    Kalia D. Davis Memorial Scholarship
My name is Iyanuoluwa Adeniyi, and I am an undergraduate student studying computer science. I am also a first generation college student, an immigrant from Nigeria, a United States Army service member, an athlete, and an active volunteer in my community. Every part of my life has been shaped by hard work, sacrifice, and the belief that excellence is not optional when opportunity is rare. Sports taught me discipline before I ever wore a uniform or stepped into a college classroom. As a soccer athlete, I learned consistency, teamwork, and perseverance. There were days when practice was exhausting, when losses were discouraging, and when balancing academics and athletics felt overwhelming. But I learned to show up anyway. Sports taught me how to push through discomfort and how to support others even when I was tired. Those lessons still guide me today. Service has always been a part of who I am. I have volunteered through my church and school, helping lead activities for younger students and supporting community events. Many of the students I worked with needed guidance and encouragement more than anything else. Being someone they could rely on taught me responsibility and compassion. I learned that leadership is not about recognition, but about being present for others. My journey has not been easy financially. My parents work low income jobs and made enormous sacrifices to bring me to the United States so I could have access to education. As a student, I carry that responsibility every day. I balance academics, military service, and financial stress, often worrying about tuition more than coursework. There are moments when the pressure feels heavy, but I refuse to let circumstances define my limits. Kalia D. Davis’s legacy deeply resonates with me because she represented excellence in every area of life. She was a student, an athlete, a leader, and a source of encouragement to others. I strive to live with that same standard. I believe in doing my best even when no one is watching, in lifting others while pursuing my goals, and in treating every opportunity as something sacred. This scholarship would help me continue my education without the constant fear of financial interruption. It would allow me to focus more fully on learning, serving, and growing rather than worrying about how to afford the next semester. The support would ease the burden on my family and give me the stability I need to continue striving for excellence. More than financial assistance, this scholarship represents belief. Belief in students who work hard, serve others, and refuse to give up. I am committed to honoring that belief by continuing to grow as a student, athlete, and servant to my community. Carrying forward a legacy of living, loving, laughing, learning, and building something meaningful with my life is not just my goal. It is my responsibility.
Hearts on Sleeves, Minds in College Scholarship
For a long time, my voice felt small. As a Black immigrant student from Nigeria, speaking up in classrooms, meetings, and unfamiliar spaces in the United States felt intimidating. My accent made me self conscious. I worried that my words would be misunderstood or dismissed before I even finished speaking. There were many moments when I had something important to say but chose silence instead, believing it was safer. One moment changed that. During my first year of college, I was working on a group project that required everyone to contribute ideas. I noticed a serious flaw in our approach that would cause the entire project to fail, but I hesitated to speak. My heart was racing. I felt the familiar fear of sounding different or being judged. But I also knew that staying quiet would hurt the entire group. I finally raised my hand and explained my concern clearly and calmly. To my surprise, the room went quiet, not with judgment, but with attention. My teammates listened. They asked questions. They agreed. That moment taught me that my voice had value, even when it trembled. Serving in the United States Army further reshaped my relationship with communication. In the military, silence can be dangerous. Clear communication builds trust, safety, and leadership. I learned that confidence does not come from sounding perfect, but from being honest, prepared, and intentional. There were times I had to speak up for others, give instructions, or admit when I needed help. Each experience strengthened my belief that communication is not just about speaking, but about responsibility. As a computer science student, communication has become just as important as technical skill. Writing code is one form of communication, but explaining ideas, collaborating with others, and advocating for yourself requires courage. Being a low income student means I often have to speak up to ask for help, resources, or understanding. That is not easy, but it has taught me resilience. Every time I choose my voice over fear, I grow. I now understand that my background is not a weakness. It is a source of strength. My experiences allow me to connect with others who feel unseen or unheard. I want to use my voice to mentor students from underrepresented communities, especially those balancing education with financial stress or cultural transition. I want to speak openly about struggle so others know they are not alone. In the future, I hope to use my voice in technology spaces that often lack diversity. I want to advocate for ethical systems, inclusive design, and opportunities for those who are overlooked. Communication has given me confidence. Confidence has given me purpose. This scholarship represents more than financial support. It represents belief in voices like mine. Voices shaped by challenge, strengthened by service, and committed to creating impact. I am still learning, but I no longer hide my voice. I am learning to use it with courage, clarity, and heart.
