Early in my experience as a child and family development major at San Diego State University, I discovered a desire for a career that would allow me to grow as I adapt to the unpredictable waves of day-to-day life. In pursuing a rigorous path in medicine, I discovered that a career in nursing makes room for personal and professional growth; which is why nurses are lifelong learners throughout their careers. The opportunity for career expansion provides me with a chance to grow within a general specialty of nursing, but also to be accessible to other specialties should there be a shift in patient demand; allowing me to continue to expand my skills and serve a larger population. Having grown up playing sports and having to work hard in a collaborative space, I appreciate how nurses work concurrently alongside other nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists, and physicians, to yield the best long-term results for patients. A strong foundation for nursing requires the quality of being a strong team member, and that is a trait that I feel I have adopted successfully. Nursing is a challenging field, filled with days that can be wearisome, but it is also filled with fulfillment and success if led with passion and camaraderie. Having worked with children through college as an early childhood educator and through the child development major at SDSU, I developed a passion for children and working with families. Helping children recover and grow is done effectively by building relationships first and then applying technical skills. I have worked with children ages two to thirteen and therefore have had to adapt to their developmental needs and personal preferences. These experiences have reinforced my desire to continue working with children, and transfer my previous experiences in education, to a hospital setting. Additionally, being fluent in Spanish and English, I am aware of the diversity hospital demands, especially in the hospital setting. Cultural sensitivity is something we lack in several aspects of our society, but when we connect with children and their families on a cultural level, we can immensely enhance, sustain, and restore children’s health. With the increased competitiveness of nursing programs, I feel privileged to start my nursing education with the goal of enhancing children's and family's experiences whenever they have to make a hospital visit.
