Throughout my education journey, one teacher has stood out the most, that teacher being my Associated Student Body (ASB) adviser, Mr. Reyes. Mr. Reyes graduated high school and immediately went to pursue his degree in English education at California State University of Long Beach (CSULB). He spent 4 years and a semester at CSULB, once he graduated with his bachelors he immediately began teaching right after. Afterwards he started the credential and masters program at Dominguez Hills. Once he received his single subject English credential, followed by a masters degree in education, he focused on curriculum and instruction. While he was at Dominguez Hills pursuing his masters, he was also teaching full time, he was a ninth and tenth grade teacher, as well as the ASB adviser. His dedication to education and commitment to supporting students is something I experienced firsthand during my time in ASB. Being in ASB all throughout high school I’ve been able to grow into a better person all with the help and guidance of Mr. Reyes. He has taught me how to break out of my comfort zone and become the leader I am today. I went from being a timid freshman to an outgoing, well-spoken senior. If I were to tell my freshman year self that now I could speak in a room full of people, guide my peers, and not be afraid to speak up for what’s right, my freshman year self would have never believed it. Mr. Reyes would always remind us that we have to learn how to “be comfortable with being uncomfortable” meaning that it is important to take on new challenges even when they may feel difficult. Instead of avoiding these difficult challenges he has taught us how to step out of our comfort zone, which not only helped me with ASB but with my school work as well. I became more confident asking my teachers and peers for help whenever I was confused on the material, or even stayed after school if it meant being the only one at tutoring. Because of Mr. Reyes’ guidance I have learned that stepping out of my comfort zone is essential for personal growth and success in my education. With Mr. Reyes' guidance, I have gained the confidence to pursue higher education and continue to challenge myself academically. He has shown me that growth happens when we are willing to take risks and step out of our comfort zones. The lessons he taught me about leadership, perseverance, and believing in my abilities will stay with me as I continue my education. As I move forward into college and beyond, I will carry these lessons with me and continue to push myself to reach my full potential.
