Bio

My name is Isabel Miazga and I’m currently in cosmetology school. I’ve always loved creativity and expression, and beauty has given me a way to grow my confidence and help others feel the same. I wasn’t always into the “girly” side of things, but cosmetology opened me up to a new side of myself and showed me how powerful it is to make someone feel good in their own skin. My goal is to build a career in this industry, keep learning new techniques, and one day have my own business where I can share my passion and skills with others.

If an AI were trained to understand the Filipino-American experience, I’d want it to know that it’s way more than the food we eat, the language we speak, or the holidays we celebrate. Being Filipino-American isn’t just about lumpia, karaoke, or Tagalog words sprinkled into sentences — it’s about family, resilience, and figuring out how to navigate two worlds at once. My story comes from growing up in a Filipino household while also living in America, learning how to honor my family while still carving my own path. It’s about balancing cultural expectations with personal dreams, and understanding that humor, care, and connection aren’t just habits — they’re survival tools, ways of showing love, and ways of holding our community together. I’d also want it to know my values, because they come straight from my upbringing. Loyalty, generosity, and a desire to help others were never taught in a textbook — they were modeled by my parents, cousins, and the people around me. Seeing them support each other despite struggles and sacrifices made me realize that being Filipino-American isn’t just a cultural label, it’s a mindset of service, responsibility, and connection. At the same time, I’ve learned that it’s okay to find my own identity within that framework, and that part of being Filipino-American is building a life that reflects both where you come from and who you are. But there are parts of this experience no AI, no matter how advanced, could ever fully capture. The way it feels to sit around a crowded table with family, some speaking Tagalog, some English, all laughing, arguing, and sharing stories at the same time — that energy is lived, not encoded. The quiet moments, like carrying responsibilities without saying them out loud, feeling proud but also guilty for pursuing personal goals, or noticing how small gestures can mean everything — those are deeply human experiences. They’re messy, emotional, and specific to each person’s journey. Those moments are what make my story mine, and why I value my culture so much. Filipino-American identity isn’t just a checklist of traditions or language; it’s a lived experience of love, struggle, resilience, and growth. If an AI could understand that, it would understand why my story matters — and why some parts of it can only ever be felt, not programmed.

What excites me about the cosmetology industry is how much it’s shaped me as a person. I wasn’t always into the “girly” stuff growing up. I never pictured myself as someone who’d be into makeup, hair, or nails the way I am now. But when I started experimenting and actually letting myself play with different looks, I realized it wasn’t about being girly at all, it was about expression. Cosmetology gave me a way to bring out parts of myself I didn’t even know were there. It let me find confidence and creativity, and honestly, that’s what makes me excited about being in this industry — I get to turn that same feeling around and give it to other people. I’ve also had my struggles in beauty and with the idea of fitting into the industry. At times I felt like I didn’t belong or that I wasn’t “perfect” enough to really make it. There’s this image that people put on beauty professionals, like you have to look or act a certain way, and I didn’t always feel like I fit that mold. But what I learned is that cosmetology isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being real. It’s about your vibe, your creativity, and the way you make people feel. That clicked for me, and now I know I don’t have to change who I am. Instead, I can bring my own energy into this career, and that makes me even more excited to keep growing in it. What also excites me is that cosmetology is never boring. Trends change constantly, new techniques come out, and styles always keep evolving. I love that, because I don’t like being stuck in one place or doing the same exact thing every day. In this industry, I’ll always have something new to learn or something different to try, and that’s motivating to me. It keeps me sharp and keeps me from ever feeling stuck. It’s also fun because you can make it your own — one stylist might focus on coloring, another might love extensions, another might focus on nails — there’s so many directions to go, and that flexibility is exciting. On top of all that, I think about the future and how many opportunities cosmetology can give me. I could work in salons, I could travel, I could even start my own business one day. That excites me because it’s not just a job, it’s a career I can actually build on. And while I’m working on those goals, I’ll still be connecting with people every day, learning new things, and making people feel good about themselves. At the end of the day, cosmetology excites me because it’s more than just beauty. It’s about confidence, connection, and creativity. It helped me grow into myself, and now I want to use it to inspire other people and make them feel that same spark. That’s what makes me love this industry and why I know I’m in the right place.
