District 27-A2 Lions Diabetes Awareness Scholarship
Ivan smith 10/17/24 Living with diabetes has been one of the most challenging experiences of my life. It has tested my resilience, self-discipline, and emotional strength. At times, it has made me feel like an outcast, isolated from my peers who don’t have to think twice about the food they eat or worry about blood sugar levels. However, over the years, I have learned to reframe my perspective. Rather than viewing diabetes as a burden, I now see it as an aspect of my life that has shaped my character. Diabetes initially made me feel different in ways that were difficult to handle. Growing up, I often felt left out when I couldn’t participate in certain activities or enjoy treats like my friends. Managing blood sugar levels required constant vigilance, from monitoring my diet to administering insulin. This level of responsibility, especially at a young age, made me feel disconnected and frustrated. There were moments when I questioned why I had to deal with this condition while others didn’t. However, as I matured, I began to shift my mindset. Instead of focusing on what diabetes took away, I started to recognize the strengths it helped me develop. Living with diabetes has taught me discipline, as I have to stick to a routine and make mindful choices every day. It has also fostered resilience, as I have had to navigate the emotional and physical challenges of this condition. Most importantly, it has given me a deeper understanding of empathy. I know what it feels like to face challenges that others might not see, and this understanding fuels my desire to support and uplift others. Looking ahead, I don’t believe diabetes will limit me or define my future. While I acknowledge that managing it will always require attention, I have come to terms with the fact that it is simply one part of my life—not the whole picture. I refuse to let it dictate my goals or dreams. Instead, I see it as a reminder of my strength and perseverance. Ultimately, diabetes has shaped me into a more determined and compassionate individual. It has taught me to adapt to challenges and find joy despite difficulties. I believe these lessons will guide me in the future, whether in my personal life or in my career. While living with diabetes is not easy, it has given me tools to face life with courage, and I am confident it will not hold me back from achieving everything I set my mind to.
    Achieve Potential Scholarship
Ivan smith 11/17/24 Receiving this scholarship is important to me because it is essential for my education in college. Alongside the impact that it will have on my college career, it will also support my dream of becoming a psychologist and giving back to my community. This scholarship will provide me with the financial support I need to go to college while majoring in Psychology. The aid that this scholarship will provide will allow me to focus on my studies instead of having to constantly be pressured by financial adversities. To me this scholarship represents more than financial assistance, it represents my hardwork and dedication. Throughout my life I have strived to have the values of consistency, hard work, and serving others in my community. These are instilled in me by my mother, who has taught me the importance of working hard and to chase my goals. By receiving this scholarship, I would honor her teachings and continue to live based on the traits she has taught me. Additionally, this scholarship will partially relieve my family of financial hardship. I am one of three of my mother’s children and growing up I have watched her consistently work hard to provide for me and my siblings. Seeing this from a young age has inspired me to work even harder and achieve my goals so that one day I will be able to take care of her how she has taken care of me. I also aim to give back to the youth in my community. Growing up I have seen the effects of being raised in an underprivileged community on my peers. This has motivated me to make a change. To accomplish this goal, I want to create a safe space in my community where kids come to gain affordable counseling and be relieved from the stress and harsh realities that take place in their lives. I have seen a number of kids I grew up with go down the wrong path because of their environment and it makes me question if they could have refrained from their circumstances if they had a dependable mentor or leader to give them guidance. Ultimately, this scholarship will help build the foundation to achieve my long-term objectives. It will be my first stepping stone in my mission to use my education to better the lives of others. Mental health is an important component of a person's life, but is often overlooked. I want to use my career to express its importance and provide the care my community deserves. This scholarship will allow me to take the necessary steps in order to attend college, give back to the community, and help my mom.
Ryan Yebba Memorial Mental Health Scholarship
Bullying and harassment in K-12 education are critical issues that leave lasting emotional and psychological scars on children. Growing up, I witnessed the severe effects bullying had on my peers, many of whom struggled to find support in a system ill-prepared to address their needs. These experiences motivated me to become an advocate for change in my school and community, and they have shaped my career aspirations in mental health. I am committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and adolescents, particularly those affected by bullying. During high school, I became involved in a peer advocacy group that aimed to prevent bullying through education and fostering empathy. We organized workshops and assemblies to educate our peers on the impacts of bullying, using personal stories to create a more compassionate school environment. By collaborating with school counselors, we provided resources for those struggling with bullying and harassment, ensuring they had access to help. This experience helped me understand the mental health challenges that bullying victims face and fueled my desire to continue advocating for progress. Throughout my advocacy work, I became increasingly aware of the gaps in mental health support for students. Stigma often prevents children from seeking help, and even when they do, the process of accessing mental health services can be complicated and discouraging. These realizations inspired me to pursue a career in mental health, with the goal of creating a system that is more accessible and supportive for young people. Mental health services should be as easily accessible as academic resources in schools. I believe that early intervention and strong mental health support can make a significant difference in children’s lives, especially for those who have experienced bullying. Unfortunately, the current system is often slow and convoluted, with many children facing long wait times and a complex referral process. My goal is to streamline the process of obtaining mental health care for children and adolescents by advocating for the integration of mental health professionals directly into schools. By positioning mental health services within educational settings, students can receive immediate support when dealing with bullying or other mental health challenges. I also plan to promote partnerships between schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations, creating a more efficient referral system so that children can receive timely and appropriate care. In addition to streamlining access to care, I believe that education is key to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. By normalizing conversations about mental health in schools, we can create a culture where children feel comfortable seeking help without fear of judgment. Promoting mental health education and awareness will encourage children to take their mental well-being seriously and reach out for support when needed. In conclusion, my experiences advocating for social change in bullying and mental health have led me to pursue a career in this field. I am dedicated to making mental health services more accessible and to helping create a system where children and adolescents can thrive without the burden of bullying. Through early intervention and increased awareness, I hope to contribute to a future where all young people can receive the care and support they need.
