My name is Isayana Ramirez-Gonzalez, I am a First-generation and a senior in high school.
I couldn’t sleep. Night after night I lay awake staring at my bedroom ceiling while the rest of the world grew quiet. Cars passed through the empty streets outside while my mind refused to rest. What started as occasional stress slowly turned into years of anxiety and insomnia. In the silence of the night, my thoughts became louder than anything around me. However, through prayer, reflection, and the courage to seek help, I learned to trust both God’s plan and my ability to grow. The nights were the hardest. I would close my eyes hoping sleep would come, but instead my mind filled with endless “what ifs.” What if I failed my exam? What if I didn’t study enough? What if everything I had worked for fell apart? One night before an important exam, I remember staring at the clock as it went from midnight to three in the morning. I had studied for hours, but my mind kept telling me it wasn’t enough. Instead of resting, I stayed awake replaying every mistake I could make the next day.
Hours passed and I was still awake, exhausted but unable to rest. I felt trapped inside my own mind while the night stretched longer and longer. When I finally managed to fall asleep, it never felt like enough before the cycle began again the next night. After experiencing this for years, I began to believe that something must be wrong with me. I carried the pressure silently, unsure how to talk about it or where to find help. During that time, my faith became the one place where I could find peace. One verse that stayed with me was Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Whenever life felt uncertain, I reminded myself that God had a purpose for my life, even when I could not yet see it. This belief slowly began to change how I viewed my struggles.
My faith also helped me realize something; trusting God did not mean facing my problems alone. Instead, it meant having the ability and courage to seek the help I needed. After many years of believing something was wrong with me, I made the difficult decision to reach out and begin therapy. That step became one of the most important decisions I have ever made. Through therapy, I learned healthier ways to manage anxiety and understand my thoughts. Slowly, I began to feel more confident in myself and realized that asking for help was not a weakness but a step toward growth. This experience has strongly shaped the goals I now have for my future. I plan to attend a four-year university where I will major in business and eventually earn my MBA. I am drawn to business because it allows people to make high-impact decisions, shape organizational culture, and achieve meaningful professional and financial milestones. I enjoy leadership roles and the responsibility that comes with making important decisions.
Overcoming this challenge also changed how I see leadership. Learning to confront my struggles taught me resilience, thoughtful decision-making, and the importance of seeking guidance. My faith reminded me that my life has purpose, while therapy helped me gain the confidence to pursue that purpose. As I move forward toward college and my career, I carry these lessons with me, knowing that faith, perseverance, and commitment to growth will continue to guide my path.
