Pastor Thomas Rorie Jr. Furthering Education Scholarship
The Power of Education and Service: My Aspirations and Journey
As an international student from Brazil, pursuing a college degree in the United States represents far more than academic advancement; it symbolizes the opportunity to change lives, beginning with my own and extending to those in my community. My journey has been one of resilience, faith, and a relentless pursuit of purpose. Education is not just a personal milestone; it is my pathway to creating meaningful, lasting change in a world that is often unforgiving to the vulnerable. My aspirations are driven by a desire to combine my passion for business with my commitment to service, establishing a foundation for second chances, spiritual growth, and empowerment for those in need.
This scholarship would not only alleviate the immense financial burden of being an international student but also enable me to fulfill a vision that extends beyond myself. With the rising costs of tuition and the added financial challenges of studying far from home, I have learned to navigate obstacles with faith as my compass and perseverance as my guide. However, financial constraints threaten to derail my progress, and receiving this scholarship would transform my ability to stay focused on my academic and career goals.
Growing up in Brazil, I was deeply influenced by the sacrifices of my family. They instilled in me the values of hard work, empathy, and faith, laying the foundation for the person I am today. Despite limited resources, my parents emphasized the importance of education and service, teaching me that knowledge is not just a privilege but a responsibility. Their example inspired me to dream boldly, even when faced with adversity.
When I decided to pursue higher education in the United States, I knew the journey would be demanding. As a first-generation college student and an international student, the challenges I face extend beyond academics. Navigating an unfamiliar culture, balancing financial pressures, and excelling in rigorous coursework require unwavering dedication. Despite these obstacles, I remain steadfast in my pursuit of a degree because I believe it will equip me to create a better future for myself and for others.
My goal is to graduate with a degree in business, which I see as a platform for creating meaningful change. However, I do not view business merely as a tool for financial success. To me, business is an opportunity to address social inequities, empower marginalized communities, and build sustainable solutions to pressing societal problems. My ultimate aspiration is to establish a social enterprise dedicated to providing job training, mentorship, and spiritual guidance to individuals experiencing homelessness.
This vision stems from my Christian faith, which teaches me that every person has inherent worth and the potential for redemption. One of my guiding scriptures is Isaiah 61:1: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives.” These words remind me that my purpose is not only to achieve personal success but also to serve others and inspire hope.
My experiences as a leader and volunteer with Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU) have been pivotal in shaping my aspirations. Through my work with CRU, I have organized outreach events, mentored peers, and participated in faith-based initiatives that emphasize the importance of community and service. Volunteering at CRU’s headquarters has given me the opportunity to learn about servant leadership firsthand, reinforcing my belief that leadership is about humility and uplifting others.
One of the most transformative moments in my journey occurred during a mission trip organized by CRU. During this trip, I witnessed the struggles of those living in poverty and the power of faith to bring hope and healing. This experience solidified my commitment to using my education and skills to address systemic issues such as homelessness and unemployment. It also deepened my understanding of the interconnectedness of faith, service, and social justice.
In addition to my work with CRU, I am deeply committed to engaging with my broader community. I actively participate in volunteer initiatives through my church, where I have learned the importance of collective action and the impact of small, consistent efforts to improve the lives of others. Whether it’s organizing food drives, mentoring younger students, or leading Bible studies, these experiences have taught me that true fulfillment comes from serving others and glorifying God through our actions.
Receiving this scholarship would have a transformative impact on my academic and professional journey. It would enable me to focus on excelling in my studies without the constant stress of financial insecurity. More importantly, it would allow me to continue building the foundation for my future endeavors, equipping me with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to bring my vision to life.
Beyond the financial relief, this scholarship represents an affirmation of my commitment to service and the values that drive me. It is a vote of confidence in my ability to make a difference, not only in my own life but in the lives of those I aspire to serve. With this support, I am determined to pursue excellence in my education, deepen my understanding of business and social impact, and create initiatives that embody compassion, innovation, and sustainability.
My dreams extend far beyond personal achievement. I envision a future where individuals who have been overlooked by society are given the resources and support they need to rebuild their lives. My social enterprise will serve as a bridge between hope and opportunity, offering practical tools such as job training and financial literacy programs alongside spiritual mentorship. By addressing both the material and emotional needs of those in crisis, I aim to create an environment where second chances are not only possible but abundant.
In conclusion, graduating with a college degree is not just a goal, it is a responsibility to use the opportunities I have been given to uplift others. This scholarship is more than financial support; it is a catalyst for a lifetime of service, empowerment, and impact. I am committed to honoring this investment by dedicating my life to creating a world where everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the chance to thrive. Through faith, resilience, and a heart for service, I will turn my dreams into reality, bringing light and hope to those who need it most.
Barbara Cain Literary Scholarship
The books I have read, especially the Bible, have profoundly shaped my goals and worldview. As a Christian, the Bible is my guiding text, offering not only spiritual wisdom but practical guidance for navigating life’s challenges. Through its pages, I’ve learned lessons that have molded my ambitions, helping me to focus not only on my personal success but also on how I can serve others and make a positive impact in the world.
One of the most influential books I’ve studied is Proverbs. This book is filled with practical advice for living a life of wisdom, integrity, and humility. Proverbs has taught me the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding before making decisions. It has inspired me to pursue my education with diligence and care, recognizing that wisdom is not just about academic achievement but about living a life that reflects godly principles. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages me to "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." This verse has been a cornerstone of my academic journey, reminding me to trust in God's plan for my life even when the path ahead seems unclear.
Another powerful book that has shaped my goals is the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus’ teachings about serving others and leading with a humble heart have deeply influenced my desire to pursue a career in business that is centered around serving people, especially those in need. In Matthew 20:26-28, Jesus tells His disciples, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.” These words have inspired my ambition to use my skills and education not for self-promotion, but to lift others up. I believe that true success is measured not by wealth or status, but by the positive impact you have on the lives of those around you.
In addition, the book of James has taught me the importance of putting faith into action. James 2:14-17 challenges believers to live out their faith through deeds, not just words. This principle has shaped my goals, encouraging me to integrate service and community impact into my personal and professional life. Whether through my involvement in CRU (Campus Crusades for Christ) or volunteering in my community, I have learned that faith without action is incomplete. I am determined to live out my faith by using my education to help those who are marginalized and in need, creating opportunities for them to thrive.
Finally, the letters of Paul, particularly his words in Philippians 4:13, have given me the strength to pursue my dreams with confidence. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” has been a constant reminder that my strength comes from God. This verse encourages me to step forward in faith, even when I face challenges and obstacles, knowing that God will provide the strength and wisdom I need to overcome them.
The Bible has not only provided me with spiritual guidance but also practical lessons for living a life of purpose. It has shaped my goals by teaching me the value of wisdom, service, and action. As I continue my educational journey and move forward in my career, I am committed to living out these values, striving to make a positive impact on the world, and using my education to serve others.
This Woman's Worth Scholarship
I believe I am worth the dreams I aspire to achieve because of my unwavering commitment to perseverance, faith, and service. As a first-generation immigrant and college student, I have faced challenges that have shaped me into someone determined to not only succeed but to help others along the way. My dreams are not simply about personal success—they are deeply connected to my faith and my desire to make a meaningful impact on the world.
Growing up in Brazil, I witnessed my parents’ tireless work ethic as they did everything they could to provide for our family. Although they didn’t have the opportunity to pursue higher education, they made sure I understood the value of it and encouraged me to dream big. This foundation, coupled with the sacrifices they made, has fueled my drive to pursue an education in business. I want to create a future where I can give back to my community, not just by providing opportunities but by offering a place of support and belonging.
My faith plays a central role in why I feel I am worthy of these dreams. I believe that God has a purpose for me, and He has equipped me with the strength and determination to overcome challenges. Philippians 4:13 reminds me, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." This verse has carried me through moments of doubt and hardship, and it keeps me focused on my mission to lead with integrity and compassion.
In addition to my academic goals, I am passionate about using my experiences and education to serve others. I have been involved in leadership roles at CRU, where I have had the privilege of mentoring and encouraging fellow students. I also volunteer at local organizations and am driven by a commitment to help those who face the same barriers I once did, whether due to language, financial hardships, or cultural differences. My goal is to help bridge these gaps by using my education to create sustainable opportunities that empower individuals and communities.
I understand that achieving my dreams will not be easy. It will take hard work, persistence, and faith. But I also know that the dreams I have are not just for me, they are for the people I aim to help and serve. My journey has taught me that no dream is too big if you are willing to put in the work, trust in God’s plan, and help others along the way. I am committed to living out these values and making a positive impact in the world.
This scholarship would be a vital step in helping me achieve my dreams. It would provide the financial support I need to continue my education and pursue my aspirations in business, leadership, and service. I am ready to take on the responsibility that comes with these dreams and use every opportunity to make a lasting difference.
First Generation College Scholarship
As a first-generation immigrant and first-generation college student, my identity has deeply shaped how I view the world and my place within it. Moving from Brazil to the United States was a significant step for both me and my family. My parents, who didn’t have the opportunity to attend college, instilled in me a strong work ethic and a deep value for education. This experience has taught me that hard work, sacrifice, and faith in God's plan are essential for overcoming challenges.
Adapting to a new country, new culture, and academic system has been difficult. However, my Christian faith has been a constant source of strength. I believe that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). This verse has helped me persevere through moments of doubt and hardship, reminding me that I am never alone. Faith has given me the courage to face obstacles and the humility to rely on God's guidance as I pursue my education and future goals.
Being an immigrant has also taught me the importance of community and giving back. Having faced barriers myself, I am committed to helping others who face similar struggles. My journey has shown me that resilience and faith are powerful tools for success, and I hope to use my education to create opportunities for those who need them most. I am determined to pave the way for future generations in my family and community.
Build and Bless Leadership Scholarship
My faith has always been the foundation of my leadership style, guiding my actions, decisions, and interactions with others. As a Christian, I strive to lead with humility, compassion, and integrity, seeking to serve those around me rather than seeking power or recognition. This mindset is rooted in Scripture, where Jesus teaches that true leadership comes from serving others. In Mark 10:45, it says, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” This verse serves as a constant reminder that leadership is about putting others first, a principle that has deeply influenced my role as a campus leader and volunteer at CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ).
One of the most significant experiences that shaped my leadership was during a retreat organized by CRU, where I had the opportunity to lead a small group of students in Bible study and prayer. Initially, I was nervous and uncertain about my ability to lead effectively, but I relied on my faith and prayer to guide me. I remembered the words of Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This verse became a source of strength, and I trusted that God would provide the wisdom and courage I needed.
As I led the group, I focused on creating an environment where each person felt valued and heard. I encouraged open discussion, shared my own experiences, and listened to their perspectives. It wasn’t about having all the answers but about fostering an atmosphere of trust and mutual support. Through this experience, I saw how leadership, grounded in faith, can bring people together and inspire personal growth. I was able to guide others in their spiritual journeys, and in turn, their feedback and insights helped me grow in my faith and leadership skills.
This experience was transformative, not only because I led others but because I learned that leadership is about more than just giving direction. It’s about empowering others, nurturing their growth, and helping them realize their potential. As a campus leader at CRU, I try to apply this principle daily. I lead by example, demonstrating humility, kindness, and a willingness to serve. I aim to create an environment where people feel supported and encouraged to explore their faith and share it with others.
The impact of this experience shaped my vision for the future. I believe that true leadership, inspired by faith, is about serving others and creating a community where everyone can thrive. As I continue to pursue my education and career goals, I want to carry this leadership style with me. Whether in my future business endeavors or in any leadership role I take on, I hope to lead by serving others, listening to their needs, and using my faith as a compass to guide my actions.
In conclusion, my faith has profoundly influenced my leadership style by teaching me the importance of serving others, listening to their voices, and leading with humility. Through my experiences at CRU, and at my local church, I’ve learned that true leadership is about empowering others and creating spaces for growth. As I move forward, I am committed to embodying these values, using my faith as a foundation for every leadership opportunity I encounter.
Abran Arreola-Hernandez Latino Scholarship
One of the most significant experiences in my life occurred when I moved from Brazil to Orlando just over a year ago. This transition was not just a change of scenery, but a complete redefinition of who I am, my values, and how I interact with the world. The move was filled with challenges, but it has also been an incredible opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery.
Growing up in Brazil, I was surrounded by the strong presence of family and community. We celebrated life's moments together, whether they were big or small. My parents taught me the importance of hard work, humility, and service. However, when I moved to the United States, I encountered a new set of cultural norms, and suddenly, I was alone in a vast new world. I had to navigate language barriers, different educational systems, and a completely unfamiliar environment. These obstacles tested me in ways I had never imagined, but they also taught me important lessons that I carry with me to this day.
One of the first things I realized was how much I relied on my faith and family to stay grounded. In moments of isolation or fear, I would pray for guidance and strength, trusting that God had a purpose for my journey. This deepened my relationship with God and made me realize that no matter where I am in the world, I am never truly alone. Psalm 23:4 resonates deeply with me: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." This verse has been a constant reminder that my faith is a source of strength, no matter the challenges I face.
In the process of adapting to life in Orlando, I learned how to be more self-sufficient. I had to navigate life without the constant support I had back home, and this taught me resilience. I began to understand that the world is not always kind, and sometimes, the only thing you can rely on is your inner strength and the support of those around you. This experience has made me more empathetic, especially toward immigrants and those who face similar challenges in a foreign land.
As I continued my journey in this new country, I found solace and community in the people I met through CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ), a faith-based organization I joined to connect with others who shared my values. Through CRU, I realized how important it is to build a community of like-minded individuals who uplift and support each other. This has helped me to not only grow spiritually but also to understand the importance of reaching out and supporting others.
This experience has reshaped my understanding of myself and my role in the world. I now see myself not just as an individual trying to make it in a new country, but as someone who has been called to serve, to lead with empathy, and to make a difference in the lives of others. I have become more aware of the challenges that immigrants and underrepresented groups face, and I am motivated to use my education and leadership to advocate for them.
In conclusion, moving to Orlando has been a pivotal experience that has taught me resilience, deepened my faith, and strengthened my commitment to serving others. It has shaped how I view the world, emphasizing the importance of community, empathy, and perseverance. I am determined to use the lessons learned from this experience to contribute positively to my community, knowing that the challenges I have faced have made me stronger and more compassionate.