    Ben Brock Memorial Scholarship
My interest in computer science began long before I understood what the field was called. Growing up in Nigeria, access to technology was limited, but whenever I encountered a computer, I was fascinated by how something silent and lifeless could solve problems, store knowledge, and connect people across the world. When my family immigrated to the United States, technology became my bridge to opportunity. I taught myself basic programming concepts, explored how systems worked, and slowly realized that computer science was not just a subject, but a tool to change lives. As a first generation college student studying computer science, I carry the weight of my family’s sacrifices with me every day. My parents worked low income jobs and gave up stability so I could pursue education in a country where nothing was guaranteed. That reality fuels my ambition. I do not study simply to earn a degree. I study because failure is not an option when others have given so much for you to stand where you are. My connection to the military deepened my passion for learning and problem solving. I currently serve in the United States Army, where discipline, adaptability, and continuous learning are essential. Military service taught me that knowledge is never static. Systems evolve, environments change, and success depends on your willingness to keep learning. That mindset mirrors computer science, where technologies constantly advance and improvement is a lifelong commitment. Serving alongside people from diverse backgrounds also showed me the importance of mentorship, teamwork, and shared growth, values that Ben Brock embodied. In the Army, I have seen firsthand how technology supports operations, communication, and security. This experience strengthened my desire to pursue computer science with purpose. I want to build systems that are reliable, ethical, and designed to protect people. Whether through cybersecurity, data systems, or software development, I aim to use my skills to support communities and institutions that depend on strong technological foundations. Being both a student and a service member is challenging, especially financially. Balancing tuition, living expenses, and military responsibilities is overwhelming at times. There are moments when exhaustion sets in, when I question how much longer I can stretch limited resources. This scholarship would directly support my education by easing the financial burden that constantly competes with my focus and energy. It would allow me to dedicate myself more fully to learning and growth rather than survival. Ben Brock’s legacy as a lifelong learner and mentor deeply resonates with me. Like him, I believe knowledge should be shared, not guarded. I aspire to mentor younger students, especially those from immigrant and military backgrounds, and show them that persistence and curiosity can overcome barriers. Education has given me direction, the military has given me discipline, and together they are shaping me into someone committed to service through learning. This scholarship would not only help me continue my education. It would affirm that my journey as a student, a soldier, and a lifelong learner is worth investing in.
    John Woolley Memorial Scholarship
My name is Iyanuoluwa Adeniyi, and I am a first generation college student, an immigrant from Nigeria, a computer science major, and a United States Army service member. What makes me unique is not just the path I am on, but the weight I carry while walking it. Every step of my journey is built on sacrifice, resilience, and a deep desire to build a meaningful future not only for myself, but for my family and community. My parents worked low income jobs and made one of the hardest decisions of their lives by leaving everything familiar so that I could have access to opportunity in the United States. That sacrifice has shaped how I see the world. I do not take education lightly. I see it as a responsibility. Being in college while serving in the Army has taught me discipline, focus, and humility. It has also shown me the importance of balance. When I am overwhelmed by coursework, financial stress, or military obligations, I turn to nature for clarity. Long walks, quiet moments outside, and observing the world around me help me reset and remember why I started. I am studying computer science because I believe technology can be used to solve real human problems. I am especially interested in using computing to improve systems that affect everyday life, from security to access to information. Outside of coding, I have a creative side that finds expression through visual art and photography inspired by nature. Capturing moments, patterns, and landscapes helps me slow down and appreciate the beauty that still exists even during difficult seasons. That perspective keeps me grounded and motivated. What truly sets me apart is that I am building my future without a safety net. There is no generational wealth behind me, no academic roadmap from family members who have done this before. Tuition is a constant worry. Each semester feels like a test of endurance as much as intelligence. There are moments when I question whether I can continue, not because I lack ability, but because of cost. This scholarship would not just support my education. It would give me breathing room. It would allow me to focus fully on learning, growing, and giving back rather than constantly worrying about how to afford the next term. If awarded this scholarship, the funds would go directly toward my tuition and academic expenses. More importantly, it would reaffirm that my story matters and that perseverance is seen. One day, I hope to use my degree to create technology that serves people ethically and thoughtfully, and to mentor students who come from backgrounds like mine so they know they are not alone. This opportunity represents more than financial support. It represents belief. And belief, when paired with hard work, can change a life.
