ecosystems for resources and environmental services. The rate at which deforestation is occurring, particularly in tropical regions like the Amazon Rainforest, poses a serious threat to global efforts to combat climate change. Forests act as carbon sinks, and their destruction releases large amounts of stored carbon back into the atmosphere, exacerbating the greenhouse effect. Additionally, deforestation often leads to soil erosion, which can degrade land quality and render it less suitable for agriculture, thus trapping local communities in cycles of poverty and land degradation. Given the crucial role that forests play in the global ecosystem, I believe addressing deforestation is one of the most urgent environmental challenges. As someone pursuing a career in systems engineering and supply chain management, I believe my skills and expertise can contribute to solving this issue. I would like to focus on developing sustainable supply chains that prioritize responsible land use and reduce deforestation. By integrating such certifications into supply chains, businesses can reduce their environmental impact while meeting consumer demand for sustainable products. Another area where I hope to make a difference is by leveraging technology to create more efficient land management systems. Advances in remote sensing, satellite imagery, and artificial intelligence can help monitor forested areas and detect illegal logging activities in real-time. By utilizing these technologies, governments and organizations can take swift action to prevent deforestation and manage forests more sustainably. As someone with a background in systems engineering, I would like to contribute to the development of these tools to ensure they are scalable and accessible, especially for regions with limited resources. Moreover, I believe that community involvement is crucial to the success of any environmental initiative. Local communities are often the first to experience the effects of deforestation, and they can play a key role in conservation efforts. By working with these communities, I would aim to implement programs that provide alternative livelihoods, such as agroforestry or eco-tourism, which promote forest conservation while supporting economic development. Additionally, I would advocate for educational initiatives that raise awareness about the importance of forests and empower communities to take ownership of their natural resources. In conclusion, deforestation is one of the most urgent environmental challenges facing our planet. Through sustainable supply chain management, technological innovation, and community engagement, I am committed to contributing to efforts that protect and restore forest ecosystems. GUTS- Olivia Rodrigo Fan Scholarship
One lyric from Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS that resonates deeply is from the song "Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl": “Each time I step outside, it’s social suicide.” This line encapsulates a universal feeling of adolescent insecurity, a sentiment that often surfaces during the teenage years when the desire for social belonging clashes with feelings of isolation and awkwardness. The line reflects the internal struggle many teenagers face as they try to navigate friendships, social norms, and personal identity, a particularly tumultuous process that shapes their development. During adolescence, self-consciousness can often feel overwhelming. The idea of “social suicide” suggests that even mundane social interactions feel like high-stakes events, where one wrong move can lead to judgment or rejection. This lyric taps into the vulnerability of those years, where overthinking every action, from what you wear to what you say, can feel paralyzing. It’s the sense that every move you make could lead to embarrassment, something that hits close to home for many teenagers, including myself. In my own teenage experience, I found myself worrying constantly about how others perceived me. Whether it was during school events, group projects, or social gatherings, I often felt out of place, anxious that I wasn’t saying the right thing or acting in a way that would be accepted by my peers. Even minor interactions like walking into a room full of classmates or joining a conversation felt like moments of intense scrutiny. I remember feeling hesitant to participate in social activities, fearing that I might make an awkward comment or appear too different. It’s a feeling that Olivia Rodrigo captures perfectly, and it reminds me how common these experiences are for teens. The lyric also speaks to the broader theme of identity, something adolescents struggle to figure out amidst the pressures of conformity. During my teenage years, I was constantly battling between being true to myself and trying to fit in. It’s easy to lose yourself when you’re focused on meeting others’ expectations, and many teens, like myself, grapple with this tension. Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric brings out the uncomfortable truth that growing up often involves feeling like an outsider, unsure of who you are or where you belong. Moreover, the lyric captures the loneliness that comes with these experiences. Feeling like every social interaction is a misstep can be isolating, as it pushes you further into your own insecurities. For me, the fear of rejection sometimes led to avoidance. I found myself retreating from social situations, convincing myself that it was safer to stay on the sidelines than to risk “social suicide.” But looking back, I realize that many of my peers likely felt the same way—they just didn’t show it. This shared vulnerability is what makes the lyric so powerful. It reminds us that while adolescence can feel lonely, it’s also a time when everyone is experiencing similar anxieties, even if they don’t openly admit it. In the end, Olivia Rodrigo’s lyric highlights one of the most defining aspects of adolescence: the fear of social rejection and the pressure to fit in. For many teenagers, these feelings are an everyday reality, and the lyric resonates because it speaks to the internal battles that define growing up. By putting words to these emotions, Rodrigo creates a space for teenagers to feel understood, which is why this lyric stands out as such a powerful reflection of the adolescent experience.