Purposeful, Responsible, and Productive: Embodying Community Leadership
Being a purposeful, responsible, and productive member of the community means living intentionally, fulfilling obligations, and positively contributing to the lives of those around us. It is about leading by example, consistently striving to improve our surroundings, and embracing opportunities to serve others. As a leader at CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ), a volunteer at my church, and someone passionate about making a difference, I believe these qualities are essential to my growth and future impact.
Purpose comes from living with clarity and a focus on what truly matters. For me, purpose is found in service and helping others, using my gifts to uplift the community. Through my role at CRU, I have learned that purpose is not just about having a vision, but about taking action. CRU has allowed me to serve my peers, lead Bible studies, and facilitate events that encourage spiritual growth. Every time I engage with others in these settings, I am reminded that true purpose lies in helping others grow closer to God. As 1 Peter 4:10 states, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
Being responsible means being dependable and accountable, not only for my actions but also for the impact I have on others. Responsibility involves showing up, following through, and being someone others can trust. My volunteer work at CRU’s headquarters has taught me how important consistency is. Whether preparing for an event, organizing outreach programs, or supporting fellow members, I commit to doing my part and ensuring success. Responsibility is the foundation of leadership—it’s about being reliable, whether times are easy or tough. Proverbs 12:1 reflects this, “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”
Productivity is about making the most of my time and resources to create positive change. It’s about staying focused, being disciplined, and ensuring that my actions align with my values. I embrace productivity in my service at church, where I help with different programs, lead youth groups, and assist with community events. These experiences have shown me that productivity isn’t about being busy—it’s about intentionally using my time to help others. Colossians 3:23 encourages us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Looking ahead, I plan to embody these qualities as I continue my personal and professional growth. Whether leading a business or contributing to a nonprofit, I want to be a purposeful, responsible, and productive member of the community. I hope to use my education to help others find their purpose, support vulnerable populations, and offer hope to those in need.
Ultimately, the most powerful way to embody these qualities is by leading with love and compassion. By staying rooted in my faith and serving with a heart for others, I believe I can make a lasting, positive impact on my community.
Concrete Rose Scholarship Award
As an international student, the path to higher education is both an exciting and challenging journey. Coming to the United States from Brazil, I am determined to create a better future for myself and the people I aspire to serve. However, being an international student comes with a significant financial burden. The cost of tuition is substantially higher than for domestic students, and without financial assistance, I fear that I won’t be able to finish my education. This scholarship is not just a financial aid; it is a lifeline that will allow me to continue pursuing my dreams and fulfilling my purpose in life.
Growing up in Brazil, I witnessed firsthand the struggles of people who are marginalized and forgotten by society. I have seen people suffering from poverty, homelessness, and a lack of opportunity, and I’ve always felt a deep urge to help. My faith has been a guiding force in my life, and it’s through this lens that I see the value of every person. I believe that no one should be left behind, and everyone deserves a second chance. My dream is to combine my business education with my passion for serving others by creating an organization or business that provides opportunities for people who are homeless to not only find stability but also draw closer to God.
The vision I have is simple: to create a space where individuals who have fallen on hard times can find support, guidance, and a fresh start. I want to establish a business or nonprofit that helps people in homeless situations find not only material support but also spiritual healing. I believe that when people are shown the love of God, they can find the strength to rebuild their lives, no matter how many times they have fallen. My mission is to provide a safe, welcoming environment where individuals are given the resources, the opportunity, and the hope they need to transform their lives.
This scholarship will make all the difference in my ability to turn this vision into reality. Without it, I would struggle to continue my studies and would risk losing the opportunity to complete my degree. A business education is vital to my success because it will equip me with the skills necessary to manage and lead a successful organization that can create real change in the lives of others. The knowledge I gain from my studies will give me the tools to build a sustainable business model that can not only help people in need but also create jobs, foster community, and make a lasting impact.
Moreover, this scholarship would allow me to focus more on my studies without the overwhelming stress of financial constraints. I want to be able to fully dedicate myself to my education, participate in leadership opportunities, and gain experience that will prepare me to lead with integrity and compassion. By easing my financial burdens, this scholarship will help me stay on track and bring me one step closer to my goal of starting a business that serves the most vulnerable members of society.
I believe that with the right support and opportunities, every person can be given a second chance, just as I’ve been given the chance to pursue my dreams in this new country. With your help, I will be able to continue my education and, eventually, make a meaningful difference in the lives of people who need it most.
Pro-Life Advocates Scholarship
My pro-life position is deeply rooted in my faith and personal experiences, particularly the story of my close friend, Natalia. Her mother had initially planned to abort her but never went through with it because when she arrived at the clinic, she realized she had forgotten her wallet. She never returned, and this seemingly small moment became the reason Natalia is here today. Her miraculous survival changed my life, showing me that every soul has a purpose, and every life is a gift from God.
Natalia’s story not only demonstrated the power of life but also brought me closer to God. Her survival helped me realize that life is not ours to take but God’s to give and take. As it is written in 1 Samuel 2:6: “The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.” Through Natalia, I understood that God’s plan is always good and that every life, regardless of its circumstances, holds immeasurable value. Her story deepened my faith and helped me see the beauty in life’s imperfections.
I believe the sanctity of life is a core teaching of my faith. Every moment, from conception to natural death, is part of God’s divine plan. This belief has driven me to advocate for the dignity of all human beings, especially the unborn. I actively evangelize through my local church and am an active member of CRU, a Christian campus organization. Through CRU, I have shared my faith and spread the pro-life message, emphasizing the importance of protecting life.
In addition to my involvement in CRU, I also share biblical reflections online, particularly on Instagram. I use this platform to discuss ethics, abortion, and political issues related to life and justice. I aim to inspire others to reflect on the sacredness of life and encourage them to take a stand for the unborn. Whether through posts or conversations in my community, I strive to amplify the voice of the voiceless, ensuring that those who cannot speak for themselves are heard.
Furthermore, I participate in pro-life activities such as prayer vigils and supporting pregnancy resource centers. I’ve joined local marches and protests to stand against abortion. These actions reinforce my commitment to defending life, ensuring that every unborn child is given the chance to fulfill their God-given potential. I know that even small actions, whether in prayer or demonstration, can spark change and shift hearts.
The story of Natalia shaped my pro-life position in ways that words can hardly express. It taught me that life is sacred, and every child, born or unborn, has a purpose. We are all called to defend those who cannot defend themselves. Her life, a beautiful miracle of grace, is a reminder that each life is a precious gift to be cherished, loved, and protected. Through this journey, I have grown closer to God and developed an unshakable commitment to the pro-life cause. It is my mission to stand for the dignity of all human beings, especially the unborn, and to help others understand the sanctity of life through the lens of faith and love.
Jose Prado Memorial Scholarship
Moving to Orlando from Brazil last year marked a turning point in my life—a leap of faith grounded in my Latin heritage, my family’s resilience, and unwavering trust in God’s purpose. This move wasn’t just about changing locations; it was about redefining who I am and aligning my life with the values my family and faith instilled in me.
Growing up in Brazil, my family was my anchor. Our home radiated warmth, laughter, and shared meals that celebrated our Latin roots. My parents worked tirelessly to create opportunities for us, modeling humility, hard work, and a deep commitment to serving others. Faith was the cornerstone of our lives, we prayed together, attended church every Sunday, and leaned on God’s promises during struggles. These moments taught me that trials are not barriers but opportunities to grow and trust in God’s plan.
When I moved to the United States, I carried these lessons and my faith with me. Adapting to a new culture, language, and education system was overwhelming, yet my faith became my refuge. I leaned on the values my parents instilled, finding comfort in knowing God was guiding me. This transition deepened my empathy for others facing similar challenges and strengthened my commitment to serving those in need.
My Latin heritage shapes my worldview, one that values community, perseverance, and the interconnectedness of our stories. This perspective fuels my passion for service. As a business student, I aspire to use my education to empower marginalized communities, particularly immigrants and Latin Americans. Business, to me, is not just about profits; it’s a platform to address disparities, create opportunities, and uplift lives. My dream is to design programs that foster sustainable growth and offer hope to those who feel forgotten.
Faith is also at the heart of my leadership. As a Christian, I have led through CRU, or Campus Crusade for Christ, a faith-based campus organization dedicated to spiritual growth and community. Leading Bible studies and outreach initiatives with CRU has shown me the power of faith in action, how it inspires hope, heals brokenness, and affirms worth. These experiences taught me that leadership is about humility and service.
Volunteer work has further shaped my identity. From organizing food drives to mentoring younger students, these acts of service reflect the values my family and faith instilled in me. Each connection reinforces my belief in our collective responsibility to uplift one another. Small acts of kindness, grounded in love and faith, have the power to create lasting change.
My journey from Brazil to Orlando is a testament to the resilience that faith and culture provide. It has been one of rediscovery, embracing my Latin roots, drawing strength from my faith, and transforming challenges into growth. My heritage and faith are not just parts of my identity; they are the foundation of my purpose.
Receiving this scholarship would be more than financial support; it would affirm the values that guide me. It would allow me to continue my education and expand my capacity to serve others. With this opportunity, I am committed to honoring the resilience and spirit of my family, my faith, and my Latin roots, ensuring they resonate in every life I touch.

