Malgorzata’s challenges resonate with me because I see my own journey reflected in hers (in the fight to be seen, the perseverance through fear, and the courage to keep going when circumstances seem impossible). Since my freshman year of college, I have been canvassing which is going door to door, visiting gas stations, and speaking with businesses in communities across different states leaving books on a donation basis to raise funds for my tuition. It is not an easy task. Many of the neighborhoods I entered were unwelcoming, sometimes openly racist, and often skeptical of a young student asking for help. I have had to give 1000% more than my peers just to be recognized for my work and my dedication. Beyond the challenges of work, I have had to navigate the distance from my family. My mother lives in the Dominican Republic, and during my three years of college, I have only been able to visit her once because of financial constraints. There were moments when I felt completely alone, there was no one to guide me, no one to celebrate the small victories with me, but through it all, I have been able to stand strong thanks to God. My faith has carried me through days when exhaustion, fear, or discouragement threatened to take over. I have learned to rely on my own strength while trusting that I am not truly alone in this journey. Canvassing has tested more than my determination; it has tested my courage. Each “no,” each skeptical glance, and each uncomfortable interaction was a challenge I had to face head-on. Asking strangers to donate for my education required me to step out of my comfort zone daily, and it was scary at times. But with every small success, I felt God’s guidance and strength reminding me that I could endure and grow from these experiences. I have learned that resilience is built not in comfort, but in stepping into the hard moments and continuing anyway. Through these experiences, I have learned that achievement is not measured solely by recognition from others, but by the persistence, courage, and faith that allow us to keep moving forward despite the odds. Malgorzata’s story reminds me that even in the face of systemic and personal challenges, determination can create change, not only in our own lives, but in the lives of those we touch along the way. I see myself in her struggles, and I see the possibility for impact, growth, and leadership that comes from overcoming obstacles. Every door I knock on, every book I leave for donation, every challenge I face reminds me that my journey is defined by resilience, faith, and the refusal to be limited by circumstances. This is the story of my life: relying on God, working tirelessly, and daring to dream of a future I am proud of. -Ismeily Cruz Vásquez

Finding My Voice in Digital Marketing I’m an undergraduate business management student with a strong interest in marketing, especially digital marketing. I didn’t always know that this was what I wanted to focus on, but that changed during one of my marketing classes. We were assigned to create a marketing plan, and I gave it everything I had. After presenting it, my professor told me it was the best one in the class. That moment stuck with me. It made me feel seen, and for the first time, I seriously started thinking about marketing as something I could really be good at. Since then, I’ve developed a genuine love for marketing in all its forms. I’ve been learning more on my own, diving into articles, watching videos, and paying attention to how brands use social media. Being active on social media myself, I started noticing the strategy behind things I used to scroll past without thinking. I began asking questions like, “Why did they post this?” or “What message are they really trying to send?” The more I learn, the more I realize how powerful digital marketing can be when it’s done with purpose. My goal is to become a digital marketing professional who helps businesses grow in a way that feels authentic and creative. I especially want to work with small businesses, student-led startups, and organizations that are just getting off the ground. So many great ideas never take off because people don’t know how to promote themselves or connect with the right audience. I want to help them change that. I want to be the person who helps them believe they can actually reach their goals. Along the way, I’m also trying to improve my skills with computers and technology. I’ve been learning about tools like Canva, Google Ads, and basic analytics. I want to keep building on that by taking extra courses and eventually working on real campaigns. I’m not just focused on the creative side. I want to understand how to back up good ideas with results and data. Being a student isn’t always easy, especially financially. I’ve had to be resourceful and find creative ways to keep learning and growing, even when I don’t have access to all the tools or opportunities I wish I had. This scholarship would help me continue learning and move forward with confidence. It would mean a lot to have support from people who believe in students like me. I never had the chance to meet Brandon Repola, but reading about him was truly inspiring. He believed in chasing dreams and using your talents to change the world. That’s the kind of mindset I try to live by. I want to use digital marketing not just to sell, but to tell stories, share ideas, and help others grow. That’s how I plan to make an impact, one step at a time. -Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

