I’m a 37-year-old single mother pursuing my Registered Nursing (RN) degree at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. My path hasn’t been linear, but it has been intentional. After navigating personal challenges, raising my child, and stepping away from school at different points, I’ve returned with a clear purpose: to build a stable, meaningful career in healthcare and create a better future for my family.
I’m someone who adapts and figures things out. Whether it’s balancing school and parenting, managing limited resources, or taking on hands-on projects at home, I approach challenges with determination and problem-solving. That mindset is what brought me back to nursing. I’m drawn to the field not just for the career stability, but for the opportunity to care for people during some of their most vulnerable moments.
My long-term goal is to become a registered nurse who provides compassionate, patient-centered care, while continuing to grow within the healthcare field. I’m especially interested in supporting individuals and families who need stability, guidance, and advocacy.
Outside of school, most of my time is dedicated to raising my child and creating a supportive, grounded home environment. Being a parent has shaped how I see responsibility, resilience, and purpose—and it’s the reason I’m committed to finishing what I started.
I’m not here by accident. I’m here because I chose to come back, stay consistent, and follow through.

Minority Single Mother Scholarship
My journey as a single mother pursuing higher education has been defined by responsibility, resilience, and a constant effort to build something better for my child. It has not been a straight path. There have been moments where I had to pause, reassess, and rebuild, all while maintaining stability at home. Without the support of a coparent or additional income, every decision I make carries weight—not just for me, but for my child’s well-being and future.
One of the most challenging aspects has been managing the constant overlap between parenting and academic responsibilities. There is no separation between the two. I am responsible for providing emotional support, maintaining our household, and ensuring my child feels secure, while also meeting the demands of a rigorous nursing program. Time is limited, and there are many days where I am balancing coursework, studying, and caregiving without a break. Financial strain adds another layer of pressure, as I work to cover essentials like childcare, transportation, and school-related expenses with limited resources.
Despite these challenges, this journey has also been deeply fulfilling. Being a parent has given my education a stronger sense of purpose. I am no longer working toward a goal that only affects me—I am building a foundation for my family. Every assignment completed, every exam passed, and every step forward represents progress toward stability and opportunity. My child is a constant source of motivation. Knowing that I am modeling perseverance, responsibility, and commitment gives meaning to the sacrifices required along the way.
My background as a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) has also shaped my perspective and strengthened my direction. It has allowed me to understand the broader impact of health, access, and education within communities. Pursuing nursing is a continuation of that work, giving me the ability to not only educate, but also provide direct care and advocacy. It aligns with my long-term goal of creating both personal stability and meaningful impact within the community.
Through my education, I hope to uplift my family by creating financial security, consistency, and a future with more opportunities. Nursing will allow me to build a stable career while also showing my child what it looks like to pursue a goal with determination, even when circumstances are not ideal. I want my child to grow up understanding that challenges do not define limits, and that it is possible to move forward through persistence and effort.
This journey has required sacrifice, but it has also built strength. I am not just working toward a degree—I am creating a different path for my family, one that is rooted in stability, growth, and the ability to give back.
Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
My decision to pursue a degree in nursing is not a sudden change in direction—it is a deliberate next step in the work I have already committed myself to. As a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), I have spent time studying and understanding how health is shaped not just by clinical care, but by access, education, environment, and trust. I have learned how to communicate health information and empower individuals to make informed decisions. But I have also seen the limitations of education alone. There are moments when knowledge is not enough—when someone needs direct care, guidance, and advocacy in real time. Nursing allows me to step into that role and expand my impact in a way that is both immediate and meaningful.
One experience that stayed with me involved helping someone understand basic health information they genuinely wanted to follow. They were motivated, but overwhelmed—unsure where to begin and hesitant to trust the system. It was clear that the barrier wasn’t willingness, but a lack of support and connection. That moment shifted how I viewed my role in healthcare. It reinforced that being present, building trust, and meeting people where they are can be just as important as the information itself. Nursing allows me to bring both education and care together, so I can support individuals not only in understanding their health, but in navigating it.
As a single mother, my path has required persistence, discipline, and a strong sense of responsibility. I am balancing rigorous academic demands with raising my child and maintaining stability in our daily lives. There are no shortcuts in this process—only consistent effort and the ability to keep moving forward, even when it is difficult. That experience has strengthened my ability to stay focused under pressure, manage competing responsibilities, and remain committed to long-term goals. These are the same qualities that will carry me through nursing school and into my career.
