Bio

Hi! Thanks for visiting my profile! :) Despite wanting to pursue a medical career all my life, I’ve always been enamored with helping my community through service and initiatives. After deciding that both were too important for me to give up, I chose to pursue both by combining my interests through my extracurriculars at school such as Service Club, Debate Team, the Health Occupations of America, and Foreign Exchange Club. My goals are to eventually become an ER physician. Ultimately, I want to know my work is creating a positive impact within communities, whether that be through volunteering or helping raise awareness about global issues.

    Redefining Victory Scholarship
Embarking on my academic journey, I chose an unconventional path that reflected my determination and commitment to education. Instead of immediately enrolling in a four-year university, I decided to attend community college to better care for my father, who was experiencing complications with his liver. The summer after high school graduation, I enrolled in three community college classes, eager to get a head start on my college education. By the fall of the same year, I proudly completed my associate degree and was accepted to the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. The transition from community college to the esteemed University of Michigan posed both challenges and rewards. My journey was characterized by perseverance and dedication as I navigated the complexities of balancing rigorous academic commitments with the demands of two jobs. I attended night classes, committed to intensive study sessions, and faced skepticism from those who doubted the feasibility of my unconventional path. However, the acceptance to the University of Michigan became a crowning achievement, validating the hard work and sacrifices I had made and reinforcing the lesson that hard work indeed pays off. The challenges I encountered were not just academic; they became a crucible that forged my character and resilience. Late-night study sessions, early morning shifts, and the constant juggling act between work and education were not hindrances but stepping stones toward personal and academic growth. Every obstacle became an opportunity to prove that success is not solely defined by one's starting point but by the relentless effort invested in self-improvement. In the face of skepticism and naysayers, I maintained the belief that my journey was a valid and meaningful path toward success. It underscored the idea that hard work and the pursuit of personal betterment are foundational to achieving one's goals. Each milestone, from completing my associate degree to gaining admission to the University of Michigan, attested to the transformative power of determination and continuous self-improvement. This journey is a testament to the idea that success knows no predetermined path. It requires not only academic prowess but also the grit to persevere against the odds. My story exemplifies the potential within those willing to push boundaries, embrace challenges, and work diligently toward their goals. Balancing work, night classes, and intense study sessions shaped me into a resilient individual. The connections and lessons I've learned from my friends, family, and mentors have taught me the importance of dedication, patience, and confidence in success. At the University of Michigan, my journey continued to unfold with a whirlwind of growth and an unwavering commitment to academic excellence and community contributions. In just two semesters, I've navigated a dynamic and enriching balance of responsibilities. Dedicating 36 hours a week as a Patient Care Technician at the University of Michigan Hospital, I've been immersed in a hands-on role that allows me to make a positive impact on individuals' lives. This commitment not only enhances my practical knowledge in healthcare but also instills in me a profound sense of empathy and compassion by hearing patient stories. Simultaneously, my role as a research assistant at the School of Dentistry has opened a gateway to academia and scientific inquiry in genetics and bone modeling. Working alongside esteemed faculty members, I've had the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research, expanding my intellectual horizons and nurturing a passion for discovery. Beyond my academic pursuits, I proudly serve as the fundraising chair for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This role allows me to channel my energy and enthusiasm into a cause close to my heart, raising awareness and funds to support mental health initiatives and leave an impact on campus. It's a position that not only aligns with my values but also amplifies the impact I aspire to make in fostering positive change. Balancing these multifaceted roles has undoubtedly been challenging, but it's a challenge I willingly embrace. It's a testament to my belief in the importance of holistic development — academically, professionally, and personally. Through each endeavor, I am not only acquiring valuable skills and knowledge but also contributing meaningfully to the well-being of others and the community at large. As I navigate this dynamic journey at the University of Michigan, my experiences as a patient care technician, a research assistant, and a fundraising chair have become integral parts of my identity. They reflect my commitment to making a difference in the world, extending beyond the academic realm to touch the lives of those around me. This comprehensive approach to success aligns seamlessly with my vision of personal and academic achievement.

