Growing up, I’ve seen how money struggles and family responsibilities can make it harder for students to follow their dreams. Many of us work just as hard as anyone else, but we face extra obstacles, worrying about paying for school, helping at home, or not having the same resources as others. These challenges don’t stop us, but they do make the path a bit tougher. My mother didn’t go to college, not because she didn’t want to, but because it was too expensive. She went straight to work to help support her family. Seeing her sacrifices motivates me to keep pushing toward my goals. I don’t want the same barriers that stopped her from pursuing higher education to stop me. Even with these challenges, I’ve learned to stay focused on what I want. Being part of the National Honor Society and the California Scholarship Federation has shown me the importance of leadership, service, and academics. I’ve worked hard to keep my grades up while balancing school, sports, and family responsibilities. Swimming has been one of the biggest parts of my life. It has taught me discipline, patience, and perseverance. Whether it’s early morning practices or tough competitions, swimming reminds me that progress comes from showing up and giving it my best every day. My biggest passion is marine biology. Since I was little, I’ve been drawn to the ocean and fascinated by everything that lives in it. I want to study marine ecosystems, protect endangered animals, and help fight problems like climate change and pollution. This dream isn’t just about science, it’s about making my family proud. I want my younger brother and other kids in my community to see that it’s possible to dream big and make those dreams real, even when the road isn’t easy. A scholarship would mean so much. It would ease the financial stress on my family and give me the chance to focus fully on my education instead of worrying about how to pay for it. It would also inspire me, knowing that people believe in me and in my potential. If I’m given this support, I will make the most of it. I will continue working toward my goal of becoming a marine biologist while growing as a leader, swimmer, and family member. Most of all, I want to show that dedication and determination truly can change the future.

My name is Isabella Matthews, and I am a junior at Freedom High School. I work hard in both academics and activities because I believe education is important and it opens doors in life. I maintain a high GPA and am a member of the National Honor Society, California Scholastic Federation, Black Student Union, and the school swim team. Swimming is one of my greatest passions. The water has always felt like a second home to me. When I’m swimming, it’s as if the world quiets down, the water gives me a feeling of freedom and peace that I can’t find anywhere else. It’s where I can focus, challenge myself, and push my limits without distractions. Being part of the swim team has taught me discipline, teamwork, and the importance of consistency. To help with expenses and stay connected to something I love, I work part-time as a swim instructor. Teaching others to swim is incredibly rewarding. I enjoy seeing people go from nervous to confident in the water, and knowing I’ve helped give them a life-saving skill feels amazing. It’s not just a job for me, it’s a way to share something that has brought me so much joy while also saving for my education. Outside of swimming, I’m passionate about helping my community and making a difference in the lives of others. My long-term goal is to become a Marine Biologist. I want to study marine life and help protect our oceans from pollution and climate change. Our planet’s oceans are home to millions of species, and they are essential for the health of the environment. I want to inspire others to care about the oceans as much as I do. However, pursuing my dream comes with financial challenges. My family works hard, but the cost of college, especially in a science field with lab work and possible travel for research, can be overwhelming. I am determined not to let finances hold me back, which is why this scholarship would make such a big difference. Receiving this scholarship would help ease the stress of paying for my education. It would allow me to focus more on my studies, research, and training without having to work so many extra hours just to make ends meet. It would also give me the chance to take advantage of opportunities like internships, volunteer programs, and workshops that can help me grow as a future scientist. I am committed to using my education to help others and make a positive impact on the world. Whether it’s teaching children to swim, mentoring younger students, or sharing my knowledge of marine life, I want to give back to my community in meaningful ways. I believe that when people are given the tools and support they need to succeed, they can inspire change far beyond themselves. This scholarship is not just financial assistance, it’s an investment in my future and the future of the work I plan to do. It would help me move one step closer to my goal of earning a degree in Marine Biology, protecting our oceans, and teaching others about the importance of environmental conservation. I am ready to put in the hard work, and with this support, I know I can make my dream a reality. Thank you.