Turning Green into Gold As a business management major with a strong interest in both finance and marketing, I’ve come to realize that the future of business depends on our ability to protect the environment. In the next five years, I plan to use what I’ve learned to create real, lasting change in both my local community and on a global scale. My focus will be on helping businesses become more sustainable while showing people that going green isn’t just a trend, it’s a smart and responsible way to grow. From the financial side, I want to help small businesses and entrepreneurs invest in sustainable practices. Many of them want to make eco-friendly changes, but they don’t know where to start or worry about the costs. I want to provide them with strategies that make these changes affordable and beneficial in the long term. Whether it’s helping them apply for green business grants, cut unnecessary energy expenses, or invest in low-waste inventory systems, my goal is to make sustainability part of everyday business planning. At the same time, I understand that financial solutions alone won’t reach everyone. People need to be informed and inspired, which is where marketing comes in. I plan to use digital storytelling, social media campaigns, and community events to promote eco-conscious choices and support local green businesses. By highlighting businesses that are making a difference, I hope to influence more people to shop local, reduce waste, and support companies that care about the environment. Locally, I’d like to organize workshops or pop-up events in my community that combine financial education with sustainable living tips. These would be geared toward students, small business owners, and underserved families. The goal would be to make sustainability feel realistic and doable for everyone, not just something for the wealthy or privileged. On a global level, I want to work with mission-driven companies and nonprofits that focus on environmental justice. These organizations often need help with both funding and outreach. I’d love to be part of teams that help them secure financing while also crafting powerful marketing campaigns that bring their stories to the world. There are so many communities around the world working hard to protect natural resources, but their efforts often go unseen. I want to help change that. Ultimately, I believe that the business world has a huge role to play in the fight against climate change. With the right strategies and tools, we can grow businesses and protect the planet at the same time. This scholarship would help me continue my education and give me the chance to bring these goals to life. I’m committed to becoming the kind of leader who helps others succeed while making sure we all have a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future. -Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

Both a window and a wall. This is what social media can be. A window, when it connects us to ideas, people, and opportunities, and a wall when it traps us behind comparisons, unrealistic expectations, and pressure to perform for validation. I've seen how social media can shape someone's entire view of themselves, especially when they're already vulnerable. As someone who has grown up watching my mother struggle with untreated mental health issues, I became very sensitive to emotional changes, not just in others but in myself. There were times when social media made me feel more alone to the point where making online "friends" was what it was making me feel heard or seen, but in reality, that was damaging my innocence more and more every day. I've scrolled through smiling photos and seemingly perfect lives, wondering if I was falling behind (mentally, emotionally, and personally). It's easy to forget that most people don't share their struggles online, only their highlights. Social media can severely impact self-esteem, especially in young people. It fosters constant comparison, encourages curated perfection, and exposes users to cyberbullying or harmful content (which was my case since an early age). It's not just about feeling sad temporarily; it can lead to anxiety, depression, isolation, and even self-harm. However, social media isn't inherently bad. It becomes harmful when we're not taught how to use it in healthy ways or when the platforms themselves are designed to keep us hooked without considering our emotional well-being. To address this impact, I believe we need a combination of education, accountability, and support. Digital mental health education should be integrated into schools. We should learn how to manage our digital presence, set boundaries online, recognize toxic content, and prioritize real-life well-being over online validation. Social media companies must take responsibility. Algorithms should prioritize healthy content, reduce exposure to harmful trends, and allow users to take "mental health breaks" without punishment (like losing reach or visibility). Mental health support must be made more visible on these platforms. Crisis hotlines, positive messaging, and access to resources should be easily accessible. When someone is struggling, help should never be more than one click away. We need to promote realness over perfection. Influencers, schools, and even peers should normalize showing not just success, but growth, struggle, and healing. The more we talk openly about our mental health, the more we create a safer digital space for others. Social media is a powerful tool, but like any tool, it depends on how we use it. We need to shift the culture from comparison to compassion, from likes to love, and from pressure to presence. That's how we protect not only our mental health but also our sense of self-worth. -Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

I was born into limitation, but I was raised to break barriers. From a young age, I learned to turn obstacles into motivation, and each challenge became fuel for a vision bigger than my reality. Hi, my name is Ismeily [is-may-lee] and I'm an international student originally from the Dominican Republic pursuing a degree in Business Management with a dream much bigger than my circumstances. Raised by a single mother who worked tirelessly to provide for us despite anything, I learned early on the value of resilience, hard work, and ambition. My passion for business stems not only from a desire to succeed but also from a deep commitment to transforming my family's financial legacy and empowering others in similar situations. This scholarship is more than financial help; it's a lifeline. As an international student, I face unique challenges: limited access to government aid, restricted work opportunities, and ongoing financial pressure. Every contribution I receive helps lift not only my burden, but also my mother's, who has sacrificed so much to help me reach this point. Without this support, my ability to remain focused and continue my education is at risk. My long-term vision is to become a business owner who creates opportunities for others, especially those from underserved communities. I want to build a socially responsible company that provides mentorship and employment to women like my mother, strong, capable, and full of potential, but lacking support. My ultimate goal is to break the cycle of poverty and shift it into a cycle of empowerment. Service is a foundation in my life. I've served as president of my university's Management Club, where I organized professional development events and helped students find guidance. As a Resident Assistant, I've supported students' emotional, academic, and social needs. Off-campus, I've volunteered at food drives and community clean-up events with my church-always finding ways to give back with the little I have. This scholarship would not only relieve financial strain but empower a young woman determined to change her life and help others to do the same. Your investment would allow me to continue my education, grow as a leader, and one day return the favor to others in need. I am deeply grateful for your time, consideration, and the opportunity to share my story. With your support, I will not only reach my goals, but I will build a platform to help others reach theirs too! Sincerely, Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