Parenting is a journey filled with joys, challenges, and the responsibility of shaping a child's character and values. While I cannot speak from personal experience, I can share some universal values that many parents aspire to instill in their children or that single parents often prioritize in their upbringing. First and foremost, I believe in the importance of empathy. Teaching children to understand and share the feelings of others can help them develop strong interpersonal skills and foster a sense of compassion. Empathy enables them to navigate diverse relationships and contribute positively to society. Integrity is another core value that I find essential. By teaching children the importance of honesty, authenticity, and moral principles, parents can guide them toward making ethical choices and acting with integrity in all aspects of life. This value helps build trust and credibility, which are essential for healthy relationships and personal growth. Resilience is a value that can empower children to face life's challenges with determination and perseverance. By encouraging them to develop a growth mindset, embrace failures as learning opportunities, and develop problem-solving skills, parents can instill resilience and a sense of inner strength in their children. Resilient individuals are more likely to adapt to change, overcome obstacles, and thrive in a rapidly changing world. I believe in the value of curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. Encouraging children to ask questions, explore their interests, and pursue knowledge can ignite their passion for continuous learning and personal growth. Nurturing curiosity fosters creativity, critical thinking, and adaptability, empowering them to thrive in various spheres of life. Kindness and gratitude are values that can shape a child's character and nurture positive relationships. Teaching children to be kind, compassionate, and grateful cultivates a sense of appreciation for others and the world around them. By instilling these values, parents encourage empathy, humility, and a genuine concern for the well-being of others. Lastly, I believe in the importance of fostering independence and resilience in children. Encouraging autonomy and self-reliance helps children develop confidence, decision-making skills, and a strong sense of responsibility. By gradually giving them age-appropriate responsibilities and allowing them to make choices, parents empower their children to grow into capable and independent individuals. Every family and parent may have unique values that they prioritize in their child's upbringing. The values I have mentioned are not exhaustive but provide a foundation for cultivating positive character traits and guiding children toward a fulfilling and meaningful life. In addition to the values mentioned earlier, I strongly believe in the importance of allowing children to explore and fostering open-mindedness as a parent. Embracing a mindset of openness and flexibility can create a nurturing environment for children to discover their passions, interests, and unique identities. By encouraging exploration, parents can empower their children to embrace new experiences, engage in diverse perspectives, and develop their own sense of self. An open-minded parent understands the importance of listening to their child, respecting their thoughts and ideas, and providing them with opportunities to express themselves freely. This approach promotes a healthy parent-child relationship built on trust, mutual understanding, and the celebration of individuality. Allowing children to explore and being open-minded as a parent can inspire creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning in children, preparing them for a world that values diversity, innovation, and adaptability. In conclusion, parenting is a deeply personal and transformative journey. Instilling values such as empathy, integrity, resilience, curiosity, kindness, gratitude, and independence can equip children with the tools they need to navigate life's challenges, contribute positively to society, and cultivate their own sense of purpose and fulfillment.

The story follows two young friends, Ma and Luo, who are sent to a remote mountain village for re-education. There, they encounter the beautiful and enchanting Little Seamstress, and their lives are forever changed. What makes this book so special is its exploration of the power of literature to inspire hope, ignite imagination, and challenge oppressive systems. Through their forbidden access to a hidden suitcase filled with forbidden Western books, Ma and Luo embark on a journey of self-discovery, intellectual awakening, and the transformative potential of literature. "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating cultural heritage, the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, and the universal power of storytelling. It beautifully captures the essence of the human experience, the longing for freedom, and the pursuit of knowledge. Taylor Swift ‘1989’ Fan Scholarship