Leadership and science work together to shape our future in powerful ways. Science gives us the knowledge and tools to solve problems, while leadership guides how that knowledge is used to make a positive difference. Without strong leadership, scientific discoveries might not reach the people who need them most. Without science, leaders would not have the information needed to make smart choices. Science shapes our future by helping us understand the world around us and by creating solutions to challenges like climate change, disease, and food shortages. Every new discovery, whether it’s a medical breakthrough, a clean energy source, or an environmental protection method, has the potential to improve lives. Science is about curiosity, testing ideas, and finding the truth, which are all essential for progress. Leadership shapes our future by setting goals, inspiring others, and making decisions that impact entire communities or even the world. Good leaders listen, work with others, and keep the bigger picture in mind. They make sure scientific knowledge is applied in ways that are ethical, fair, and focused on helping people. When leadership and science come together, real change can happen. For example, during a health crisis, scientists research treatments and vaccines, but leaders must organize resources, communicate clearly, and make sure those solutions reach everyone. In environmental issues, scientists study the effects of pollution, but leaders create laws and programs to protect our planet. This connection between science and leadership inspires my dream of becoming a Marine Biologist. I want to use science to study and protect ocean ecosystems, but I also want to lead efforts that inspire communities to take action against threats like pollution and climate change. By combining scientific research with strong leadership, I believe I can help create a future where our oceans and our planet are healthier for generations to come.

My name is Isabella Matthews, and I am a senior at Freedom High School. I am also a first-generation college student, being the first in my family to attend college. This is an achievement I am deeply proud of, not just for myself, but for my entire family. It represents years of hard work, dedication, and the dreams of my parents and grandparents, who made sacrifices to give me opportunities they never had. I come from a culturally diverse and vibrant background. My father is African American, and my mother is Latina with roots in El Salvador. Growing up in a home where two cultures came together has shaped me in ways I will carry forever. I grew up surrounded by two different languages, traditions, foods, and ways of seeing the world. This blend of cultures taught me to appreciate diversity, to listen to different perspectives, and to adapt when things change. Most importantly, it taught me to be strong and resilient. Life is not always easy, but my upbringing has given me the determination to keep going even when challenges arise. One of my greatest passions has always been the ocean. Ever since I was little, I’ve been fascinated by marine life, the beauty of coral reefs, the mystery of deep-sea creatures, and the way every part of the ocean is connected to the health of our planet. I remember watching documentaries about sea turtles and coral bleaching and feeling both amazed and concerned. I knew I wanted to be part of the solution. That passion is why I plan to major in Marine Biology. My dream is to study ocean ecosystems, protect endangered species, and work on solutions to problems like pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. I want to not only conduct research but also share it with others so more people understand why protecting the ocean is so important for all of us. Even with a clear vision for my future, I know this road ahead won’t be without challenges. One of the biggest obstacles I face is financial hardship. My parents have always worked incredibly hard to provide for me and my younger brother, but money has always been tight. College brings big expenses, like tuition, books, housing, transportation and I know how heavy that burden will be on my family. To help, I work part-time as a swim instructor. Teaching others to swim has been an incredibly rewarding experience because I get to share a skill I love while also saving for my education. Swimming has always been my passion, the water gives me a sense of freedom, peace, and strength that I can’t find anywhere else. Being able to pass that feeling on to my students makes the experience even more meaningful. But even with my savings, I know I will not be able to cover all the costs of college on my own. Being a first-generation college student also comes with unique challenges. Since no one in my family has been through this process before, I have had to figure things out step by step, how to apply to colleges, how financial aid works, and how to explore different career paths. It could be overwhelming. There have been moments when I felt lost or unsure of what to do next. But I’ve learned to ask questions, to seek out help, and to take advantage of the resources available to me. I have connected with teachers, counselors, and mentors who have guided me and given me the confidence to keep moving forward. This scholarship would make a tremendous difference in my life. It would ease the financial strain on my family, allowing me to focus more on my education instead of constantly worrying about how to pay for it. It would also be a reminder that there are people who believe in me and in my potential to make a positive impact in the world. Scholarships are more than just financial help, they are an investment in someone’s future, and I would be deeply honored to have that kind of support. I am also motivated by my younger brother, who looks up to me. I want to show him that no matter where you come from or what challenges you face, you can achieve your dreams with hard work, determination, and support. He is one of my biggest reasons for pushing forward because I want him to see that it’s possible to create a better future for yourself, even when the odds seem stacked against you. Ultimately, I want my journey to inspire others in my community, especially young people who may not see many role models in fields like science. I want them to know that they can chase big dreams, even if they are the first in their family to do so, and even if the path is not always easy. Thank you!