I was ten years old when I watched my mom turn a small box of plantains into dinner for three families. That moment sparked something in me, a realization that resourcefulness, generosity, and grit could uplift entire communities. Today, as a business administration student at Oakwood University, I carry that lesson with me: real change starts with what we build, share, and lead. Economic empowerment is the foundation of social justice. Underrepresented communities, especially Black and immigrant populations, have long been denied access to wealth-building tools. Business innovation (when used intentionally) can break those barriers. I believe entrepreneurship should not only generate profit but also close opportunity gaps, provide employment, and build generational wealth. My vision is to launch a nonprofit that equips low-income families in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic with scholarships, housing assistance, and micro-grants to launch businesses. I want to create mentorship pipelines connecting HBCU students to career opportunities and financial literacy training. These tools can shift lives permanently. At Oakwood, I've put my vision into action. I founded a management club to mentor peers in leadership and career development. As a Resident Assistant, I help students navigate academic, financial, and personal struggles. I also started a small food business on campus, reinvesting the profits to support student events and help students afford meals when they're in a tough spot. These experiences have helped me understand the power of social entrepreneurship and how business decisions can directly impact people's lives. I am also involved in planning cultural and spiritual events that create a safe space for young people to grow emotionally and spiritually. I believe leadership starts with community. Whether it's offering encouragement during finals week or helping a freshman build a resume, I've found joy in giving back. This mindset will continue to guide my career and the organizations I build. My ultimate goal is to become a socially responsible business leader who uses influence to advocate for economic equity. I want to reinvest my success into the communities that raised me, ensuring others have the support I once needed. When people have stable housing, education, and job opportunities, entire generations can begin to heal, thrive, and lead. This scholarship will fuel my mission to drive bold, lasting change. With your support, I'm not just earning a degree, but I'm building a future where every voice, every idea, and every dream has a fair chance. I'm not waiting for change to happen. I'm preparing to lead it. -Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

Charity is important to me because it represents love in action, an expression of empathy, responsibility, and community. Growing up, I saw my mother consistently help others despite our limited resources. That example taught me that giving is not about how much you have but about how much you care. As a student at an HBCU, I have experienced firsthand challenges that come with limited financial and institutional resources. Yet I've also witnessed the power of collective support and how it can transform lives. In the future, I plan to give back by investing in underserved communities, particularly those in the Dominican Republic and among minority groups in the U.S. My long-term goal is to establish a nonprofit that offers scholarships, housing, and mentorship to low-income families. I also want to continue mentoring younger students on campus and beyond, reminding them that their dreams are valid and achievable. Charity is not just a moment, but it's a mission, and I'm committed to making it part of my life's purpose.

Growing up, I watched my mom fight every day to give me a better life. As a single mother, she did everything she could to provide, she even managed to build her own house, though it meant drowning in debt, she's still paying off today. Unlike many parents who can support their kids financially even from afar, my mom simply couldn't. But she gave me something more valuable: her example of perseverance and sacrifice. Her dream was always to own a business. She talked about it often, eyes full of hope and what-ifs. But life didn't give her the chance. Even now, she still expresses regret about not having the resources to chase her dreams. Watching that regret grow in someone I love deeply left a lasting impact on me. I knew early on that I wanted to understand how finances work so that others like my mom wouldn't have to give up their dreams just because they didn't have the tools or knowledge to move forward. That's what led me to pursue a degree in Business Administration at Oakwood University. And that's what's now pushing me to continue my education and earn a master's degree in finance and economics. I want to become a financial consultant who helps people reach financial freedom, not just in theory but in ways that align with their real lives and goals. For me, finance isn't just about numbers. It's about giving people a fair shot. It's about creating opportunities where they didn't exist before. It's about making sure that someone like my mom wouldn't have to give up on a dream just because she couldn't afford to make it real. Charles E. Nettles's legacy as an educator inspires me. He used education to shape minds and change lives, which is something I hope to do through the path I've chosen. His belief in preparing today for a better tomorrow echoes in everything I'm working toward. This scholarship would mean more than financial relief; it would represent a step forward in a journey rooted in purpose. I'm not just continuing my education for myself, but for people like my mom, who had the vision but not the means. With a master's degree in finance and economics, I'll be better equipped to serve, guide, and uplift others through financial education and strategic consulting. I believe that everyone deserves the chance to build the life they envision, and I want to be part of making that possible. - Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