Divine Timing and Human Surrender in Ecclesiastes 3:1–2
> “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
> a time to be born, and a time to die;
> a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.”
> —Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 (ESV)
Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 reveals the profound truth that life is not governed by human will, but by divine timing. The passage challenges us to surrender our desire for control and instead embrace the wisdom of living in rhythm with God’s ordained seasons.
From the beginning, Ecclesiastes is a book filled with tension. Traditionally attributed to Solomon, it is rich in paradox and philosophical reflection, often wrestling with the apparent futility of life. In the midst of its realism and sobering honesty, Ecclesiastes 3 emerges as one of the most hopeful and stabilizing chapters. The poetic rhythm of its lines is deceptively simple, but the message it carries is both timeless and spiritually transformative. The opening verses of this chapter, especially verses 1 and 2, call the reader to reflect on time not as something to master, but something to accept as divinely orchestrated.
“For everything there is a season” is not merely a statement about the weather or agricultural cycles. It is a sweeping claim about the entirety of human existence. The writer is asserting that every joy, sorrow, success, and struggle has its appointed time. The structure of the verses, pairing birth with death, planting with harvesting, underscores the balanced, cyclical nature of life. These aren’t opposites to be feared or avoided, but necessary complements in a world created with order and meaning.
This passage does not suggest that we are passive victims of fate. Rather, it invites us to acknowledge that we are not the ones who define the times; God does. The phrase “under heaven” is critical to understanding the spiritual dimension of the text. It points to divine sovereignty, the idea that every season is held in God's hands, not random, not accidental, but purposeful. In a modern context where control is often idolized, where calendars, productivity, and goals dominate our thinking, this passage interrupts us. It reminds us that peace and purpose are found not in managing every outcome, but in trusting God's greater plan.
Furthermore, the text points us toward a life of discernment. In Ecclesiastes, the issue is not whether we will experience life’s many seasons, but how we will respond to them. There is a time to be born and a time to die, both are inevitable. There is a time to plant and a time to uproot, both are necessary. The wisdom lies not in resisting one or rushing into the other, but in understanding what season we are in. It is possible to plant when we should be harvesting, or to cling when we should be releasing. This passage urges us to seek alignment with God's timing, not simply our own preferences.
In a theological sense, Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 also calls us to a posture of humility. If God appoints the times and seasons, then we are not the center of the story, He is. This stands in contrast to the self-focused worldview so common today, which often teaches that we are the authors of our own destinies. Scripture, however, paints a different picture: we are stewards of a life that ultimately belongs to God. Surrendering to His timing is not weakness; it is wisdom.
On a personal level, this passage has been deeply meaningful to me as a Christian, student, and immigrant navigating unfamiliar seasons. When I left Brazil to pursue my studies in Florida, I experienced uncertainty, disconnection, and moments of discouragement. Yet looking back, I can see that each phase was part of a larger season God was shaping in my life. There was a time to leave behind the familiar, a time to grow in faith, and a time to step into leadership roles like serving in Cru, a Christian campus ministry. At every step, I had to let go of control and trust that God’s timing—even when it didn’t match my expectations—was good.
This passage also speaks to the broader cultural moment. In a world facing global instability, personal losses, and a constantly shifting social landscape, the idea that "there is a season for everything" provides a kind of spiritual anchoring. It helps us face death with courage, change with grace, and uncertainty with trust. It does not eliminate grief, confusion, or pain, but it places them in a greater context: one in which God is sovereign, and nothing is wasted.
Ultimately, Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 reminds us that time is sacred. Not because we control it, but because God inhabits it. Each season has value. Even seasons of waiting, silence, or loss are not void of meaning. They are invitations to trust, to listen, and to prepare for what comes next. The goal is not to manipulate the seasons, but to live faithfully within them, planting when it is time to plant, and harvesting when it is time to reap.
In conclusion, Ecclesiastes 3:1–2 is not just a poetic observation about time. It is a theological declaration that life, in all its complexity, unfolds under the watchful care of a sovereign God. The wisdom the writer offers is not how to escape life’s difficulties, but how to live in tune with divine timing. To recognize the sacredness of each moment and to surrender our plans for something greater, this is the essence of spiritual maturity. And in doing so, we find not just peace, but purpose.

From Brazil to Florida: A Journey of Faith, Identity, and Purpose
My name is Isabela Quintão, and I am a Brazilian student currently pursuing a degree in business in Florida. While I am not of Nigerian or African descent, my journey as an international student has been shaped by deep cultural roots, personal transformation, and a growing sense of purpose. My story is one of returning to faith, rediscovering who I am, and learning how to use my gifts to serve others and honor God.
I was raised in a Baptist home in Brazil, where religion was part of our weekly routine. I knew the teachings of Christianity and attended church regularly, but it wasn’t until I started college that I realized how little of it had taken root in my heart. In my first year, I drifted away from my faith. Life felt overwhelming, and I began to distance myself from the values I had grown up with. It wasn’t until I felt completely disconnected that I understood just how much I needed God. That moment of emptiness became a turning point, my faith stopped being inherited and became personal.
When I moved to the U.S. to continue my studies, I carried with me this renewed commitment to live for Christ. But adjusting to life as a foreign student was not easy. Language barriers, cultural differences, and the emotional weight of being far from family made the transition difficult. Everything felt unfamiliar, and it was tempting to shrink back into isolation. But through the support of a local church, a new spiritual community, and Cru (a Christian student ministry), I found not only friendship, but a sense of belonging. Today, I serve in leadership at Cru as Treasurer and also guide Bible studies, helping others grow in their faith just as others helped me.
Living in the U.S. has taught me so much, about myself, about Brazil, and about the nature of identity. I’ve come to appreciate my Brazilian heritage in a new way. Our culture is vibrant, warm, and centered around community. Being in the U.S. made me realize how deeply these values are part of who I am. At the same time, I’ve learned to admire the structure, innovation, and opportunities present here. I’ve learned to embrace the challenge of being different, not as a limitation, but as a unique advantage. My experiences in both cultures have made me more resilient, adaptable, and open-minded.
Perhaps the most valuable thing I’ve learned is that I don’t need to choose between cultures, I can bring the best of both into my future. My journey has impacted not only who I am, but where I’m going. I’ve discovered a deep passion for service, especially toward vulnerable populations like the homeless. After volunteering in community outreach, I felt a calling to combine business with ministry. I now envision launching a business or nonprofit that provides job training, financial education, and spiritual mentorship to underserved communities.
My experience as an immigrant has shown me that challenges often carry hidden blessings. It has strengthened my faith, shaped my character, and clarified my purpose. I’ve learned that true success is not about titles or income, but about using what you’ve been given to serve others. I may be far from home, but I believe I am exactly where I’m meant to be, walking in faith, learning through experience, and preparing to build something that reflects both my background and my calling.

