Bio

I am currently 17 years old and a senior in high school and I am so excited for college! When I was just 7 years old, I was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis which causes multiple issues on the body. I myself had severe scoliosis with an 83 degree curve in my spine and a brain stem glioma. Since then. I have received a spinal fusion and am doing great! Although I am still currently battling my brain stem glioma, I am doing pretty good! I am looking to impact the medical field by being a pediatric nurse. Being in the hospital since I was little and I continue to, I have learned a lot from what I've been around and I believe I could be an incredible addition to a hospital! On my own time, I enjoy the beach/swimming, social media and photography, babysitting, baking and cooking, I love doing my makeup and skincare, attending family events, anything to do with animals, traveling, and more!

Jessica's Journey Brain Tumor Survivor Scholarship
The diagnosis of a brain tumor was a profound turning point in my life. I was just 12 years old and it had reshaped my perspective and ambitions. I was diagnosed with a brain tumor while I was supposed to be getting an MRI for my severe scoliosis. I was facing something so life-threatening brought forth fear, uncertainty, and an unexpected sense of inner strength. Initially, the diagnosis seemed to cast a shadow over my aspirations, but it ultimately became a bright light and idea for a deeper understanding of myself and my true calling of becoming a nurse. The rigorous treatment and its challenges taught me resilience and perseverance. I discovered a new appreciation for life’s fleeting moments and the strength within me that I hadn’t fully realized I had before. What motivates me to move forward is this very strength and a desire to turn adversity into opportunity. My experiences have shown a profound empathy and a drive to contribute positively to the world. I am motivated by the hope of taking my challenges as a source of inspiration for others facing similar battles. The support I received during my treatment illuminated and truly shined the importance of compassion and community, values that I am eager to integrate into my future career. Academically, I am dedicated to pursuing a degree in nursing with a specialty in pediatric care. My experience with a brain tumor, and wanting to be a nurse my whole life, truly have sparked a deep interest in helping children and families navigate challenges. I aim to strive in my journey to provide compassionate and informed specialized care to young patients, hoping to give comfort and support during their difficult times. In my career, I envision becoming a pediatric nurse who not only provides exceptional medical care but also emotional support and advocacy for children and their families. My goal is to make a true difference in the lives of young patients, inspired by my own experiences and the support that guided me through my journey. For example, I have never forgotten about these two nurses who took care of me during my month-long hospital stay. In summary, the impact of my brain tumor has been incredibly transformative, influencing my goals, and shaping what my true future should consist of. I am committed to turning my experiences into a force for positive change, guided by a passion for nursing and aiming to contribute positively as a pediatric nurse.