My name is Ismeily Abigail Cruz Vasquez, and I’m incredibly grateful for the journey that has brought me here. My faith, my family, and the people around me have shaped me into who I am today. My mother has worked tirelessly to give me the opportunity to pursue my education, and her sacrifices inspire me every day to give back in any way I can. At Oakwood University, I’ve had the chance to grow, learn, and serve my community. I lead the Management Club and help run the E-sports & Entrepreneurship Club, but more importantly, I get to support and uplift my peers. As a Resident Assistant, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about titles—it’s about being there for people, listening, and creating a welcoming space where everyone feels valued. I’m passionate about helping underserved communities, both in the Dominican Republic and here in the U.S. I’ve seen how limited access to education and financial resources can hold people back, and I want to be part of the solution. My dream is to provide scholarships, financial literacy programs, and housing assistance to those who need them. I believe that when people are given the right tools, they can create a better future for themselves and their families. My faith is the foundation of everything I do. As a Seventh-day Adventist, I believe in leading with kindness, humility, and love. Whether it’s supporting a struggling student, lending a hand to someone in need, or advocating for more resources in my community, I try to reflect Christ’s love in my everyday actions. I don’t see success as personal achievements—I see it in the lives I can help change for the better. Working at a Seventh-Day Adventist summer camp also taught me a lot about patience, understanding, and problem-solving. I dealt with everything from customer service to conflict resolution, and those experiences have shaped how I approach challenges. I know that whatever I do in the future, I want to be in a position where I can serve others and make a real impact. Receiving this scholarship would be an incredible blessing. It would take some financial pressure off my shoulders and allow me to focus more on my education and my mission to help others. More than that, it would remind me that people believe in my vision, and that means everything to me. I don’t know exactly where my journey will take me, but I do know that I want to leave a positive mark on the world. My story isn’t just about me—it’s about the people I can help along the way. With faith, determination, and the right support, I know I can make a difference. - Ismeily Abigail Cruz Vasquez

Though my course of study has nothing to do with specifying any prominent interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, I will now confess its paramount relevance, particularly concerning business and leadership. The prospect that this generation carries such kind of thinking is that business will never be sidelined like any other enterprise. For users like myself, all we think that having some background in STEM would just be beneficial and nice to have is not correct it is a necessity. I particularly have an interest in closing the communication between the people and the systems to make sure that technology is not only used to improve efficiency but also serves as an empowerment. This vision resonates deeply with my aspirations to approach my work as a leader, who is utilizing global technology and creativity to achieve sustainable growth and transformation. I feel that I am best suited to the convergence of Business and IT, whether through the automation of business processes using AI tools or deciphering customer requirements using data analysis. I intend to set precedents in managing people from divergent profiles and support the cause of diversity by ensuring that even laymen find STEM progression exciting and user-friendly. This is the scholarship that I will be using to pursue leadership skills and STEM at the same time by developing means of addressing the problems and not the people affected. Driven by the resolve to fight off all setbacks, I vow that every challenge I have experienced will count in bearing the fruits of change and constructing a society where technology-cum-leadership serves individuals for the betterment of civilization. - Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

During high school, I was uncertain about my future after graduation. For three months, I was lost, especially since my mother could not afford a good education due to our low income in the Dominican Republic. One day at work, she asked her boss about scholarship opportunities, given that I graduated with the highest GPA in my class. Her boss, a former Chair of the Law School at a local university, asked if she thought I was good enough to study abroad. My mother expressed her concerns about finances, but he encouraged her to consider it. He then suggested we meet with representatives from an Adventist university in Alabama that evening. That meeting changed everything. I applied, got accepted, and completed the paperwork, ultimately arriving at a place that has provided me with education and personal growth since I was 18. Initially, I felt out of place, but over time, I formed meaningful friendships that I believe will last a lifetime. I realize I didn’t choose my HBCU; it chose me. Only God knew how much I needed to be away from home to grow in every aspect and draw closer to Him. I’ve cherished every moment of my HBCU experience, including the challenges of overwhelm and financial hardship. My favorite memory is participating in social activities, especially the AYM (Adventist Youth Ministries) services every Friday night. Since leaving home, I’ve never felt God's presence more profoundly. Despite struggles, God has always been there, never letting me fall.