    Lyndsey Scott Coding+ Scholarship
Computer science has always fascinated me because it combines logic, creativity, and problem-solving in a way that can change the world. As a first-generation college student from Nigeria, I have seen how access to technology and education can open doors that were once unimaginable. I am currently pursuing a degree in computer science, and my goal is to specialize in cybersecurity. As a first-generation college student and an immigrant from Nigeria, I have faced many challenges that tested my mental and emotional strength. Moving to the United States was a dream for my family, but it also brought pressure, isolation, and moments of self-doubt. Balancing the demands of school, adapting to a new culture, and managing financial uncertainty created anxiety that sometimes felt overwhelming. At times, I struggled silently, unsure how to navigate these emotions while trying to succeed academically and honor my parents’ sacrifices. My mental health journey taught me the importance of self-awareness, resilience, and seeking support when needed. I learned to recognize when stress was becoming harmful and to turn to constructive ways to cope, including prayer, meditation, and connecting with mentors and peers who understood my challenges. My faith became a guiding light, reminding me that perseverance through adversity builds strength and character. Understanding my mental health allowed me to be more patient, empathetic, and compassionate toward myself and others. These experiences have also influenced my relationships. I am more understanding of the struggles others face, and I actively try to create spaces where people feel heard and supported. At my church and in volunteer programs, I mentor younger students, encouraging them to face challenges with courage and resilience. I have witnessed the power of listening and offering guidance, and I strive to be a source of support for those navigating difficult times. My journey as an African immigrant in the United States has been filled with both opportunities and obstacles. Moving from Nigeria to pursue higher education was a dream my parents worked tirelessly to make possible, even while struggling in low-income jobs. Being far from home, navigating a new culture, and adapting to a demanding educational system tested me in ways I had never experienced before. Throughout this journey, my faith in God has been the guiding force that has helped me persevere. One of the most challenging moments in my life came when I joined the United States Army while also starting college. Balancing military responsibilities, rigorous physical training, and college coursework was overwhelming. There were days when the stress felt unbearable, and I questioned whether I could meet the expectations I had set for myself and the sacrifices my parents had made for me. During this time, I relied on prayer and reflection to find strength and clarity. My faith reminded me that God’s plan for me was greater than any single struggle, and that perseverance and trust in Him would guide me through difficult times. Faith also strengthened me when financial pressures threatened to derail my education. College tuition, living expenses, and daily necessities often felt beyond reach. Instead of giving in to despair, I turned to God for guidance and sought opportunities to overcome these challenges through scholarships, part-time work, and careful planning. My belief in God’s provision gave me hope and motivation, and it reinforced the importance of discipline, patience, and resilience in every step of my journey. Through these experiences, I learned that faith is not just about seeking help during hardships; it is about actively trusting, working hard, and serving others even when circumstances are difficult. I carry this mindset into my community involvement, volunteering at my church, mentoring younger students, and leading programs that encourage youth to develop confidence and leadership skills. Serving others through faith-inspired action has shown me the power of hope, guidance, and community in overcoming challenges. Faith has been the foundation of every step of my journey, and it inspires me to continue pushing forward, serving others, and striving for excellence despite obstacles. Relying on my faith has taught me patience, perseverance, and the importance of trusting God’s plan. It has allowed me to overcome personal, financial, and academic challenges, and it continues to guide my vision for a life of service, leadership, and impact. I am committed to honoring this guidance by giving my best in school, in the Army, and in my community, just as Nabi Nicole Grant dedicated her life to serving others through faith and passion.