Serving with Purpose: Leadership Through Community and Compassion
One of the most meaningful volunteering experiences I’ve had was serving with a ministry that supports homeless individuals in my community. This outreach event included preparing and distributing meals, offering clothing and hygiene kits, and sitting down to talk and pray with people facing incredibly difficult circumstances. What impacted me the most wasn’t just the act of giving, but the deep, personal connection that developed when I simply listened and treated each person with dignity and respect. That experience didn’t just change my perspective—it changed the direction of my life.
Volunteering with the homeless was more than a one-time event for me. It awakened a sense of calling to help restore hope to those who feel forgotten by society. I realized that real change comes not just through charity, but through creating sustainable solutions. It inspired me to pursue a career in business with the goal of launching an organization that serves the homeless through job training, transitional employment, and spiritual mentorship. In this way, my volunteer experience was the beginning of something much bigger: a lifelong mission to serve.
In addition to this outreach, I serve as a student leader in Cru, a Christian organization on campus. As Treasurer and a Bible study leader, I help manage resources and guide others in their faith. Through Cru, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about authority, it’s about responsibility. Leadership through service means being willing to step into the background, listen before speaking, and lift others up even when it requires sacrifice. Whether I’m mentoring a younger student, organizing a group prayer, or supporting an outreach event, my role as a leader is to serve first.
Giving back to my community has become part of who I am. It’s not just about the moments of service, but the mindset behind them, approaching every opportunity with humility and a desire to make others feel seen and valued. My volunteering experience taught me that small acts of kindness can spark big changes. A simple conversation, a warm meal, or a sincere prayer can begin the process of healing. It showed me that people are not defined by their situations, and that when we lead with love, we create space for transformation.
Leadership through service is especially important today, when so many people feel isolated, ignored, or broken. True leadership isn’t about being in front, it’s about walking beside others. It’s about using whatever gifts you’ve been given to help meet the needs of others, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. The best leaders I’ve known are those who have served the most, and I strive every day to follow that example.
Through volunteering and leadership, I’ve found both purpose and direction. I plan to continue serving through my career, my ministry, and my daily life. Because when leadership starts with compassion, and service is grounded in faith, real and lasting change is possible.

Working to Restore Dignity Through Faith, Business, and Service
One of the most pressing social issues I feel called to address is the cycle of homelessness and economic vulnerability, especially among individuals who have been overlooked or written off by society. This issue is close to my heart not only because of what I’ve learned in my studies as a business student, but because of what I’ve seen and experienced through hands-on service.
Volunteering with homeless communities opened my eyes to the complex challenges that go far beyond lack of shelter. I saw people struggling with mental health, addiction, unemployment, broken relationships, and spiritual emptiness. Many of them had incredible talents and potential but were stuck in a cycle of survival with no support system. That experience stirred something in me. It helped me see that true impact requires more than charity, it requires opportunity, mentorship, and long-term investment in people’s lives.
In response, I’ve committed myself to a vision of public service through faith-driven entrepreneurship and financial empowerment. I am currently pursuing a business degree and building a foundation of skills that will help me lead initiatives and organizations designed to serve those in need. My long-term goal is to create a business or nonprofit that provides job training, transitional employment, and holistic support, including mentorship, financial literacy, and spiritual guidance. I want to create a place where people can work, grow, and heal, knowing they are seen and valued.
In the meantime, I am actively preparing for that future. I serve in leadership at Cru, a Christian campus ministry, where I’m not only the Treasurer but also lead Bible studies and mentor younger students. This role has allowed me to develop practical leadership skills while also helping others grow in their faith. It’s teaching me how to lead with compassion, purpose, and integrity, qualities that I believe are essential for addressing social issues effectively.
Additionally, I’ve started an Instagram profile dedicated to Bible study and encouragement, with the hope of reaching people who may feel spiritually lost or disconnected. Often, issues like homelessness are tied to deeper struggles of identity, brokenness, and hopelessness. I believe that restoring people’s spiritual and emotional well-being is just as important as meeting their physical needs. My goal is to share messages of hope and remind people of their God-given worth.
The issue of homelessness is big, and the root causes are many. But I believe lasting change comes from combining business strategy with a servant’s heart. I may not have all the resources or answers yet, but I am building the knowledge, the experience, and the faith to create something that can truly make a difference. I’m committed to walking alongside people who are hurting, not just to give temporary aid, but to help them build a new future.
This is how I am working step by step, prayer by prayer, action by action—to address a social issue that matters deeply to me.

Called to Serve: Faith, Business, and a Heart for Community
My inspiration to pursue a life of public service stems from a place deeper than career ambition, it comes from faith, experience, and a growing understanding of what it truly means to lead with purpose. I believe that public service is not limited to government roles or nonprofit jobs; it is a mindset and a mission to put others before oneself. As someone studying business with a strong Christian foundation, I am passionate about using my education to serve my community through entrepreneurship, financial empowerment, and compassion.
Growing up in Brazil in a Baptist family, I was taught the importance of helping others. However, it wasn’t until I went to college that my faith became real and personal. I had a period of disconnection from religion, which left me feeling spiritually lost. But in that season, God called me back and gave me a deeper understanding of what it means to follow Him. Since then, I’ve rededicated my life to Christ and have been actively involved in my church and in Cru, a Christian student ministry where I currently serve in leadership as the Treasurer and a Bible study leader.
My passion for public service was ignited through firsthand experiences with people in need. Volunteering with homeless communities changed my perspective on what it means to serve. These were not just people in need of food or shelter, they were people in need of hope, dignity, and connection. That experience stirred something inside me. It made me realize that I wanted to dedicate my life not only to building a career, but to building solutions that help restore people’s lives.
I believe the skills I gain through my business education will be powerful tools for public service. I plan to apply my knowledge in finance, marketing, and leadership to develop sustainable programs that support low-income and marginalized individuals. My long-term goal is to create a business or nonprofit organization that provides job training, transitional employment, and spiritual mentorship to people who are struggling, especially the homeless population.
I also want to address financial illiteracy, a silent issue that keeps many individuals and families trapped in cycles of poverty. I hope to develop workshops and outreach programs in my local community to teach financial planning, budgeting, and entrepreneurship skills. By helping people take control of their finances and see their God-given potential, I believe we can break chains of hopelessness and replace them with vision and opportunity.
My vision is holistic. I don’t just want to help people survive; I want to help them thrive. I want my work to reflect God’s love and point people to a greater purpose. Whether through faith-based business practices, mentorship programs, or community initiatives, I am committed to using what I learn to uplift others.
Public service, to me, means being the hands and feet of Christ in practical ways, showing up, building, and giving without expecting anything in return. It means being a leader who serves first, who listens before acting, and who sees every individual as valuable and worthy of investment.
In the years to come, I see myself not just as a business leader, but as a community builder and servant. With the skills I gain through my education and the passion God has placed in my heart, I am determined to make a difference, starting right where I am.

Applying "Real Insights" to Faith-Driven Business and Leadership
In Chapter Two of Real Insights by John Graff, the author highlights the importance of building a strong professional foundation by combining core values with practical strategy. Although the book is primarily written for aspiring real estate agents, the lessons in this chapter are remarkably relevant to my own aspirations in the business world, especially as someone pursuing faith-driven entrepreneurship.
Graff emphasizes that success starts with internal alignment, clarifying your values, identifying your “why,” and establishing trust with clients. These principles resonate deeply with my vision of becoming a business leader who keeps God at the center of every decision. Like Graff’s encouragement for agents to build meaningful relationships, I believe that lasting business impact begins with integrity and a heart for service. Whether I’m managing finances, leading a team, or launching a social enterprise, I want my work to reflect honesty, compassion, and excellence.
One of the most applicable ideas from this chapter is Graff’s focus on authenticity and continuous learning. He reminds readers that the best professionals are those who are constantly growing, adapting, and staying grounded in their purpose. In my current role as a student leader and Treasurer of Cru, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to lead with humility and to stay teachable. This applies not just to faith, but also to business. The more I grow in skill and character, the more equipped I’ll be to serve my future team, clients, and community well.
Perhaps most inspiring is Graff’s message that your work should not only provide a livelihood but also create value for others. That idea aligns perfectly with my goal of building a business that helps restore dignity to underserved populations, such as the homeless. With sustainability, finance, and faith in mind, I plan to build something that lifts people up spiritually, economically, and environmentally.
In the next five years, I hope to apply Graff’s insights to my entrepreneurial journey by leading with purpose, growing with discipline, and serving with love. Real Insights reminds me that success is not just about transactions, but transformation, and I want my work to be a reflection of both.

