Bio

My name is Ivy McQuain and I am applying for scholarships because it is my life’s goal to complete my final degree, DBA, because I promised my mother I would. I thought I would have time but she passed during the pandemic so she’ll never see me complete the degree. I’m passionate about business and my granddaughter. She’s an amazing little girl with so much personality and life. I want her to know the skies are the limit. I believe in a great candidate because I desire to teach on a collegiate level helping students know their potential through business and education.

In 2020, my life took an unexpected turn when my mother passed away during the pandemic. This devastating loss shattered my dreams and left me in a state of deep despair. My mother and I shared an incredibly close bond; we were best friends and spent every day together. Her passing at the age of 60, just five months after her birthday, was the most challenging period of my life. The grief was overwhelming, and I found myself walking away from everything I had built and loved. The emotional toll was compounded by the financial burden of paying nearly $18,000 for her burial, as she did not have life insurance. This financial strain hindered my ability to regain the financial freedom I once enjoyed. The years following my mother's death were marked by a series of unfortunate events. I experienced major health setbacks that nearly left me paralyzed. Additionally, I endured a verbally and emotionally abusive marriage, which, thankfully, I was able to escape before it turned physical. These experiences occurred within a single year, leaving me lost and broken. However, amidst the darkness, a new light emerged in the form of my granddaughter. Her presence granted me a renewed sense of purpose and a reason to keep going. I made a promise to both the Lord and my granddaughter that I would never give up again. I shifted my focus from being a full-time entrepreneur to being there for her, ensuring she received the love and care my mother had provided for my two sons. It was essential for me to support her parents in achieving their dreams. Her mother is a professional celebrity chef, and her father is in the early stages of starting his own mobile roadside assistance company. Despite having good parents, my granddaughter needed a constant presence in her life, and I was determined to be that person for her. After three years of navigating these challenging life experiences, I decided to pursue my doctoral studies at Liberty University online. This decision was driven by my desire to set a positive example for my granddaughter and to emphasize the importance of education. She loves to learn and often encourages me by saying, "Grandma, do your homework." Her enthusiasm for learning inspires me, and I hope to one day teach her as a college professor. Although I currently work as a customer service agent for a Fortune 500 company, my aspirations extend beyond this role. I aim to become a communication manager or strategic media partner, and I have even considered reentering the entrepreneurial space. My journey has been filled with trials and tribulations, but it has also been marked by resilience and determination. The loss of my mother, the financial setback, and the health setbacks could have easily derailed my life. However, I chose to rise above these challenges and find strength in my granddaughter's love and support. My experiences have taught me the value of perseverance, the importance of family, and the power of education. Receiving this scholarship would not only alleviate some of the financial burdens I continue to face but also enable me to further my education and achieve my career goals. It would allow me to provide a better future for my granddaughter and serve as a testament to the resilience and determination that have defined my journey. I am committed to making a positive impact in my community and inspiring others who may be facing similar challenges. With this scholarship, I can continue to pursue my dreams and honor the memory of my mother, who always believed in my potential.