The general idea of the American dream has always been a big deal, promising that anyone, no matter where they come from, can achieve success and prosperity through hard work. As a low-income F-1 visa student in the United States, trying to get through college while my parents are back home, my version of the American dream is a bit different. To me, it's about doing well in school, gaining financial stability, and bridging the gap between my culture and the new experiences here. For me, education is the heart of the American dream. Studying in the U.S. means access to amazing resources and a chance to learn from different perspectives. Despite not having much money, doing well in school is super important. The challenge of a tough academic environment pushes me to do better and be more adaptable. On-campus part-time jobs and canvassing (colporteur), are lifelines that help me get through but still are not enough. Doing well in my studies isn't just a win for me; it's proof that my family's sacrifices are worth it. Financial stability is a huge part of my American dream. Coming from a low-income background, the cost of studying abroad can feel overwhelming. Balancing tuition and living expenses requires careful planning and a lot of persistence. With limited work options for F-1 visa students, things get tricky. Every dollar earned, whether from campus jobs, internships, or scholarships like this, is a step towards achieving my dreams. Living in the U.S. as an international student is a chance to dive into cultural exchange, helping build understanding between my home country and the U.S. This part of the American dream is about more than personal success; it's about being part of a bigger story of global connection. By sharing my culture and embracing the diversity here, I help bridge cultural gaps. This exchange makes me more empathetic and informed, ready to contribute positively to both my home and the community here. My American dream is also deeply connected to my family's hopes and sacrifices. My mom's support, even from afar, drives me to succeed. She has invested not just money, but also their hopes in my education, believing it will lead to a a better future for us. This dream is something we share, where my achievements reflect their dreams and efforts. The desire to make her proud and eventually provide her security and happiness keeps me going. Getting this scholarship would take a huge load off my shoulders, letting me focus more on my studies and personal growth. It would mean less worrying about money and more time for academics. Plus, it would help me keep contributing to my college community's cultural diversity and energy. This scholarship is a crucial step forward to achieving my American dream and making a meaningful impact on my home and host communities. -Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

My name is Ismeily, and I am a 19-year-old student originally from the Dominican Republic. Growing up in a medium-low-class environment, my mom filled me with values of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of education. These values have driven me to excel academically and pursue opportunities for personal and professional growth. Since moving to the United States, I have embraced the challenges of adapting to a new educational system. I am currently a college sophomore at Oakwood University, an HBCU school in Huntsville, Alabama, where I am majoring in Business Administration Management. Throughout my academic journey, I have maintained a 3.8 GPA, participated in many campus activities, and volunteered at my school serving food to the homeless, and helping clean orphan centers, demonstrating my commitment to both my studies and the community. As a non-US citizen, I have faced unique challenges, such as mastering a new language and navigating cultural differences. Despite these obstacles, I have excelled academically and become an active member of my school and community. For instance, I received the award for being enrolled in the Dean’s list, demonstrating my high academic achievements since my first year of college, and I have taken on leadership roles in clubs and student movement activities. This following semester, I will be leading the Management Club from my department which will challenge me to come up with ideas, plans, and strategies to get the club to be recognized all over the school. One of the most significant challenges has been financing my education. Without access to the same financial aid opportunities as US citizens, I have worked on-campus part-time jobs, I am currently a colporteur, this is a door-to-door salesperson who travels spreading the Word of God by selling Christian books, and sought out scholarships to support my academic pursuits. This experience has taught me resilience and the importance of perseverance. Receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial burden of my education. It would allow me to focus more on my studies and participate in academic enrichment opportunities, such as internships and research projects, that are essential for my career development. Specifically, the funding would cover my tuition and the cost of essential supplies, ensuring that I can continue to excel in my coursework. With my degree, my ultimate goal is to become the youngest Hispanic CEO in the United States, where I can encourage the next generations to follow their dreams and at the same time give away scholarships like this for them to achieve their goals. My experiences as a non-US citizen have given me a unique perspective and a strong desire to contribute to my community. I am committed to using my education to address ongoing issues or challenges in the world and to inspire others who face similar situations. In conclusion, this scholarship will not only support my immediate educational needs but also empower me to achieve my long-term goals and make a meaningful impact in my field and community. Developing my skills hasn't been more than learning from every single one of my failures. From those failures, I knew that accomplishing anything that I wanted to achieve in life wasn't going to be an easy task. In life, we often find ourselves weaving threads of service, leadership, and personal growth. My journey embodies this specific pattern, where experiences such as community service, working as a Residence Assistant (RA) and receptionist has contributed to the development of my skills and ignited my passion for helping others to be their best selves. As a kid, I wanted to be many things, lawyer, teacher, and doctor... but, as I grew up I knew that no matter what I dedicated my life to I wanted to help people either to help them grow or to make them feel good about themselves.I could do that through volunteering at the activities done at school like Agape Day where I served at local shelters, organizing food drives, and participating in environmental cleanup efforts. I cultivated empathy, the cornerstone of my commitment to serving others. As an RA and receptionist, I embraced the opportunity to foster a supportive and inclusive community within the residence hall. Through building meaningful relationships with residents, organizing engaging activities, and providing guidance during challenging times. For me, these positions gave me a great opportunity to build a difference. As an international student, I understand that it can be hard sometimes to adapt to a new environment where your parents are not around to guide you so, I saw myself in the need to create a home away from home for every single one of my residents, and I served as a source of encouragement in moments of doubt. There, I recognized the power of empathy and genuine care in uplifting others. In my journey, I have always been driven by a desire to keep growing and learning more about myself. It has been important for me to actively seek feedback to improve, attend workshops, and take advantage of opportunities to develop personally and professionally. This mindset of always trying to improve gives me the energy to follow my passion. Each experience I've had has been like a building block, pushing me forward on a path where I can help others, lead with empathy, and discover more about myself as I go along. In conclusion, as an international student pursuing a business degree, there are many things I want to accomplish to make my mission a reality. But it is a matter of time, dedication, effort, and money to see my goals reflected in the future. My journey has been more than impulse to keep doing what I am doing that is committing myself to make a positive impact in the lives of others and creating a more compassionate and inclusive world for all. - Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