Creating a Positive Environmental Impact Through Purpose-Driven Business and Finance
As a business student with a deep passion for faith-driven leadership, I believe that the most powerful way I can make a positive environmental impact in the next five years is through sustainable finance and socially responsible entrepreneurship. By combining my business education with a heart for service, I plan to build and support businesses that not only generate economic value, but also promote environmental stewardship and community well-being.
In the short term, I aim to gain experience in financial management with a focus on ethical investing and sustainability initiatives. As Treasurer of Cru, a Christian campus organization, I’ve already learned how to manage resources with integrity and purpose. This role has taught me the importance of aligning financial decisions with values, a principle I will carry into my career. I plan to intern with or work for organizations that prioritize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, supporting projects that reduce waste, lower carbon footprints, and invest in clean technologies.
Beyond corporate finance, I am also passionate about entrepreneurship. My long-term vision is to launch a business that addresses both social and environmental challenges. Inspired by my volunteer work with the homeless and underserved, I envision creating a company that offers job training, transitional employment, and housing support to vulnerable populations. The key difference is that this business would operate under a sustainable model, using eco-friendly materials, reducing energy use, and incorporating green practices such as upcycling or local sourcing to minimize environmental impact. The goal is to create a cycle where people are empowered, the environment is respected, and faith-based values drive every decision.
On a global scale, I want to be an advocate for financial literacy in underdeveloped communities, helping individuals and families understand how to make long-term, sustainable financial decisions that align with both their economic needs and their environmental surroundings. From promoting clean cooking technologies in low-income areas to teaching micro-entrepreneurs how to build sustainable supply chains, the intersection of finance and environmental awareness is incredibly powerful. I plan to partner with or even create a nonprofit that offers faith-rooted financial education focused on sustainability and long-term impact.
Additionally, I have started building a faith-based Instagram profile, where I share reflections on Scripture. In the future, I intend to expand this platform to promote values like creation care and responsible stewardship of God’s resources. Often, conversations about the environment leave out spiritual motivations. I believe that reminding people of our biblical responsibility to care for the earth can help shift hearts and actions, locally and globally.
In all of this, my approach is rooted in the belief that true impact comes from intentional, values-based action. Whether it’s launching an eco-conscious business, managing sustainable investments, or mentoring others in ethical decision-making, I want to use finance as a force for good. With God at the center, I’m confident that I can help drive meaningful change, not just for profit, but for people and the planet.
In the next five years, my mission is to create systems and solutions that reflect respect for creation, compassion for others, and a commitment to excellence in business. Through finance, faith, and innovation, I will work to build a world that is not only more sustainable, but more hopeful.
Pastor Thomas Rorie Jr. Christian Values Scholarship
Finding My Way Back: A Journey of Faith and Purpose
I was born and raised in a Baptist home in Brazil, surrounded by a culture of faith. From a young age, I was taught about God, attended church, prayed before meals, and understood the basic teachings of Christianity. But while I knew about God, I didn’t really know Him. My relationship with Christianity was more habitual than heartfelt, something I associated with family tradition and moral values, rather than an active, living faith. It was only when I entered college that I began to understand just how much I needed a personal connection with Jesus and how transformative that connection could be.
When I started college in Brazil, I entered a completely new phase of life. The academic pressure was intense, and the social environment was very different from the faith community I had grown up in. For the first time, I had full freedom over my time, my values, and my choices. Without even realizing it, I slowly drifted away from church and from God. I wasn’t hostile to faith, I just didn’t prioritize it. Life became busy, and my spiritual life faded into the background. But as I moved further from God, I began to feel an emptiness that I couldn’t explain. I had friends, goals, and success in school, but something was missing.
It was in that spiritual dryness that God gently began to pull me back. A friend invited me to a church service, and though I hesitated, I went. That night, the message was about the difference between religion and relationship. The pastor talked about a God who doesn't just want our Sunday mornings, but our whole hearts, our dreams, struggles, and deepest fears. That message shook me. For the first time, I understood that being a Christian wasn’t about checking boxes or following rules. It was about knowing Jesus, being known by Him, and living in daily relationship with Him. That realization was the beginning of my return, not just to church, but to faith.
Since that moment, I’ve been on a journey of deepening faith. When I moved to Florida to continue my studies in Business, I was determined not to lose that connection again. In fact, I wanted to build my life around it. I found a local Baptist church, joined a weekly Bible study, and began surrounding myself with people who would encourage me spiritually and help me stay grounded. I also joined Cru, a Christian student movement dedicated to discipleship and evangelism. Being part of Cru has been one of the most impactful parts of my spiritual journey.
At Cru, I’ve had the opportunity not only to grow in my faith but also to step into leadership. I currently serve as the Treasurer, managing resources, supporting outreach events, and helping ensure that our ministry is effective and sustainable. More than that, I’ve also taken on a discipleship role, leading Bible studies, mentoring younger students, and helping others grow in their walk with Christ. It’s an incredible responsibility, but also an incredible joy. Every week, I get to see lives being transformed by the gospel, the same gospel that brought me back when I was lost.
Another key moment in my journey came through community service. A few semesters ago, I had the opportunity to volunteer with a ministry that served the homeless. At first, I saw it as a way to give back, a way to do something good. But it became something much deeper. Sitting across from someone who hadn’t eaten in days or praying with a man who had lost everything and still had faith changed me. What struck me the most wasn’t the poverty or the pain. It was the humanity, the dignity, and the hope still burning in so many of their hearts.
That experience lit a fire in me. It made me realize that my calling wasn’t just to study business or even to become successful. I was being called to serve. To use every gift, every skill, and every opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people who the world often overlooks. I saw how powerful it is to meet people in their need, not only with resources, but with compassion, respect, and the message of God’s love. Since then, I’ve been praying and dreaming about how to make that vision a reality.
That’s where my career goals and faith come together. I’m pursuing a degree in business because I believe that business, when done with purpose and integrity, can be a powerful tool for transformation. My dream is to become a manager, or perhaps launch my own business or nonprofit organization. But I don’t want to build something just for profit. I want to build something that changes lives. Something that provides opportunities to the overlooked, especially the homeless community. A place that offers not only jobs and training, but mentorship, community, and hope. A place where the gospel is lived out through action, where people are seen, valued, and empowered.
At the center of all of this is God. My vision isn’t just social or professional, it’s spiritual. I want to create a business where Christ is at the core, where every decision reflects His love and truth. I want to lead with compassion, build with integrity, and use my platform to bring people closer to Him. Whether that means hiring people who’ve been through hard times, offering Bible studies in the workplace, or simply running a business in a way that honors God, I want everything I do to reflect His heart.
To support this vision, I’ve also launched a Bible-focused Instagram account. My goal is to share Scripture in a way that’s clear, relevant, and encouraging, especially for young adults who may feel disconnected from their faith, just like I once did. Through this platform, I’ve begun connecting with people from all over the world, offering devotionals, verse breakdowns, and personal reflections. It’s still small, but it’s growing, and I believe God is using it.
Receiving this scholarship would be an incredible blessing. As an international student, the financial challenges of studying abroad are significant. This scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my studies, my leadership in Cru, and the development of my ministry work both online and in the community. It would give me the margin and support I need to grow academically, spiritually, and professionally. Most importantly, it would be an investment in the mission God has given me: to serve others, to share the gospel, and to build something that lasts.
I don’t claim to have all the answers. I don’t know exactly where God will lead me in the next five or ten years. But I do know this: I am here with a purpose. Every challenge I’ve faced, every door that’s opened, and every step of my journey has been a part of God’s plan. He brought me from passive religion to living faith, from drifting to leading, and from serving to dreaming bigger than I ever imagined. With His guidance, and with support from opportunities like this scholarship, I’m ready to keep walking in that calling with faith, with courage, and with love.

Defining Success and the Path to Achieving It
Success, for me, is not defined solely by financial wealth or professional recognition. It is about impact, purpose, and the ability to create meaningful change. True success is measured by growth, service, and the legacy I leave behind—not just for myself, but for the people and communities I can uplift along the way. My vision of success is centered on building a career that bridges global markets, supports economic empowerment, and fosters mentorship for first-generation students and aspiring entrepreneurs. This opportunity will provide me with the resources, knowledge, and connections necessary to turn my goals into reality.
My long-term vision is to establish a business consulting firm that helps companies expand internationally, particularly between Brazil and the United States. Beyond business growth, I want to incorporate social responsibility into my work by creating initiatives that provide career training, mentorship, and financial literacy programs to individuals from underserved backgrounds. Success, to me, means ensuring that my achievements create opportunities for others, breaking cycles of financial instability and educational barriers that many, including myself, have faced.
To achieve this, I have taken deliberate steps toward personal and professional growth. I am currently pursuing a business degree while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, ensuring that I acquire the skills necessary to thrive in the industry. I have worked to expand my knowledge in global business, finance, and leadership strategies to prepare myself for the challenges of entrepreneurship. Additionally, my involvement with Cru has allowed me to mentor and guide students, reinforcing my belief in the power of mentorship as a tool for empowerment. Through academic excellence, leadership development, and service, I am continuously working to develop the skills and mindset required to create meaningful change in my community and beyond.
While I have remained committed to my goals, financial barriers continue to be a challenge. Education is a powerful tool, but access to it is not always equal. This scholarship would remove financial stress, allowing me to focus entirely on academics, leadership development, and career-building opportunities such as internships, networking events, and entrepreneurial training programs. With this support, I would be better positioned to graduate without financial constraints, ensuring that I can continue my path toward success without compromising on valuable experiences that will shape my future.
Beyond personal benefit, I am committed to paying it forward. I believe that education and mentorship should not be privileges limited to a few but accessible to all who are willing to work hard and pursue their dreams. I plan to mentor first-generation students, provide career guidance, and create business opportunities that uplift communities. Additionally, I want to integrate corporate social responsibility into my future consulting firm by establishing initiatives that invest in entrepreneurship programs for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. By receiving this opportunity, I will be empowered to create a lasting impact, ensuring that my success contributes to building a more equitable and inclusive future for others.
True success is not measured by what we achieve for ourselves, but by what we do for others. I am committed to using my education and career not only to reach my own goals but to help others achieve theirs as well. By embracing leadership, mentorship, and ethical business practices, I will ensure that my success benefits more than just me—it will serve as a foundation for others to succeed as well.