Swimming has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. It all began when my mom signed me up for my first swim class, I had no idea how much this would shape who I am today. From the moment I first entered the water, I was fascinated by the sensation of floating of being free. That feeling stuck with me, and over the years, my curiosity changed into a deep passion for the sport. As I moved up through the swim levels, I started to feel more confident and got better at swimming. Eventually, I reached the highest level at my swim school. This is when the instructor noticed not just how well I could swim, but also how excited I was to learn. She asked me to become a junior instructor, and I was able to help show new swimmers how to do different techniques. This moment changed everything for me. I realized I didn’t just love swimming, I also loved teaching others how to swim. Now, I’m proud to be a swim instructor. I teach both kids and adults, and it’s one of the most meaningful things I do. Many people I teach are nervous or scared when they first come in, unsure if they’ll ever be able to swim. It’s amazing to watch them go from being scared to swimming across the pool with confidence. For me, swimming is more than just a skill, it’s a way to build confidence and strength. Besides teaching, I’ve been on my school’s swim team since my freshman year. Being on the team has taught me a lot about life. I’ve learned how to work hard, manage my time, and be a good teammate. Practice can be tough, and swim meets can make me nervous, but they’ve helped me grow stronger. Swimming has made me more focused and determined, which has helped me in school and in other parts of my life, too. Most of all, swimming has helped me figure out what I want to do in the future. My love for the water made me really interested in the ocean and sea animals, and now I want to become a marine biologist. I hope to explore the ocean, protect marine life, and help others understand how important it is to care for our planet’s waters. When I look back, I’m so thankful my mom took me to that first swim class. What started as something fun has turned into a big part of who I am. Swimming has given me confidence and purpose. Swimming will always be an important part of my life.

Hello, my name is Isabella Matthews, and I’m a 16-year-old high school junior from Oakley, CA. Growing up as a first-generation student from a mixed heritage—my father is African American, and my mother is Hispanic with roots in El Salvador—has played a big role in shaping who I am. My family’s journey, full of strength and determination, has had a major impact on my goals and the challenges I’ve faced along the way. One of the biggest challenges I’ve encountered is our financial situation. My parents have always worked hard to support our family, but money has often been tight. I grew up watching my parents make sacrifices to ensure my siblings and I had what we needed. My mother worked long hours while also helping my grandmother, who struggled with the language barrier as a Spanish-speaking immigrant. These experiences taught me the importance of dedication and made me realize the financial challenges that come with pursuing higher education and achieving my dreams. From a very young age, I developed a deep love for the ocean and marine life. My mom would always say I was her mermaid. I remember watching documentaries about the marine ecosystems and being captivated by the different life beneath the waves. This fascination quickly turned into a desire to learn more about marine biology and protection. But I knew that the road ahead would not be easy, especially given our financial limitations. My passion for marine biology is driven by my concern for the environment and the impact of us humans on the marine ecosystems. The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet, yet we still know so little about it. The more I learn about the ocean’s important role in regulating our climate, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining human life, the more I feel the need to contribute to its protection. I want to dedicate my career to studying marine ecosystems, understanding the threats they face, and finding ways to lessen those threats. One major obstacle I’ve faced on this journey is the financial barrier to accessing opportunities that would allow me to explore my passion. I was eager to participate in programs and internships that offered hands-on experience in marine biology, but many of these opportunities came with a cost that my family simply couldn’t afford. I knew that if I wanted to achieve my dream, I would need to find ways to overcome these financial problems. To do this, I started searching for scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial assistance to help me pursue my education in marine biology. This summer I’ve also worked part-time to save money for college. These experiences have taught me the value of hard work, resourcefulness, and persistence. Despite the financial challenges, I’ve remained committed to my goal of becoming a marine biologist, and I’m determined to find a way to make it happen. Another challenge I’ve faced is social anxiety, this has often made it difficult for me to participate in activities and take advantage of opportunities that could help me advance in my field. Social anxiety has been a constant issue in my life, making everyday interactions feel like impossible obstacles. The fear of being judged or making mistakes has often left me feeling paralyzed and unable to fully engage with my peers around me. One of the most significant challenges I faced due to my social anxiety was applying to become part of the Youth Crew for the Marine Mammal Center. This program has a perfect opportunity for me to gain hands-on experience in marine biology, and I was incredibly excited about it. But, during the group interview, my anxiety stopped the ability to fully show my personality and skills. I struggled to speak up and participate actively, which made me feel like I had missed out on a crucial opportunity to advance toward my dream. But, despite this intense fear and discomfort, I refuse to let social anxiety control my life. I’m determined to overcome this obstacle and achieve my dream of becoming a marine biologist. I know it's important to manage my anxiety, so I’ve started taking steps to build my confidence and lessen my fears. I began by challenging myself to raise my hand in class at least once a week and to start conversations with classmates, even if it was just a simple greeting or a comment about a homework assignment. These small tasks will help me toward conquering my fears. Now, I’m preparing to reapply to the Youth Crew program at the Marine Mammal Center. This time, I feel more prepared and confident in my ability to participate fully. I’ve practiced my interview skills, asked for feedback from teachers and past interviewers, and nonstop worked on managing my anxiety. I believe that my perseverance and determination will shine through and help me secure a spot in the program. Looking ahead, I’m committed to making a significant impact in the field of marine biology. I hope to help in the preservation and restoration of marine ecosystems, especially in the areas that are most affected by climate change and pollution. I want to use my knowledge and skills to develop solutions that will protect marine life and ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty and resources of our oceans. Receiving this scholarship would be a crucial step in my journey toward achieving these goals. It would provide the financial support I need to further my studies and I will gain the experience necessary to make a meaningful impact in the field of marine biology. With this scholarship, I would be able to focus more on my education and less on the financial challenges that have always been a part of my life. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity and hopeful that, with your support, I can turn my passion for marine biology into reality.

