John "Sam" Collins Memorial Scholarship
I am passionate about being who I am and what I am. I am Mexican American. I will be the first in my family to graduate from college. Being the first means carrying both pride and responsibility, and I am committed to using my education to uplift myself and pave the way for others like me. I am also setting an example for my younger brother so that he can attend college like I am. I always tell him that he needs to work hard in school so he can get good grades like me. He is an awesome baseball player, and I hope that his hard work and dedication will get him to his favorite college. He always states that he wants to play in major leagues. I hope he does.
It will mean more to me than a degree, it will be a tribute to me and my family. My parents have sacrificed so much to support me to attend college, and they continue supporting me. This scholarship will help me to continue my education. Education has always been more than a personal goal; it is a way to honor my family's hard work and open doors for future generations like my younger brother. I carry not only my own dreams but also my parents dream to see me graduate from college. It is something that even my grandparents will be proud of me to accomplish.
My journey is attending college and majoring in Exercise Science. Also, to become a physical therapist in the future. My goal growing up was to play collegiate softball. I am also honored and have so much pride to say that I am playing collegiate softball. It is a dream come true. I started playing softball when I was 7 years old. There are not many Mexican American softball players playing and I want to change that. I want these young girls to know that they can play any sport out there and they can go to any college to play the sport that they love. Yes, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication but everything in life does. I want them to know that it is not easy. You have to learn how to manage your time for your studies and practice. Some days are harder than others. But you have to learn that you cannot give up. You must have faith and the strength to keep going.
Thank you for taking the time to read my essay. Have a good day!

The only way to get through this is to move on. You will be judged no matter what color, race, religion, or gender. It is sad that society has come to this. These words have guided me through some of the toughest moments in my life. As a Hispanic woman and the first in my family to attend college, I have faced adversity that tested my strength and determination.
Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to go to college. My parents worked hard to provide for our family, but they never had the opportunity to pursue higher education. I was determined to change that. However, the road to college was not easy. I often felt the weight of expectations and the pressure to succeed, not just for myself but for my family.
In high school, I balanced my studies with playing softball and volunteering as a scorekeeper for my brother's baseball team. Despite my 3.7 GPA, there were times when I felt overwhelmed. I remember one particular instance during my junior year when I was struggling to keep up with my coursework, softball practice, and volunteer work. I felt like I was drowning in responsibilities.
What kept me going was the realization that I was not alone. My family, coaches, and teachers believed in me. They reminded me that setbacks are temporary and that perseverance is key. I learned to prioritize my time, ask for help when needed, and stay focused on my goals. This experience taught me the importance of resilience and the power of a support system.
Overcoming adversity has shaped me into a more determined and compassionate person. It has taught me that challenges are opportunities for growth. I have learned to embrace my identity and take pride in my heritage. Being judged for my race or gender no longer discourages me; instead, it fuels my desire to break stereotypes and prove that I am capable of achieving my dreams.
As I enter Montreat College to study Kinesiology and Physical Therapy, I carry these lessons with me. I am excited to continue playing college softball and to be the first in my family to attend college. I know that there will be more challenges ahead, but I am ready to face them with the same determination and resilience that have brought me this far.
To anyone facing similar circumstances, my advice is simple: Believe in yourself and keep moving forward. Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you. Do not be afraid to ask for help and take pride in your journey. Remember that adversity is a part of life, but it does not define you. How you respond to it does.
In conclusion, adversity has been a powerful teacher in my life. It has shaped me into a stronger, more determined individual. I am grateful for the challenges I have faced and the lessons I have learned. I am ready to take on the future with confidence and resilience, knowing that I have the strength to overcome any obstacle.
