“I Matter” Scholarship
A time I helped someone in need was during basketball season. A teammate of mine needed some new basketball shoes because his ripped while playing. Our team was getting ready for the season, and everyone was focused on conditioning and tryouts. I noticed that he was still wearing the same worn-out shoes and he mentioned that he needed a new pair but couldn't get any at the moment. At first he tried to play like it didn't matter, but it was affecting his performance during tryouts.
So one day after conditioning, I asked him about it and he told me his mom wasn't going to buy him a new pair of shoes because of their situation at the time. After having that conversation with him, it reminded me of myself when my mother refused to buy me a new pair of shoes too and said I had to work for them. I understood how he felt, especially when you're trying to compete and you don't have what you need to do so.
Instead of just feeling bad for him, I decided to do something about it. Me and a couple of my teammates were talking and came up with a plan to all come up with $50 to buy him some new basketball shoes. We wanted to get him something that had great quality so he feels good on the court. It did take a little time before we could get them, but we managed to buy his shoes before the season officially started.
You could visibly tell how much it meant to him that he had some new shoes to play in. It wasn't just about the shoes, but about knowing his teammates had his back and cared enough to look out for him. Seeing just how grateful he was made me realize how big of an impact one decision can make. It also made me think about how small acts of kindness, like helping someone get the right equipment, can make a lasting difference in their confidence and motivation.
This experience taught me that helping someone doesn’t always take something big. Sometimes it just takes paying attention and being willing to step up. It also showed me what leadership really means. It’s not just about how you play, but how you support the people around you.
In the end, helping my teammate wasn’t just about getting him shoes. It was about making sure he had a fair chance to succeed. That’s something I’ll always carry with me, and it’s a lesson I try to remember in everything I do, both on and off the court.

Community service has always been a meaningful way for me to stay connected to the people around me and understand the needs that exist beyond my own experiences. Through volunteering, I have learned that even the smallest acts of service can have a powerful impact, especially when they are done with consistency an genuine care. My experiences serving my community have shaped both my character and my future goals. Which motivates me to pursue a career in law so I can continue giving in a more impactful and lasting way.
One of the most meaningful volunteer experiences was participating in a community day hosted by my church. During this event, I helped support a variety of activities designed to bring people together, provide resources, and create a welcoming environment for families in the community. This experience showed me the importance of service and unity. Seeing how a single event could uplift so many individuals reinforced my belief that service is essential to building strong communities.
In addition to my work at the church, I volunteer at a homeless shelter where my role involves preparing and serving meals to individuals experiencing homelessness. This experience was eye opening and humbling. It allowed me to see firsthand how many people struggle to meet basic needs such as food and shelter. More important, it remined me that dignity and respect matter just as much as material assistance. Taking the time to serve meals and interact with others taught me empathy, patience, and the importance of treating everyone as equal, regardless of their circumstances.
These volunteer experiences have influences my decisions to pursue a career as a lawyer. As a future attorney, I plan to use my education and skills to advocate for the individuals who may not have the resources or knowledge to defend themselves. Many people in underserved communities face legal challenges related to housing, employment, and civil rights. With a law degree, I will be equipped to help individuals navigate these issues and ensure they are treated fairly within the legal system. My educational goals will also allow me to give back through community legal outreach. I hope to be able to provide free or low cost legal services to those who cannot afford representation, especially individuals facing housing insecurity or unjust treatment. Additionally, I want to educate community members about their legal rights so they can make informed decisions and protect themselves from exploitation.
Overall, t volunteer experiences have shaped my desire to serve others both now and in the future. By becoming a lawyer, I will be able to extend my commitment to service beyond volunteer events and into lifelong career focused on justice, advocacy ,and community empowerment. This scholarship would support my journey toward achieving these goals and confusing to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