    Shanique Gravely Scholarship
The event that has had the most profound impact on my life is the journey my family and I endured when we moved from Nigeria to the United States so I could pursue a better education. My parents worked tirelessly in low-income jobs, sacrificing sleep, comfort, and personal ambitions to ensure that I had opportunities they never had. Watching their struggle and unwavering dedication has shaped my character, my faith, and my goals. It was through their sacrifice that I learned the value of perseverance, the importance of education, and the responsibility of giving back to others. This experience was not easy. Adjusting to a new country, culture, and educational system was overwhelming. I faced language barriers, financial hardship, and moments of isolation as a first-generation student trying to navigate unfamiliar challenges. Yet through it all, my Christian faith has been my anchor. I learned to pray for guidance, draw strength from Scripture, and trust in God’s plan for my life. My faith taught me that challenges are opportunities to grow, and that perseverance in the face of hardship is not only possible but necessary. These lessons guided me when I joined the United States Army. Serving my country taught me discipline, resilience, and leadership in ways I never imagined. Every long day, every physically and mentally demanding task reminded me of the sacrifices my parents made and the importance of staying committed to my goals. My service also gave me a deeper understanding of community—how supporting others, mentoring peers, and leading by example can create lasting impact. I realized that service is not just about the military; it is a mindset that applies to every aspect of life, including family, education, and community involvement. Education has become the tool through which I hope to honor my family’s sacrifices and serve others. Pursuing a degree in computer science at Penn State Harrisburg has opened doors to learning, problem-solving, and creating technology that can help communities thrive. I want to use my knowledge to develop solutions in cybersecurity and software that protect people, empower underserved populations, and create safe, inclusive digital spaces. My faith, combined with my experiences as an immigrant and a soldier, drives me to ensure that the skills I acquire do not remain personal achievements but are shared for the greater good. This journey has also inspired me to create opportunities for connection and bonding within my community, much like Shanique Gravely did through her love for bringing people together. I volunteer at my church and lead mentorship programs for younger students, guiding them through academic challenges, teaching leadership skills, and encouraging them to pursue their dreams despite obstacles. I believe that creating spaces where people can support and uplift each other is just as important as personal success; it is what turns ambition into impact. The hardships my family faced, the lessons learned from military service, and the guidance of faith have all profoundly shaped who I am today. This journey has instilled in me a commitment to perseverance, service, and community. Every step I take toward my education and career is inspired by the sacrifices of those who came before me, and I hope to honor them by using my knowledge, skills, and faith to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

    Veterans Next Generation Scholarship
Growing up as the child of a veteran has profoundly shaped my understanding of service, discipline, and sacrifice, and it has inspired the path I am pursuing today. From a young age, I witnessed firsthand the challenges my parent faced after serving the United States. Their dedication to our country, despite personal hardships and the lingering effects of military life, taught me that true service requires courage, resilience, and putting the needs of others before your own. These lessons became the foundation for my own journey. My parent’s experiences instilled in me a sense of duty and responsibility that eventually led me to join the United States Army while simultaneously pursuing a degree in computer science at Penn State Harrisburg. Being the child of a veteran has instilled in me a commitment to hard work, responsibility, and making a tangible difference. Through my education, Army service, and dedication to community, I hope to honor their sacrifices and contribute meaningfully to society while forging my own path in cybersecurity.
    James T. Godwin Memorial Scholarship
My story begins with my father, a man whose quiet strength and dedication have shaped not only my life but also my decision to serve in the United States Army. Though he was not in the military himself, he instilled in me the values of discipline, perseverance, and sacrifice that are the foundation of our family. Growing up, I watched him work tirelessly in low-income jobs to provide for our family, often going without so that I could pursue my dreams. He never complained, never sought recognition, and always placed family first. One memory that stands out vividly is from when I first told my father that I wanted to pursue a career in the military while also attending college in the United States. He smiled, a mixture of pride and worry in his eyes, and told me, “Iyanuoluwa, service is about giving more than you take. It will not be easy, but it will make you stronger, and it will give you purpose.” Those words became my guiding principle. Every time I faced challenges balancing college, military training, and financial struggles, I remembered his advice and pressed on. My father also has a wonderful sense of humor, and his stories, though sometimes repeated, always left an impression. I remember one evening when I had just returned from basic training. I was exhausted and feeling homesick, but my father sat me down and began telling a story about the time he accidentally spilled an entire pot of soup during a family gathering, yet somehow turned it into a lesson about resilience. “Life will spill your soup on the floor sometimes,” he said, laughing, “but it’s what you do next that matters.” That moment, though simple and funny, taught me the importance of staying positive and finding lessons even in mistakes or hardships. Because of my father’s guidance and example, I joined the Army while pursuing my degree in computer science. His emphasis on service and perseverance became real for me in uniform, where discipline, teamwork, and commitment are not just lessons but daily practice. Every day I serve, I carry a piece of his wisdom and determination with me. His sacrifices and teachings have inspired me to aim higher, work harder, and stay focused on the future. Receiving the James T. Godwin Memorial Scholarship would honor the legacy of family, service, and resilience that my father represents in my life. It would also help me continue my education, lighten the financial burden on my parents, and allow me to focus on my studies and my service in the Army. More than that, it would be a reminder that the lessons, stories, and love passed down from my family are worth preserving and sharing through my actions. In many ways, my father’s life is a story of quiet heroism. He may not have accumulated combat hours or medals, but through his sacrifices, teachings, and humor, he has shaped a life of service and determination. I hope to honor that legacy in all I do, both as a soldier and as a student, and to carry forward the lessons he taught me: perseverance, humility, and the courage to give more than you take.