My experience with mental health came forward when my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer during my second semester in college. I lost my mom the summer of my sophomore year in college. She was only 47 years old. All of this happened during the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown. Her passing drastically impacted my family. Previously my dad had struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) but was able to keep it in check in a way that did not negatively impact his life. After my mom passed paired with stress from the pandemic, his OCD greatly started to impact his life and was accompanied by depression. My dad changed and, in a sense, I lost him for a couple of years too. He just seemed stuck and was not able to do daily tasks without them affecting him. He was no longer cheerful and optimistic, but rather, constantly tired, and depressed. My parents had been together since they were in high school; they were high school sweethearts. He did not know how to comprehend day-to-day life without his best friend. I also have a twin brother and a younger sister. Even though my twin and I were college students, I still saw us as just kids. We were all just kids. It forced all of us to have to grow up a lot faster. While my dad was not fully present, I ran the household. I handled the obituary, contacting friends and family, and daily chores. I became responsible for tasks my mom and dad typically handled such as taking care of my younger sister, cooking, running errands, and more. Through my new responsibilities of running a household, I gained even more respect for my mom and realized everything I took for granted. Trying to please everyone while cooking dinner is a lot harder than I would have ever guessed. This takeaway has led me to be more considerate to others and regret not being nicer to my mom. After some convincing, my dad saw a therapist, and with time, everything began to improve. Today, my dad and family are doing a lot better and are more educated in terms of mental health. This chapter in our lives is greatly defining. It showed me that tomorrow is not guaranteed. This has given me a new sense of drive and ambition. I want to excel academically in my career and be able to support my family. I am now pursuing one of my dreams of achieving a master's degree in engineering. It also shows that through hard work, change and improvement can happen when you are supported.

Violet's evolution from a mechanical soldier devoid of emotion to a compassionate and empathetic Auto Memory Doll is a testament to the series' exploration of the human condition. Spider-Man Showdown Scholarship
In the ever-expanding cinematic universe of Spider-Man, where different actors have donned the iconic red and blue suit, Tobey Maguire remains my favorite portrayal of the beloved web-slinger. Maguire's rendition, spanning three films directed by Sam Raimi from 2002 to 2007, not only marked a significant era in superhero filmmaking but also captured the essence of Peter Parker in a way that resonates with fans, myself included. Tobey Maguire's portrayal of Spider-Man in the early 2000s was a landmark moment in the superhero genre. At the time, the superhero landscape was not as saturated as it is today, and Maguire's Peter Parker was a groundbreaking depiction that set the stage for the modern era of superhero blockbusters. What sets Maguire apart is his ability to embody the duality of Peter Parker's character—awkward and endearing as a high school student, yet courageous and burdened with responsibility as Spider-Man. Maguire's Peter Parker is the quintessential everyman, and his journey from a socially awkward teenager to a selfless hero is a compelling arc that transcends the superhero genre. Maguire brings a vulnerability and sincerity to the character, allowing audiences to empathize with Peter's struggles, be it the challenges of adolescence, the loss of loved ones, or the weight of being a superhero. This emotional depth is a testament to Maguire's acting prowess, as he navigates the complexities of Peter Parker's life with authenticity and nuance. One of the defining qualities of Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man is the emotional weight he brings to the character. Maguire's Spider-Man is not just a wisecracking superhero swinging between skyscrapers; he's a relatable figure grappling with the consequences of his choices. The iconic "Uncle Ben" scene, where Peter learns the timeless lesson that "with great power comes great responsibility," is delivered with a poignancy that lingers throughout the trilogy. Maguire's ability to convey the emotional toll of being Spider-Man sets his portrayal apart and adds layers of depth to the character. Additionally, Maguire's chemistry with Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson, contributes to the emotional core of the trilogy. Their on-screen romance feels genuine, and the challenges their characters face mirror the complexities of real relationships. Maguire's portrayal of Peter's internal conflicts, particularly the tug-of-war between personal desires and superhero duties, adds a human dimension to the superhero narrative. Furthermore, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man holds a special place in my heart due to the nostalgic value of the early 2000s trilogy. These films were pivotal in shaping the superhero genre and laying the groundwork for the cinematic universes that followed. Maguire's Spider-Man became an enduring symbol of heroism during a time when superhero films were transitioning from their comic book origins to mainstream blockbuster success. In conclusion, Tobey Maguire's portrayal of Spider-Man stands out as my favorite due to the emotional depth, authenticity, and cultural significance he brought to the character. Maguire's Spider-Man is not just a superhero swinging through the streets of New York; he's a relatable and empathetic figure, navigating the challenges of life with a genuine sense of humanity. Whether swinging between skyscrapers or facing personal dilemmas, Maguire's Spider-Man remains a timeless and iconic representation of the beloved web-slinger.