THE STRUGGLE IS REAL! Imagine coming from a low-income household in the Dominican Republic, where literally every saving was spent on an uncertain journey, that was me. In July 2022, I graduated from high school, and that is when I started this journey to be an international student. I thought it was the best way of reaching the "American Dream", because I would end up with an American degree and have more opportunities in the corporate world... fallacies! Since my first semester in January 2023, I saw myself in a real struggle where raising funds for school took my blood, sweat, and tears. I had to perform several activities such as working on campus, canvassing, and offering tutoring accounting classes. No one said it was going to be easy! Now, I have applied to over 96 internships, written over 15 scholarship essays, and been rejected from all of them. At first, I thought there was something wrong with my resume, or I was getting no scholarships because I was getting some help from AI (language barrier struggle) but I found out that most of the internships I applied to were not taking international students. I do not know if recruiters think that we need visa sponsorship when we don't but I did not "qualify" for none of them. The famous statement that many companies use is "We appreciate your interest in joining this program! At this time, we have decided to pursue other candidates for this position." really makes me sad. I am not sure about this, but I just feel they say it because they rather accept an US citizen than a Hispanic with English as a second language who left home, came to the US to start from 0, and spent every penny to have a better future. I might be wrong, but that's how I feel. If I get the opportunity to win a scholarship to help my mom who's back home sending me the money that is supposed to do groceries for me to pay for school, I would be very happy to "quitarle un peso de encima". And despite the challenges I have gone through, I keep my faith up and am committed to changing things. I am eager to advocate for equity and equality in all aspects of society. Brian Lara inspires me to give the best of me, not only for my benefit but for the whole community that I represent that is waiting for someone like me to make a change in the world. I recognize the importance of empowering underrepresented communities and providing them with the tools needed to succeed. I am dedicated to breaking down any barriers and creating opportunities for individuals like me. -Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

For someone who has experienced mental health issues, not myself but my mom, which affected me indirectly. Because at my early age I had to look for options to help my mom without her getting mad at me but until today, it's been impossible to make her seek for help or follow a treatment. So, I know how difficult could become a situation like that not only because is hard itself but because there's no resources to treat it. And I'm so glad that I am applying for this scholarship because this list of caucuses can help me a lot to get some help for my mom and make her see live from a different perspective and not like living is a "hell". I would say that improving prevention and early intervention should be the first caucus on the list. By focusing on strategies that stop mental health problems from developing or worsening, we can potentially save many lives from long-term negative consequences and reduce the overall burden on the mental health system. The second caucus on the list should be increasing access to evidence-based mental health treatment and common-sense solutions. This way, we can ensure that people have access to effective treatments and be aware of how different their lives can turn once they complete treatments successfully. The third caucus that should be enhancing the nation's crisis response services. Again, providing immediate support and intervention can save many lives during mental health emergencies. Many people don't know who to rely on when they are having a mental health emergency. So, it is crucial to improve the capacity, coordination, and accessibility of crisis response services to ensure timely and appropriate care for individuals suffering mental health issues. Lastly, expanding the country's mental health professional workforce is in this place because it is based on the understanding that without adequate prevention efforts, access to treatment, and crisis response services, simply increasing the workforce may not address the larger systemic challenges. However, it should be acknowledged that a well-trained and sufficient mental health workforce is vital to support the delivery of quality mental health services. In conclusion, it is essential to recognize that different perspectives and experiences may lead yo different prioritization orders. Some might argue that expanding the mental health professional workforce should be higher on the list, recognizing the need for more providers to meet the growing demand for mental health services. Others might argue for placing crisis response services higher due to the immediate and lifr-saving nature of THEIR interventions. Ultimately, the prioritization order should be determined through robust discussions and considering various stakeholders' opinions.