Their example taught me the meaning of perseverance, responsibility, and gratitude. From an early age, I understood that education was the key to building a life of purpose and impact, but the path to higher education in the United States was not easy. Financial challenges have been one of the greatest obstacles I have had to overcome. Tuition, living expenses, and the cost of pursuing my dreams in a foreign country often felt overwhelming. Sgt. Albert Dono Ware Memorial Scholarship
The legacy of Sgt. Albert Dono Ware represents service, sacrifice, and bravery in their truest form. While I did not personally know him, his story resonates deeply with me because it reflects the values that have defined my life as an African American immigrant, a soldier, and a college student. Sgt. Ware gave his life serving others. His courage inspires me to continue striving, even in the face of enormous challenges, to honor the sacrifices of those who came before me and support the communities that have shaped me. I was born in Nigeria, and my parents made incredible sacrifices to give me a chance at a better life in the United States. They worked tirelessly in low-income jobs, often going without so that I could have access to opportunities they never had. Their struggle and unwavering determination taught me that sacrifice is an act of love and that bravery is choosing to face uncertainty with hope. Every day, I carry the weight of their sacrifices with me in school, in life, and now in the Army. I feel a responsibility not to waste the opportunities they fought so hard to provide. Balancing college, military service, and financial hardship has been one of the hardest challenges I have faced. Tuition, housing, and the cost of living are constant pressures. There are nights when the stress feels overwhelming, but I remind myself that hardship does not define me—how I respond to it does. Joining the United States Army strengthened this mindset. The Army taught me discipline, accountability, and resilience. It showed me that service often comes with sacrifice, and that true bravery is continuing to show up for others even when it is difficult or uncomfortable. These values guide how I approach both my studies in computer science and my role in the military. In school, I push myself to excel despite financial and time pressures, knowing that education is the key to creating a better future. In the Army, I lead by example, helping my peers and putting the mission and the team above personal comfort. Like Sgt. Ware, I have learned that impact is measured not by recognition, but by how many lives you lift and the support you give to others. Sgt. Ware’s legacy also inspires my vision for addressing the challenges facing the African diaspora in the United States. Many African American and immigrant communities face systemic barriers in education, career opportunities, and access to resources. These inequities are not caused by a lack of talent or ambition, but by a lack of access, mentorship, and support. I believe that community programs, scholarships, mentorship, and policy reform are critical to opening doors for students like me. Education, paired with guidance and opportunity, is a powerful tool for breaking cycles of inequality. Key stakeholders in this effort include educational institutions, community organizations, policymakers, and veterans who can provide mentorship and guidance. As someone who has personally benefited from the sacrifices of my parents, the support of my military mentors, and my own determination, I understand the transformative power of encouragement and opportunity. I want to ensure that other young people, especially from African American and immigrant communities, have access to the same. Receiving this scholarship would make an enormous difference in my life. It would ease the financial burden of tuition and allow me to focus fully on my studies and service. More importantly, it would affirm that my efforts to honor my parents’ sacrifices, serve my country, and contribute to my community are recognized and valued. This support would enable me to continue embodying the principles of service, sacrifice, and bravery that Sgt. Ware stood for, and to use my education and military experience to create meaningful change for others. Sgt. Albert Dono Ware gave his life in service to others. I cannot repay a sacrifice of that magnitude, but I can live in a way that honors his legacy. I am committed to serving, learning, and giving back, and this scholarship would provide the opportunity to continue that work with greater focus, impact, and hope.