The Power of Dedication and the Pursuit of Excellence
One of the people I admire most is my mother. Her unwavering dedication to education and professional growth has profoundly shaped my outlook on success and perseverance. After completing her undergraduate degree, she dedicated an additional eight years to further study, mastering her field despite the challenges of balancing work and personal life. Her journey has taught me that education is not just about acquiring knowledge—it is about discipline, resilience, and the pursuit of excellence.
Growing up, I watched my mother navigate difficult circumstances with determination and an unshakable work ethic. She never viewed challenges as barriers but rather as stepping stones to something greater. Her ability to remain focused despite setbacks has been one of my greatest inspirations. Seeing her sacrifices firsthand made me realize the importance of taking my own education seriously. As a first-generation immigrant, I understand that education is not just a personal achievement but a powerful tool for creating opportunities, not only for myself but also for those I can impact in the future.
My mother’s influence has also shaped my motivation to develop strong communication skills, which led me to participate in speech and debate and mock trial. I quickly realized that success in the professional world is not just about technical knowledge—it is about the ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively. Participating in speech and debate has challenged me to think critically, construct logical arguments, and present my thoughts with confidence. Similarly, mock trial has given me practical experience in structured reasoning, quick thinking, and public speaking—skills that are crucial in business and leadership.
Beyond personal growth, my participation in these activities is driven by a desire to advocate for ideas that matter. Whether debating social issues or presenting legal arguments, I have learned the power of storytelling and persuasion in shaping perspectives and inspiring action. These experiences have prepared me to be a stronger leader, equipping me with the ability to defend my ideas, negotiate effectively, and communicate across different audiences.
The lessons I have learned from my mother’s dedication to education and my involvement in speech and debate will continue to guide me as I pursue my academic and professional goals. I am committed to using my education not only to advance my career but to foster meaningful change by empowering others. Whether through business leadership, mentorship, or community advocacy, I will carry forward the values of perseverance, strategic thinking, and the power of communication to build a future of impact and success.

Using My Skills to Build a More Empathetic and Understanding Global Community
Empathy and understanding are the foundations of a connected and thriving global community. In a world where cultural, economic, and ideological divides often create barriers, I believe that business, leadership, and mentorship can be powerful tools for fostering unity. As a first-generation immigrant, a business student, and a mentor, I have developed a deep appreciation for diverse perspectives and the importance of creating opportunities that bring people together. Through my skills in strategic leadership, cross-cultural communication, and mentorship, I plan to contribute to building a world that is not only economically prosperous but also more compassionate and inclusive.
One of my greatest strengths is bridging cultural gaps. Moving from Brazil to the United States forced me to adapt quickly to a new environment, learning how to navigate language barriers, cultural differences, and new systems. This experience has given me the ability to understand different perspectives, adapt to diverse environments, and communicate effectively across cultures. These skills will be essential in my future career as I work to connect global businesses and individuals, ensuring that cross-border collaboration is rooted in mutual respect and understanding.
I also believe that business can be a force for good when driven by ethical leadership. My goal is to establish a business consulting firm that not only helps companies expand internationally but also prioritizes corporate social responsibility. By working with organizations that value diversity, fair trade, and economic inclusion, I will use my expertise to promote business practices that uplift communities, create jobs, and foster understanding between different cultures. A truly successful business is not just one that generates profit, but one that makes a lasting, positive impact.
Another way I plan to build a more empathetic world is through mentorship and education. Throughout my journey, I have benefited from guidance and support, and I want to provide the same for others—especially first-generation students, immigrants, and aspiring entrepreneurs. My involvement with Cru has allowed me to mentor others, offering them the encouragement and resources needed to overcome challenges. I plan to expand my mentorship efforts by creating programs that help individuals from diverse backgrounds gain access to education, career development, and leadership training.
Additionally, I am committed to promoting emotional intelligence and ethical leadership in professional environments. As someone who has managed a team of 40 employees, I have firsthand experience in creating workplace cultures that prioritize respect, inclusivity, and collaboration. Many of the world’s conflicts—whether in politics, business, or communities—stem from miscommunication and a lack of understanding. By fostering open dialogue, conflict resolution strategies, and inclusive decision-making processes, I will ensure that workplaces and organizations become spaces of mutual respect and shared growth.
To truly build a more empathetic and understanding world, we must create opportunities for people to connect, learn from one another, and work toward common goals. Through my career in business, my commitment to mentorship, and my dedication to ethical leadership, I will work to create environments that bring people together rather than divide them. The future of our world depends not just on economic success, but on human connection and shared purpose. I am committed to using my skills and experiences to make that future a reality.