My mom, Dr. Julie Stoner, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer during my second semester in college. I lost my mom the summer of my sophomore year in college; she died on June 18th, 2020. She was only 47 years old. Everything seemed to happen so quickly. She passed during the lockdown which did not enable us to have a traditional memorial service; however, the lockdown did allow me to spend time with my mom while still completing my college degree through Zoom. Without the lockdown, I would not have been able to spend as much time with her, so I am thankful I had this time with her. Her passing drastically impacted my family. My dad changed and in a sense, I lost him for a couple of years too. He was no longer a cheerful and optimistic individual, but rather, constantly tired and depressed. While my dad was not present, I took responsibility for running the household. This takeaway has led me to be more considerate to others and I do regret not being nicer to my mom. My mom played a huge role in my life, besides just being a mom. She was the department chair for biostatistics and epidemiology at the University of Oklahoma College of Public Health. Her work ethic and dedication to public health inspired me to also have an academic drive and love for math. Similar to my dream, her childhood dream was to become an astronaut. This dream was not met, but her love of STEM is still very alive in me. I am now working on NASA projects and hoping to eventually become an astronaut as well. A saying I heard while growing up was "ad astra per aspera." This is Latin for through adversity to the stars. This phrase is a great representation of my life and my goal is to reach for the stars and be the best version of myself.

Opting for public transportation, carpooling, biking, or walking whenever feasible helps to minimize my reliance on fossil fuels and decrease air pollution. This choice is motivated by an understanding of the environmental impact of traditional transportation methods and a commitment to promoting cleaner alternatives that contribute to a healthier planet. I am also intentional about supporting sustainable and ethical brands. Whether it's clothing, household products, or electronics, I prioritize companies that demonstrate a commitment to environmentally friendly practices, fair labor conditions, and ethical sourcing. This choice reflects a belief in the power of consumer behavior to influence corporate practices and promote sustainability throughout the supply chain. Reducing my carbon footprint is important to me for several reasons. First and foremost, it is a response to the urgent need to address climate change. The scientific consensus is clear: human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, contribute significantly to the warming of the planet. By reducing my carbon footprint, I actively participate in the global effort to mitigate the impacts of climate change and work towards a more sustainable future. Additionally, minimizing my environmental impact aligns with a broader ethic of responsibility and stewardship for the planet. Living sustainably is an acknowledgment that our actions have consequences, and each individual plays a role in preserving the Earth for current and future generations. It reflects a commitment to environmental justice and a recognition of the interconnectedness of all living things. In conclusion, the intentional choices I make to live sustainably in my daily life, from dietary preferences to consumption habits, are rooted in a deep understanding of the environmental challenges we face. By reducing my carbon footprint, I contribute to a collective effort to address climate change, promote sustainable practices, and foster a more harmonious relationship between humanity and the planet we call home. Living sustainably is not just a personal choice; it is a responsibility we all share in creating a more sustainable and resilient future.

    “The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
I resonate with Angela. She is portrayed as a no-nonsense, rule-oriented, and often judgmental character. She also experiences moments of vulnerability and struggles with expressing her true feelings. Angela's deadpan delivery and sarcastic humor are distinctive aspects of her character, which match my comedic style. I am also more of a cat person than a dog person. I even own a cat that I named Angela after her character in the office. After watching the show and working in an office environment I find everything more enjoyable from deadlines, party planning, and petty issues. When I was tasked with party planning, I took my role more seriously than I would in the past. Angela always was strict and detail-oriented so I have adopted her planning skills. This new addition has allowed me to prepare for events and meetings better while also giving me a similar reputation for being cold, dry, and sarcastic. I will also note that at work, I do not take things as seriously anymore. Long term, a disagreement or event will not have a large impact on my emotions. Everything will be funny in hindsight. The office has provided me a way to eliminate awkward silence with and to make friends with at work.

    Eden Alaine Memorial Scholarship
My mom, Dr. Julie Stoner, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer during my second semester in college. Everything happened so quickly. I lost my mom the summer of my sophomore year in college; she died on June 18th, 2020. She was only 47 years old. While my dad was not present, I took responsibility for running the household. Her childhood dream was to become an astronaut. This dream was not met, but her love of STEM is still very alive in me. I am now working on NASA projects and hoping to eventually become an astronaut as well. A saying I heard while growing up was "ad astra per aspera," which is Latin for through adversity to the stars. This phrase is a great representation of my life. My goal is to reach for the stars and be the best version of myself.
