FinalistBio
Hi, my name is Ivan, I am a third-generation Hispanic-American. I am deeply devoted to change the structure of the United States; I have seen firsthand the effects of: systemic racism, economic inequality, and the far-reaching effects of class-privilege. My mother had to work long hours at her job just to get for me the things I have today, she struggled so I wouldn't have to. I have only come to realize that the struggle of many BIPOC people is a byproduct of the "War on Drugs", redlining, and ultimately mass incarceration. I want to fight these problems head-on. Not only that, but I aspire to be a Lawyer whose concentration is in Constitutional law and ultimately become a U.S. Senator. When I'm elected I will push agendas that promote the growth of the Middle and lower-classes. To allow every person to be something through universal college, and fix the fatally flawed justice system. Because no person should be held back because of their: Race, Religion, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Socioeconomic Status, or Immigration status. We all should strive to create a fairer and more equitable world.
Also, proud child of a single mom!

I’m from the land of golden sunrises and the cinematic sunsets, of rolling hills and fresh Hatch Chile. From the cold water of the lakes and the hot summer breezes; I’m from a whitewashed labyrinth of homes, not all lined-up how they are in contemporary cities’, yet I’m from the land of the apple trees whose fruit’s speak volumes, yet those very fruits sustained my prior generations, and such my posterity as well. I’m from the casual yelling and loud slurred English to the blasting Spanish and Mexican music. But from the homeland we hold dear, the Land Grant. From the home of the people that invented the number zero, yet paradoxically the ones that struck them down. My legacy is my lineage of immigration.
The legacy I aspire to carry on is one of that is to build a better nation for all. My Great-Grandfather passed last year in, 2020, I promised him one thing, I would go to College then Law School. He had served in WWII; not only that, he resided in New Mexico when it had only been a state for eleven years, he didn’t have any formal education past middle school, and when I was told this, I thought to myself “how and why” I later received the answer; my Great-Grandfather’s father had passed and left his mother, my Great-Great-Grandmother, a widow. He left school and worked in the fields of New Mexico until his teenage years. Thereafter, he had enlisted in the CC Corps, or the Civilian Conservation Corps, a division of the Work Project Association, “WPA”. Subsequently, when WWII broke out he immediately enlisted within the Army.
Moreover, from his lived experiences I’ve taken away one thing, an education is valuable, not all have the privilege of one, and those who do are lucky. In life, some of the best things I’ve experienced had stemmed from my education. If there is anything in this world that I will never take for granted it’s an education; because, for so long my family was deprived of one. My Great-Grandmother on my Mother’s side is an Immigrant from Mexico who only had an elementary school education. After all, from them I’ve learned much--like how living through segregation was, but most importantly, if the door doesn’t open, kick it down; or in other words, if you don’t have a seat at the table make one. Lastly, my activism is in large part derived from what they instilled in me. A fighting spirit.
Additionally, during the current pandemic, I had an idea. Since the State Legislature was going to be all-virtual I thought it’d be a great opportunity to lobby the legislature to pass a bill that requires that one book be taught by and about a Person of Color and their subsequent experiences, and I invited my friend to join me in this endeavor, he did. We’ve made great progress, we’ve met a Legislator and have a meeting scheduled with the Department of Education Secretary. But, this is just the beginning my Deputy Director and I have areas of specialty; mine is Social Justice and his is Climate Change and Science related issues. We’ve written almost ten from-scratch bills, on issues ranging from Climate Change to Social Justice projects geared at fixing the inequities in today's justice system. But in the end, I ultimately hope to go to Law School, hopefully, Harvard, Yale, or Stanford, and be an expert in Constitutional Law, then run for Congress to effect real long-lasting change. And that’s what I want my legacy to be.