My favorite song on Taylor Swift's '1989' album is "New Romantics." "New Romantics" is the closing track on Taylor Swift's fifth studio album, '1989.' It is a catchy pop anthem that resonates with listeners due to its infectious melody and empowering lyrics. The song captures the essence of youth, love, and the pursuit of happiness in a world filled with challenges. One of the reasons why "New Romantics" stands out is its relatable and uplifting message. The lyrics encourage listeners to embrace their individuality, celebrate their flaws, and live life to the fullest. It serves as an anthem for those who are unafraid to take risks, explore new adventures, and defy societal expectations. New Romantics did not receive the 'full album treatment' and I honestly didn't feel a big radio push at all and it seems to always be at the bottom of everyone's list when rating music videos. This song felt so special it could've even been the name of the album because it represents it so well, but it doesn't get enough attention in my opinion. The quote, "If your goal is to become financially secure, you'll likely attain it, but if your motive is to make money to spend money on a good life, you're never gonna make it," highlights a crucial distinction in financial aspirations. It emphasizes the importance of having a clear purpose and mindset when it comes to money and achieving financial security. This dichotomy is so simple yet very striking for many as it deals with one of the main culprits for those feel-good purchases: impulsivity. In a consumer-driven society, it is easy to get caught up in the pursuit of material possessions and immediate gratification. Many people equate wealth with a lavish lifestyle, assuming that accumulating money is the sole means of happiness and fulfillment. Nowadays, with luxury brands, products, and social media this has become harder than ever. However, this perspective often leads to a never-ending cycle of chasing material possessions without finding true contentment and the correlation between confidence and exploitation. The wisdom behind this quote lies in recognizing that financial security is not solely about amassing wealth for the sake of conspicuous consumption. It implies that if your primary motive is to accumulate money merely to indulge in a lavish lifestyle, you are unlikely to find lasting happiness and financial security. To truly achieve financial security, one must focus on building a strong foundation through disciplined saving, responsible spending, and wise investments. It involves making informed decisions based on long-term goals and values rather than succumbing to the allure of immediate gratification. Financial security comes from living within one's means, saving for the future, and being mindful of both current and future financial needs. When the goal shifts from acquiring wealth for the sake of material indulgence to attaining financial security, a transformation occurs. Financial security encompasses stability, freedom, and peace of mind. It allows for the pursuit of a good life based on personal values, experiences, and well-being rather than superficial possessions. It means having the flexibility to make choices aligned with one's passions, goals, and relationships. Moreover, focusing on financial security encourages a mindset of sustainability and responsible money management. It promotes building wealth through prudent investments, diversifying income streams, and prioritizing long-term financial well-being over short-term gratification. The quote reminds us that the pursuit of financial security is not synonymous with an extravagant lifestyle. By shifting our motives from materialistic consumption to a focus on building a solid financial foundation, we can attain true financial security and lead a meaningful and fulfilling life. It is through wise financial choices, prudent planning, and living in alignment with our values that we can achieve a harmonious balance between financial security and a good life. This quote resonates with me on a personal level, as it aligns with my own beliefs about financial well-being and the pursuit of a fulfilling life. The quote emphasizes the importance of having a clear and purpose-driven goal when it comes to finances. It suggests that if the primary motive is simply to accumulate wealth for the purpose of indulging in a materialistic and extravagant lifestyle, true financial security and lasting happiness will remain elusive. I strongly agree with this sentiment, as I believe that financial security is not solely defined by the amount of money one possesses or the material possessions one can acquire. Instead, it is a state of stability, peace of mind, and the ability to meet current and future financial needs. Financial security is built upon a foundation of prudent financial management, disciplined saving, and responsible spending. Personally, I have always viewed money as a means to an end rather than an end in itself. My goal has been to achieve financial security in order to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. This quote resonates with me because it reinforces the idea that financial security should be pursued as a means to support my values, aspirations, and overall well-being, rather than an end to simply accumulating wealth for materialistic purposes. By focusing on financial security, I am motivated to make informed financial decisions, prioritize saving for the future, and maintain a balanced approach to spending. This mindset has allowed me to develop a healthy relationship with money, valuing experiences, personal growth, and the well-being of myself and others over the pursuit of material possessions. Additionally, this quote encourages me to reflect on the importance of aligning my financial motives with my values and long-term goals. It serves as a reminder to resist the temptations of consumerism and to prioritize sustainable financial practices that support a good life in a broader sense - one that encompasses meaningful relationships, personal growth, health, and experiences that bring genuine joy and fulfillment. To sum up all that has been stated, the quote serves as a powerful reminder of the significance of aligning financial goals with meaningful motives. It reinforces my belief that financial security should be pursued not for the sake of material indulgence, but as a means to support a purposeful and satisfying life. By adhering to this mindset, I am driven to make prudent financial decisions, cultivate a healthy relationship with money, and pursue a balanced and fulfilling life that extends beyond the accumulation of wealth.