    David G. Sutton Memorial Scholarship
One coach who profoundly impacted my life taught me that true strength is revealed not in how loudly you lead, but in how deeply you care. During my years as a student athlete, there were moments when the pressure of expectations, performance, and life outside of sports felt overwhelming. In those moments, my coach became more than someone who drew plays or ran drills. He became a mentor who believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself. He was demanding and held us to high standards, but his toughness was always rooted in genuine concern. Practices were intense, and mistakes were never ignored, yet correction always came with encouragement. He pushed us to be disciplined, accountable, and resilient, while reminding us that our value extended far beyond the scoreboard. That balance of firmness and compassion left a lasting impression on me and reshaped the way I approach challenges. One experience stands out vividly. After a difficult performance, I felt defeated and questioned my abilities. Instead of criticizing me publicly or letting me sit in disappointment, my coach pulled me aside. He told me that setbacks do not define character. Responses do. He challenged me to respond with effort, leadership, and humility. That moment changed how I saw adversity. I learned that failure is not the end, but an opportunity to grow stronger. These lessons reflect the ideals that made Dave Sutton one in a million. Like Dave, my coach embodied a fighting spirit paired with genuine care for the people he led. Inspired by this example, I strive to lift others up whenever I can. As a teammate, I encourage those who are struggling, celebrate the success of others, and lead through consistency and effort rather than words. I understand how powerful it is to feel supported, especially in moments of doubt, and I aim to be that source of support for those around me. The values I learned through athletics have followed me beyond the field. Discipline, teamwork, and resilience now guide how I approach my education and personal responsibilities. I carry the belief that leadership means serving others and that true impact comes from helping people recognize their own potential. I was honored to receive this scholarship previously, and it served as a powerful reminder that character and perseverance matter. Since then, I have continued to grow as both a student and a leader, striving each day to live out the principles this scholarship represents. Applying again is not about repeating a past achievement, but about demonstrating continued commitment to the fighting spirit, compassion, and encouragement that defined Dave Sutton’s life. I hope to continue honoring his legacy by leading with heart, resilience, and unwavering support for others.
Pierson Family Scholarship for U.S. Studies
I am from Nigeria, where my family and community teach me that education is the way to find good opportunities and make a long impact. My family is not rich, and my parents work hard in small jobs to support us. Even though they try a lot, money problems are always there. From a young age, I know that to go to college, I must have good grades and also be strong, sacrifice, and have determination. My school journey is shaped by these things. Even when I have few resources, my goals are big. I work hard to get good grades, keeping my GPA over 3.5 by studying discipline, using self-study, and being consistent. I often use online resources, free coding classes, and learn on my own to understand computer science more than just in class. These experiences help me learn better, solve problems alone, and adapt to difficulties—skills that are very important in technology jobs. What makes me want to go to college in the United States is how much they focus on new ideas, research, and applying knowledge in real life. In the U.S. education system, they want students to think critically and challenge limits instead of just memorizing. As someone who wants to study computer science, being in the U.S. gives me access to better technology, cybersecurity research opportunities, and a world view that I can't find easily at home. I believe this type of environment is important for building the skills I need to succeed in the fast-changing digital world. One of the hardest challenges I face right now is paying for college. My parents’ low income makes it very hard for them to support my education, and worrying about tuition puts uncertainty on my studies. This challenge is hard for my emotions and mental state, but it also makes me stronger. I learn the value of perseverance, humility, and planning. Instead of letting money problems stop me, I let them push me to find ways to succeed and to apply for scholarships like this one. I feel inspired by Bill Gates, who shows how technology can change the world when used with purpose. His commitment to innovation, solving problems, and making a global impact has made me want to use computer science not just for a job but to help others. His work teaches me that real success is when you create solutions for people in need. After I finish school, my goal is to get a good job in cybersecurity. I care about protecting digital systems, data, and infrastructures, especially since cyber threats keep increasing everywhere. In the future, I wish to use my skills to help improve global cybersecurity and eventually support technology and education in communities that need it. Getting this scholarship would really help with my financial stress and let me focus more on my studies and career. More importantly, it would be an investment in a student determined to turn hardships into positive impact.

