My final year of high school helped to affirm my journey in music. Senior year, I was given the opportunity to arrange and compose music for the Marching Band. I was serving as Band President and now I was given the privilege to leave a lasting imprint at my school. The opportunity to compose music! The instruments I arranged are part of the Front Ensemble; the section I am a part of. When purchasing the marching show for this year, my school’s directors did not include the pre-written Front Ensemble parts in their purchase. This allowed me to write music to supplement for the almost 10-minute-long show. The experience took countless hours of work to achieve. Having no prior experience composing, I researched professionals in various videos on the intricacies of composing music. I also sought help from Front Ensemble arranger, Frankie Rice, whose music I was fortunate to play this summer with the Gold Drum and Bugle Corps. Throughout the entire process, I gained more acumen in music on a level I would not have picked up from just playing music. I learned the importance of each voice within the Front Ensemble and how to make each instrument work within the context of a Marching Band. Along with this growth in my musical knowledge, I also grew as a leader this Marching Season. In my band, I am the Percussion Section Leader and Band President. In these roles, I am constantly leading my section through rehearsal. While I served as section leader last year, this year I gained a new perspective while leading, writing the music I teach. Last year, I led with a focus on how we played the music. This year, I led by explaining more fully the music composition and background, giving my section a deeper understanding of what they played. Our percussion scores this season reflected the results of this differing style of leading. We achieved first place, the highest percussion score our school had received in past for a highly competitive tournament. Sometimes your gifts are revealed to you. I will never forget this opportunity, and it has inspired me to remain open to all the possibilities along my journey.