Walking In Authority International Ministry Scholarship
I am inspired by the possibility of my dream of better health outcomes becoming a reality. During my time learning for my Certified Nursing Assistant certification, I had the opportunity to interact with and assist many residents who were in need of help and required assistance. One particular experience that stands out to me was when I met a resident named Xiu who had been in the home for years and her family never visited her. She was quiet and reserved, but had a kind demeanor and seemed appreciative of any assistance she received and spoke no English. I searched the back of her wheelchair for the pamphlet with common words in Mandarin and their translation in English, which all residents who don’t speak English have, and to my dismay I saw that the Mandarin words were not given a phonetic spelling so there was no way I could use the pamphlet. Instinctively, I opened the google translate app on my phone and introduced myself to Xiu. Her eyes widened, and she stared at me with a smile. I could see the sense of hope and delight beginning to return to Xiu’s eyes as we worked together, and it was clear that she was happy to be talking with someone. This experience of helping Xiu not only impacted her life but mine as well. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality of retirement homes and the importance of providing assistance to those in need. It also gave me a sense of purpose and fulfillment, knowing that I was able to make a positive difference in someone's life even if that is just by taking the time to have a discussion. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of community and the importance of helping those in need. It also motivated me to continue volunteering and finding ways to make a positive impact on the lives of others. I realized the importance of Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) as well, as CNAs play a crucial role in providing basic care to patients in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities. I realized this experience would alter my path forever as being part of an underrepresented minority population means you may be one of few individuals in your community or field who share your background. This can lead to language barriers restricting communication which can be crucial for one's health. In such cases, your presence and visibility can serve as a source of inspiration for others who may be facing similar obstacles. Seeing someone who looks like you succeed can instill hope and motivate others to pursue their goals. I want to raise awareness about social issues, promote inclusivity, and fight against discrimination, so I can contribute to positive change. The importance of being an underrepresented minority in healthcare lies in the ability to address the disparities and inequities that exist within the healthcare system. By representing and understanding the needs of marginalized communities, individuals from underrepresented backgrounds can contribute to delivering culturally competent care and improving health outcomes. Moreover, their presence can inspire trust and confidence among patients who may have experienced historical injustices or felt marginalized in healthcare settings. Recognizing one's own education and privilege can be a powerful tool to benefit society. By leveraging their education and privilege, individuals can work towards creating a more equitable healthcare system that addresses the unique needs of underrepresented communities and improves health outcomes for all.

Mathematics is an essential discipline that plays a vital role in our daily lives. From simple calculations like counting money to complex computations used in engineering and science, math is everywhere. One of the primary reasons math is so important to me is the stability that numbers provide as numbers offer a level of certainty and consistency in the world. One way in which math provides stability is through the use of mathematical models. Mathematical models are used in a variety of fields, from finance to engineering, to simulate real-world scenarios and predict outcomes. These models use mathematical equations to represent complex systems, and they allow us to make predictions and decisions based on mathematical analysis rather than guesswork. For example, in finance, mathematical models are used to predict market trends and identify profitable investments, while in engineering, models are used to design and test new products before they are produced. By using mathematical models, we can make more informed decisions and ensure greater stability in our daily lives. Another way in which math provides stability is through its ability to represent and analyze data. In today's world, we are inundated with data from various sources, from social media to scientific studies. The ability to analyze and make sense of this data is critical for making informed decisions. By using statistical analysis and other mathematical tools, we can identify trends and patterns in data, which can inform our decisions and help us to make more informed choices. For example, data analysis is used in healthcare to identify the causes of disease outbreaks, while in marketing, it is used to understand consumer behavior and preferences. Finally, math is important in daily life because it provides a level of precision and accuracy that is essential in many fields. In fields such as medicine, engineering, and science, even the smallest miscalculation can have severe consequences. By using math to ensure accuracy and precision, we can reduce the likelihood of errors and ensure that our decisions are based on solid data. For example, in medicine, math is used to calculate drug dosages, while in engineering, it is used to design and build structures that are safe and reliable. I love math because it helps me measure accuracy and precision, which we can use to ensure greater stability in our daily lives.