Change is not just about personal growth; it is about stepping into a larger purpose and making an impact. My decision to move to the United States to study business was driven by a desire to expand my opportunities, challenge myself, and build a future where I can create meaningful change. I believe that success is not measured solely by individual achievements but by the ability to uplift others, and I am committed to using my education and experiences to make a difference in the lives of those around me.
The journey has not been easy. Leaving Brazil meant stepping into an unfamiliar environment, learning to navigate a new culture, and overcoming the challenges that come with being a first-generation immigrant. However, every challenge has reinforced my determination. I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, pursued leadership and mentorship opportunities through Cru, and engaged in professional development to gain the skills necessary to achieve my long-term goals. Each step I have taken has brought me closer to my vision of building a business that not only connects global markets but also creates opportunities for others.
This scholarship will be a crucial part of my journey. Financial constraints can be a significant barrier to success, and receiving this scholarship will allow me to focus on my studies and professional development without the added stress of financial limitations. More importantly, it will serve as a reminder that hard work, perseverance, and faith can open doors. With this support, I will be able to take advantage of internships, networking events, and leadership programs that will shape me into a stronger, more capable professional.
However, I do not believe in simply receiving help—I believe in paying it forward. Just as I have been fortunate to receive guidance and support, I plan to do the same for others. I will use my education and business expertise to mentor students, especially first-generation immigrants who face the same challenges I have encountered. Through mentorship programs, career coaching, and community involvement, I will ensure that others have the resources and encouragement they need to pursue their own dreams.
Beyond mentorship, I want to create a lasting impact by establishing a business that prioritizes social responsibility. Whether through hiring practices that support underprivileged communities or launching initiatives that provide training and education for aspiring entrepreneurs, I will integrate giving back into the core of my career. My goal is not only to succeed personally but to create opportunities that empower others to do the same.
This scholarship is not just a financial contribution; it is an investment in my ability to create change. With this support, I will continue working toward my goals, knowing that my success will extend beyond myself. I am committed to using my knowledge, experience, and resources to help others rise, ensuring that the impact of this opportunity is multiplied in the lives of those who come after me.
Future Leaders Scholarship
Leadership is about responsibility, vision, and the ability to inspire others. One of the most defining moments in my leadership journey occurred when I was responsible for managing a team of 40 employees. The challenge was not just overseeing operations but instilling accountability and teamwork in individuals who often lacked motivation and a clear understanding of their role’s significance.
One of the biggest obstacles I faced was resistance to change. Many employees had developed a routine that prioritized individual convenience over collective success. Productivity was inconsistent, and communication was minimal. Recognizing that a top-down approach would likely increase resistance, I decided to take a more collaborative approach to leadership.
I began by understanding the root of the problem through one-on-one conversations with employees. I listened to their concerns, frustrations, and personal goals, identifying areas where they felt disengaged or unsupported. I realized that many lacked a sense of purpose and did not feel valued within the organization.
To address this, I implemented a structured system of goal-setting and accountability. I introduced performance benchmarks tied to both individual and team success, but rather than enforcing them as strict rules, I framed them as shared goals that would benefit everyone. I also ensured that employees had access to mentorship, training, and personal growth opportunities, showing them that their contributions mattered beyond daily tasks.
Another critical strategy was leading by example. I committed to working alongside the team, demonstrating the dedication and work ethic I expected. I was available for guidance, actively problem-solved with them, and fostered a culture of open communication and mutual respect. This approach helped employees feel comfortable seeking help, offering suggestions, and taking ownership of their work.
The results were significant. Productivity increased, workplace morale improved, and employees became more engaged. The team transformed from a group of individuals working in isolation into a cohesive unit that valued teamwork. What was once a struggling operation became an efficient, high-performing environment where each member felt empowered.
This experience reinforced my belief that leadership is about service—creating an environment where people feel valued, motivated, and equipped to succeed. The skills I developed—strategic problem-solving, effective communication, and the ability to inspire others—are ones I plan to carry into my future career in business.
As I work toward establishing an international business consulting firm, I will apply these leadership principles to build workplaces where employees feel invested in the company’s mission. I will focus on developing strong teams driven by shared goals, open communication, and a commitment to excellence. Beyond business success, I will use my leadership skills to mentor young professionals, support first-generation entrepreneurs, and foster inclusive environments that empower individuals to thrive.
Leadership is not about control but about inspiring others to see their potential and guiding them toward success. In my future career, I will continue to develop and apply these principles, ensuring that I lead with integrity, vision, and a dedication to creating lasting impact.
Joe Gilroy "Plan Your Work, Work Your Plan" Scholarship
My goal is to build a career in business that integrates entrepreneurship, strategic management, and leadership development. I want to create and scale businesses that connect global markets, particularly between Brazil and the United States, fostering economic growth while promoting social responsibility. Beyond business success, I am committed to mentorship and community development, using my experiences to support immigrants and first-generation students navigating higher education and professional growth.
In the long term, I plan to establish a business consulting firm that helps Latin American companies expand into the U.S. market and vice versa. This goal requires financial planning, industry experience, and strong professional networks. To ensure a solid foundation, I have developed a structured approach to gain the necessary knowledge and resources.
The first step is education and skill development. Completing my business degree while maintaining my 4.0 GPA is a priority to secure competitive job opportunities. Beyond academics, I plan to gain hands-on experience through internships in global business consulting, finance, or strategic management. I will expand my network by attending industry conferences, business summits, and leadership programs. My role as a volunteer with Cru will continue developing my leadership and mentorship skills, reinforcing my commitment to service.
Between years two and five, I will focus on career advancement and financial stability. Securing a position in a multinational corporation or consulting firm specializing in international business, finance, or entrepreneurship will provide the experience I need. During this period, I will save and invest a portion of my income to build capital for future ventures. Strengthening industry connections will be essential, as strong networks increase long-term success. Additionally, I will pursue certifications in business strategy and market expansion. Key budget considerations for this phase include living expenses, networking and business conference fees, professional development costs, and an investment capital accumulation target of at least $25,000.
Between years five and ten, I will launch a consulting firm focused on assisting Latin American businesses with U.S. market entry. This phase will require developing a strong marketing and client acquisition strategy while leveraging my bilingual skills and cross-cultural experience. Establishing partnerships with investors, business leaders, and organizations will be critical for business growth. I will secure funding through venture capital, small business loans, or self-funding. The estimated budget for this phase includes startup capital of $50,000 to $100,000, marketing costs of $10,000, office space or remote operations expenses of $2,000 to $5,000 per month, and legal fees between $5,000 and $15,000.
Beyond ten years, I aim to expand the business internationally and invest in mentorship programs for young entrepreneurs and first-generation students. I also plan to diversify revenue streams through public speaking, business ventures, and leadership initiatives. Giving back to the community will remain a core part of my mission, with social responsibility initiatives and mentorship programs requiring an estimated annual budget of $20,000. Expansion costs vary, with an estimated reinvestment of $100,000.
I recognize that flexibility is essential in business. If necessary, I may pursue an MBA to expand my network and credentials. Another alternative is partnering with an established firm rather than launching independently, leveraging existing infrastructure. If market conditions shift significantly, I will refine my business model while staying committed to my overarching mission.
Success in business is not only measured by financial growth but also by the opportunities it creates for others. By staying disciplined, continuously learning, and leveraging the right resources at the right time, I am confident in my ability to achieve my goals. My work will not only fulfill my professional ambitions but also contribute to economic development, bridging gaps between markets and supporting aspiring entrepreneurs.
Bulkthreads.com's "Let's Build Together" Scholarship
What I want to build is not just a business or a career—it is a movement of hope, dignity, and restoration for those in need. As I pursue my degree in business, I feel a deep calling to create something that extends beyond personal success. My vision is to build an organization dedicated to serving the homeless and underprivileged, providing them with not just resources, but a path to true transformation. At the center of this mission is God, guiding every step, every decision, and every life that is touched through this work.
This organization would go beyond temporary aid; it would focus on long-term restoration and empowerment. Many homeless individuals face more than just financial hardship—they suffer from lack of support, job opportunities, mental health struggles, and a feeling of being forgotten by society. My goal is to build a faith-based center that offers shelter, job training, mentorship, and spiritual guidance. It would be a place where people are not only given a meal but a future, where they can rebuild their lives with the support of a loving community.
To achieve this, I plan to combine my business knowledge with social impact strategies, ensuring the sustainability of the organization. This means securing funding through partnerships with companies, churches, and philanthropic donors. A business model could include small social enterprises—such as a café, a workshop, or a service-oriented business—where those in need could work, gain experience, and earn an income. The profits would go back into funding the program, making it a self-sustaining initiative rather than one solely dependent on donations.
Beyond financial support, the heart of this mission is faith. I believe that true transformation comes not just from material assistance, but from encountering the love and purpose that only God can provide. Through Bible studies, mentorship programs, and counseling, I want to create a space where people can heal emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. No one should feel forgotten, and no one is beyond redemption.
Building this will not be easy, but I know that with perseverance, faith, and the right partnerships, it is possible. This project will not only change lives but also inspire others to serve, creating a ripple effect of kindness and transformation. By putting God at the center, I am not just hoping to provide temporary relief—I want to help people rediscover their worth, restore their faith, and build a future filled with hope and purpose.
Julie Holloway Bryant Memorial Scholarship
My name is Isabela, and I am originally from Brazil. I moved to the United States last year to pursue my Business degree, and my journey as a first-generation immigrant student has been both challenging and rewarding. Throughout my academic career, I have maintained a 4.0 GPA, a reflection of my commitment to excellence and my determination to make the most of this opportunity. Beyond my studies, my faith plays a central role in my life, and I actively serve my community through volunteering with Cru, where I help others grow in their spiritual journeys and navigate life’s challenges.
After graduation, I plan to leverage my education and experiences to build a meaningful career in business. I am particularly interested in leadership, entrepreneurship, and strategic management, as I believe in using business as a tool to create opportunities for others. My long-term vision is to bridge global markets and foster economic growth, bringing together my experiences from both Brazil and the U.S. to develop impactful solutions in the business world. Additionally, I want to continue mentoring and empowering others, ensuring that I give back to the communities that have shaped me.
My first language is Portuguese, but I am also fluent in English. Being bilingual has been both an incredible asset and, at times, a challenge. One of the most significant difficulties I faced when moving to the U.S. was adapting to cultural and linguistic differences. Even though I was proficient in English before moving, expressing myself fluently in academic and professional settings required extra effort and confidence. There were moments when I doubted my ability to communicate as effectively as native speakers, but over time, I learned to embrace my unique perspective rather than see it as a limitation.
Despite these challenges, being bilingual has given me immense advantages. It allows me to connect with diverse groups of people, understand different cultures, and navigate international opportunities with ease. It has also helped me develop resilience, adaptability, and a global mindset, which are invaluable traits in business. More importantly, it allows me to bridge communities and break down language barriers, something I deeply value both professionally and personally.
My journey as an immigrant, student, and leader has shaped the way I see the world, and I am excited to apply everything I have learned as I take my next steps after graduation. Whether in business, mentorship, or community service, I am committed to creating a meaningful impact—one that extends beyond borders and inspires others to pursue excellence in their own lives.

Moving to the United States last year was one of the most defining moments of my life. Leaving behind the familiarity of Brazil—my family, my culture, and the comfort of the known—was a leap of faith in itself. While I was excited about the opportunities ahead, the reality of starting over in a foreign country soon set in. I faced language barriers, cultural differences, and the pressure of excelling in a rigorous academic environment while pursuing my **Business degree**. The weight of expectations, coupled with moments of self-doubt, felt overwhelming. It was in this season of uncertainty that my faith became my greatest source of strength.
There was a particular moment early on in my journey when I questioned whether I had made the right decision. I had always been an excellent student, but the transition to a new educational system brought unexpected challenges. I worried that I would not be able to maintain the **4.0 GPA** I had worked so hard for. The fear of failure loomed over me, and for the first time, I felt truly out of place. The pressure was immense—not just from within, but from the silent responsibility I carried as a **first-generation immigrant**, knowing that my success was not just for me but for those who had sacrificed so much to give me this opportunity.
In those moments of doubt, I turned to my **faith**. I clung to the promise in **Philippians 4:13**: *“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”* I prayed fervently, asking for guidance, peace, and the perseverance to keep moving forward despite my fears. Instead of letting anxiety consume me, I began to trust that God had led me here for a reason and that He would equip me to face whatever lay ahead. My faith reminded me that I was not alone, that every challenge was shaping me for something greater, and that my worth was not defined by my struggles but by the strength I found in overcoming them.
With that renewed perspective, I stopped focusing on the fear of failure and started embracing each challenge as a learning opportunity. I sought help when I needed it, I pushed myself beyond my comfort zone, and I relied on the **community I found through Cru**, where I was reminded of God’s faithfulness through the encouragement of others. Over time, I not only adapted but thrived, maintaining my academic excellence while also deepening my understanding of what it truly means to trust in God.
Looking back, I realize that this season of struggle was necessary. It refined me, strengthened my faith, and deepened my resilience. Through that experience, I learned that faith is not just about believing when things are easy—it is about **trusting when everything feels uncertain**. My journey as an immigrant, a student, and a believer has been shaped by this truth, and it continues to guide me in every challenge I face.