My goal as a nurse is to serve as a bridge between healthcare systems and the communities they are meant to support. With my background in health education, I understand how gaps in health literacy, access, and trust can affect outcomes. As a nurse, I want to contribute by making care more approachable and understandable, especially for underserved populations. I aim to create an environment where patients feel informed, respected, and supported—not rushed or overlooked. Whether it is reinforcing preventive care, clarifying treatment plans, or simply taking the time to listen, I want my presence to improve both patient experience and health outcomes.
In the long term, I plan to continue integrating community health with clinical practice, expanding my role through outreach, education, and advocacy. I want to be a nurse who not only treats illness, but actively contributes to prevention and long-term wellness within the community.
This scholarship would directly support my ability to continue this path. It would reduce financial strain, allowing me to focus more fully on my education and clinical training while maintaining stability for my child. More importantly, it would be an investment in someone who is already committed to making an impact and is actively working toward expanding that impact through nursing.
Nursing is more than a career choice for me—it is a commitment to growth, service, and responsibility. I am not only working toward becoming a nurse, but toward becoming someone who can make healthcare feel more accessible, more human, and more effective for the communities I serve.
Organic Formula Shop Single Parent Scholarship
The most challenging part of being both a student and a single parent is that there is no true separation between responsibilities. There is no “pause” button for parenting when school becomes overwhelming, and no option to fully step away from school when my child needs me. Both roles demand my full attention, and often at the same time. It requires constant mental shifting—going from focusing on coursework and clinical skills to being emotionally present, supportive, and dependable for my child. There are days when the weight of both responsibilities feels heavy, not because I am incapable, but because both roles matter deeply to me, and I want to show up fully for each.
Time is one of the biggest challenges. Every hour has to be accounted for and used intentionally. Study time often happens late at night after my child is asleep, or in small windows throughout the day. Rest is limited, and there is little room for error when it comes to deadlines, attendance, or responsibilities at home. At the same time, I carry the responsibility of maintaining stability for my child—emotionally, physically, and financially. As a single parent with no additional income, there is an ongoing awareness that everything depends on my ability to keep moving forward without falling behind.
Despite these challenges, being both a student and a parent has strengthened me in ways I don’t think I would have experienced otherwise. It has taught me discipline, patience, and the ability to prioritize what truly matters. It has also deepened my sense of purpose. I am not pursuing my education solely for personal achievement—I am doing it to create a better, more secure future for my child. That perspective changes everything. It keeps me grounded, focused, and motivated, even during the most difficult moments.
This scholarship would play a critical role in helping me continue this path. Financial strain is one of the biggest barriers I face, and it directly impacts my ability to focus on school. Nursing programs come with significant expenses beyond tuition, including textbooks, uniforms, clinical supplies, exam fees, transportation, and childcare. Without financial support, these costs create constant stress and uncertainty. This scholarship would help reduce that burden, allowing me to be more present and engaged in both my education and my role as a parent.
More than just financial relief, this scholarship represents stability. It would allow me to create a more consistent routine for my child and myself, without the constant pressure of figuring out how to cover essential expenses. That stability translates into better academic performance, stronger focus, and the ability to fully commit to the demands of nursing school. It would also give me the space to approach my education with confidence rather than anxiety.
For my child, this scholarship represents something even bigger. It represents security, opportunity, and a different kind of future. It means having a parent who is not only present, but also building something lasting. Children are always watching, even when we don’t realize it. By continuing my education despite challenges, I am showing my child what persistence, responsibility, and determination look like in real life. I want my child to grow up understanding that circumstances do not define limits, and that it is possible to rebuild, adapt, and move forward.
Looking ahead, my goal is to become a registered nurse and build a career that provides both stability and purpose. I want to work in an environment where I can make a meaningful impact on others while continuing to grow professionally. Nursing offers the opportunity to care for people during vulnerable moments, and I take that responsibility seriously. It aligns with the values I carry as both a parent and an individual—compassion, reliability, and service.
This scholarship would help bridge the gap between where I am now and where I am working to be. It is not just an investment in my education, but in the foundation of my family’s future. It would allow me to continue forward with fewer barriers, more stability, and a stronger ability to succeed. In doing so, it would help me build a life where my child and I are not just getting by, but truly moving forward.