River City Ringers of Omaha Scholarship
Handbell ringing has been a central part of my musical journey, offering both a unique creative outlet and a deep sense of fulfillment. Through years of performing, I have come to appreciate the artistry, coordination, and precision required in this art form. Handbell music combines technical skill with emotional expression, allowing performers to create vibrant and captivating soundscapes. This journey has inspired me to envision new ways to advance the art of handbell ringing, with aspirations to broaden its accessibility, innovate its repertoire, and build connections between handbell music and other musical genres. One of the joys of handbell ringing is the chance to play pieces that highlight the instrument’s distinct tonal beauty. Some of my favorite pieces to perform include "Fantasy on Kingsfold," arranged by Cathy Moklebust, "How Can I Keep from Singing," arranged by Arnold Sherman, and "Carol of the Bells," arranged by Kevin McChesney. "Fantasy on Kingsfold" presents a flowing melody that weaves through lush harmonies, producing an ethereal sound that captivates listeners and challenges the ringers’ musicality. This piece requires careful attention to dynamics and phrasing, allowing each musician to contribute to the music’s collective power. Similarly, "How Can I Keep from Singing" is a hymn arrangement that invites expressive playing and a great dynamic range. The music’s gradual crescendos and decrescendos bring out a profound emotional depth, making it a rewarding experience for both the performers and the audience. Finally, "Carol of the Bells" by Kevin McChesney is a classic, with rapid rhythmic patterns that demand precision and unity among the entire ensemble. It’s always a crowd-pleaser, exhilarating for ringers to perform and for audiences to hear. My experiences with these and other pieces have motivated me to think creatively about my role in the future of handbell ringing. One of my primary aspirations is to expand the accessibility and visibility of handbell music, especially for younger audiences. Handbell music is often limited to traditional or sacred settings, making it challenging to attract a broader, contemporary audience. I hope to address this by creating innovative arrangements that blend the traditional sounds of handbells with modern genres, such as pop, jazz, or even electronic music. By doing so, I believe I can inspire a new generation of musicians and listeners to discover the instrument’s unique qualities and perhaps take it up themselves. In addition to expanding my repertoire, I also aim to foster collaborative projects that integrate handbells with other instruments. Handbell ensembles often perform independently, which can limit the music’s potential reach. By collaborating with orchestras, choirs, or even contemporary bands, handbell musicians can explore new heights of musical expression, attracting diverse audiences and increasing the versatility of handbell music. Collaboration can help showcase the adaptability of handbells, making the art form more relevant and impactful in today’s diverse musical landscape. Ultimately, my goal is to advance handbell ringing by balancing its traditional roots with creative and collaborative approaches. I see this art form as one with untapped potential, rich with opportunities for growth and innovation. Through dedication to pushing the boundaries of handbell music, I hope to inspire others to appreciate and explore this unique instrument. By sharing the joy and artistry of handbell ringing with new audiences, I am committed to fostering its evolution and preserving its beauty for years to come.

I’ll never forget the day Coach Johnson pulled me aside after practice. I had just finished running laps, my legs felt like jelly, and I was convinced I would never make the varsity basketball team. Coach Johnson had a reputation for being tough but fair, and his piercing gaze had a way of making you stand at attention. "I've seen you improve every single day," he said, his booming voice echoing in the empty gym. "But you need to believe in yourself as much as I believe in you." That moment was a turning point for me. Coach Johnson's unwavering faith in my abilities made me push through my self-doubt and work harder than I ever had. Under his guidance, I not only made the varsity team but also became a starter by the end of the season. His encouragement didn't stop on the court. He checked in on my grades and even helped me prepare for college interviews, teaching me the importance of dedication and perseverance in all areas of life. Dave was a loyal friend to those who knew him, had a huge heart, a booming voice, a never-ending wit, and an amazing sense of humor. He was an athlete, but coaching was always his calling. Throughout his life, Dave coached all levels of basketball, baseball, and football. He was a tough coach with a huge heart who always tried to get the best out of his kids and lift them up both on and off the field. These are the qualities I strive to emulate in my own life. Like Dave, I believe in the power of lifting others up and helping them see their potential. As a volunteer youth basketball coach, I focus on building my players' confidence and resilience. I encourage them to embrace challenges, just as Coach Johnson encouraged me. I understand the impact a mentor can have, and I aim to be that source of support and inspiration for my team. In my academic and personal life, I embody the traits Dave valued. I approach every task with determination, whether it's studying for an exam or organizing a community event. I use humor to create a positive environment and help others feel at ease. My experiences as both a player and a coach have taught me the importance of heart, dedication, and lifting others up—values that Dave held dear and ones that I carry with me every day.