Excellence is not a singular achievement but a way of life, a continuous pursuit of self-improvement, integrity, and service. It is not merely about excelling in academics or career but about embodying values that uplift both oneself and the community. In my everyday life, I strive to cultivate a spirit of excellence through diligence in my studies, unwavering faith, and a commitment to serving others. By holding myself to high standards and giving back to those around me, I aim to create a meaningful impact that extends beyond personal success.
Academically, I have always believed that knowledge is both a privilege and a responsibility. Maintaining a 4.0 GPA as a Business student is not simply about attaining high marks; it is about embracing the discipline and perseverance required to truly understand and apply what I learn. Excellence in education means going beyond the minimum expectations, engaging critically with coursework, and seeking opportunities for real-world application. Moving from Brazil to the United States last year presented an additional challenge as I navigated cultural differences, adapted to a new academic system, and pushed myself to excel in an unfamiliar environment. However, instead of seeing these obstacles as limitations, I viewed them as opportunities for growth. Every challenge I have faced has strengthened my resilience and deepened my commitment to learning, reinforcing my belief that true excellence is forged in moments of adversity.
Beyond academics, my faith plays a fundamental role in shaping my commitment to excellence. As a Christian, I believe that my work, my actions, and my ambitions should reflect my values and serve a greater purpose. This belief fuels my dedication to volunteering with Cru, a faith-based organization focused on mentorship, outreach, and community support. Through my involvement, I have had the opportunity to guide and encourage others, offering not only faith-based support but also practical assistance to those in need. My commitment to service is not an obligation; it is a calling—a response to the grace I have received and a desire to extend that same kindness to others. Excellence, in this sense, is not just about personal success but about using my skills and resources to uplift those around me.
Leadership is another avenue through which I embody a spirit of excellence. Managing forty employees has reinforced the importance of accountability, communication, and responsibility. True leadership is not about exerting authority but about fostering an environment where individuals feel valued and motivated to perform at their best. I strive to lead with integrity, ensuring that those I work with understand the importance of diligence and purpose in their roles. In doing so, I aim to inspire a culture of excellence that extends beyond my own actions and into the lives of those around me.
Ultimately, the pursuit of excellence is not about seeking perfection but about consistently striving to be better, to learn more, and to serve with a full heart. Whether through academics, faith, leadership, or service, I aim to leave a lasting impact by setting an example of diligence, resilience, and compassion. Excellence is not a destination; it is a mindset, a daily commitment to becoming the best version of oneself and using that growth to make the world a better place.
Breaking Barriers Scholarship for Women
When I stepped off the plane last year, leaving behind the familiarity of Brazil, I carried more than just my suitcase—I carried my faith, my ambition, and an unwavering belief that God had a purpose for this journey. Moving to the U.S. to study business was not just about earning a degree; it was about stepping beyond the expectations set before me and forging a path that had no blueprint.
Society often dictates what success should look like, especially for someone like me—a young woman, an immigrant, a Christian, and a student navigating an entirely new world. But I grew up with an example of resilience: my mother, who spent eight years studying after college to reach where she is today. Watching her relentless dedication taught me that success isn’t handed to us; it is earned, fought for, and built with unwavering persistence.
That mindset became my anchor when I arrived in a country where everything—from language to culture to the way people conduct business—felt unfamiliar. I had to prove myself in classrooms where I was the outsider, in conversations where my accent revealed my roots before my words could. Yet, instead of seeing these as barriers, I saw them as opportunities. I embraced the challenge of learning, of speaking up even when I doubted myself, of turning discomfort into growth.
My faith has been the foundation of this journey. In moments of uncertainty, I found strength in knowing that I was not alone, that every challenge was shaping me into the person I was meant to become. My commitment to excellence is not just about personal success—I maintain a 4.0 GPA not because it defines me, but because I see my work as an offering, a way to glorify God through diligence and perseverance.
Beyond academics, I have sought ways to serve, to give back to the community that has welcomed me. Volunteering with Cru has given me the opportunity to walk alongside others in faith, to share hope, and to remind myself that leadership is not just about achievement—it’s about lifting others up.
But my journey as a trailblazer isn’t just about personal growth. It’s about rewriting the narrative of what it means to be an immigrant student in business. I refuse to be limited by statistics or stereotypes. Instead, I channel my experiences into shaping a future where I can bridge cultural gaps, bring new perspectives to the corporate world, and empower others who, like me, are walking an unconventional path.
I’ve learned that courage isn’t just about taking risks—it’s about believing in your ability to thrive despite the odds. My experience has given me a unique perspective: the power of resilience, the value of hard work, and the deep-rooted understanding that no dream is too big when you’re willing to fight for it.
My future is being built on these foundations, and I know that, just like my mother, my success will not be defined by how long it takes but by the impact I create along the way. Through faith, perseverance, and service, I am not just chasing dreams—I am building a legacy.

The Perfect Ending for "The Bear"
In my perfect ending for "The Bear," every character finds a sense of closure and purpose that reflects the turbulent journey they've endured together. At the heart of it, Carmy finally achieves a delicate balance between the intense demands of his passion for cooking and the personal relationships he’s long neglected. He learns that success isn’t measured solely by the perfection of a dish but by the warmth of the community built around it. In a heartfelt finale, Carmy reconnects with his estranged family and forges a deeper bond with his team, acknowledging that their collective strength is what truly elevates the restaurant.
Richie, who has long struggled with his own sense of worth and identity, finally finds a path forward that honors his loyalty and creativity. Instead of being a mere sidekick, he emerges as a co-creator and innovator, bringing his own unique flavor to the restaurant’s evolving menu. His journey from self-doubt to self-acceptance mirrors the transformation of the restaurant itself—from a chaotic battleground to a harmonious space that celebrates both tradition and change.
The supporting staff, the unsung heroes of the kitchen, also experience their own moments of redemption and growth. The sous chefs and line cooks, once mired in constant stress and burnout, find relief in an environment where their skills are appreciated and nurtured. They begin to take ownership of their roles, contributing ideas that not only improve the restaurant’s operations but also foster a genuine sense of camaraderie and mutual respect.
Outside the kitchen, the restaurant becomes a local landmark—a gathering place where food, art, and community intertwine. The once-struggling establishment transforms into a thriving hub that hosts community events and culinary workshops, drawing inspiration from the diverse backgrounds of its team and customers alike. This evolution symbolizes the healing power of shared experiences and the beauty of embracing change.
In the final scenes, as the team enjoys a quiet moment together after a busy service, there’s an unspoken understanding that their journey, though fraught with hardship, has led them to a place of fulfillment. They aren’t perfect, and their struggles haven’t disappeared, but they have learned to lean on each other. For Carmy, Richie, and the entire crew, success is no longer about chasing an unattainable ideal—it’s about finding balance, embracing imperfections, and building a future where everyone matters. This is the perfect ending for me—a celebration of growth, resilience, and the transformative power of unity.
A Security Insurance Agency Scholarship
Winner**Addressing the Insurance Crisis in Disaster-Prone States**
In recent years, states like Florida, California, and Texas have witnessed a troubling exodus of insurance companies—a direct consequence of increasingly frequent natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and fires. This withdrawal has led to a sharp rise in homeowners’ insurance premiums, making coverage unaffordable for many, particularly retirees and single parents. To address this insurance crisis effectively, a multifaceted approach is necessary—one that supports policyholders and insurers alike while empowering insurance agencies to facilitate sustainable solutions.
A promising solution is the creation of state-backed insurance pools or reinsurance programs. In areas with high disaster risks, the potential for significant losses discourages private insurers from offering affordable coverage. By establishing public-private partnerships, states can share the financial burden of catastrophic events with private insurers, thereby stabilizing premiums. For example, a state-backed reinsurance fund could absorb a portion of the losses incurred during extreme events, reducing the risk for private companies and making it more attractive for them to remain in these markets. This approach not only ensures that homeowners have access to essential coverage but also maintains a competitive insurance market.
In tandem with financial interventions, investment in disaster risk reduction is essential. States need to bolster their infrastructure, enforce stricter building codes, and promote sustainable environmental practices to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. These initiatives can reduce both the frequency and severity of claims, ultimately lowering insurance premiums over time. Insurance agencies can collaborate with state and local governments to provide expert risk assessments and educate homeowners on proactive measures to protect their properties. This cooperative effort not only diminishes overall risk but also cultivates a culture of preparedness among residents.
Regulatory reforms also hold significant potential in alleviating the insurance crisis. Policymakers should consider creating incentives for insurers that invest in innovative disaster mitigation technologies. Tax breaks or subsidies could offset some of the increased risks and costs associated with high-disaster areas. Simultaneously, regulators must enforce transparent pricing models and robust consumer protection measures to ensure that policyholders are not taken advantage of during periods of market volatility. Such regulatory strategies would help stabilize the insurance market by balancing the interests of insurers and insured individuals.
Insurance agencies themselves are pivotal in this process. Acting as intermediaries between insurers, regulators, and consumers, these agencies can drive the adoption of modern risk assessment tools and data analytics. By tailoring insurance products to reflect actual risk levels more accurately, they can help lower premiums for properties that implement effective safety measures. Furthermore, insurance agencies can play a vital role in community outreach—educating homeowners on disaster preparedness and risk mitigation, thereby reducing the overall exposure to natural disasters.
In conclusion, addressing the insurance crisis in disaster-prone states demands a comprehensive strategy that integrates state-backed financial mechanisms, robust disaster risk reduction efforts, thoughtful regulatory reforms, and proactive engagement from insurance agencies. By sharing risk, reducing disaster impacts, and promoting innovation, we can build a more balanced and sustainable insurance market—one that provides affordable coverage for homeowners while ensuring the viability of insurance companies in the face of nature’s unpredictability.
Yolanda and Sam Shuster Scholarship
My mother's journey is a powerful testament to determination and resilience—a legacy that has profoundly shaped who I am today. After completing her college degree, she set her sights on a career in property registration by preparing for the notoriously rigorous public competitive exams required to secure a position at a local Property Registry Office in Curvelo. These exams demand an in-depth understanding of law and public administration, as well as years of relentless, self-directed study. Despite holding a stable job and managing the responsibilities of raising a child, she dedicated eight years to studying at home, driven by a vision for a better future. Her unwavering commitment and willingness to sacrifice personal comfort taught me that true success comes from perseverance and an unyielding pursuit of excellence.
Her tireless efforts have deeply influenced my own journey, especially as I navigated the challenges of moving to the United States in search of greater opportunities. I faced many obstacles—plans derailed by unforeseen setbacks, and the constant struggle to adapt to a new culture and academic environment. In those moments of uncertainty, I drew strength from my mother's example. Her determination reminded me that obstacles are not endpoints but rather opportunities for growth, and that hard work, even when the odds seem insurmountable, can lead to success.
Her story fuels my own commitment to excellence in every aspect of my life. I strive to overcome challenges with the same relentless spirit, whether in my academic pursuits, my volunteer work, or my ambition to build a meaningful career in international business. My mother’s journey instilled in me the belief that perseverance transforms adversity into achievement, and that with determination and a clear vision, every setback can be overcome. Her legacy continues to inspire me every day, empowering me to push forward and make a lasting impact on the world.