In my everyday life, I support others by being a source of encouragement and assistance, particularly within my family and school community. At home, I help my younger sibling with their homework, ensuring they understand their lessons and feel confident in their abilities. At school, I try to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable and are able to share their thoughts and ask any questions. I understand what it’s like to struggle with anxiety, so I’m always willing to lend an ear or offer advice to classmates who might be feeling overwhelmed. My experiences with social anxiety have made me empathetic toward others who face similar challenges, and I make an effort to be approachable and supportive. Looking at the future, I plan and hope to continue supporting others through my career as a marine biologist. I want to contribute to the preservation efforts that protect marine ecosystems and ensure that the resources we rely on are preserved for future generations. I would love to engage in public education and outreach to raise awareness about the importance of ocean conservation. I believe that it is important to educate communities about the environment can encourage them to act and become advocates for change. I also hope to mentor students who are passionate about marine biology but may face obstacles like those I’ve come across. It might be by helping them navigate financial challenges, manage anxiety, or find opportunities to explore their interests, I want to be a resource and role model for the next generation of scientists. By sharing my experience and the lessons I’ve learned, I hope to motivate others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.

    Social Anxiety Step Forward Scholarship
Hello, my name is Isabella Matthews. I am a 16-year-old high school junior from Oakley, CA. Since I was young, I have always dreamed of becoming a Marine Biologist. My love for the ocean has inspired me to learn more about marine life and its conservation. However, it has not been easy. One significant obstacle I have faced is my social anxiety, which has often made it difficult for me to participate in activities and pursue my goals. Despite this, I have worked hard to develop a positive mindset and persevere through my struggles. Social anxiety has been a hard challenge throughout my life. It shows up as a consuming fear of social situations, making everyday interactions feel like an impossible obstacle. Simple tasks like speaking up in class, making new friends, or even participating in group activities often fill me with an intense fear of being judged or making mistakes. This fear has often left me feeling paralyzed and unable to fully engage with the world around me. One of the most significant challenges I faced due to my social anxiety was applying to become part of the Youth Crew for the Marine Mammal Center. This program was a perfect opportunity for me to gain hands-on experience in marine biology, and I was incredibly excited about it. However, during the group interview, my anxiety hindered my ability to fully show my personality and skills. I struggled to speak up and participate actively, which made me feel like I had missed out on a crucial opportunity to advance toward my dream. Despite the intense fear and discomfort, I refuse to let social anxiety control my life. I am determined to overcome this obstacle and achieve my dream of becoming a Marine Biologist. Recognizing the importance of managing my anxiety, I have started taking steps to build my confidence and reduce my fears. One of the strategies is setting small, manageable goals that push me out of my comfort zone gradually. For instance, I began by challenging myself to raise my hand in class at least once a week. Initially, this was incredibly difficult, and I would often feel a surge of panic just thinking about it. However, with each successful attempt, I gained a bit more confidence. Similarly, I made it a goal to start conversations with classmates, even if it was just a simple greeting or a comment about a homework assignment. These small victories, while seemingly minor, have been significant steps toward conquering my fears. With the determination and progress I've made; I am now preparing to reapply to the Youth Crew program at the Marine Mammal Center. This time, I feel more prepared and confident in my ability to participate fully. I have practiced my interview skills, asked for feedback from mentors, and continuously worked on managing my anxiety. I believe that my perseverance and determination will shine through and help me secure a spot in the program. In conclusion, while social anxiety has been a significant obstacle in my life, it has also taught me the value of grit and determination. Each step I take to manage my anxiety brings me closer to achieving my dream of becoming a Marine Biologist. This scholarship would provide the financial support I need to further my studies and reach my full potential. Thank you for considering my application. I am grateful for the opportunity and hope to inspire other young girls to embody grit and persevere in the face of adversity.