Creating a positive environmental impact on your community is one of the most impactful and enriching things one can do during their lifetime. In the context of wellness, I want to incorporate sustainable practices into my daily life by prioritizing eco-friendly and organic products, supporting local farmers and businesses, and reducing my carbon footprint by walking, biking, or taking public transport. I have begun to try searching for local and seasonal produce because of its environmental benefits. In today's digital age, technology has become an integral part of our daily lives. However, excessive use of technology can have a negative impact on the environment. We can reduce our screen time by taking regular breaks and limiting the time spent on our electronic devices. This not only helps to reduce energy consumption but also promotes a healthy lifestyle. Nothing can truly replace taking walks outside and interacting with other faces in person. Another thing we can do to create a positive environmental impact is to choose to use energy-efficient devices and appliances that consume less electricity. We can also turn off electronic devices when not in use, as they continue to consume energy in standby mode. We should also reduce our reliance on single-use electronics by opting for reusable or multi-purpose devices. For example, instead of using a printer for every document, we can choose to share documents electronically or use a reusable notebook instead of paper. Fourthly, we can participate in e-waste recycling programs that aim to properly dispose of electronic devices, which can be harmful to the environment if not disposed of correctly. In the culinary industry, consumers are making a positive impact by choosing to eat sustainably and reducing their meat consumption. Chefs are composting food scraps and other organic waste, which reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and creates nutrient-rich soil that can be used to grow more food. I hope to educate those in my community about composting and the benefits it can have on food quality and sustainability for the local ecosystem. In finance, organizations can support sustainable investments and divest from companies with high carbon emissions. They can also provide financial incentives for individuals and businesses that adopt sustainable practices, such as investing in renewable energy or reducing waste. In finance, I want to learn more about how redlining policies have affected local communities negatively and what we can do to counteract that from an economic perspective. Acknowledging the negative impacts is not enough, and I hope I can help my community become a more equitable place to live. In the hospitality industry, hotels and resorts can adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing water usage, using non-toxic cleaning products and promoting recycling. They can also educate guests on sustainable practices and encourage them to reduce their environmental impact. I want to help endorse policies that advocate for workers’ rights and make sure employees are not forced to work in adverse working conditions. In marketing, companies can promote sustainable products and practices to consumers, raise awareness about environmental issues, and encourage people to take action to reduce their impact on the environment. I believe with marketing, I want to help make sure that all people are represented and not just one demographic. Representation in the media matters immensely and normalizing a diverse community allows for many negative stereotypes and misconceptions to be debunked. By incorporating sustainable practices into our daily lives and supporting organizations that prioritize the environment, we can make a significant impact on the health of our planet.

One day, he came running up to me with a big smile on his face, holding a job offer in his hand. He had been hired as a dishwasher at a local restaurant, and he was overjoyed to have a steady income and a sense of purpose. This experience of helping Xiu not only impacted her life but mine as well. It opened my eyes to the harsh reality of retirement homes and the importance of providing assistance to those in need. Taking care of my mental health allows me to overcome stress, build resilience, and maintain a positive and healthy outlook on life. It also helps me to perform better academically, socially, and professionally. Mental health is a serious issue for all college students, but those from low-income backgrounds may face unique challenges that can exacerbate mental health problems. As a pre-med student who’s the first in my family to attend university in the US, college can be academically challenging and frustrating. Low-income students such as myself may feel additional pressure to succeed due to the financial burden of paying for school. This pressure can contribute to stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues. To maintain my mental wellness, I utilize various practices that work for me. These activities help me to recharge and rejuvenate, which is crucial for maintaining good mental health and also a healthy academic and social life balance. As the first person in my family to attend university, financial stress is something my family and I experience regularly, either from paying for college itself or from contributing to other family expenses. Financial stress can exacerbate mental health issues and can make it difficult for students such as myself to focus on their studies and truly engage in the learning process. Academic Liberty & Free Speech Scholarship
Free speech is a fundamental right that is essential for the intellectual and personal development of all American college students. In a college environment, free speech encourages students to engage in critical thinking, learn from diverse perspectives, and develop their own ideas and opinions. When students are exposed to a wide range of ideas and viewpoints, they are challenged to think critically and evaluate their own beliefs. They are exposed to different perspectives, which helps them to expand their knowledge and develop a more nuanced understanding of complex issues. I understood this first-hand when I took a class dissecting the impact the Black Lives Matter Movement has on American culture and how racism still manifests itself within the judicial and legislative frameworks of our country. I was surprised to see that some of my peers who were from different countries openly said that the material was “boring” and that Americans were being overdramatic. However, I realized that this exposure to diverse ideas also helps students to develop empathy and understanding towards those with different backgrounds and experiences as by the end of the class they