Be The Change Volunteering has granted me the unique opportunity to interact with people from various walks of life, each grappling with distinct challenges. By immersing myself in their realities, I have developed a profound sense of empathy and compassion. These interactions have highlighted the shared humanity we all possess, regardless of our differences. One key aspect of community service is its emphasis on collective action. I have come to realize that to create significant and lasting change, it is essential to collaborate with others who share similar goals. Volunteering has taught me the importance of teamwork, effective communication, and compromise in achieving common objectives. These lessons have proven invaluable, not just in community service but also in various aspects of life and future endeavors. During my community service at Eva B. Dykes Library, I met such a nice person that helped me understand the importance of leaving a legacy in the world we live in. She was the one that gave me the opportunity to do this amazing service. I’m not sure if this service benefitted the others that had helped in this project before but, I’m sure that this service definitely helped me. Something that I could notice in the place of service was the interest that everybody put in what they were doing, letting me understand the great importance that the project has over Oakwood University. Volunteering has been a humbling experience. It has taught me to appreciate the blessings in my life while acknowledging the challenges faced by others. This sense of humility has also reinforced my belief in the interconnectedness of humanity, inspiring me to contribute my skills and time to create a positive impact. As my involvement in community service deepened, so did my sense of responsibility towards society. Volunteering has revealed the potential we each possess to drive change and improve the lives of others. This realization has led me to recognize that, as members of a global community, we have a collective duty to address pressing social issues. My experiences have ignited a fire within me to be an active agent of change, rather than a passive observer. The purpose of the service was to collect all the books written by Eva B. Dykes or the books that were related to her, in order to have her entire collection and that it can be presented to some individuals who are coming from Harvard University, so they can learn about the contributions of Eva B. Dykes over the young people of her times and how those contributions have left a legacy in the history of Oakwood University. Even though it was only a two-hour service, I found out that I greatly admire all the people who have contributed to Black History and teaching young people about the Lord. For me, knowing our history and learning about our Savior are two fundamental pillars for the good development of the human being. I know that the people who contributed to this service felt as fulfilled as I did, knowing that I am helping to keep the legacy of such an amazing person. My personal philosophy of service is personal growth in intellect, a better perspective on society, and an approach to it. Additionally, my experiences have sparked a keen interest in international development and humanitarian aid. I aspire to work with organizations that promote sustainable development. By combining my passion for helping others with my desire for global impact, I aim to contribute to a more just and equitable world. My journey through volunteering and participating in community service has been transformative, shaping my perspective on humanity in profound ways. These experiences have taught me the importance of empathy, collaboration, gratitude, and responsibility. They have influenced my ambitions, leading me to pursue a career in social work and international development. As I move forward, I am committed to using my skills and dedication to make a positive difference in the lives of others and contribute to building a more compassionate and equitable society. Volunteering has not only given me a purpose but has also revealed the potential we all hold to be forces of positive change in the world. As I step into this new chapter of my life, I carry with me the invaluable lessons learned from my service experience. I am confident that the empathy, understanding, and determination I have gained will not only guide me in my career but also shape me into a more compassionate and socially conscious individual. I look forward to contributing my efforts to the betterment of society and being part of a collective force that strives to build a more just and compassionate world for all. - Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

Embracing the Journey: Challenges and Triumphs as a Non-U.S. Citizen in Education As a non-U.S. citizen pursuing education in the United States, my journey has been marked by both unique challenges and rewarding triumphs. Navigating a foreign education system, cultural differences, and legal complexities has required resilience and adaptability. In this essay, I will explore the challenges I faced, the strategies I employed to overcome them, and the driving force behind my career aspirations and pursuit of post-secondary education in the U.S. One of the initial hurdles I encountered was the language barrier. English being my second language, I faced difficulty in comprehending lectures, expressing ideas, and communicating effectively with peers. Adapting to a new cultural environment, with different customs, social norms, and educational practices, presented its own set of challenges. I often felt like an outsider trying to assimilate into a diverse student community. As a non-U.S. citizen, I had to navigate complex visa processes and adhere to stringent legal requirements to ensure my education and stay in the U.S. were compliant with immigration laws. Pursuing education in a foreign country can be financially demanding, and as a non-U.S. citizen, I faced limited access to scholarships and financial aid, making it necessary to find alternative sources of funding like this. To conquer the language barrier, I engaged in language workshops, and language exchange programs, and sought additional tutoring. Immersing myself in English-speaking environments helped me enhance my language skills significantly. To overcome cultural adjustments, I actively participated in campus clubs and events that celebrated cultural diversity. Engaging in conversations with students from various backgrounds fostered a sense of inclusivity and belonging. Seeking guidance from international student services and legal advisors helped me navigate visa and legal complexities. Staying informed about changing regulations enabled me to maintain compliance with immigration laws. I diligently researched scholarships, grants, and part-time job opportunities available to international students. Additionally, I explored collaborations with organizations and foundations that support education for non-U.S. citizens. My career aspirations are rooted in my passion for business, marketing, and sales, and its transformative impact on society. I aim to pursue a degree in Business Administration Management, as it offers endless possibilities for innovation and problem-solving. My interest in this field has been nurtured through experiences with connections, building trust, closing deals, and witnessing my parents skillfully negotiate their way through challenging situations in their respective careers. Furthermore, pursuing post-secondary education in the U.S. provides me with unparalleled opportunities for personal and professional growth. The country's reputation for academic excellence, innovative research facilities, and exposure to diverse perspectives make it an ideal destination to foster my aspirations. As a non-U.S. citizen pursuing education in the United States, my journey has been shaped by numerous challenges, from overcoming language barriers to adapting to a new cultural environment. However, with determination, resilience, and a supportive community, I have triumphed over these obstacles. My passion for business and the desire to make a meaningful impact on society drive my career aspirations, making post-secondary education in the U.S. a pivotal step in achieving my goals. I embrace the journey with an open heart, ready to seize every opportunity and contribute my best to the world of sales and marketing. - Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

