Rev. and Mrs. E B Dunbar Scholarship
One of the biggest obstacles I have faced in my pursuit of higher education has been balancing my academic responsibilities with my deep commitment to community involvement and personal growth. Ever since I was young, I have been passionate about understanding people and helping others, which led me to dream of becoming a Criminal Psychologist. I have always wanted to work with individuals in the justice system, helping them rebuild their lives after facing consequences for their actions, however, pursuing this goal has required me to navigate rigorous academics, time-consuming volunteer work, and personal responsibilities, all while maintaining the motivation to succeed in the long term.
Managing these demands has not always been easy. As a Girl Scout, I have dedicated countless hours to volunteering, earning high awards, and am currently working toward my Gold Award, which involves leadership, planning, and creating a project that has a meaningful impact on my community. In addition, I am an active member of my Oblate Youth Group at Immaculate Conception Church, where I participate in charitable events, youth programs, and community service. Juggling schoolwork, extracurriculars, and volunteer commitments has taught me discipline, time management, and resilience. Each obstacle I overcame reinforced my determination to reach my goals and my belief that hard work and dedication truly pay off.
These experiences have also strengthened my desire to pursue a career in Criminal Psychology. I want to help individuals in the justice system, advocating for rehabilitation, understanding, and support rather than simply punishment. I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and re-enter society as a productive and responsible individual. Through my education, I hope to gain the knowledge and skills needed to analyze behavior, provide guidance, and create programs that promote rehabilitation and mental health awareness. I also want to educate communities about the importance of second chances and how support can help prevent recidivism and improve outcomes for individuals who have made mistakes.
Receiving a higher education will allow me to transform my passion into action. I plan to apply what I learn in both professional and volunteer capacities, continuing to serve my community while helping those who are struggling to find their place in society. My academic success will directly enable me to mentor, advocate, and implement strategies that make a real difference in people’s lives.
The challenges I have faced have taught me resilience, patience, and compassion. They have shaped me into someone committed to justice, empathy, and service. Through higher education, I hope to fulfill my dream of becoming a Criminal Psychologist, using my skills and experiences to help others heal, grow, and build a better future for themselves and the community.
Summer Chester Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my life, I have been surrounded by people who have given to me in ways that have truly shaped who I am. Their kindness, patience, and belief in me have helped me grow during times when I didn’t always believe in myself. Some of these gestures were small, while others were life-changing, but each one reminded me that I am never alone and that the best gift we can give to others is genuine care.
One of the biggest ways others have given to me is through support during difficult times. There have been moments when I felt overwhelmed by school, responsibilities, or self-doubt, and someone always stepped in to remind me that I was capable of more than I realized. My teachers have stayed after class to help me understand lessons, my friends have listened when I needed to talk, and my family has reminded me to keep going even when I wanted to give up. These acts of kindness made me realize that giving doesn’t always mean something grand; sometimes it’s simply being there for someone when they need it most.
I have also been deeply impacted by the people who believed in me before I believed in myself. Their encouragement gave me the strength to take risks, to chase opportunities, and to see value in my hard work. Whether it was a teacher pushing me to apply for a scholarship or a friend reminding me of my worth, those moments changed how I saw myself. They taught me that belief is one of the most powerful gifts we can offer another person.
Because of all that I have received, I want to spend my life paying it forward. I want to support others the same way I was supported, through encouragement, understanding, and kindness. I plan to give back by volunteering in my community and mentoring students who may need guidance or motivation. I want to remind others that even when life feels heavy, they have the strength to overcome it. I want to be the kind of person who lifts others up, who listens, and who shows compassion without expecting anything in return.
The people who have given to me have not only helped me grow, they have inspired me to keep spreading that kindness. I carry their generosity in my heart, and I plan to continue the cycle by being a light for others, just as they have been for me.
Wicked Fan Scholarship
I am a fan of Wicked because it tells a story about friendship, identity, and the courage to stand up for what is right, even when the world misunderstands you. The musical has always inspired me with its powerful message that there is more to every story than what people choose to see. From the moment I first heard “Defying Gravity,” I was amazed by how it captures the feeling of wanting to break free from limits and be unapologetically yourself.
What makes Wicked so meaningful to me is how it reimagines the classic story of The Wizard of Oz and gives depth to characters who were once labeled simply as “good” or “evil.” Elphaba, the so-called Wicked Witch, has always stood out to me because she represents anyone who has ever felt judged, different, or underestimated. Watching her journey taught me that being misunderstood doesn’t make you wrong, and that true strength comes from staying loyal to your values even when no one else believes in you.
The friendship between Elphaba and Glinda is another reason I love Wicked. Their relationship shows how two very different people can learn from each other and grow together. It reminds me that real friendships aren’t perfect, but they are built on acceptance and understanding. The way their bond changes over time shows how people can influence each other’s lives in ways they never expect.
The music in Wicked is also a big part of why I’m such a fan. Each song tells a story and carries so much emotion, from the humor of “Popular” to the power of “No Good Deed.” The lyrics and melodies make me feel inspired and remind me that everyone has the potential to make a difference in their own way.
Overall, Wicked has impacted the way I see the world and myself. It’s a story about courage, compassion, and finding your voice. Every time I listen to the soundtrack or watch clips from the musical, I feel empowered to “defy gravity” in my own life by following my dreams, standing up for what I believe in, and embracing who I am, even if others don’t always understand.