understood why history still effects from hundreds of years ago can still play a role in society today. In addition, free speech promotes the development of personal autonomy and self-expression. When students are free to express their own opinions and ideas, they develop a sense of agency and confidence in their own voices. This leads to the development of a strong personal identity and a sense of purpose in life. As part of the Events Committee for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, I saw firsthand how the topic of suicide is not spoken about around campus despite many people knowing or having experienced suicidal ideations. By helping organize an outdoor walk where the local community can share their experiences about suicide and helping fundraising efforts, I realized that free speech is not only about the intellectual development of college students, but personal development as well. It is essential to preserve the right to free speech on college campuses because it is a cornerstone of a democratic society. Without the freedom to express ideas and opinions, there can be no meaningful dialogue, and progress and innovation can be stifled. A free exchange of ideas is necessary for the advancement of knowledge and the betterment of society. As a student studying Biopsychology, Cognition, Neuroscience, Public Health, and Business I am committed to advancing diversity of thought and preserving free speech on campus. In my field of study, I am exposed to a wide range of perspectives and ideas, and I am encouraged to engage in critical thinking and independent research. In my extracurricular activities, I am part of a community that values open dialogue and the free exchange of ideas. I believe that it is important to promote diversity of thought by encouraging respectful dialogue and creating opportunities for students to engage with those who hold different viewpoints. This includes hosting guest speakers, facilitating debates, and promoting cultural exchange. By promoting diversity of thought, we can create a more inclusive and tolerant campus community. In addition, I am committed to promoting critical thinking by encouraging students to evaluate the evidence and think for themselves by encouraging students to engage in independent research and fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and inquiry. I believe that the preservation of free speech is crucial for the intellectual and personal development of American college students. I am committed to promoting diversity of thought and critical thinking and preserving free speech on campus.

    Bold Climate Changemakers Scholarship
Having a positive impact on the climate is something I believe is paramount to the sustainability of our planet. I avoid meat and dairy products because of their disastrous environmental impact and try to use fresh, seasonal produce that is grown locally. I also try to bike or walk to nearby stores instead of driving as it helps reduce the gas emissions I contribute to global warming. Not only do cars contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, but air pollution caused by exhaust fumes from traffic poses a serious threat to public health. I've also learned to use water more efficiently and compost food scraps from the kitchen. I've also planted a lot of native flower species in my garden to attract pollinators which helps the local ecosystem. I also have cut on my consumption of plastic waste and single-use items. I've also given my friends and family some of the tips and tricks I use to be more environmentally conscious as I believe the more people who can make a positive impact on the climate will initiate change. I also have realized that unplugging appliances when I'm not using them saves countless amounts of energy and I make sure to wash my clothes in cold water. Although I'm trying my best to make sure to have a positive impact on the world, I know that an individual can only do so much which is why I've also held my local leaders accountable by advocating for changes I want to see in my community such as the increased presence of recycling bins and community compost bins.

Passion has helped me navigate the pandemic's hardest and most revealing moments as well as crystalize my interest in the medical field. It was a regular day at work at a COVID testing center in the Southside of Chicago, and I was helping a family of three with their rapid test. “Plop” I released a drop of the mom’s test onto the rapid antigen test. My face paled as I saw two lines slowly fade into existence. My passion in the medical field came into a direct confrontation with my consciousness as I debated how I was going to tell the family about the results. My mind raced with thoughts. This was the first positive rapid test I’d administered. How do I tell her that she tested positive? How do I tell this family that their worst fear came true? Never in my life had I been tasked with such a responsibility, and I questioned how I was going to approach her. Suddenly, while I was gathering my words, she came up to me and asked me whether the results had come through, as she noticed I was standing still. I told her about her positive result and the proper quarantining and social distancing protocols that she had to undertake in order to protect herself and others around her. She looked at me baffled. I comforted her and proceeded to test the rest of her family. They all came out positive-- even their three-year-old daughter. I gave them proper manuals and showed them the phone number for nearby clinics that can help them if their conditions worsened. After they left, I went outside the backdoor and sat in the alley, and took a deep breath. I felt like a huge boulder had been placed on my chest, and it suddenly disappeared. While reflecting on that interaction, I realized that tough situations such as this are a common occurrence in medical settings and can help families plan their future better. This tough responsibility has a moral obligation that needed to be carried out to help provide clarity and being the messenger of this news was not an easy task, but an essential one I've found passion in. This realization served as a catalyst for my decision to work in emergency pediatric medicine as these stressful situations can be life-changing for individuals and it is the responsibility of healthcare workers to ease the process. Taking advantage of the plethora of opportunities by being granted enough to receive an education, I know I will be opening up myself to learn more valuable lessons and become the best caretaker I can be and this is a goal I'm very passionate about. Situations like these are opportunities for me to reflect and learn from, and I am grateful and humbled by them every day.