My Mental Health Story In 2016, when I was 11 years old, I had to face a harsh reality that to this day only nightmares that I don’t want to remember. My mother was going through economic and health problems that, in one way or another, ended up affecting my mental health. As for the economy, I spent a whole year of high school without being able to pay tuition, and at the time of the final exams, my mom had to look for all the money because if not, I could not move on to the next grade; By parting with so much money, for five months, we spent much precariousness of food and physical care, until a person from his work helped her get out of that problem. In the healthy aspect, in that same year, due to the same economic problem, my mother began a depressive stage in which she no longer wanted to continue with her life, affecting her physical well-being, she could not eat anything, her stomach was closed, everything she ate, she vomited, and she did not have the strength to get out of bed. For me, every day that passed, it was like an hourglass with a leak in the bottom making extinguishing time come faster than established. My mother even said goodbye to me because she thought she would die. It was like a miracle of God that one day my mother tried again to eat and this time her body did not refuse food. For 3 months, she ate the same dish, fearing that other dishes would make her fall again; He regained his muscle mass and energy, but it wasn't the case for me. During that process, my immature mind didn’t process that all this was happening and that it was very likely that I would be orphaned at an early age. That creates in me the habit of overthinking everything and worrying about the slightest problem that may be happening in my life. In the middle of that process, I didn't eat in front of my mother because I didn't want her to feel bad because she couldn't; I walked away from my school friends because I didn't want to be asked how I felt and because of that I lost most of them but, what was I going to answer? At my young age, I didn't know what it meant to feel how I was feeling, I only knew that my life became a torment at someone else's expense and because of that I saw most of my dreams impossible to reach. Today, my mother is a renewed person thanks to the therapy sections she attended, and therefore I started seeing the world from another perspective and found out that life is not as easy as I thought it was when I was a child. I hope everyone reaches their goals without having to suffer as my mom and I did and if they do, they could show the world that everything is possible no matter how hard life gets. - Ismeily Cruz Vasquez

Maggie Kwiecien and I Conquering the World Being born in a place full of difficulties and that lacks opportunities for dreamers and determined to achieve their goals like Maggie and me, is a challenging task but possible. Growing up in a home where only your mother is present, where the need abounds plus the desire to excel is abundant, was where I lived for 18 years of my life. My desire to excel, to be someone important in the future as Maggie was, was what drove me to achieve many recognitions throughout my adolescence. Throughout my school life I was a merit student and, when I reached high school, I became interested in the United Nations models, which opened my eyes to reality. Having to debate real issues of global problems and seek solutions for them made me understand how difficult it is to live in this world when you have no one to give you by the hand and that solutions cannot be carried out as easily as they are presented. Education in risk areas was one of the topics discussed in one of the United Nations models that most marked me, when I realized that I was one of those people who lived in that situation. Finding a solution to that problem was quite difficult for me, but nevertheless I did my best and managed to win as the best delegation and the best draft resolution. From there, I started to apply my own solutions in my life and then everything started to be different. Upon graduating from high school, I decided to apply to a university in the United States, more than a goal it was a dream that I thought almost impossible, but deep down I was confident that all my efforts would be enough to fit into a foreign university. I was accepted and from there I began to doubt. My mother did not earn enough to cover the expenses, and even if I won a scholarship, I knew it would not be complete, but even so, my mother decided to risk everything and send me to study in the United States. In my first semester I saw everything as a movie; Going out with friends, night getaways, romances, fights, etc. While I gave my all-in classes, worked on campus, and went out to sell books three times a week, my mother was splitting her back to send me money to pay my tuition. All the effort was worth it, I was able to pay the difference in tuition and I was ready to start a new semester in the same way, until, the notification by the university of the increase in tuition, meal plan and housing arrived, all my energies went to the ground, but I decided not to give up and start applying for scholarships like this to help my mother and me get ahead. I am confident that I will win this scholarship because only God and I know everything my mother and I have been through to get here. “The dream of every international student is to stand out to represent their homeland and give that hope to those who see everything lost.” -Ismeily Cruz Vasquez