As a student, it is not uncommon to find ourselves engrossed in the pursuit of knowledge, personal growth, and academic achievements. However, it is equally important to recognize the power we possess to positively impact the lives of those around us. In this essay, I will recount an incident when I had the opportunity to extend a helping hand to someone in need during my time as a student. The incident occurred during a particularly challenging phase of my academic journey. I was taking an arduous course load while simultaneously participating in extracurricular activities and working part-time. Amidst the hustle and bustle, I noticed a fellow student, Sarah, who seemed overwhelmed and visibly fatigued. Sarah and I had become acquainted through group projects, and I knew she was usually diligent and dedicated to her studies. However, it became evident that she was struggling to maintain her usual high standards due to her then-current circumstances. Recognizing her distress, I felt compelled to reach out and lend her a helping hand. One evening, after class, I approached Sarah and asked if she would like to talk and express her concerns. She hesitated at first but eventually welcomed the opportunity to confide in someone. Listening attentively, I discovered that alongside her academic workload, Sarah was also dealing with personal difficulties at home. Her father had recently lost his job, intensifying the financial strain on their family. Impressed by Sarah's resilience, I admired her determination to balance her responsibilities despite these challenges. However, I also realized that she needed support, both emotionally and academically, to overcome her current situation. Being aware of the resources available on campus, I suggested visiting the Student Support Services office together. Together, we visited the office and explained Sarah's situation to the staff. They were empathetic and understanding and helped Sarah access various resources to alleviate her financial burden. Additionally, they provided her with information on academic support, such as tutoring services, study groups, and professors' office hours, which could enhance her learning experience. As Sarah began to find solace in the support she received, I recognized that there was still more I could do to assist her. Drawing upon my own experiences, I prepared a study schedule tailored to her needs, incorporating her course requirements and extracurricular commitments. I also encouraged her to seek help from her professors and actively participate in study groups where she could seek guidance and collaborate with her peers. Over the following weeks, Sarah's academic performance improved significantly, and her confidence gradually resurfaced. She was grateful for the support she had received and expressed her heartfelt appreciation to me. Witnessing her transformation and renewed motivation to succeed was an immensely gratifying experience Helping Sarah during that challenging time reinforced my belief that as students, we have the ability to make a positive impact on the lives of those around us. By recognizing signs of distress, reaching out, and offering assistance, we can be instrumental in navigating the difficulties that others face. The experience fostered a sense of compassion and empathy within me, reinforcing the importance of lending a helping hand whenever possible.

Music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have been actively involved in different musical experiences, from singing in a choir to playing various instruments. However, one of the most unique and enriching musical experiences I have had is playing handbells. Handbells have given me the opportunity to express myself musically in a completely different way, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and beauty of handbell ringing. I started playing handbells in high school as part of our school's music program. It was a completely new experience for me, and I was immediately drawn to the unique sound and potential for creating beautiful music. I remember feeling a sense of accomplishment when I achieved the right coordination and technique to produce the desired sound. Throughout my time in the handbell ensemble, I have had the opportunity to play a wide variety of music, from traditional hymns to contemporary arrangements. Some of the pieces I have enjoyed playing include "Carol of the Bells" arranged by Michael Ryan and "Amazing Grace" arranged by Kevin McChesney. These pieces have been not only enjoyable to play but also incredibly impactful to perform. In addition to playing handbells in my school's ensemble, I have also participated in handbell workshops and seminars to further develop my skills. These experiences have allowed me to learn new techniques and gain valuable insight into the art of handbell ringing. I have also had the opportunity to collaborate with other musicians and ensembles, which has been incredibly rewarding and has expanded my musical horizons. As I look to the future, my aspirations are to advance the art of handbell ringing by continuing to hone my skills and expand my musical knowledge. I am eager to explore new techniques and approaches to handbell ringing, and I hope to contribute to the advancement of the art form through collaboration with other musicians and ensembles. Additionally, I am passionate about introducing handbell ringing to new audiences and promoting its unique and enriching qualities. One specific piece that has left a lasting impression on me is "The Phantom of the Opera Medley" arranged by Hart Morris. The intricate and haunting melodies of this piece have challenged me as a handbell ringer and have pushed me to reach new heights in my musical abilities. I aspire to continue exploring and performing pieces like this that push the boundaries of what is possible with handbells. In conclusion, my musical experience, particularly with handbells, has been incredibly rewarding and has enriched my life in numerous ways. I am committed to advancing the art of handbell ringing by expanding my skills, collaborating with other musicians, and introducing new audiences to the beauty and complexity of handbell music. I am excited to see where my musical journey takes me and look forward to further contributing to the advancement of handbell ringing.