Education is a key principle in my life, as I am always learning new aspects of our world. From attending a high school with students from around the world to enjoying food from restaurants of different cuisines, I have always been thankful for the diverse community that I live in. However, I know that this keystone can also result in stereotypes and hate crimes. In an attempt to combat and expose this dark side of diversity, I hosted a discussion during a weekly Foreign Exchange Club meeting. During this conversation, students and teachers discussed racial and ethnic microaggressions that affect their experience in school and the over-sexualization of Asian women in media, the parallels between colorism in postcolonial countries, and the stigma against indigenous people for speaking their native languages. These realizations made me realize the value of understanding others’ experiences. What stood out to me from this interaction was how all of our ordeals allowed us to connect and see the trivial nature of judging people by their looks, cuisine, and language. In such a cosmopolitan society, I realized, we should be working to highlight the best of our cultures, and not focus on criticizing each other. As a dedicated member of my school’s service club, I have experience with organizing fundraisers and spreading the word for attracting more volunteers and donors. These experiences make me a great candidate for the Annika Rodriguez scholars program as I am able to uphold the ideals of bringing diverse groups together and celebrating their cultures. As a member of Health Occupations Students of America, I’ve demonstrated academic excellence by overcoming significant obstacles to place at the state conference. When I signed up for the Medical Terminology and Home Health Aide event, the supplemental textbooks and materials were too expensive, and my teacher told me that she couldn’t find any free resources to give me to use instead. Feeling unfazed, I decided to go to multiple local libraries and books encompassing the same topic and read them cover to cover. After taking extensive notes, and studying flashcards for hours on end, my hard work paid off immensely as I placed in the top 10 in the state for all my events demonstrating academic excellence. I’ve also upheld the core pillar of diversity by advocating for those with infertility in the Biomedical Debate competitive event; learning about the struggles those face with infertility and how new gene-editing technology like CRISPR can potentially help those in need people revealed to me how diversity can be used a tool to help us all grow and unite. I’ve shown leadership and partaken in community service by being president of the Foreign Exchange Club, where I help plan club meetings weekly and volunteer in the neighborhood at my local cat shelter and clean roads. Education has shaped my worldview in a profound way, from crystallizing my understanding of disparities within our planet to achieving my academic goals, I will always be grateful for my privilege to obtain an education.

As the Secretary of my school’s Ecology Club, I’ve been able to give back to my community in a meaningful and thoughtful way. The most influential event I helped coordinate was the video and infographic on recycling I created to educate my peers at my school on how to dispose of their waste conscientiously. The school had paid for recycling bins, but students were confused about how to properly dispose of their waste. Creating this video taught me how seemingly small actions can have an enduring impact, as after the infographic was released we saw major improvements in the use of recycling bins at school. As a leader in this initiative, I’ve realized that I’m a good fit for the Danforth Scholars Program as I will be able to access a student body of like-minded peers to cultivate new friendships and bonds that can help me produce globally-inspired works. A showing of my interests and character is my participation in Foreign Exchange Club. Not only have I learned about traditions, and languages, and nurtured international friendships, but I have also expanded my mind to account for multicultural perspectives. Apart from learning about other cultures, Foreign Exchange Club also provides a safe space for people of all backgrounds to express their microaggressions and frustrations with our administration, while also providing a space where I can speak freely. For instance, we had a discussion on racism and stereotypes and my teacher even pitched in about how he felt as if everyone forced him to identify as one race even though he was multiracial. This conversation connected with me because I realized how people’s assumptions of me as an Asian had the same restricting manner as him and many other club members. By serving my community and learning to understand their perspectives, I have seen parallels within society such as the insecurities that sprout harmful stereotypes and unique multilingual friendships form. This has allowed me to gain an understanding of other people’s lifestyles and circumstances. After four years of dedicated membership, I have been the president of this club for 2 years. This role includes hosting German High School Students and planning community outreach events. As President, I have coordinated successful events such as a virtual exchange trip with German students through Zoom and an event called I-Compete where we host kids from low-income neighborhoods and teach them about different cultures. By acting as a mentor and providing guidance to my community, I have encouraged others to develop a passion for other cultures and perspectives. Without this community, I never would have discovered my true passion for compassion, or realized the duality of the assumptions that confine sections of society from each other. Being a leader is important for me because it allows me to help make an impact on the community and combine my goals with those around me to initiate positive change.