    Team USA Fan Scholarship
Hello, my name is Isabella, and I’m a junior in high school. I’ve been thrilled watching the Olympics, and my favorite athlete to cheer for on Team USA is Katie Ledecky. Her amazing achievements in swimming are truly inspiring. Katie's talent, hard work, and dedication make her a great role model for me, especially since I’m a high school swimmer with dreams of working in Marine Biology. Watching Katie compete is always exciting. Her success in long-distance freestyle events, where she breaks records and wins gold medals, shows off her strength and mental toughness. Her commitment to training and pushing herself to be the best really speaks to me and as a member of my school’s swim team, I look up to how Katie’s focus and determination lead to impressive results in the pool. Katie’s success motivates me to work hard in both swimming and academics. I hope to combine my love for swimming with my goal of studying Marine Biology. Her example reminds me that hard work and resilience are crucial for reaching my dreams. Cheering for Katie Ledecky is more than just supporting a top athlete; it inspires me to strive for excellence and make a positive impact in Marine Biology.
    Sharon L. Smartt Memorial Scholarship
Hello, my name is Isabella and as a first-generation honor roll junior in high school, I have always tried hard to achieve academic excellence and make my family proud. Being the first in my family to pursue higher education, I carry the hopes and dreams of my parents and grandparents, who have sacrificed much to provide me with opportunities they never had. My background is diverse and rich, with my father being African American and my mother being Hispanic with a heritage from El Salvador. This blend of cultures has given me a unique perspective and a strong drive to pursue my dreams, but it has also presented financial and personal challenges that I am determined to overcome. Growing up, money has always been tight. My parents work hard to provide for our family, but I know the costs of higher education are overwhelming. Pursuing a degree in Marine Biology is my passion, but the financial burden of college tuition, books, and living expenses is a significant difficulty. I have taken on part-time work as a swim instructor to save for college and help ease the financial strain on my family. However, it is still not enough to cover the costs of a college education. Another challenge is navigating the educational system as a first-generation student has been another challenge. Without a family history of higher education, I often find myself learning and figuring out processes on my own. From understanding college applications and financial aid forms to finding the right academic and career resources, the lack of a clear roadmap can be overwhelming. However, I have learned to seek guidance from mentors, teachers, and peers who have gone through similar experiences. Their support has been invaluable in helping me navigate the complexities of higher education. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to my dream of becoming a Marine Biologist. I am passionate about the ocean and its ecosystems, and I want to contribute to their preservation and study. My family’s struggles and their unwavering support have been a constant source of motivation. They have shown me the importance of resilience, hard work, and the pursuit of a better future. Receiving this scholarship would be a significant step toward achieving my aspirations. It would provide the financial support needed to pursue my degree and allow me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of financial strain. With this support, I am confident that I can overcome the challenges I face and make meaningful contributions to the field of Marine Biology.
    Nintendo Super Fan Scholarship
My favorite game to play in co-op mode is Super Mario 3D World. This game perfectly mixes classic Mario platforming with modern 3D design, making it great for playing together. One memorable moment that made Super Mario 3D World my top choice was playing with my brother, who loves Mario games. He has been a fan since I can remember, and his excitement makes our gaming sessions extra special. We were trying to beat World 5-3, the tough "A Banquet with Hisstocrat" boss level. Even with many tries, we kept getting defeated by the giant snake-like boss, Hisstocrat. We were getting frustrated, but my brother never gave up. In one attempt, we decided to plan better and assign roles. I focused on grabbing power-ups and keeping everyone strong, while my brother concentrated on climbing the plates and hitting Hisstocrat's weak spots. His excitement and determination were contagious, and we started to work much better together. As we shouted instructions and tried to avoid falling plates, my brother managed to make a series of perfect jumps, hitting Hisstocrat's head multiple times. The best moment was when we both jumped on Hisstocrat's head at the same time, defeating him. Seeing the joy on my brother's face is one of my favorite memories. This shared victory showed how great the game is for co-op play.
